NID KURUKSHETRA. DESIGNING THE FUTURE.
National Institute of Design, Kurukshetra, an autonomous institute is
established by the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Ministry of
Commerce & Industry, Government of India. Online Applications are invited for
the four years Graduate Diploma Program in Design (GDPD) for the academic
year 2016-17 at its transit campus located at Government Polytechnic, Umri,
Kurukshetra, Haryana.
NID Kurukshetra shall commence its academic program in October/November
2016 with a vision to be a global leader in Design Education & Research, and
become a torchbearer for innovative design directions in industry &
development sectors, aligned to the various initiatives of the Government of
India. For the first batch, total 60-students will be admitted.
National Institute of Design is internationally acclaimed brand as one of the
finest educational and research institutions for Industrial, Communication and
Textile Design. NID's vision is to emerge as a global leader in Design Education
and Research and become a torchbearer for innovative design directions in the
industry, commerce and development sectors. NID's trans-disciplinary environment consisting of diverse design domains helps in creating innovative and
holistic ecosystem for design learning.
NID offers a wide spectrum of design domains while encouraging
transdisciplinary design projects. NID is a unique institution with many
problem-solving capabilities, depths of intellect and a time-tested creative
educational culture in promoting design competencies and setting standards
of design education.
The overall structure of NID's programme is a combination of theory, skills,
design projects and field experiences supported by cutting edge design
studios, skill and innovation labs and the Knowledge Management Centre.
A unique feature of NID's design education programme is the openness of its
educational culture and environment where students from different faculties
and design domains interact with each other in a seamless manner. The benefit
of learning in such a trans-disciplinary context is immeasurable.
The Graduate Diploma Programme in Design [GDPD] commences with a two
semester rigorous Foundation Programme followed by 3 years of specialized
studies in any of the three disciplines offered in GDPD. The one year
Foundation Programme is geared towards developing values, perspectives,
sensorial skills and aesthetic sensitivity essential for a designer in making. It
introduces students to the fundamentals of design and helps develop ways of
perception, understanding of multidisciplinary nature of design and
relationship of design with human senses and emotions, culture, environment
and ecology.
Basic design 'studio' courses are augmented by introductory studies in
Humanities. This allows the students to develop a worldview, understanding of
Indian milieu and the socio-cultural context for design to operate. The varied
inputs over two semesters provide the necessary direction, stimuli, facilities
and experience to foster creativity and thereby help each individual to
discover their own identity and potential. The Foundation Programme is the
basis on which the remaining design curriculum is built.

The Graduate Diploma Program in Design [GDPD] commences with a two
semester rigorous Foundation Program followed by six semesters of specialized
studies in any of the three disciplines offered in GDPD. The one year
Foundation Program introduces students to the fundamentals of design and
helps develop ways of perception, aesthetic sensitivity, understanding of the
multi-disciplinary nature of design and relationship of design with human
senses and emotions, culture, environment and ecology. Based on merit cum
choice after successful completion of the Foundation Programme, Students
opt for their specialization/discipline choices.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
Industrial design is concerned primarily with the relationship between
Industries, systems and those who use them. This program inculcates usercentric approach and processes. Responsibility and concern towards the
social, physical and ecological environments is emphasized in the process of
developing innovative ideas. The Industrial Design Program assimilates inputs
in diverse domains such as human factors, cognitive ergonomics, form studies,
studio skills, advanced CAD, research methods, design management, materials
& manufacturing processes & social sciences. Emphasis is on process centric
approach that shapes a student's education through participation and
teamwork. Design projects form the core of an Industrial Designer's education
and cover broad areas that Industrial designers are likely to encounter in their
professional careers. Students are actively encouraged to participate in
collaborative projects with industry, social sector, government & MNCs.

COMMUNICATION DESIGN
The Communication Design Program prepares students to face the new
challenges and technological advancements in the field of traditional and
digital media. The fundamental importance of creating a visual vocabulary
through drawing, the development of aesthetic judgment, values of form,
proportion, image and word have become an integral part of learning
communication design. During their period of study, students in
communication design are encouraged to work on a variety of projects,
majoring in the selected sub-domain of communication design. A
communication design student, in addition to a thorough grounding in design
abilities and theoretical aspects, emerging global trends, undertakes the
study of the cultural and historical context in which designers need to function
as well as of the social and ethical factors that influence design decisions.
TEXTILE & APPAREL DESIGN
The Textile & Apparel Design Program strives to develop innovative and
synergetic approaches to design for diverse sectors of the textile & apparel
industry, markets, the social sector, informed by an appreciation of the
cultural heritage, socio-economic, ethical and environmental concerns that is
developed through fieldwork and research. Creative explorations from
concept to prototype are encouraged.
The curriculum emphasizes on building a variety of skills, in combination with
theoretical knowledge and practical application. The program commences
with the fundamentals of textile & apparel design. This includes, textile
fibers, weave structure, surface design, dyeing techniques, printing methods,
sewing techniques, constructed textiles and basic in-puts in garment design.
Through increasingly complex design projects, complemented by related
social sciences, fashion, trends, brand identity, technology and computeraided design, students are encouraged to design textiles for the textile,
apparel & furnishing industry and the craft sector. The program includes
several interdisciplinary projects of designing textiles & apparel for Public
Spaces/Exhibition/Interiors etc.
Exposure to all levels of industrial and craft production is given through field
visits and a short training with industry. Documentation of crafts introduces
the student to fieldwork and research methodology and enables the student to
develop a deeper understanding of the cultural issues that impact design.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND MEDICAL FACILITIES
Students are required to take individual medical insurance from a reputed
insurance company and inform NID of the details at the time of admission. It is
mandatory for the students to obtain Mediclaim Policy at their own cost to
cover at least Rs. One lakh per annum expenses in case of hospitalization.
Students are required to give the name and address of their local guardian in
Kurukshetra or nearby cities if they have one, so that NID authorities may
contact them in case of any emergency.
Initially, the Institute will tie-up with the Kurukshetra University,
NIT-Kurukshetra Government Polytechnic, Umri, etc for sports, cultural, extra
curricular activities and access to its Health Centre/ Medical Facilities.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
All candidates applying for GDPD programmes must fulfil the following
criteria:
CRITERION 1 - AGE LIMIT
- Upper age limit for candidates is 20 years of age (relaxable by three years
for reserved category) on or before July 1, 2016.
- General Category applicants: Candidates born on or before July 1, 1996 are
not eligible.
- Reserved Category applicants (OBC-NCL, SC, ST & PH): Candidates born on
or before July 1, 1993 are not eligible
CRITERION 2 - EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION
- Applications for Academic Year 2016-17 is open to applicants who have
passed or will appear for the qualifying examinations under the higher
secondary (10+2) from any recognized Board of Education such as
AISSCE/IB/ICSE, or equivalents, during the academic year 2015-16.
Examinations considered as equivalent to class XII are:

The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by a Central or State
Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities
(www.aiuweb.org).
Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the
National Defense Academy.
Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute
of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
Any Public School, Board or University examination in India or in a foreign
country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of
Indian Universities (AIU).
H.S.C. vocational examination.
General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London, Cambridge or
Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or
International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate
Office, Geneva.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Candidates who have completed Class XII (or equivalent) examination
outside India or from a Board not specified above should produce a
certificate from the Association of Indian Universities to the effect that the
examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination.

The above is to be paid in full on acceptance of offer of admission, on final
selection.
ADMISSION PROCESS
All candidates applying for the GDPD programme and having made necessary
payment for registration will be called for the Design Aptitude Test (DAT).
There will be one question paper containing Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
with OMR sheet for answers by the candidates. The question paper will be in
English and carry a total of 100 marks. At the announced test centres, the DAT
will be held from 10 a.m. to 1.00 ap.m. on 28th August 2016.
Based on the scores obtained in DAT shorlisted candidates only will be called
for a second round of exams at NID-Kurukshetra transit campus, as per the
announcements on the web-site.
Second-round of the test i.e. Studio/ Situation Tests will consist of different
sections in different format such as hands on practical assignments, etc. The
studio test will carry a total of 100 marks. The test will be conducted in English.
Candidates belonging to the OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD categories will be
declared as qualified on the basis of a relaxed criterion as under :
Based on the available number of seats, the top ranking candidates will be
offered admissions in the first merit list. The score of the last candidate in the
first merit list for category will be considered as cut off score for general
category. Based on this, relaxation in the cut-off scores of candidates in
reserved categories will be as follows:

Separate, category wise list of Waitlisted candidates shall be prepared in order
of merit.
Unfilled seats based on cut-off in merit or unavailability of candidate in the
OBC-NCL catetory will be allotted to General Category candidates. Seats
remaining vacant under the SC & ST categories shall not be allotted to
candidates belong to other categories.
The category selected by a candidate at the time of submitting the application
form will be final and requests for any change of category will NOT be
entertained at a later date.
No provisional admission shall be admissible for delay in submission of
caste/category certificate.
Reservation of Seats
Indian nationals belonging to certain categories are admitted under the seats
reserved for them in accordance with the rules of the Government of India.

Other Backward Classes belonging to the Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) should
be as per central list of OBCs (http://www.ncbc.nic.in) as of June 1, 2015.
Candidates belonging to the creamy layer of OBC are NOT entitled for
reservation. Such candidates are treated as belonging to the open
(i.e., unreserved) category.

Shortlisted candidates applying under reserved categories will have to
produce a prescribed Caste/Tribe certificate (preferably in English) from the
Competent Authorities of the respective States/Union Territories/National
Commission of Tribes. Candidates applying under OBC- non creamy layer
category will have to produce a prescribed caste certificate (preferably in
English) from the Competent Authorities of the respective States/Union
Territories certifying that they do not belong to the creamy layer.
Persons with Disability (PwD) – Three (3) percent horizontal reservation of
seats from the parent category in each programme cutting across all sections
i.e. SCs, STs, OBCs (Non-Creamy only) and General category.

candidates (with 40% or more disability) as published by the Government of

Candidates seeking admission under physically handicapped quota must
produce a Disability Certificate issued by the competent Medical authority,
Govt. of India, at the time of accepting the admissions offer.
INFRASTRUCTURE FACILITIES
The Haryana State Government has alloted a plot of land (20.34 acres) for the
permanent campus near village Umri, on NH-1 at a distance of about 150 kms
from New Delhi and 94 kms from Chandigrah by road. Construction of the
permanent campus has been awarded to the NBCC and constuction works is
already commenced.
In the meanwhile, just adjoining the permanent campus under construction,
the transit campus is identified in Government Polytechnic building in villageUmri, Kurukshetra.
The authorities of the Institute with the support of the Haryana State
Government is setting up the transit campus and accommodation facilities for
the students. It is proposed to arrange the accommodation facilities for Girls
Students on NIT-Kurukshetra campus and for boys students in Kurukshetra
University, located at approximately 9 kms only.
