Summertime is the season for design professionals
across the southwest to gather to attend the METROCON
Expo & Conference, which is taking place August 11 &
12 at Dallas Market Hall in Dallas, Texas. METROCON is
the conference and the source to connect with Hospitality
to Healthcare and Retail to Residential. The volunteer
partnership between the ASID Texas Chapter and the
IIDA Texas/Oklahoma Chapter strives each year to make
available the finest conference experience possible with
the support of dedicated Sponsors and Exhibitors.
To ensure you do not overlook the following important dates we have listed the information for you to
mark on your calendar TODAY:
JUNE 1: Attendee registration opens online. Sign up for
continuing education requirements and secure a seat
in the seminar you need by registering online on the
Attendees Overview page at www.metrocon.info. Members
of ASID and IIDA may attend the tradeshow FREE and
register for any amount of courses for $50.00. NOTE,
for on-site registration there will be an additional $10.00
charge.
New Member Policy: To qualify as a Member and receive
discounted tradeshow and/or continuing education
pricing, Attendees must be in good standing in the official ASID and IIDA database on May 1, 2011. This includes
Practitioner Members, Student Members, or an Industry
Partner Representative. If not in either one of these official databases on May 1, 2011, then the Attendee will
not qualify as a Member and will need to pay the NonMember pricing.
CEU: Continuing Education Courses will include will
include barrier-free/universal design and sustainable
design. 34 classes on Thursday and 14 classes on Friday
for a total of 51 classes to choose from. NOTE: When
classes sell out, stand-by openings may be available
on-site during the conference due to no shows, but they
cannot be guaranteed.
Lunch: Box lunch selections will be available for both
Thursday and Friday when registering for CEU classes
in addition to the on-site lunch counter and food kiosks.
$12.00 will reserve your lunch, so no standing in line
or remembering to bring cash.
Valet Parking: If you do not want to park in one of
the many free parking spaces, valet parking will again
be available for Attendees for a fee. A shuttle service
sponsored by the Dallas Market Center will be provided
for attendees staying at authorized METROCON hotels.
JULY 29 - Online Attendee Registration Closes. This
will be the last day to lock in your selection of courses
to avoid paying an extra $10.00. DMC will be managing
registration and offering additional savings on travel
and hotel expense, click on the Travel link under the
Event Information tab.

Focus on the Face of the Texas Chapter

“Focus on the Face of the Chapter” is a series of articles with the objective of
showcasing valued members of our Texas Chapter who are working with our
Design Communities to fulfill our Strategic Plan’s goals though their humanitarian and community service. Claudia Cowperthwaite, Allied Member ASID
and Membership Director of the Board of the Texas Chapter, has served as a
volunteer with Saint Louise House since 2007. Saint Louise House is an apartment style long-term supportive housing program. Its mission is to provide a
safe, nurturing environment for homeless women and their children. Licensed
social workers and case managers work with residents to set goals specific to
each family and provide on-site support as they work to become self-sufficient. They provide housing, case management, counseling, life skills training,
employment services, and access to healthcare, education and child care resources.
Recognizing the dignity and worth of every person, Saint Louise House empowers
women to transform their lives, the families, and their community. Because
Saint Louise House believes in family, they work hard to keep women and children together.
Saint Louise House, a non-profit organization in Austin,
Texas, is in the business of making homes, much like designers.
However, they provide homes for single mothers and their children that have found themselves without a home.
Designers have spent their careers making clients’ homes
and offices places of comfort and beauty. Surrounding others with things that
make life easier and more pleasant. In addition, it’s been Saint Louise House’s
experience that designers are also a very generous group of people. Because of that
generosity, many vulnerable Austin families’ lives are much, much easier.
Since 2000, Saint Louise House has been providing deeply affordable housing
and supportive services to women-led families experiencing homelessness in
Austin, Texas. Since that time, more than 100 families have called them home. Since
the organization’s inception they have grown from 11 units of housing to the capacity
to house 46 families. This growth would not have been possible without the generous
support of donors and volunteers. One supporter in particular is Claudia Cowperthwaite,
Allied Member ASID, and membership director ASID Texas.
Claudia has been involved with Saint Louise House since 2007. She has donated
furniture and house wares, set up and decorated apartments and sponsored families
at Christmas. Most recently she has served on the Board of Directors’ Development
and Communications Committee and collaborated on the design of the new community center.
The ASID Austin Design Community also is a proud supporter of St. Louise
House.

Written in our National Chapter Core Values, as they relate stewardship, I found this statement: “Through volunteerism and partnerships

Claudia with her niece and fellow volunteer, Bonnie Devany, put the
finishing touches on an apartment with furniture donated from K&B
Homes.

Plan Strategically for the Future . . .
For all of you who have had questions in regard to how we plan for our Texas
Chapter Budget each year, I can tell you from personal experience that it is a very
careful and deliberate process. If you have been reading the articles that I have
written previously on the Strategic Planning Process, you know that integrated
within the Strategic Plan is the Texas Chapter budget and each action/activity/event
within the plan is assigned a dollar amount as an income or expense item on a
worksheet and every other income and expense within the Texas Chapter is also
assigned a dollar amount within the projected budget. This enables us to propose
a budget each fiscal year for approval to the Texas Chapter Board and to the
Society along with the proposed Strategic Plan. However, prior to this proposal
there is a procedure called developing a work plan during which the proposed
Strategic Plan is analyzed and evaluated for spending trends over the previous
years to determine how best to distribute and/or redistribute the funding to the
Chapter.
A valuable tool utilized in this budgeting consideration is to observe the exceptions to the Strategic Plan. At each Texas Chapter Board Meeting it is the responsibility of the President-Elect with the help of the Texas Chapter Administrator to
report on those aspects of the plan which fall outside of the expected performance
range. In other words, are there actions/activities/events which are performing
differently within the Texas Chapter and/or the Design Communities than we originally anticipated when the Strategic Planning Committee included them in the
Strategic Plan? This change in performance whether it is under performance or
over performance can affect the budgeting process for the upcoming year. These
exceptions relate to budgetary items within the plan in regard to where we may
have over estimated or under estimated the allotted amount necessary for funding
in that particular area. Basically as we consider the tactics represented within
the plan, actions/activities/events most of which require some amount of funding,
we can then better evaluate how to budget for the next year as we have the current
year’s expense trend as a monetary model.
There are also recurring expenses which need to be factored in the budget which
are typically incurred by all ongoing concerns. These consist of items such as our
accounting expenses, auditing expenses as we undergo a complete

The ASID Texas Chapter is moving into the 21st century and going green
with the elections of Board members being done by email. Only Chapter
members on record as of October 1, 2011 will be eligible to vote. The ballot
will be emailed to the eligible members on January 15, 2012. You will have
until January 25, 2012 to return the ballot via email.
If you don’t have an email address or prefer to receive a paper ballot,
you will need to call Pat Gallagher, the Chapter Administrator, at 214-7481541 and ask that a paper ballot be mailed to you. You will need to call before
January 10, 2012, to insure that you have it in time for the balloting. The paper
ballot must be returned to the ASID office by January 25, 2012.

independent audit yearly as we are categorized as a not-for-profit 501( c ) 6,
Chapter administrator’s salary, credit card charges, legal expenses, payroll taxes,
general supplies, general postage, phone bill, internet provider, property tax,
Chapter office rent, Chapter insurance and many more. We operate the largest
Chapter in the nation and it is very successful thanks to you, our valued members.
Because of the size of the Chapter and the distance between the eight Design
Communities it is also more expensive to operate than other Chapters which have
all of their members in one regional location.
Now as I have mentioned in previous newsletters on the Strategic Plan, the Vision,
Mission and Goals are critical aspects for the Strategic Planning Committee as
they move forward planning the future of the Chapter.
As we meet for the budget process we begin the implementation of the result of
that planning process through the Chapter’s work plan which consists of the
Strategic Plan’s Initiatives, Strategies and Tactics as they are assigned a dollar
amount. We have to remember that as with all businesses cash flow is critical to
our Chapter. The Society has generously implemented a payment plan for members
over the past two years which has somewhat impacted that cash flow. Rather
than receiving a lump sum payment from which we as a Chapter are able to draw
interest and maintain a sizeable reserve, we now receive payments on a staggered basis as many of our members are choosing to pay out their membership
in increments throughout the year. With that in mind, we must plan for our funding
and spending based upon the receipt of receipt of revenue. As with all businesses,
all expense and income items are coded and once the process is finalized the
Texas Chapter Board must approve the final budget for the next year. The budget
is then submitted to the Society as well. At that time, there may be course corrections, but typically that is not the case.
Any good plan must be subject to an ongoing evaluation and ours is no different.
During the Chapter Board Meeting, the Board Members and the Chairmen of the
Design Communities report on their areas of responsibility which allows us to
continue to monitor the Strategic Plan. As I mentioned earlier, at each Board
Meeting the President-Elect reports on exceptions to the plan so we can also
monitor the plan from a budgetary perspective. Both of these procedures enables
the board to consider the success of the elements of the plan and determine if
there is room for improvement or if in fact that particular element is perhaps an
action/activity/event which will need to be brought to the attention of the Strategic
Planning Committee in the future for possible elimination from the plan.
I do hope that this series of articles has given you a better understanding of the
due diligence expended in planning for your future and on your behalf as a member
of the Texas Chapter of ASID. I also trust that it has served to give you an overview
of the Strategic Planning process.

TAID-Texas Legislation and the
Impact on Interior Designers
Between 2009 and January 2011, it was the proverbial quiet before the storm.
Four bills were being crafted that would affect the business of interior design in
Texas. The main purpose of the Texas Association for Interior Design is to keep
you abreast of legislation which could impact your business.
ASID Interior Designers provide many types of services from decorative to
planning the minute details of a hospital room so that a patient does not get an
antibiotic resistant illness from being in the hospital. No one type of interior
design category is more important. Each client believes that their project is the
most important thing we should have on our priority list whether is it residential or healthcare.
In the past two years, our profession has faced monumental challenges at
national and state levels. When you receive this newsletter, the final decision
about HB3167 relating to Occupational Licensing repeal for interior designers
may be decided. As of this date, the bill is pending in committee, the testimony
has been heard and the fiscal notes are being studied.
The EPA Lead Safe Paint regulations and the Window Coverings Manufacturers
Association/ANSI Corded Window Covering Standards have long ranging effects
on how you offer products and services.
I am partially through the research on the Corded Window Coverings Standard
and its implications for those of us who resell corded items to cover windows.
Mini-blinds, woven woods, cord operated draperies with hold-downs, vertical
Blinds, roman shades, wood blinds, and motorized window coverings if they have
accessible cords are all on the list. Be sure your workroom has the exacting manufacturing standards available for $36. It is now incumbent upon every reseller to
be aware that the lawsuits name the manufacturer, the distributor, the reseller
(us), our hired installer, and now for the first time, the previous homeowner of a
home. Some items in the “recall repair” kit do not fix the problem. Hundreds of
cord strangulations ranging from infants to 80 year olds are documented by the
Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Did you know that for each new member you recruit you get a voucher for
$50.00 to apply towards membership dues and ASID merchandise? Your recruit
has to become a member of ASID and stay a member for four months in order
to count. Once you have recruited a new member you will receive a voucher code
that can be redeemed online.
Want to get credit for spreading around all that love? Make sure to fill out a
Share The Love card with your name and ASID membership number and give it
to your new recruit. They have to include your information on their membership application for you to get credit.

A Message to Members from the ASID Staff
Over the past several months, ASID and its members have been leading
the effort against the attempted deregulation of commercial interior design
in Florida. It is with great pleasure that we announce to you today that House
Bill 5005, the “Deregulation of Professions and Occupations” bill, was defeated
in the Senate on Friday, May 6, 2011, by a resounding 32-6 vote.
This victory clearly benefits the thousands of registered interior designers
across Florida. Their right to maintain hard-earned voluntary registration,
that provides the opportunity to work in commercial settings, benefits all
designers across the country.
Our success in Florida would not have been possible without the
commitment from ASID’s members. To support our efforts in Florida, ASID’s
team worked tirelessly to distill misinformation about our profession and to
ensure legislators understood the value of commercial interior design
registration.
While the defeat of H.B. 5005 stands as a clear victory for all interior
designers, our fight in Florida and across the country is not done yet. Our
profession will continue to be confronted by similar opposition, so we must
remain vigilant against misinformation campaigns such as the ones we faced
in Florida and stand behind one unified message. The future of professional
interior design depends on it.

ASID Requirements
Overview
ASID bylaws and policies require all practitioner members (professional and allied members) to earn a minimum of 0.6 approved CEUs
every two years. This is a required condition of membership. The
current reporting period began Jan. 1, 2010 and will end Dec. 31, 2011.
Paying your dues indicates that you agree to remain in compliance.
If you need help finding CEUs in your area please contact your chapter
and request information on upcoming events in your area. You can
also take online courses for credit at any time at ASID UNi.
This member requirement strengthens the interior design profession by improving individual attitudes, competencies, knowledge and skills in
subject areas essential to the growth and success of the industry.
6 Hours Every Two Years
Practitioner members (professional and allied members) of the Society are
required to complete six contact hours of continuing education coursework (equal
to 0.6 CEUs) every two years. To qualify, coursework must be taken from an
approved provider such as:
• IDCEC
• State Regulatory Board
• CIDA-accredited college/university
Reporting Period
The last reporting period has ended (Dec. 31, 2009) and the current reporting
period for all practitioner members (professional and allied members) began Jan.
1 2010 and will end Dec. 31, 2011. (Only CEUs earned between Jan. 1, 2010, and
Dec. 31, 2011, will fulfill the requirement.)

Reporting Compliance
During the last reposting period we asked members to report their compliance
through an online mechanism. ASID wants to make reporting as easy as possible
for members therefore we have slightly changed this process. Now when you pay
your dues it indicates that you agree to remain in compliance with the CEU requirement because it is a required condition of membership. You do not have to submit
any information about the courses you have attended and you do not have to
report anything online. The only exception will be in the event you are one of
the members selected for an audit, in which case more detailed records will be
requested.
Automatic Extension from Last Reporting Period
If for some reason, you did not earned .6 CEUs for the last reporting period ending
Dec 31, 2009, you will be granted an automatic extension to remedy the deficiency. In this case, you would be required to show that you’ve earned a total 1.2
CEUs or more by the end of the current reporting cycle, ending Dec. 31, 2011. (0.6
CEUs for last reporting period and 0.6 CEUs for the current reporting period= 1.2
CEUs)

Steinway Hall – Dallas Welcomes John Lennon “Imagine” Series Limited
Edition Piano with Thursday, April 14 Grand Unveiling Celebration

one of only 100 exclusive Steinway & Sons John Lennon “Imagine” Series Limited
Edition pianos at their Dallas showroom. The Steinway & Sons special edition piano
commemorates the 70th birthday of John Lennon on October 9, 2010.
Steinway Hall – Dallas hosted a grand unveiling event on Thursday, April 14,
2011, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and featured the Lennon Imagine Series piano
and Steinway Lyngdorf audio systems.
Modeled after the white Steinway grand piano presented by John Lennon to
Yoko Ono on her birthday, February 18, in 1971, Imagine Series pianos feature
several special, unique elements that trace their connection to Lennon:
• Lennon’s signature graces the treble side of the fallboard.
• Each music desk features one of four original drawings by Lennon, including
those titled Come Together, Grand Piano, Freda People, and Self-Portrait.
• The piano’s cast-iron plate is stamped with the opening bars to “Imagine.”
• Excerpted lyrics from “Imagine” are written along the bass side of the inner
rim, visible when the piano lid is fully open.
The Imagine Series piano at Steinway Hall – Dallas has Lennon’s SelfPortrait on its music desk. Steinway & Sons will build only 25 Self-Portrait pianos
worldwide.

Spring Thing at Decorative Center Dallas
Much fun and discovery was had by the interior design community at Spring
Thing 2011. The April event at Decorative Center Dallas offered showroom hospitality, a CEPH/CEU course and several amazing raffle prizes.
On day one, attendees enjoyed luncheons at Miele, Kisabeth Furniture, Poggenpohl,
Pettigrew Associates and National Office Furniture. Lunch was followed by a tour
of 15 showroom open house offerings throughout Decorative Center Dallas. That
evening, McGannon Showrooms hosted a Happy Hour, which was followed by a
complimentary CEPH/CEU course presented by Donna Vining and hosted by Scott
+ Cooner. The day concluded with cocktail party at Mody & Mody where winners
of the raffle drawing were announced.
Day two included the Spring Thing Fling Progressive Cocktail Party. The raffle
drawing for prizes over $1,000 took place at TKO Associates, following the chef
demonstration at bulthaup and Italian cocktails and appetizers at FENDI Casa.

student chapter was proud to sponsor
Kelley Barnett, president-elect of the
Texas Chapter of ASID, to visit the ACU
campus on April 1, 2011. This event
welcomed students from all departments
to listen to Kelley’s personal experience
with her career in interior design. Kelley offered her testimony, sharing her
passion for interior design and how she has integrated her faith throughout her
career. This motivational event reminded students to consider their unique
passions and provided insight into how those passions will work together with
their chosen careers to eventually inspire lives of purpose.

Also this month, Fourteen Abilene Christian University Interior Design majors
traveled to San Antonio to tour Jacobs Engineering and Marmon Mok architectural and design firm on April 4, 2011. Both firms provided tours and detailed
discussions of how the firm works to secure clients and meet their individual
needs. During the tours, the students enjoyed viewing project packages,
which included specifications and drawings, and had the opportunity to see the
office environment in which the firms’ employees work. The presentations at
each firm provided a clear sense of their wide variety of client types, including:
government, community, health care, higher education, non-profit, preservation, and commercial. Despite the category of client, a team-based approach to
design was evident during the tour. The differences between each firm's approach
to design and the broader career of interior design expressed just how unique
individual firms can be.
Baylor University News
Sonya Odell and Elizabeth Stanfield, BOKA Powell ASID members, presented to
the Baylor ASID chapter meeting in March on what professionals look for in skills,
interviews, and resumes. They discussed potential experience options in the
current job market and the value of using their ASID network.

■ The Austin Community ASID is looking forward to the annual Spring Board To
Design Event. This year’s Spring Board will be held at the beautiful Nest Modern

■ Carolyn Albert-Kincl, ASID found out recently that a house for which she was
responsible for all the interior selections has been chosen to be on 2011 Austin

■ Walker Zanger was our host for the month of April and presented a great
program on "Tile Trends for the Digital Age - maintaining the human touch”. Jared
Becker, Executive Creative Director of Walker Zanger, shared his personal views
on important trends in tile and stone design and how developments in technology
are shaping those trends. He illustrated many of these trends with new products
debuted at the recent Coverings Tile and Stone Exhibition, which was held in Las
Vegas in March of this year.
■ Fendi Showroom in the Design district will be our host for the quarterly
Networking Happy Hour which is scheduled for April 28. These quarterly meetings provide a great opportunity to network to our members.
■ The DesignOvation 2011 ceremony will be held on May 20 at the Women’s
TKO

Museum. We are looking forward to an evening of celebration as we recognize
and reward outstanding interior design by our fellow ASID Dallas Design Community
Members.

El Paso Design Community

■ The January meeting was hosted by 3Form for a lunch and learn. The speaker,
Jerry Fornell with 3Form, gave a CEU on “Demystifying Resins”. It was
extremely informative and introduced a new material to many of designers who
had not worked with 3Form previously.
■ Our February meeting was a tour of the Historic Plaza Theater. It was a
great reminder of the El Paso history and showcased the beautiful 1930’s theater
and its monumental renovation.
■ Then in March we were hosted at the recently renovated El Paso Club by
Koroseal wall coverings. A CEU presentation was given on specifying wood veneer
wall covering. The high light of the meeting was a visit by Texas Chapter President
Dianne Etheridge.

Lighting meeting in March
■ March 30th, we had what we hope
is the first of several Industry Partner Luncheon at Arizona Tile. Beth Bender of
Design Guide, Susan Hatch of Susan Hatch Sales, Jennifer Mitchell of The Kitchen
Source, Bill O’Conner of Dallas Sight and Sound, Adrienne White of The Closet
Factory, Lindsey Ward of Arizona Tile and Christie Montis of Ferguson joined Robin
Burrill ASID and Phyllis Thomas Crim ASIS for a round table discussion. Topics
were how the Ft Worth DC can help IP Members, how to connect designers with
IPs, meeting formats and ideas, and planning a joint Ft Worth/ Dallas DC
meeting for IP Members. We felt this was a very productive meeting and plan to
implement suggestions immediately.
■ We also launched our new Premium Sponsorship Program at this luncheon.
This invites IP Members to purchase package sponsorships for the year. Three
participation levels have different benefits spanning the three major Ft Worth
DC events, plus special recognition at monthly meetings. This allows IP Members
to budget their financial involvement, and our DC better planning of special events.

San Antonio Design Community

■ The San Antonio Design Community has been
busy in 2011! We started the year off and running
with several events.
In January, we hosted a meeting with all our local
IP members to discuss how ASID can help them
and how we can all work together to begin planning our events for the upcoming year.
■ In March, Emser Tile and Cox Tile co-hosted a
meeting at the Emser Tile showroom. Fun was had
by all as we took away valuable information on
stone products as well as radiant flooring.

SAN ANTONIO: January IP
■ In April, we had a great meeting co-hosted by meeting at Emser Tile
Vigini Studios and Sherwin Williams. Brian Patton
of Sherwin Williams presented a CEU on paint coatings and technology followed
by a wonderful faux finish demonstration from Nicola Vigini of Vigini Studios.
We had a wonderful hands-on experience with some groin vault hand-painted

murals as well as some of the fantastic finishes that Vigini Studios is able to
