Dear fellow LaGuardians, Welcome to the beginning of another school year, one full of promise and excitement as we work together to achieve our potential as both artists and scholars. You are given a tremendous opportunity to develop the highest, most truthful expression of yourself and to make this world a kinder, more beautiful place. I challenge you to use this opportunity to hone your crafts. Strive to be the person you want to be; challenge yourself to achieve your goals; and embrace your potential, for this year -- and your entire career at LaGuardia Arts. I urge you to make friends, be kind to those you meet, and have face-to-face conversations with those whom you disagree. We have an honor system here at LaGuardia. We expect you to do the right thing. We want your parents and guardians to be proud of you and your accomplishments. We want you to optimize your humanity and use your talent to build new bridges to ways of thinking and knowing. I wish you all the best, and I am inspired by the things we can achieve as a community. Each student received with a copy of their schedule a Program Change Request Form and should follow this program until they receive a new copy. There are 4 situations in which a program change will be approved: 1. You are scheduled for a class that you have already passed. 2. You are missing one of the academic courses you need to graduate. 3. You are missing a required studio class. 4. There is a gap in your program on five consecutive days. Students are scheduled into the classes they need to graduate; there are very few openings in classes which would allow for students to make a schedule change. fare privileges on public transit facilities if they reside 1 1/2 miles or more from school; students are eligible for half-fare surface transportation if they reside more than 1/2 mile from their school. The MetroCard is valid for one semester on the days when Program change requests for change of teacher, change or dropping of lunch period, or change of session (earlier or later schedule) will not be honored. If you would like to discuss your program with your counselor, you may meet with her during a lunch period in the second floor guidance suite on the following date: school is in session. Do not discard your fall MetroCard until you receive your spring MetroCard. The card is good for 3 trips per school day. Lost or stolen cards must be deactivated, and we are unable to issue a new MetroCard at the time the card is reported lost or stolen. For MetroCard information, please go to Rm 230 before 1:00 PM. Google Apps for Education (GAFE) is a suite of applications designed to facilitate communication and integration on school and classroom projects. Both x2VOL and GAFE use the same log-in information (Seniors will continue to use their current Naviance Log-In information.) x2Vol can be found on the Naviance home page in the top left section. You must activate your x2Vol account before signing up or inputting your volunteer hours. • • If you have a current Naviance account, log in and go to the x2Vol section. Complete the sign in process. Weekly Bulletin | Week of September 7, 2015 09 | In the News GRP Summary Sheet for Teachers and Students 7KH*HQHUDO5HVSRQVH3URWRFRO*53KDVEHHQGHVLJQHGLQFROODERUDWLRQZLWKWKH³LORYH8JX\V´)RXQGDWLRQWRSURYLGH all schools with the direction they will take when an emergency incident occurs. At its core is the use of common language to identify the initial measures all school communities will take until first responders arrive. In every incident, school administrators will need to assess the unique circumstances that will affect how the GRP is implemented. Each protocol has specific staff and student actions that are unique to each response. In the event that a student or staff member identifies the initial threat, calling 911 and administration is required. School Safety and General Response Protocols La! Is providing you with information about the Department of Education’s Emergency Readiness Initiatives that are in place in all NYC Public Schools. Every school currently has procedures for emergencies. In 2000, New York State Education Law Section 2801 was enacted requiring schools to develop safety plans regarding emergency response. In July of 2001, the law was amended to require that plans include information for evacuation and sheltering. In accordance with this, “schools need to conduct drills and other exercises to test components of the emergency response plan.” School staff members are trained in various procedures that are outlined in the School Safety Plan and we currently conduct a variety of drills throughout the year to prepare our staff and students. Schools are required to provide and maintain automated external defibrillator (AED) equipment, and drills are conducted during the year to assess the use of AED units in an emergency. In accordance with Section 3623 of the State Education Law, drills are also conducted at schools that focus on safety on a school bus. In addition to conducting these types of drills, our school has a Building Response Team that is trained to activate and respond to different incidents that may occur at our school. Under the new General Response Protocol (GRP), every school will be conducting specific drills designed to help prepare all school communities for three different types of response to emergencies that may occur: evacuation, shelter-in, and lockdown. Opportunities for parent engagement are available at our school to ensure that families are involved in our schoolbased emergency readiness program. Parent versions of the School Safety Plan are available upon request in the main office, and information explaining the GRP is included with this letter. Emergency readiness training in schools takes place in September and continues for staff and students throughout the school year. Student training is grade appropriate and designed to ensure that students understand the importance of these drills without causing unnecessary alarm. Please review the General Response Protocols that have been given to all students, and discuss these procedures with your child. All families are reminded to update the Emergency Contact Cards that are on file in our main office. This includes providing and updating information indicating phone numbers, and the names of adults to whom the school may release children in an emergency. Families are also encouraged to register with Notify NYC (https://a858-nycnotify. nyc.gov/notifynyc/) to receive information about emergency Lockdown (Soft/Hard) ± Soft Lockdown implies that there is no identified imminent danger to the sweep teams. Administrative teams, Building Response Teams, and School Safety Agents will mobilize to the designated command post for further direction. Hard Lockdown implies that imminent danger is known and NO ONE will engage in any building sweep activity. All individuals, including School Safety Agents will take appropriate lockdown action and await the arrival of first responders. ³Attention: We are now in Soft/Hard Lockdown.
