the story
A ballet in two acts, the plot of which is based on the fairy tale, The Nutcracker
and the Mouse King was written by E.T.A. Hoffmann in 1816.
The first American production of The Nutcracker ballet was staged in 1944
by the San Francisco Ballet. Ten years later, the great choreographer George
Balanchine introduced his famous production of The Nutcracker at New York
City Ballet, a staging largely responsible for the ballet becoming part of the
Christmas tradition in the United States.
Act I
Herr Stahlbaum, his wife Frau Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz,
have invited guests to their home for a Christmas Eve party. One of the guests
is Drosselmeyer, an old friend of the family who is also Fritz and Clara’s uncle.
Scene I
The guests are happily dancing when Drosselmeyer arrives. He brings gifts for
the children, including magical dolls. He presents Clara with a Nutcracker and
amuses the children with magic tricks.
Scene II
Night has arrived, and the guests have departed. Clara puts her Nutcracker
in its sleigh under the Christmas tree, and she goes to bed. Later, she comes
downstairs to visit the Nutcracker and falls asleep by the sleigh. At midnight,
Drosselmeyer’s magic begins, and Clara’s dream starts. An army of Mice and
Rats, led by their King, enter the room, creating chaos and spreading fear. The
Nutcracker summons the armies of Toy Soldiers, and the battle begins. Clara
distracts the Rat King by throwing her shoe. The Nutcracker kills the Rat King,
breaks the spell, and is transformed back into a handsome Prince. The Prince
invites Clara to accompany him to the Land of Sweets.
Scene III
Clara and the Prince begin their magical journey in the sailing sleigh, passing
through the enchanted snow forest with beautiful dancing Snowflakes.
Act II
Clara and the Prince arrive in the enchanted Land of Sweets, where the Sugar
Plum Fairy reigns. They are greeted by performers from all over the world who
dance for Clara: Chocolate from Spain, Coffee from Arabia, Tea from China,
Candy Canes from Russia, Marzipan from Belgium, and a sleighful of Bon
Bons from France. The Dew Drop and beautiful Flowers dance for her. Lastly,
the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier dance the Grand Pas de Deux in Clara’s
honor.

Paul Mejia’s career as a choreographer and artistic director
has culminated in the founding of Mejia Ballet International,
dedicated to preserving the excellence of classical ballet,
and as a vehicle to pass on knowledge and training to a new
generation of aspiring professional dancers.
Artistic Director and Choreographer
Paul Mejia is a former New York City Ballet dancer who
danced the principal roles in many of George Balanchine’s
ballets. He began choreographing at the early age of 14 under
the encouragement and tutelage of George Balanchine. After
a tenure throughout Europe, where he choreographed his
first world premieres, he was invited to Guatemala, where
he premiered his acclaimed Romeo and Juliet. Mejia joined
Chicago City Ballet in 1980, as co-artistic director with Maria Tallchief. During
the following seven years, he created 15 new ballets, including his
full-length version of Cinderella, which toured internationally to great acclaim.
His ballet, Eight by Adler, set to music by the late Richard Adler, was broadcast
by PBS, winning an Emmy Award for its principal performer, Suzanne Farrell.
In 1984, Esquire Magazine named him one of its “Outstanding Americans
Under 40.”
Dedicated to the artistic vision and philosophy of choreographer George
Balanchine, Paul Mejia choreographed The Nutcracker in 1988 when he was
the artistic director of the Fort Worth Dallas Ballet, now named Texas Ballet
Theater.
Mejia’s work has been acclaimed throughout the world and is currently being
staged in some of the most renowned theaters, such as The Kennedy Center in
Washington, DC, and The New Opera House in Moscow.
Lighting Designer and Director
Tony Tucci is the recipient of the B. Iden Payne Award for
lighting (Gypsy). His works include American Ballet Theatre’s
Configurations (choreographed by Choo San Goh with Mikhail
Baryshnikov), Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre’s Carmina
Burana, the video Baryshnikov: The Dancer and the Dance, and
works by Cynthia Gregory, Fernando Bujones and Suzanne
Farrell.
For the 1996 Summer Olympics, Tucci designed lighting for the Cultural
Olympiad, which showcased six national and international companies.
Internationally, he has designed lighting for many prestigious dance and
ballet companies. He has been designing the lighting for most of Paul Mejia’s
choreography for the last three decades.

Olga Pavlova is hailed as “The new Pavlova” in Dance
Magazine, referring to the famous Russian ballerina, Anna
Pavlova. She was born in Moscow, Russia, graduated from the
famed Bolshoi Ballet Academy and holds a Master in Teaching
and Choreography from Moscow Academy of Professional
Arts. Pavlova won the Gold Medal and the First Prize at the
International Ballet Competition in St. Petersburg. She is
also a founder of Pavlova Dance Works Corporation and an
Official Répétiteur for Mejia Ballet International. Currently
she is an international guest principal dancer, the master teacher at the Dallas
Conservatory and the associate director of Dallas Youth Ballet. Pavlova is
married to Principal Dancer Yevgeni Anfinogenov.
Pavlova has danced with Bolshoi Ballet Grigorovich Company, Imperial Russian
Ballet, Moscow Classical Ballet, and Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company. She
has toured in more than 30 countries with the famous Bolshoi Ballet Theatre
Grigorovich Company and had a privilege to be mentored by the world ballet
legend Maya Plisetskaya and perform in her Celebration Galas in New York
City at the Radio City Music Hall. Pavlova was a principal dancer of many
international ballet galas and festivals around the world, including an event for
Pierre Cardin at L’Espace Pierre Cardin and Palais de Congres in Paris. She was
a guest principal ballerina at the iconic Uliana Lopatkina event, “Anna Pavlova
Gala,” in Europe and Russia.

Marina Goshko has toured extensively throughout the world as
company principal and soloist. Born in Ulan-Ude in the Republic
of Buryatiya, Russia, she graduated from the Buryat State
Choreographic School. She won an award in the International
Competition of Artists of Ballet in the city of Novoskbirsk, Russia,
and won a Diploma of the International Independent Competition in Moscow.
Upon graduation she joined the Buryat Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet.
In 1993 she became a soloist with the Moscow Classical Ballet. She has been
dancing with Paul Mejia for over a decade. She is married to dancer Andrey
Prikhodko, and they have a young daughter, Alexandria.
Yevgeni Anfinogenov was born in Moscow, Russia. He graduated
from the prestigious Perm State Ballet Academy and joined the
Russian Chamber Ballet Theater of Moscow. He was first soloist
with Moscow City Ballet and the Russian National Ballet Theater.
He has performed extensively throughout the world. He is
married to Prima Ballerina Olga Pavlova.
Andrey Prikhodko was born in Polovinny, Sverdlovsk Region,
Russia. He graduated from the Perm State Ballet Academy and
was accepted into the ballet troupe of Grand Moscow Classical
Ballet of Natalia Kasatkina and Vladimir Vasilyov. Prikhodkov
has toured in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, China, the
United States and Canada. He is married to Principal Dancer Marina Goshko.

SA Met Ballet’s mission is to provide high-quality, pre-professional
instruction to local dancers and choreographers in a stimulating and nurturing
environment through the presentation of cost-conscious, family-oriented
productions, aimed at uplifting the San Antonio arts community.
Founded in 1983 by Patricia Delleney, San Antonio Dance Theatre (SADT)
performed independently and collaborated with The Moving Experience,
founded by Susan Connally. Connally became the artistic director of the
combined SADT in 1987. In 1989, SADT became a member of Regional Dance
America (RDA), a national association of regional dance companies. SADT
assumed the name of San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet in 1995.
SA Met Ballet has hosted two RDA/SW Festivals, in 1999 and 2010, bringing
more than 600 dancers, directors, choreographers and master teachers to San
Antonio. In 2012, SA Met Ballet represented San Antonio at the RDA National
Festival in Montreal, Canada. SA Met Ballet remains the only San Antonio
dance company that has attained RDA membership.
SA Met Ballet produces two major performances each season: a full-length
story ballet (repertoire includes Cinderella, Coppelia, Hansel and Gretel and
The Snow Queen) and “Dance Kaleidoscope,” an evening of contemporary and
classical dance. SA Met Ballet’s 2013/14 season, sponsored in part by the City of
San Antonio Department for Culture and Creative Development, celebrated 30
years of presenting educational programs and entertaining concerts for the San
Antonio community.

Biographies
Susan Beil Connally has been the artistic director of SA Met
Ballet since 1987. She graduated from Boston Conservatory of
Music with a BFA in Dance and has choreographed numerous
ballets for SA Met Ballet. Connally is the artistic director
and principal teacher for Connally’s Dance Workshop, Inc.,
founded in 1976.
She has performed in and choreographed more than 40 musicals, as well as
productions for Connally’s Dance Workshop, Inc. for 37 years. She was the
recipient of the prestigious Stream Award for artistic excellence in 2000 and
served as the local ballet mistress for the Royal Ballet’s production of The
Sleeping Beauty in 2007. Connally currently serves as the local ballet mistress
for the ARTS San Antonio collaboration with Mejia Ballet International’s
version of The Nutcracker.
Karin Connally Heiden has served as the associate director
and administrator for SA Met Ballet since 2004. She received
her BFA in Dance from the Boston Conservatory of Music in
1996. Heiden performed with the BCM Hoofers, Mizery &
Co. (Boston), and the Peggy Spina Tap Co. (New York City)
and has worked on the creative team of the Goodman Theatre
(Chicago) and the Carver Community Cultural Center (San
Antonio).
She served as San Antonio’s local ballet mistress for Moscow Ballet’s Nutcracker
(1999) and production assistant for the Royal Ballet’s production of Sleeping
Beauty in 2007. Heiden’s ballet, For Those Left Behind, described by the San
Antonio Express News as “a densely layered, colorful and amazingly touching
ballet” premiered at the RDA/SW Festival in 2008. Heiden’s work, Path to
Enlightenment, was chosen to be performed in Montreal, Canada for the
Regional Dance America National Festival in 2012.
She currently serves as the RDA/SW president, presiding over 22 companies
from five states. As a dance instructor since 1991, Heiden has been a faculty
member of Connally’s Dance Workshop, Inc., SA Met Ballet, North East School
of the Arts at Lee High School and Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center.
