Products Hot Hoyts PRODUCTS John Dudley gets a sneak preview of what Hoyt has to offer in 2010 Carbon Matrix Newton’s first law states: “An object that is moving will not change its velocity until a net force acts upon it.” There’s been plenty of forward movement from Hoyt recently, with the success of the Alpha Max series, Vantage Elite, GMX riser and 990TX limbs, with no other ‘net force’ in sight. The company certainly isn’t slowing down for the foreseeable future – there are lots of exciting new goodies available from Hoyt in 2010. I was beyond words when I laid eyes on Hoyt’s new Carbon Matrix. It is a true masterpiece – the Ferrari of bows! It’s different to any bow I have ever seen or shot. Its looks alone would set it apart from anything else on the shooting line. If you are into style then the Carbon Matrix is the ultimate status symbol. It has a cool, high-tech, ultra lightweight carbon tube riser built with Hoyt’s Advanced Carbon Construction. The patent-pending riser design is the first of its kind and is strategically designed to yield new standards in strength, vibration reduction and shooting ability. Along with the innovative riser the Carbon Matrix also features a brand new XTS ARC limb. This is a new limb for a beyond parallel limb flex, giving the shooter a quieter, reduced vibration shot. Since the XTS ARC limb has such a radical flex it yields Alpha Burner You wanted it and now it’s here – the fastest Hoyt bow ever made! The first thing I want to say is that the Alpha Burner isn’t only fast; it is also tack-drivingly accurate. The guys behind the scenes at Hoyt range from hardcore outdoorsmen to gold medalwinning target archers. They don’t build bows just to sell; they build bows that can shoot. This is a great addition to the Hoyt line up. I know that many speed-freak Hoyt loyalists have been asking for a high-octane speed bow for several years. The Alpha Burner can rip an IBO arrow at over 340fps while still having a brace height that won’t incredibly high energy storage, which gives higher speeds and enhanced dynamic cam alignment. This bow uses the XTR Cam ½ which gives you quick and easy modular adjustment without a bow press. Another feature that sets the bow apart is that it’s the lightest high-end Hoyt bow ever made. It has shooterfriendly specs with 35 35" ATA length; 7.25 7.25" brace height, and a speed rating of 318fps. Since the craftsmanship is so detailed and precise the quantities will be limited, so you will want to act fast on this model. UK dealers: Quicks Archery rip your arm off or jar your teeth out. I have never been a big fan of speed bows that were tough to shoot and tough on the body – this is not that kind of bow. The Alpha Burner has an aggressivelooking new reflex riser design for speed and is fitted with the tournament-proven XT2000 limbs and Spiral X Cam ½ System. The engineers started with top shooters in mind and chose the riser to match. I feel that there is definitely a market for a speed bow like this, not only for the speed freak but (02392 254114) or Wales Archery (01291 420321) Axle length: 35" Brace height: 7.25" Draw weight: 40 – 80# Draw length: 27½ – 31" also for the people using low poundage or having shorter draw lengths. This extra energy out of the box will allow for great tournament speeds for competition or adequate kinetic energy for hunters. Hoyt’s catalogue headline on the Contender Series reads: ‘Better to be shooting one, than shooting against one.’ I would have to agree with that! This is a great addition to a heritage of proven performers. The Contender series is a solid competition bow that has a totally new riser built around the high-performing XT2000 or XT3000 limbs and the Cam ½ plus or Spiral X cam. There is a newer pocket system on this bow which is a perfect combination of the Alpha Max Pro Lock Pocket and the former Triax Dual Locking Pockets. This new system is lighter and more open in design and has an airtight zero tolerance connection that is so critical to accuracy and consistency. The Contender Series, in my opinion, is a totally revamped version of the very popular UltraTec and UltraElite. They tune easily, aim solidly and group better than you can imagine. If you have enjoyed shooting either of the Ultra Series bows from years past then you will get along really well with the Contender or Contender Elite. Speeds are great and vary from 301fps to 315fps depending on the limb and cam combination you choose. They have some very favorable options in axleto-axle lengths and forgiving brace heights with your choice of either a 38" (XT2000) version or a 41" (XT3000) version. Both the Contender and Contender Elite feature the machined aluminum integrated grip. The Elite version has the ever-popular Shoot Thru Riser Technology (STT). In addition to the new technology in riser and pockets you will also have some great new colours to choose from in the orange crush and red fusion shades. The hightech, incredible looks alone of the new Formula System were enough to make me want to shoot more recurve archery. It’s exactly what the name suggests – a system. The Formula RX riser and the new Formula limbs were engineered and designed to work together creating the fastest, smoothest, most accurate Hoyt recurve ever. The new Paralever riser design actually creates a stretched pocket, which braces the limb at a higher pivot point, reducing limb alignment tolerance. This creates rock-solid alignment stability and 0.005” increment adjustment capability using the ultra-reliable Hardlock These super-fast limbs feature a new tip geometry, new cross-carbon laminates and a new flex pattern, all of which provide for enhanced velocity and smoothness. It has been several decades since something this big has happened to recurve archery. Once again, Hoyt has proven why it is a leading force in archery and why the company has produced the dominant recurve bows in the world for nearly 80 years. Overall, the 2010 Hoyt line is the best I have seen in my lifetime and is a bold and confident move after such a stellar year in 2009. UK dealers: Quicks Archery (02392 254114) or Wales Archery (01291 420321) alignment module. With the Paralever Design, the Hoyt Engineers increased the length of the butt-end of the limbs, which created a dynamic flex pattern. The butt-end of traditional recurve limbs are static and do nothing in terms of flex. Hoyt’s new Formula limbs actually have dynamic flex characteristics through the full length of the limb, which creates a much smoother pull through the clicker at all draw lengths. I have a long draw length and I was simply amazed at how smooth this system was to pull and shoot. The new premium Formula limbs are available in the F4 with cross-carbon laminated foam cores, and in the F3 with cross-carbon laminated epoxy-infused wood cores. Maxxis Series The new Maxxis is the premier hunting bow for 2010, but don’t overlook it for competition as well. I knew the only way Hoyt could possibly make a bow better than an Alpha Max would be to make it faster, quieter and easier to shoot. Let me assure you, the Maxxis is all of those things and is simply a must-have upgrade from Hoyt’s best-selling bow of 2009. The new Maxxis is packed with new innovations and is available in both 31" and 35" models. The Maxxis is still ultralightweight, weighting in at only 3.9lb in the 31" model and 4.2lb in the 35" model. This bow sports the brand-new XTS ARC limb that is engineered for the smoothest pulling, most efficient, vibration-free shot you can ask for. Along with the new limb the Maxxis also has a brand-new In Line Roller Cable Guard. This was designed to reduce cable friction, increase speed and improve efficiency. Roller type cable guards have been around for nearly 30 years and until now there has always been a downside to them. Traditional side-by-side rollers create added cable pressures because they are being forced in a direction in which they wouldn’t naturally go. This tends to increase riser torque or handle twisting while coming to full draw. Axle length Brace Draw height weight Draw length Maxxis 31 31" 7" 40 - 80# 23.5" – 30" Maxxis 35 35" 7" 40 - 80# 27" – 31" Hoyt is able to solve these issues by not only designing a better system but also being able to mount it to the superior Tec Lite riser which is more rigid and consistent than any other riser design. The new Hoyt In Line Roller Cable Guard minimises torque while working in unison with the natural positioning of the XTS ARC limb and XTR cam combination to give you higher speeds and lower energy loss. The result is a torque-free bow that tunes easily and down the middle of the bow. The Maxxis 31 fired through my chronograph at a true speed of 324fps, although the factory rated it at 323fps. This is simply unbelievable considering the ease of pull, smoothness of shot and generosity of brace height.
