Made preliminary arrangements for the 2016 TAEA Leadership Institute. Working on winding up my presidential term and dealing with associated details. Awarded TAEA Dale Battle Memorial Conference Scholarships granted by the board. Promoted Conference 2015 – formulated e‐blasts, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ posts. Worked with our Awards Chair to finalize awards. Planning the November 2015 Executive Board meeting. Worked on graphics for the conference app and worked with Core‐Apps to get the app launched. Updating annual conference materials and working with Core‐Apps and TAEA Headquarters. Completed the elections process for 2015‐2017 leadership cycle including a special run‐off election for President‐elect. Worked with WellDon / Jackie Brewer to update the website Communicating with all areas of TAEA Leadership. Fielded questions from the membership. September 2015 Since the June 2015 Executive Board Meeting, I have been working on the following projects: Worked with Regional Reps on Regional Conferences for 2015. Monitoring and soliciting conference workshop proposals. Awarded TAEA scholarship and grants granted by the board. Promoted Conference 2015 – formulated e‐blasts, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ posts. Worked with our Awards Chair to get awards underway. Planning the September 2015 Executive Board meeting. Contracted the conference app and completed the MCC contract process for 2015‐2016. Updating annual conference materials and working with Core‐Apps and TAEA Headquarters. Attended the NAEA Western Region Conference in Santa Fe with Suzy Greene. Worked with Jackie Brewer to get elections materials for deployment. Worked with WellDon / Jackie Brewer to update the website Communicating with all areas of TAEA Leadership. Monitoring and soliciting conference workshop proposals. Gathered the TAEA scholarship and grants for consideration by the board. Continued to work with Jackie Brewer, Jami Bevans and Gretchen Bell to get the Executive Board and TAEA Leadership areas updated and reorganized. Promoted Conference 2015 – formulated e‐blasts, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ posts. Worked with our Awards Chair to get potential awards candidates before the board for consideration. Planning the June 2015 Executive Board meeting. Helped with YAM Exhibition and Reception. Updating annual conference materials and working with Core‐Apps and TAEA Headquarters. Attended the NAEA Conference in New Orleans with our TAEA leadership team. Facilitated CEDFA Presentation Planning w ith Jen Raybourn and Amanda Lanahan. Served as Region 13 North VASE Director at State VASE in Dallas. Worked with WellDon / Jackie Brewer to update the website Ready materials for Western Region in Santa Fe as appropriate. Communicating with all areas of TAEA Leadership. Created the May 2015 TAEA Leadership Update to communicate effectively with the Executive Board, Executive Council, Regional Representatives, Executive Director and MCC. Fielded questions from the membership. March 2015 Since the January 2015 Executive Board Meeting, I have been working on the following projects: Completed and distributed the TAEA Annual Conference Planner. Completed and posted to the website the TAEA Forward; Strategic Plan for 2015‐2020. Worked with board members and TMEA staff to get Arts in Education Day at the Capital packet created, organized, stuffed and distributed. Updated and launched the TAEA scholarship and grants process to the membership. Worked with Jackie Brewer, Jami Bevans and Gretchen Bell to get the Executive Board and TAEA Leadership areas updated and reorganized. Promoted Big Art Day – formulated e‐blasts, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ posts. Prepared for the Spring 2015 meetings – Executive Council, Council‐at‐Large, Regional Representatives. Created the January & March 2015 TAEA Leadership Update to communicate effectively with the Executive Board, Executive Council, Regional Representatives, Executive Director and MCC. Worked with Elizabeth Battle to solidify the Dale Battle Memorial Conference Scholarship and posted information to the website. Created and distributed our first TAEA Foundation Report to Foundation Trustees. Fielded questions from the membership. January 2015 Since the November 2014 Executive Board meeting, I have been working on the following projects: Communicating with all areas of TAEA Leadership. Accepted resignation of Linda Cross. Appointed Jen Holsinger‐Raybourn as new Youth Art Month VP‐elect and Christian Parker as Private School Chair. Working with WellDon to upgrade our lesson plan template and update various website areas. Attended the K‐16 Summit in January 2015. Dealing with lots of closing details relevant to my work on Conference 2014 in San Antonio (ie. billing, surveys etc… Dealt with member requests involving refunds for conference – fewer this year than last year. Responding to member requests for refunds for Conference 2013. Responding to member requests for refunds for Conference 2013. Renewed the TAEA Professional Development credit number with the Texas Education Agency. Continued to work with the three conference co‐chairs for Galveston 2015. Working on Be Visual/Big Art Day. Readying the scholarship and grant process to be opened for 2015. Worked with Kristen Marstaller on nominations and pushing out information to the membership via website, e‐blast etc… to help fill the ballot. Organizing, registering, booking airfare and preparing to represent TAEA at the National Art Education Association (NAEA) conference in New Orleans on March 23‐ 29, 2015. 3 Annual Report Office: President, Tim Lowke November 2015 Goals and Objectives for Upcoming Year My goals for the beginning of my term for Past President include: 1. Supporting Suzy Greene as she begins her Presidency – providing feedback, experience etc… to support the projects she would like accomplished during her term (2015‐2017). 2. Continue planning the upcoming 2016 TAEA Leadership Institute including programming and promotion. 3. Promoting the 2016 Leadership Scholar Cohort. 4. Work with the Texas Art Education Foundation (TAEF) to continue to develop it into a functioning and beneficial part of the organization. 5. Work to develop a fundraising/awareness event for the 2016 conference in Dallas for the Texas Art Education Foundation (TAEF). 6. Working to promote service leadership within our membership to grow candidates for the 2017‐2019 ballot. 7. Jen Holsinger‐Raybourn (VP YAM elect) and I have worked hard together to solidify our YAM program for Texas art students and their teachers, and we look forward to Jen stepping into the YAM VP position in November. 2015 has been a banner year for YAM in Texas. We’ve accomplished quite a lot, and improved the program. Highlights for this year include: Replacing our old PVC‐pipe flag stands with new, easier to use and transport banner stands Refitting all YAM flags with a sleeve to accommodate hanging them in the new stands Increasing the number of attendees (and seats) to 400 for the YAM State Capital Celebration at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum Bringing our new Texas First Lady, Cecilia Abbott, and her staff, into our YAM and Governor’s Gallery program; she then increased the Governor’s Gallery from 10 artworks to 13, which includes one she chose to hang in her personal office Introducing a new YAM All State Artist lapel pin for all YAM artists, both exhibit artists and flag winners Introducing online YAM reporting Continuing our solid presence at the TASA/TASB Fall Conference with a large art exhibit (nearly 200 artworks), student demo artists, and an Arts Advocacy booth, where we network with superintendents and school board members from across Texas…Art Keeps Kids in School is our theme Increasing the number of art exhibits at the Texas Education Agency building to three with the addition of an exhibit selected from the 2014 TASA/TASB artworks Creating materials to distribute to Texas lawmakers at the 2015 Arts Lobby Day at the State Capitol Publishing an Arts Advocacy column in Texas School Business magazine Winning the national 2015 Claire Flanagan (Grand) Award for our Texas YAM program and report from Council for Art Education, who works in conjunction with NAEA We are looking forward to Jen’s tenure as YAM VP, and will continue making Texas a shining star in the national Youth Art Month movement. Goals and Objectives for Upcoming Year 9 Annual Report Office: Secretary, Gretchen Bell November 2015 Summary of Activities of the Past Year January 2015 Since our November Conference in San Antonio, I have been working on revising and editing the minutes and motions for the Executive Board Meetings and Council at Large. I have also been meeting and corresponding regularly with the Galveston 2015 Conference Co‐Chairs, President elect and Local Committee chairs about brainstorming and planning a great conference for the members of TAEA next year. Many great ideas have been shared and discussed as to how to improve on past conferences based on member feedback all while adhering to our budget and incorporating some new ideas! March 2015 Since our January Meeting, I have been working on revising and editing the minutes and motions for the Executive Board Meetings and Council at Large. I have forwarded all Executive Board and CAL minutes to Jackie Brewer to update on the website. I have also been meeting and corresponding regularly with the Galveston 2015 Conference Co‐Chairs, President elect and Local Committee chairs about brainstorming and planning a great conference for the members of TAEA next year. We have had another great meeting to report where each committee is on their planning. Many great ideas have been shared and discussed as to how to improve on past conferences based on member feedback all while adhering to our budget and incorporating some new ideas! I worked VASE 4S and 4W; both amazing events that I greatly enjoyed being a part of and will be working at both 4W and 4E Jr VASE events. I registered our Fine Arts Round‐Up at Hairgrove Elementary for Big Art Day and the event was amazing. All of our Kindergarten thru 5th grade students were able to showcase their talents in the Fine Arts by performing songs and choreographed dance routines all while being surrounded by their artwork that parents, teachers and visitors were able to be entertained by. June 2015 Since our March Meeting, I have been working on revising and editing the minutes and motions for the Executive Board Meetings and Council at Large I have also been meeting and corresponding regularly with the Galveston 2015 Conference Co‐Chairs, President elect and Local Committee chairs about brainstorming and planning a great conference for the members of TAEA next year. We met in March for each committee chair to report where they are in the planning process. Many great ideas have been developed since our last meeting that we are hoping to incorporate into the existing schedule. We met at Moody Gardens for a photo op to be included in the Conference handbook and conduct a walk‐through where committee members could see the space and visualize how their ideas would work. Everyone was able to talk through and compare ideas from past conferences at Moody Gardens to give insight to new committee members and guide them in the right direction. I have also been preparing to teach a week long Fine Arts Camp at Willow Meadows Baptist Church for preschool where their artwork will be included in a collaborative art piece with elementary for a Fine Arts Show at the end of the week. 10 Annual Report Office: Secretary, Gretchen Bell November 2015 Summary of Activities of the Past Year (cont’d) September 2015 Since our June Meeting, I have been working on revising and editing the minutes and motions for the Executive Board Meetings and Council at Large. I attended the Blue Ribbon Board meeting where I took notes and participated in conversations with the rest of the Board about changes and revisions to the VASE Rules and Policies. I have also been meeting and corresponding regularly with the Galveston 2015 Conference Co‐Chairs, President elect and Local Committee chairs about brainstorming and planning a great conference for the members of TAEA in Galveston. We finalized a T‐shirt design and started collecting sizes and money for committee member shirts. We recently met on September 3rd at the Children’s Museum of Houston for each committee chair to give a report of the progress and any challenges/questions they have. All committee members were shown the TAEA website where all of the flyers they created for each event can be located. Many great ideas have been developed and are coming into play and we are excited about sharing them with membership at conference. The 2015‐2016 school year is now in full swing and as always, my schedule is busy, busy, busy. I am working on getting Miss Cy‐Fair to be a presenter to my 5th grade girls group Dazzling Dolphins and going to be ordering supplies for our group through a PlayOn! grant that I received for $500 to purchase personal hygiene packs, healthy snacks, volleyballs and kick balls for our group to use during our meetings/lessons. Goals and Objectives for Upcoming Year 11 Annual Report Office: Treasurer, Jami Bevans November 2015 Summary of Activities of the Past Year I have worked diligently to keep track of TAEA’s financial status by posting in a spreadsheet that allows the membership to better understand how funds are allocated. TAEA is in great financial shape. We have been able to start an anniversary fund for the 2017 conference. We have instigated a transfer of funds to the Memorial Scholarship Fund that will occur at the end of this fiscal year. We have transferred a little to VASE to allow VASE to grow their scholarship funds and we’ve adjusted the budget for Regional Reps to encourage their presence and participation in CAL. We’ve instigated an audit with Sutton Frost Cary, LLC which is the same group that does our taxes. This is a practice that should occur at least every five years or so and it had been nine years since we had it done last. With the insight of a great Board, we have put into place several programs to benefit our membership. And as we continue to grow in numbers, I foresee even greater benefits in the future. From the initiative of growing our leadership to Big Art Day to the birth of the Scholarship Foundation, we are providing our members with opportunities to advocate for Art Education and to gain insight in new art trends. Goals and Objectives for Upcoming Year I will strive to continue my work to the benefit of TAEA members in regards to keeping track of TAEA revenues and expenses. I will continue to report our financial status by submitting monthly reports to the Board and CAL. 12 Annual Report Office: State VASE Director, Linda Fleetwood November 2015 Summary of Activities of the Past Year VASE Report from October 2014‐January 2015: 1. Organization of VASE Policies & Procedures: Compiled, updated, revised the TAEA/VASE Policies & Procedures; composed of 112 pages including all of VASE (e.g. updated job titles and job descriptions, created timelines, State VASE, High School VASE, Jr VASE, and TEAM guidelines and information. 2. Organization of State Directors: Worked with Karri Clark to organize the division of the State Directors jobs and to clarify job descriptions. Made organizational actions to include Jr VASE and TEAM more firmly under the total VASE umbrella. 3. Creation of VASE Budget: Created VASE pay scale for regional and state events, firmed VASE budget line items on the actual VASE budget (to also include Jr VASE and TEAM), established pay scale for VASE state event directors, and revised regional budget sheets for required submission with payment and reimbursement requests from the regions. Gay Selman (from MCC) and I melded the line item numbers and descriptions for a final document. 4. VASE Website Update: Worked with Don Dinnerville to update and re‐organize the VASE website for greater ease of handling. I also had Don add more functionality to the website – putting the Guidelines on the homepage and having the available early, director timelines and files added, other functions to make the job of directing an event smoother. There were quite a few bugs in the VASE site this year related to the use of Chrome and login through the VASE site. These have been corrected. Don does not suggest the programming to take us out of using Cold Fusion. He said this is costly and not necessary as small tweaks when needed are just as effective. 5. Development of Gold Seal Manager: developed job, job description, and pay scale for a Gold Seal Manager who will: a. Meet Gold Seal Foreman on the Saturday of the State VASE Event to pack Gold Seal artwork; b. Load Gold Seal artwork and transport either to the 1st venue or to storage; c. Coordinate 3 extra venues for the showing of the Gold Seal Exhibition other than the 2 standard venues (5 venues in all). These venues are scheduled by the Gold Seal Foreman. The venues will be: 1. ? (right after State VASE, 2. ?, 3. ?, 4. TEA Travis Building, Austin, and 5. TAEA State Conference; d. Transport Gold Seal Exhibition (plus display panels & tables if needed) to the venue, unpack and set up the show for viewing; e. Create and post Gold Seal artwork labels for the exhibition (using the spreadsheet and PowerPoint that the Gold Seal Foreman creates); f. Will maintain correspondence with the Gold Seal Foreman throughout the year; g. Needed and provided by TAEA/VASE: Yearly stipend, Travel expenses: mileage (standard Texas rate), hotel if needed, food if needed, Storage Unit – found and maintained by Gold Seal Manager; paid for by TAEA, Display Panels, Display tables, Drape & Runners for Display tables, Packing Materials, Gold Seal Signs. Contracted was accepted by Duane Sanford. YAM work and storage was also rolled into the contract. 6. Blue Ribbon Board 2015: Scheduled time and place for the Blue Ribbon Board Meeting (according to the guidelines in the VASE Polices & Procedures) – Wednesday and Thursday, July 8 & 9, 2015, at the Richard A. Middleton Education Complex (NEISD central office) in San Antonio. Because the rotation was complete, I proposed a new rotation of BRB members to invite to participate; this to be voted on by the TAEA Executive Board during the January meeting. VASE Jurors & Juror Training Re‐certification: VASE Juror Training Course site stable this year. I haven’t had to troubleshoot as many issues with jurors not being able to get in or have their certification noted. Still needs to be moved, but waiting ‘til VASE season is over. Don set up several new systems for directors in the certified juror site: 1. A place for directors to input whether there was a problem with a juror, 2. A system to notify jurors easily, 3. A rotation of reminders to renew certification, starting with our oldest jurors in the system (requirement is to re‐certify every 3 years, but this first rotation were with jurors who had certified 5+ years ago). Other small tweaks were made to the juror list functionality. VASE Report from November 2014‐March 2015: 8. VASE Website Update: Worked with Don Dinnerville to institute many new functions in the VASE website to make it more usable by teachers, directors and State VASE personnel. The fine tuning was also applied to Jr VASE and TEAM where applicable. 9. Blue Ribbon Board 2015: The time and place for the Blue Ribbon Board Meeting (according to the guidelines in the VASE Polices & Procedures) is Wednesday and Thursday, July 8 & 9, 2015, at the Richard A. Middleton Education Complex (NEISD central office) in San Antonio. A new rotation of Blue Ribbon Board members – focusing on obtaining membership from all over the state – was nominated, accepted and contacted. The separate list has the names of the new Blue Ribbon Board members. 10. High School VASE Events: Statewide, there were 28,760 registered entries – approximately 1,800 more than last year. There were 27 regional events scheduled this year. With the addition of the Region 5 event on February 14, all state ESC regions now participate in VASE. This was made possible through the efforts of Jennifer Thompson – a teacher for Pasadena ISD – who had the vision to direct the event and who recruited a host and host school and directed a very successful event of 35 entries. Students and teachers who participated were very excited and are already looking forward to next year. Another first this year was the cancellation of 6 events scheduled for February 28 due to icy weather conditions in Regions 10E, 10S (Dallas), 16 (Amarillo), 9 (Wichita Falls), 15 (San Angelo), and 18 (Odessa). 4 of the regional directors worked extra hard and totally rescheduled their events for one week later on March 7. 2 of these 4 actually had to use a new school. 3 rescheduled events remain for this weekend, March 21. At this point there are 1,663 artworks advancing to state, with a predicted (according to size of the region) addition of 133 more qualifiers this Saturday. This will make an approximate total of 1,796 state entries. 11. VASE Pay‐Scale: Difficulties with 2 regions refusing to work within the pay‐scale set by the TAEA Board. 2 other regions had minor issues with this but chose to voluntarily take out their small overages from their own honorariums. The issue stems from regions having complete autonomy for so long even when there has always been a suggested pay‐scale. Part of the problem is also that they are not running the event in an efficient manner and have employed many extra chief workers. One help will be the further division of Region 4 into 4 regions. This will put all Region 4 regions between 1400 and 1700 artworks – more like the rest of the larger regions in the state. Discussion here with the March Board. State VASE Plans: Karri Clark has done an excellent job of pulling together an excellent workforce for State VASE and has brought some excellent organization to the event. Set‐up, AV, food, and decorating (pipe and drape) have all been ordered. Our hotel block is full, but some rooms are cancelled periodically and are immediately picked up by waiting schools. Ginger, Mackenzie and Erin Doyle attending to accept Joey’s Spirit of VASE Award. Mackenzie and Erin will also be singing a duet for the attendees. The agendas and maps are posted. Vendor information is posted. VASE report from June 2015‐September 2015: 13. VASE Honorarium Pay‐scale and the VASE Policies and Procedures approved by the TAEA Executive Board at the June 12‐13 meeting. 14. VASE Blue Ribbon Board met on July 8‐9, 2015, at the NEISD central office in San Antonio. All aspects of VASE were discussed. Rules were revised especially in regard to clarification and emphasis of originality rule, items to be attached to the back of artwork and addition of “variety” to various media. The Board accepted the VASE Honorarium Pay‐scale as presented. A new procedure for payment of VASE fees was discussed. Summary of my action steps follow in preparation for the launch of VASE after the fall conference in November: o Creation of website/eBlast reminder to remind teachers to pick up Gold Seal artwork o Workshops for State VASE event to have application online similar to conference o Revise the system and procedures for making fee payments for all VASE events. Payments will now go directly to the Dallas office with checks made to TAEA. Jody and Gay will mark the revised Regional Invoice which now has a section for whether the teacher has paid, the amount of the payment, and the date it was paid. Regional directors can check status on this form. Invoices are revised to show new payment method. Also, Pay‐Pal for VASE has been implemented on the VASE account so that teachers and other officials may pay VASE fees online. o The classification “variety” has been added to the drawing, painting, and printmaking media. o A checklist is being created by Laura Grundler that area judges will take with them to the area judging to help remind jurors to: consider all sizes of artwork, consider expressive artworks, not just photorealism, originality, consider monochromatic as well as full color, etc. o Created a “reminder” when teacher submits a digital art & media artwork or a digital photograph that the digital form must be printed. o Created a function that allows directors to send out several “reminder” emails if the VASE fees have not been paid. o An additional line was added on the Student Intent Form for the back of the artwork. A question about the source of the imagery was added as a part of the body of the writing rather than just a check box and blank at the top. o All artworks now must have sources attached to the back and the wording “Production/Reflection Notes” and “Sketches” were added to a check box at the top of the Student Intent Form. o The State Teacher Checklist was changed to encompass more and also is fillable online and then available for the directors. It includes the rules for all 3 programs plus a mission/visions statement, history and background, organizational chart, Blue Ribbon description and guidelines, timelines for all 3 programs including State VASE, job descriptions, checklists, all juror guides and documents, and all VASE forms. A VASE pay‐scale was developed for all 3 programs and was placed into effect by the TAEA Executive Board. A budget for all of VASE was created and implemented for the first time. We held a successful director training session at the TAEA fall conference and all 3 programs were addressed in the training. Region 5 had a VASE event for the very first time. Now all 20 ESC service regions have VASE ‐ the entire state is covered! We welcomed a new position in the High School State Event Director and this was a very good division of labor. The position was filled by Karri Clark of Klein ISD. We welcomed another new position in the Gold Seal Manager and he has been a blessing storing and moving the Gold Seal Show. The Manager is Duane Sanford and with the help of Mary Hierholzer who is the Gold Seal Chair they have implemented a yearly schedule for the show and Duane travels with it and installs it. He also works the entire State VASE event and alleviates much of the heavy setting up and hanging of the show. We successfully held the State VASE event at a hotel/convention center in spite of the financial burden and difficulties. The teachers and students loved it and the new tours as a workshop was a success. We awarded the first Spirit of VASE Award to Joseph F. Doyle III and it was accepted by Joey's wife Ginger and her 2 daughters Mackensey and Erin. Program Challenge: Losing Joey Doyle was the biggest challenge coupled with becoming director at a late time that made it difficult to implement some order. Some of the things that were our biggest successes were also our biggest challenges. A few directors balked at job descriptions and a pay‐scale that took away their unlimited autonomy to make their own decisions on how things were run and how much was paid. The size of VASE necessitates common guidelines and pay. It had become a complaint point among VASE workers on how much some regions paid for things. This was a difficult implementation. Another giant challenge was having State VASE at a hotel/convention center. The costs just seemed to keep growing and then the hotel cancelled one month out from the event. The logistics of doing State VASE at this scale was very difficult. The space difficulty also caused a problem with reducing the number of workshops available. Lastly, the transition from one person doing all of the work of running VASE to several people managing VASE took adjustment. Communication was key and this can be hard at time. Changes for Next Year: For VASE 2016, we will split region 4 into 4 regions instead of 3. This will mean the splitting of Cy‐Fair ISD into 2 different regions. New directors will be chosen for Regions 4E, 4N, 4S and 11N due to resignations and the creation of a new region. We will revise the VASE pay‐scale again paying more attention to the needs of smaller regions. The TAEA Executive Board will establish this. State VASE will again be a high school ‐ April 22‐ 23, 2016, in San Antonio at North East ISD's John Madison High School. We are also considering having the participating teachers be the workshop facilitators and will work out a system for this. Just like this year, all workshop presenters will supply their own materials and VASE will reimburse them $2 per attendee just like it is done for conference. The last consideration for next year will be the scholarships given at State VASE. This is the largest expenditure, and it may need to be re‐structured. The following are just a few of the activities: Hotel selection and negotiations for events and conferences such as Blue Ribbon Board, Dallas & Austin Conferences, state VASE to name a few. Work with Helms Brisco for hotel selection with a great deal of focus on details. CEDFA Board activities and my selection of presenters for Visual Arts as well as planning/ preparation for the Summer Summit XVI. It was a big success and art had the largest participation. Our CEDFA Board met in Austin in September to begin discussion/planning for the 2016’s Summit. Our plans are to keep the same presenters for another year. Work with the TAEA President and the Board of Directors to facilitate their work and to keep a continuous positive line of communication going at all times. Communication/work with the NAEA board members because Texas is a big contributor to the power base of our national association. Texans are on the NAEA Board and we also provide program models for them to replicate. We do not have a dues agreement with NAEA, but we do have a close working relationship with them. I work hard to keep this positive position with the governing board of NAEA. I monitor TAEA programs as well as conference work….keeping concepts strong, keep the focus on details and work with TAEA headquarters for clear and on‐going communication. I assist VASE with hotel arrangement and negotiations as well as advisory. Publications….I work with the TRENDS editors to produce a quality journal each year. The STAR is returning in a different format in January and in November the STAR will be the annual conference edition. We have continued to keep membership connected through our Facebook group, which has grown to include over 230 members so far! We are hoping to reach even more members in the year to come as this has proven to be a great way to stay connected with TAEA and art education related events and information. We have also seen relationships facilitated through this avenue, which has been wonderful to see our membership interacting with each other. This year, thanks to newly elected Division Chair Elect; Tracy Evans, we also expanded our social media reach to include Twitter and Instagram. There is now a handle for each platform for the division team to use. Search @TXEart on each platform to follow along. TXEart stands for Texas Elemenary Art! In addition you can use the hashtag #taeaelem in posts as well as see what others have posted. The Elementary Division as a whole came out in full force to help with VASE this year as jurors, Juror Foreman, and various other roles! We feel it is important to support this program as we hope our students will participate as they progress in the art programs statewide! In the year to come we are looking forward to building communication and our digital PLN within our membership! We want our members to feel like the division team is accessible and part of their network! We plan to do this by stressing the use of our social media connections as our state is so large geographically that this provides a way to be in each other’s “daily lives.” We look forward to also welcome Tracy Evans from Plano ISD to the Elementary Division Team at the end of the conference November 2015. Miller November 2015 Summary of Activities of the Past Year The Middle School/Junior High Division of the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) has enjoyed a productive year. From the incredibly well attended Division meeting at conference last November 2014 to posts on our TAEA Middle School Facebook page we have continued our goal of reaching out to the Middle School/Junior High members of TAEA with our yearly theme of “You Can’t Scare Me, I Teach Middle School Art”. This theme which uses humor and art history in the Middle School Class Room served as a focus for our “Traveling Sketchbook” which is currently making it way across the state of Texas from teacher to teacher. It also made an appearance on our Facebook page with various posts highlighting best practices by TAEA teachers. As the 2015 TAEA Conference rapidly approaches, our thoughts return to the 2014 TAEA Conference Division Meeting and the incredible turnout we had with last year’s theme of “Traveling the World with Middle School Art”. Miller November 2015 Goals and Objectives for Upcoming Year As we move forward into the coming year, I am excited to begin my new role as Middle School Chair. We are planning to focus on the use of technology in the Middle School Art room and use it as our theme this year. As technology continues to develop and grow in our home and school environment, it is important to implement lessons using these technologies to create engaging and challenging lessons for our students. We are planning to encourage the membership to share lesson ideas and uses of new technologies via our Facebook page, and I am hoping to create a webpage for the Middle School Division as well where we can post these ideas for the membership to access. I believe this theme will be especially applicable since the use of technology is something that many of our students have had access to their entire lives, and with more districts implementing BYOD (bring your own device) policies, it would be foolish for us to ignore this resource. I also believe that the use of technology can afford us the ability to create highly engaging lessons that might not be as available using traditional media. My co‐chair, Joelle Dulaney, is extremely well versed in the use of technology in the classroom, and she will be a great resource as we develop these new ideas. We will also be working with our local organization, the Brazos Valley Art Education Association, to initiate and implement ideas and programs to benefit teachers in our local community and the state at large through YAM, Big Art Day, and both Junior and Senior VASE (I will be the Region VI Junior VASE Site Director again this year). This group is open to anyone! Join us! 2. TRENDS Several Higher Ed members have been actively involved with the administration and production of the journal Trends. Dr. Carrie Markello (editor) and Dr. Heidi Powell and Dr. Bill Nieberding (co‐editors) have completed the 2015 issue of Trends, which will be available at the fall conference. The 2016 Trends co‐editors are Dr. Heidi Powell and Dr. Bill Neiderbring. 3. Division sketchbook Division members have been encouraged to submit a page for the higher ed division sketchbook/journal. Sherry Snowden is coordinating this through electronic submissions. Goals and Objectives for Upcoming Year Future Activities 1. Planning for Fall 2015 conference As the new school year kicks off, our division is planning for an exciting fall conference in Galveston. We have several research focused sessions planned. You’ll hear about cutting edge research by top art educators in our field—in a pecha kucha format. This is guaranteed to be fun and fast paced. Dr. Christina Bain will be leading the Graduate Student Research forum, where graduate students get a chance to show how research and practical issues intersect. Dr. Melinda Mayer will facilitate a session where faculty members from several universities will talk about their graduate programs in art education. 2. Plans for Summer 2016 higher ed summit Our division is planning to organize higher ed summits every other summer. We are starting to organize one for summer 2016 in the central Texas area. 30 Annual Report Office: Supervision/Administration Division elect, Dr. Sharon Chumley November 2015 Summary of Activities of the Past Year A quick summary of activities from the position of chair‐elect during the past year, November 2014, to the present, November 2015, may be summed up in the word observation; observation as in watching, seeing and learning. It has been stated that learning to draw is merely a matter of learning to see correctly. And though, the purpose of last year was not one of learning to draw, it was a purpose of learning how to see correctly the duties and responsibilities of the position of the Chairperson – Division of Supervision/Administration. It was a privilege to learn from a master and pro such as Karri Clark, who served in this position for the past 2 years and guided our division through a myriad of successful events. As the incoming chair for the years 2015‐2016 and 2016‐2017, I plan to review the established goals and planned initiatives that are currently set in place for the Division. Then with that knowledge, I will continue to implement those initiatives aligned with the goals as a part of the targeted objectives for the upcoming year. Also, as we are such a dynamic state organization with so much excellent leadership in this particular division, it will be mandatory and very exciting to do conceptual planning involving such topics as e‐books, virtual learning, on‐line trainings, and installations in our exhibits and art shows. With the TEKS revision now in place, curriculum is big and the opportunities to add rigor to what we teach is something worth discussing and researching. It will also be of interest to reach out to the many regions and widen the circle from our central areas. This can be done with such items as videos, chats, and shared experiences. I am excited about moving into this position and I am hopeful of serving well in this office. They also chime in on issues to give their view of things when a discussion catches their eye to bring more depth to the community's conversation.) ‐Educating the public (and teachers/art teachers) about community based art education. Educating CBAE about each other and that they are not alone. Define‐ art programs outside of public, private, and museum education, such as after school programs, community centers, homeless shelters, retirement homes, prisons, etc. *(I have found that many people in our community overlook most ALL of these vital programs in our community, except high profile ones like Pinot's Pallet, and Painting with a Twist, and some recreation centers with well established long running art programs. They do not even know when/if their schools use local vendors or CBAE artists to enhance their students' learning days.) *** This underscores that We/Art Teachers and CBAE teachers need to actively/aggressively advertise and TELL students’ parents (and our principals) about all the extra mileage we have put into their students' public education by providing/coordinating extra arts enrichment to underscore the value of public school education. By doing this, we can keep up our head counts in our schools high so we do not lose students (that reduces our funding) to local Charter schools that do not provide outstanding fine arts education, and ultimately cause public schools to shuffle or let go of new highly educated art educators with fresh ideas and tech skills. Once they leave, they may not come back to teaching once shuffled too many times. Connect with established programs as your mentors, pay it forward and be mentor to others, etc). ‐How to use resources to build a stronger CBAE program in your school/community by creating a clear vision and plotting your course of action with a master plan for year 1,3, and 5+). ‐How to use the above information to apply and get grants, and make community connections with art and community leagues/guilds, and businesses to fund your program year to year. **Consistent funding was a big concern for new/potential CBAE members. ‐The Importance of getting your company/nonprofit/organizations name and logo printed/published on as many events/media sites as possible for proof of collaborations and presentations to gain notoriety and social media clout for higher chance of continued funding or finding long term endorsements via collaborating with larger companies and foundations. ‐Grant writing and resources: collecting info on grants and resources to present at TAEA for members who have made the trek and purchased admission (the old carrot trick!) Community Art Division Meeting. ‐Data base‐ collecting and gaining insight on how to use info of existing art centers, artist communities, local and state wide reach out for CBAE membership and links to national resources/organizations, Art Leagues, Guilds, etc, to support, promote, collaborate with to help build CBAE programs and find gage interest in each community (Using data collected to see where to focus time and energy first; I want to know is it worth pushing in this city/area now, or later.) By looking at the data, I have found that many smaller towns, and growing cities are pushing to reinvigorate their local economy by creating, (or have an agenda to build) Artisan Squares or "Arts Districts" across Texas to renovate and uplift lower socioeconomic areas. ***These areas are potential hot spots ready to support the CBAE, local artists, and the expansion of school arts programs with the right guidance, and insight on how investing in public art education and CBAE the city builds multigenerational internal community interest & support as appreciative consumers of the arts provided by the Arts Districts so they are not only dependent on tourism*** The newly awarded $30 million federal grant to Georgia, might be something to watch for CBAE and TAEA to see how much is used on arts projects to invigorate their state. ‐Attended Houston Arts Partners Conference to gain insight on how Houston area community based art education programs found success, and where they are needing/wanting help with to streamline their programs. They are extremely interested in TAEA CBAE for a community to join other CBAE members and for high quality CBAE professional development. (After the keynote speaker: John Abodeely, Deputy Director of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities presentation, everyone I talked to from principals to classroom teachers, they were all interested in joining TAEA for access to high quality art/arts integration professional development.) ***Through these discussions, they want to know if the possibility of a TAEA created ARTS Integration Series can be created so a campus art teacher, one grade level classroom teacher from each grade and the Afterschool program coordinator/provider from a school can go together through the series to help give them the guidance and opportunity to build camaraderie while becoming more comfortable collaborating together on lesson planning/Unit Building...I feel maybe these could be great for art programs struggling to get administrative support on campus, and to reach into more rural districts to expand our reach of TAEA in general). Due to the nature of our current film contracts, time use on set (the Director, Director of Photography (and often the producers/clients) are next to me at all times watching my monitors), the strange hours of filming/transcoding, and travel, (no internet/ phone signal zones in areas of rural New Mexico and Texas) my correspondences may come in bursts, and silences. I apologize in advance. I do have the week of conference blacked out without filming, or camera preps, so I can attend all TAEA Meetings and host the CBAE Division Meeting. I have been honored to be a part of TAEA, and will continue to do so as long as I can. I may have to step down from Chair early if our film demand keeps the pace it has taken as of late. I have already identified several potential CBAE chairs to take the lead in the event that I must leave early. Secured the Executive Board's approval for the waiving of student registration fee to state conference altogether. Items on the agenda were: Discussion ‐ ways to implement the Fellows Scholarship in honor of TAEA Fellows who have passed. Followed up discussion with Elizabeth Battle regarding her wishes for the funds that were collected in honor of Dale Battle. Passed those onto the Executive Board for action. Presentation by Mel Basham on the TAEA Sketchbook Initiative for the 2015 Conference in Galveston. Voted unanimously to participate in the Sketchbook Initiative. Presentation of the 2015 Distinguished Fellow Nominations. Names of nominees were taken from the floor. Three names were considered for nomination and to be sent applications for 2015. Discussion on communication and ways to stay in contact with Fellows during the year. Passed around the list of members. Those present signed up to contact 2‐3 members each on a regular basis. We held a FREE conference for the teachers of Region 6. The conference was held on the campus of Blinn College in Brenham in June. There was 60 participants and presenters in attendance including teachers from other regions. A representative with Asel Art manned a booth with art supplies for the teachers to purchase if they wished. The only cost to teachers was for their lunch. The enthusiasm was high and the question was asked if we were going to do it again next year (2016). Plans are already in progress to offer another free conference in June 2016. State VASE took place at the Dallas Convention Center in April. The second annual region 10 mini‐conference took place at Richardson High School on Friday, June 26th. Deborah Moore from AP Strategies gave the keynote address about artful thinking and vertical team planning to build successful AP studio art programs. Several art teachers shared successful lessons, demonstrations, and best practices for their peers. Asel Art Supply was a vendor and provided raffle prizes for participants. During this time, I attended the TAEA Conference and held the Region 11 Meeting. Two other regions met with us too. Our planning meetings allowed us to get to know each other as a group. We did activities that addressed the needs of the region and answered questions. The Regional Conference themed on the new TEKS was scheduled for the second week of June but due to being put on bed rest the conference was cancelled. I have created emails to send to our current Region 11 members to send to their colleagues inviting them to become members, and I made one encouraging new members to attend conference. I also made a TAEA Region 11 Facebook group to communicate with membership. Goals and Objectives for Upcoming Year I will not be holding this position next year. We had to increase the number of judges, but we paid them for ½ day. This worked much better than a full‐day event. VTS Training VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) training was conducted at the Region 16 Education Service Center for elementary teachers in the Texas Panhandle. An overview of VTS was provided for Art Teachers in Amarillo ISD. Art Curriculum in Amarillo ISD Underwent rewrites that focused on revised TEKS and project‐based learning. One of the goals is to attach common lesson plans to the curriculum objectives. Increase surrounding area art teacher’s awareness of Brazos Valley Art Education Association. 5. Appoint a Big Art Day Committee Chairperson to guide the group during the year for the month of March. Objectives 1. During the September BVAEA Meeting, we will hand‐out and/or email the permission slips for student artwork to be featured on our web page. 2. During the September Meeting, present the BVAEA Perfect Attendance Awards. 3. Increase awareness of TASB/TASA and the Capitol Exhibit by discussing what each is and artwork deadlines. 4. Email and send the BVAEA tri‐fold brochure and letter that promotes BVAEA, YAM, plus, awards our association and teachers have won. These will be sent to teachers in the surrounding areas along with the Important Dates and Deadlines document. 5. Amber Herbelin will be the Big Art Day Committee Chairperson. She will present the bottle cap project to the group at the September Meeting. 55 Annual Report Office: Richardson Art Teacher Society, Jordan Taub November 2015 Summary of Activities of the Past Year Richardson Art Teacher Society (R.A.T.S.) has held various events for members this past year. Best of TAEA After TAEA, RATS members shared out their favorite lessons from TAEA. Teachers exchanged lessons, shared art examples, and came away with more ideas to engage students through meaningful lessons and classroom management strategies. Lesson Plan and Poster Swap RATS members participated in a lesson plan swap hosted by Kate Shatz, This was an all‐level event, and members brought strong, successful lessons to share with others. Posters were also shared to enhance our collection visual learning aides. Encaustic Workshop Laura Lester, RATS Secretary, organized a hands on workshop for RATS members. They were then able to take their experience and share that with their students. RATS Kay Savay Scholarship Anne Gallo, RATS Scholarship Chair, is currently establishing, organizing, and facilitating the Kay Savay scholarship for deserving High School Seniors in Richardson ISD. RATS are raising money through t‐shirt sales to fund the scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to students later this April/ May. Goals and Objectives for Upcoming Year Goals for the 2015‐2016 school year: Going Digital! Our goal this year is to create and send out our RATS News Letter and use it as a tool to record events and communicate with our members. PAL and RATS Goal: to collaborate with other Art Teacher organizations in our region, starting with the Plano Art Leaders in possible workshops, professional development opportunities, and art shows. Last October we participated in the Holiday Bazar, which was a huge success. The teachers put on 4 different YAM for the schools. The 4 different YAM is due the size and the work would not fit in one place. This is such a huge time. In June we held a 3 day professional development for the teacher and work created from this show led to an Art Teachers show. Carrie Markello , Heidi Powell and William Nieberding The co-editors of Trends, Drs. Carrie Markello , Heidi Powell and William Nieberding compiled the 2015 issue of the journal Trends. Collaborating again this year with designer/art educator Erica Ciesielski Chaikin, the journal focuses on: Exploring Relevant Art Experiences for 21st Century Learners. This issue includes six peer-reviewed articles from practitioners in the field of art education, interviews with three artists, an e-mail conversation with Olivia Gude, and a section featuring Big Art Day events across the state of Texas. The six peer reviewed articles explore a wide range of ideas and challenges for cultivating relevant art experiences and preparing 21st century learners to see and relate to the world we share. This year 's issue includes interviews with internationally recognized artists Mel Chin, and Dario Robleto , and an interview with Austin ai1ist John Yancey. An email conversation between Oliva Gude and Carrie Markello covers developing art education relevant for 21st century learners. This interview is a follow up to Gude's General Session talk and workshop conference presentations at the 2014 TAEA conference in San Antonio. The conversation with Gude, a highly recognized leader in the field, continues the practice of extending the scope of the journal to a national level. Written and photographic accounts of Big Art Day events are featured in this issue as well, and highlight the creative forces at work in the field of art education across the state of Texas. Copies of the 2015 issue of Trends will be distributed at the TAEA conference in Galveston in (November 2015). Past issues of Trends are available in a digital format through the Trends webpage on the TAEA website supported by Dr. Jack Davis. The link from the Trends webpage links to The Portal to Texas History where past issues from l 957 to the present may be accessed . Developed with input and inspiration from attendees of the 2014 Higher Education Summit hosted by Texas State University, the 2016 call for manuscripts "SITUATED " along with author guidelines have been published to the TAEA website to the National Art Education Association website. Goals and Objectives for Upcoming Year After serving for three years, Dr. Carrie Markello will conclude her service as a Trends co‐editor at the end of 2015. Co‐Editors Dr. Heidi Powell from University of Texas and Dr. William Nieberding from Stephen F. Austin State University will be seeking a third scholar for editing the 2016 issue. The co‐editors also plan to draft and submit for approval the 2017 call for manuscripts before the 2015 TAEA conference in Galveston. As we develop purposefully and responsively as art/ist educators, the narratives we build are important in developing the very sense of who we are, as well as what, and why we do what we do. These narratives impact how we view each other and ourselves in the spaces of art education. Art Education is the place where we all find ourselves immersed. In this call, we emphasize how context can change our views and interpretations of situations, how we are situated, and the process of situating ourselves within our profession. How do we as art educators respond to and initiate change? How do we create new adaptations for our programs when situations arise to challenge us, such as limitations of funding, our physical environments, policy mandates, or assessment practices? In what ways does experience and research shape Art Education and create new possibilities? How do shared experiences foster hope and improve pedagogy and practice in others, as well as for ourselves? This issue of Trends encourages article submissions that reflect how we become responsively creative to our situations and our approaches to Art Education and invites those who are art educators, community‐based activists, museum educators, university educators, researchers, and graduate students for the 2016 theme: Situate, Situation, Situating: Art Education. Authors are encouraged to explore issues of classroom practice, research, policy‐making administration and community engagement that reflect the diversity of situation within which you are engaging in art education.
