A tradition of cooperation
A global rope team
The Cordillera Blanca is a spectacularly beautiful mountain region. Huaraz is
the South American mecca for outdoor adventurers and is considered to be
one of the best regions in the whole continent for climbers, hikers, trekkers and
backpackers. The Alpamayo is reputed to be one of the most beautiful peaks
in the world.
There is a long tradition of cooperation between Switzerland and Peru in the area
of mountain sports, initiated in 1977 when members of the Swiss Mountain
Guides Association (SMG) came to Peru to launch the education and training of
local mountain guides. The first guides accomplished the international certificate
in 1979 and in 1980 founded the Association of Mountain Guides of Peru
(AGMP). A year later the education of mountain guides became part of the
convention “Alps – Andes” between the Swiss and the Peruvian governments,
with the active participation of the SMG and the new AGMP. In 1990 the AGMP
became the first South American mountain guide association to be accepted as a
member of the IFMGA, the international organization responsible of the standards
and education for mountain guides worldwide.
The mission of the «Cooperación Alpinista Suiza – Perú» is based on the
two pillars of training and equipment. The aim of this commitment is to help
guides offer visitors the highest possible levels of safety and quality. Safety
and Quality are also key concerns for Mammut. We have championed these
values for almost 150 years. Mammut’s vision is to create a global rope
team of mountain sports enthusiasts who trust in Mammut products and are
proud to scale the world’s highest mountains together.
It's worth it. Recommendations
of the Cooperación Alpinista Suiza – Perú
Every year, tourists from all over the world flock to this fantastic region. Many of
them want to go on trekking or mountain tours. They have countless providers
to choose from, including private individuals offering guiding services. However,
not all of them are properly trained and reputable.
We recommend that you make sure your trekking guide is a member of the
AGOCP and that mountain guides are members of the AGMP. Only these
individuals have completed internationally recognised professional training to
ensure compliance with high international safety standards. It pays to listen to
the experience and recommendations of official guides. They are familiar with
the routes and know the necessary precautions to safely complete a trekking
or mountain tour. Trying to save money when selecting your guide is a
false economy. Hiring a cheap, and therefore unqualified, guide poses a risk.
Safety and quality have a name: AGMP and AGOCP. You can now
recognise official Peruvian mountain and trekking guides: they will be
equipped with Mammut’s high-quality products.
History of the
Cooperación Alpinista Suiza – Perú
With the aim of creating long-term prospects for official mountain and trekking
guides in Peru, in 2007, with the support of Swisscontact, the cooperation was
relaunched under the project «Cooperación Alpinista Suiza – Perú».
Mission & aims of the
Cooperación Alpinista Suiza – Perú
Mammut is particularly proud to be a partner to official mountain and
trekking guides in one of the world’s most beautiful climbing regions, and is
therefore making its contribution towards helping both guides and visitors to
enjoy an unforgettable mountain experience.
Specifically, Mammut is pursuing the following objectives as part of the
«Cooperación Alpinista Suiza – Perú»:
The success story of the AGMP is set to be repeated in the area of trekking.
Founded in 2008, the Association of Official Trekking Guides of Peru (AGOCP)
enjoys government recognition. The AGOCP has been a candidate of the Union
of International Mountain Leader Associations (UIMLA) since 2010 and hopes to
be admitted as a full member in 2012.
• Improving the working conditions of Peruvian guides through functional
equipment
In addition to good training and ethics, modern and high quality equipment is an
important requirement for a professional guide. It is for this reason that in 2010,
the Swiss mountain sports company Mammut decided to get involved in the
«Cooperación Alpinista Suiza – Perú».
• Improving the rescue system and practical rescue operations in the
Peruvian mountains
• Providing mountain and trekking guides with technical support in relation
to training and development
