welcome
The city of Ottumwa has a population of approximately 25,000
and is the county seat of Wapello County which is also home to
the towns of Agency, Blakesburg, Chillicothe, Eddyville, Eldon
and Kirkville. Ottumwa made its start as a river town in 1851
and has since evolved into a hub for entertainment, recreation,
arts and culture and retail development in southeast Iowa.
Ottumwa offers diverse dining, shopping, historic attractions,
trails, performing arts venues, outdoor recreation and affordable accommodations. Also, Wapello County is home to the
famed American Gothic House which served as the inspiration
and backdrop for Grant Wood’s most famous painting,
“American Gothic.”
It is our goal at the Ottumwa Area Convention & Visitors
Bureau to provide visitors with all the information needed to
explore and enjoy our community. No matter how long your
stay, we are here to make your visit a great experience!

FREEDOM ROCK
102 Church Street
Ottumwa
641.684.4303
www.FreedomRock.com
In 1999, the original Freedom Rock
was created by a young Iowa artist,
Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II, after seeing
the film Saving Private Ryan. It wasn’t
long before Sorensen decided to spread
The Freedom Rock message to all 99
Iowa counties and hence was born
“The Freedom Rock Tour.” Although
these rocks may be smaller than the
original, the message is equally powerful. Sorensen arrived in Ottumwa on
September 22, 2014 to create a patriotic rock mural unique to Wapello
County. The Ottumwa Arts Council
raised funds for the project and suggested several ideas such as a Gold
Star Banner, American flag, bald eagle,
Tuskegee Airmen, National Guard
Unit 833rd and Naval Air Station
Ottumwa. The quality of Sorensen’s
work speaks for itself.

(rusticated stone) was used for the

it about 450 tons of bricks which alleviated a great deal of structural stress.
