Grades 3-7 SNAP, SHOOT, CLICK DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Grades 3-9 INTRO TO LATE FRENCH IMMERSION Grades 5-6 Reading and writing are the keys to success in all subjects and grades. A multifaceted approach will improve children’s ability to read and write with more fluency and accuracy. Various activities will improve comprehension through brainstorming, mind mapping and critical thinking. An individual assessment of the students’ writing will also be completed so that lessons can target trouble areas. Reading and writing skills will be enriched to pave the way for future success! Enjoy making super cool projects or movies about yourself and your favourite activities! Students will learn to create Prezis, take photos on Photo Booth to make a video on iMovie, explore safe websites that allow them to create their own storybook or pictures, and so much more! We will provide meaningful challenges and exciting experiences for students of all ages and abilities. Create your own skateboard or longboard! Learn how to operate various power/hand tools to create your own unique board. Students will choose a cool board design, cut it out, sand it, design it, paint it and grip tape it. You will leave with a completed board that will be ready to ride. All you will have left to do is put on the “trucks”. ($45 materials fee) Young chefs will have the opportunity to create mouth-watering appetizers and snacks. Students will leave the program with oodles of tasty snack ideas and be their own “party appetizer planners”. Young chefs will learn quick snack and munchie ideas and of course be able to sample and taste everything that they prepare and cook in their kitchens. Students will also leave the class at the end of the week with a collection of recipes that they can try at home. ($15 grocery fee) MATHEMATICS SUCCESS (English) Grades 1–9 Keep the fun in “fundamentals” to build confidence, understanding and success. Hands-on manipulatives and innovative strategies such as “Chisenbop” (finger math) will put theory into practice. Students who had difficulty with units during the school year will receive the necessary remedial teaching to ensure successful math experiences in future grades. Enrichment will also be provided by introducing keen students to future curriculum. MATHEMATICS SUCCESS Are you intrigued by the sport of rock climbing? Experience the pleasure of climbing in a regulated environment. Students will learn climbing skills and techniques and use new technology with a focus on safety. Harnesses and ropes with belay partnering, as well as “bouldering” horizontally along the rock wall will be experienced. Students will develop physical fitness in a super-charged and electric atmosphere. This is guaranteed to be a “ROCKING” good time for all levels! Study/organizational skills will be taught, modeled and reinforced so that students are able to apply these skills in next year’s courses. Emphasis will be given on note taking, mind mapping and summarizing main ideas. General organization tips not featured in most regular courses will be the focus. Students will learn various strategies that will apply to studying concepts in ALL subjects. Students will explore a hands-on “discovery” approach to science through investigations, experiments, activities and lab experiences (indoor and outdoor explorations). Invisible magnetism, electron flow, basic chemistry, electricity and many other interesting projects will be explored. Learn about science through hands-on interaction in a safe environment and have fun! Kids of all ages can be great photographers! This is a fun, hands-on, interactive and creative program where young photographers will explore their own creativity and self-‐expression using their own camera. Several elements of digital photography will be covered – from viewpoint to framing; subjects from family and faces, to nature and abstract objects. Photographers will learn to use their creative eye to focus on the world around them through the lens. Young photographers will also have the opportunity to use computers and iPhoto (taught by a certified professional photographer). Are you interested in taking the Late French Immersion Program in junior high? Do you want to get a bit of a head start? Try your hand at speaking French, learning French vocabulary, and solving math equations in French. This class will help you prepare for the immersion experience! ALL PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED IN AGE-APPROPRIATE INSTRUCTIONAL GROUPINGS AFTERNOON CLASSES 12:30–3:30 PM: Athletics, Fine Arts & Extracurricular ACTING & DRAMA EXTRAVAGANZA Grades 3-6/7-9 Young actors and actresses will role play different personalities and be given an opportunity to be expressive and explore their creative ideas. We’ll explore movement through miming and clowning around. We’ll also practice our improvisation skills through theatre sports, scripted work, musical theatre and exploring film/video. Depending on student interest, there may be a presentation of a mini-play for family and friends on the last day. Students will take on various roles in different topics and interact with peers in dramatic, musical and theatrical ways. Let your personality shine! BASKETBALL SKILL DEVELOPMENT Grades 4-9 This high energy course will develop basketball skills in an enjoyable, productive way. Progressions in shooting, passing, dribbling, lay-ups, post moves and other offensive skills will be covered. Defensive systems, skills and footwork will also be addressed. Individual and team skills will be reinforced during fun drills and games. Improve your skills and play for your school team next year. COLOURS, CLAY & CRITTERS Grades 3-7 CREATIVE KIDS ON THE MOVE Grades 1-6 Paint, clay, pastels and secret “gobbly-gook” are just some of the many materials we will use to create projects and masterpieces. We will get inspired by different critters of the world. Young artists will bring their tales and creatures to life through their hands and their imaginations! Please bring a painting shirt. Cooperative games, arts, crafts and some physical activities that stretch your brain and get us moving will keep children active and excited. Crafting will utilize recycled items as well as those that exist naturally in the environment. Each “creative kid” will also craft a unique t-shirt. Fun activities and projects will reinforce and enrich various core curricular teachings to challenge and stimulate children’s learning in many ways. HIP-HOP, JAZZ & LYRICAL DANCE Grades 2-7 If you love to move and groove, then this class is for you! In this exciting class, students will learn the latest moves observed in choreographed dances and the latest music videos. Selections will be taken from popular productions and videos. Students with an interest in cheerleading will get to try out some techniques. Depending on student interest, there will be a performance scheduled on the last day (taught by a qualified dance instructor). iCREATE Grades 5–9 COMPUTER CREATIONS Grades 3-9 Explore and use computer tools such as iMovie, iPhoto, Notebook, safe interactive websites and much more to create a variety of projects based on students’ interest. Students have the opportunity to create their own stopmotion video, interactive computer adventure, comic book, or even direct the creation of their own simple movie. The sky is the limit! Computer experience is not essential; we will provide personalized instruction for everyone. Want to create your own interactive art, photo book, story, simulation or computer game from Scratch? This course will teach how to complete this from start to finish. By the end of the course, you will have created your own fun creative project! Along with being creative on the computer, you will also learn the importance of balancing screen time with physical activity. At least half an hour per class will be designated for some fun games/physical activity. It’s a course with the perfect balance! Individual and team skills will be reinforced through a games focus. Favourite units include badminton, ball hockey, touch/flag football, swimming, softball, soccer and lacrosse. Many other activities will be explored based on student interest. FUN, FUN, FUN… for everyone, in a less competitive environment! Do you love food? Does the smell of chocolate and baking in the oven drive you crazy? Come learn how to bake as well as decorate your delicious temptations! Young chefs will have the opportunity to be “hands on” with everything they bake as well as tantalize their taste buds as they sample their creations. Students will also leave the class at the end of the week with a collection of recipes that they can try at home. ($15 grocery fee) Develop volleyball skills and knowledge in an enjoyable way with lots of energy. Learn to forearm pass and volley with better control and to spike and serve with more accuracy. Individual skills, court positioning and teamwork will be reinforced during game play. Improve your skills and play for your school team next year. An introductory art course which explores the basics of drawing and gives young artists a chance to create their own sketching portfolio. Students will learn how to effectively use value, shading and perspective in their artwork using a variety of black and white media. Projects include perspective drawings, cartoons/manga, as well as realistic outdoor sketching (weather dependent). This course is suitable for students new to art, as well as intermediate students who would like to improve technical skills. ($10 materials fee) An intermediate art course in which students will explore colour theory and painting techniques, as well as creating imaginative projects in a variety of mediums. Young artists will explore the uses of colour theory, colour mixing and how to creatively use unconventional materials in their artwork. Projects will include paintings, gel transfers and mixed media. This course is suitable for students who already have some artistic experience or who have taken the offered Drawing and Sketching class.
