Sober nations have all at once become desperate gamblers, and risked almost their existence upon the turn of a piece of paper. To trace the history of the most prominent of these delusions is the object of the present pages. Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.” – Charles Mackay, London, 1841 Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds You do the math! • In the calendar year 2008, the U.S. economy is expected to shed over 1,000,000 jobs (BLS). • Actually lost more than 2.5 million; 1.9 million in last four months. • Between December 2008 and June 2009 approximately 1.5 million young adults will graduate with a bachelor’s degree. • Nearly 1.1 million will seek employment. Those in free fall Recruiting & Employment Issues • Are you even needed? – 40% of employers want to work directly with faculty – Short term versus long term: standard ways of operating outmoded – don’t get caught in the moment • Time to closure – 4 to 6 weeks for entire process – 1 week to make a decision • Experienced workers: In play • Workforce succession planning and recruiting – Many companies are simply adrift in their human resource development Short Term Outlook • Strong Fall will fade into a weak Spring • Keeping afloat: any way possible • A sense of hope – A boost from the new man in town (?) • Unintended consequences – Can politicians (who know nothing about the global economy) avoid doing something stupid – speed avoiding a collision • Share the pain – Credit mess is just beginning to unwind Longer Term Outlook • Democratic capitalism (autos) vs. Super-capitalism (Wal Mart): shift will continue – government included • International finance: even murkier than U.S. (see Smick) • Can Americans save? • Can China avoid a bigger bubble collapse? • The Hammer: Health care • The relationship of financials and labor – The one bright spot For students it’s simple: Know your skills.
