Microsoft Excel
Students will learn how to get around in Excel
without being intimidated by the program.
Some of the things that will be taught will be
setting up a workbook, setting up formulas, sorting,
filtering, charts, using Excel in other programs, and
printing.
Excel is a computer program that is often preferred or required when employers are looking for
new personnel.
If you are looking to re-enter the working world,
this would be an excellent class for you to take so
that you will have a working knowledge of Excel.
Knitting: Beginning to Intermediate
Have you ever seen someone knitting and
wished you knew how to do that? Have you
seen a beautiful scarf or sweater and wished
you could create something similar? Then this
class is for you!
Knitting only involves two basic stitches,
and over the course of three weeks, students will
learn how to perform each of these stitches and
how to combine them into a more sophisticated
project. Students will learn how to create a pot
holder, bookmark, and a scarf.
Students will also learn how to read patterns
and find further instruction online, so that they
can build on the skills they learn in class to create whatever you can imagine.
Materials will be provided and are included
in the cost of the class, except for the yarn necessary to make the final project. Yarn for the first
two projects will be provided. Information on
choosing and purchasing yarn will be discussed
in class.
Pistol Course
Spanish for Educators I *
This class is designed to introduce basic conversational Spanish to educators. It will be packed
full of “survival Spanish” for the school setting.
Pronunciation and grammar will be emphasized, and a variety of group activities will be used
to facilitate learning. The final class meeting, the
group will dine at a local Mexican restaurant and
be required to order their meal in Spanish.
* Spanish for Educators II will be offered in
the Spring 2017 schedule, so taking this course
and then taking Spanish for Educators II in the
spring will provide a total of 5.0 CEUs.
This is a course designed to provide basic
handgun training to students. It will focus onthe
knowledge, skills, and attitude required for
basic handgun competency. Specific topics will
include gun safety, handling the gun, cleaning,
storage, ammunition, marksmanship, responsibilities, carry options, and the laws concerning
handguns.
This course includes “live” shooting at a local range. Students may bring their own firearm
and ammunition. However, if needed, a firearm
will be available upon request.
Students will receive all course materials and
a Mississippi Certified Firearms Training Program
certificate upon completion of the class.
* There are two sessions available

Effective Lesson Planning
This class is designed to help teachers develop
effective lesson plans. A lesson plan is an instructor’s road map for teaching the concepts that
students need to learn.
Lesson planning can sometimes be a very
daunting task that becomes routine and nothing
more than a checklist of activities.
This class will not only examine the components
of an effective lesson plan but will explore ways to
make those plans more effective and exciting for
both the teacher and their students.
Teachers and students benefit from thoughtful
lesson planning, and this class will help teachers
enrich and refine the development of their lesson
plans.
Microsoft Word
Students will learn how to use many of the
functions in Microsoft Word.
Some of the things that will be taught will be
changing appearance, mail merge, working with
charts, tables, columns and graphics, editing and
proofreading and using templates from Microsoft’s
website.
You can create labels, flyers, newsletters and
more. With the use of templates you can simply
create projects that will be useful for the classroom
and any other areas of your professional or personal life.
The ABCs of Landscape Plants:
Introduction to Plant Materials
Azaleas, Boxwoods, Camellias ~ The ABCs
of Landscape Plants
This class will cover the identification, growth
habits, maintenance, and pest solutions of the most
commonly found landscape material in the MidSouth. We will cover plant identification techniques
that will help students learn to “key” the names of
plants.
Students are encouraged to bring in samples of
plants and ask questions about plant selections that
are found around their yard.
We will conclude the class with a special Saturday morning session to be held at the Baddour
Garden Center in Senatobia.
Essentials for Your
Personal Computer
This class is geared toward those who want
more information about managing their own
computers using Windows’ latest operating system,
how to personalize and configure Windows 7 and
how to install and remove programs.
Other topics include protecting a PC with
Windows Security Center, setting up passwords for
multiple users, saving important information onto
CDs, creating back-ups, using an external hard
drive and troubleshooting.

Welding 101
Do you want to learn a new skill that will have
both practical uses and allow you to make beautiful
works of art? If so, Welding 101 would be the
perfect class for you!
In this class students will learn the five basic
joints of welding so that they can have experience
enough to fix anything metal around the house that
has been broken. Students will learn how to weld
with a MIG welder and how to use an oxyacetylene torch to cut and mold metal.
The class will be making a table base and
a flower that students can take home with them
or give as a gift to someone special. The class
promises to be full of fun, and students will acquire
a lifelong skill that no one can take away.
Warm Glass for Cool People
In this four-week class, students will learn to
design and make unique fused glass creations,
from the basics of scoring and stacking, to slumping glass into bowls, dishes, dichroic jewelry,
Christmas ornaments and much more.
This year we will also work with crushed glass
to create a frit painting, as well as use some great
new jewelry molds to make matching earring and
pendant sets.
Whether students are new to glass fusing or
have attended a class before, this class will be
a great opportunity to make creative gifts for the
holidays.
Natural Responses in
Mixed Media
Join mixed media artist Dana Finimore for
creative fun as you explore your response to time
spent in the outdoors.
This exciting course addresses creative ways
of depicting nature by utilizing a more expressive
approach. Students will begin making art based
on their individual responses to the natural environment. The first class session will include time spent
outdoors, so students should wear comfortable
clothing and shoes.
Working from a variety of materials and
techniques such as studio demonstrations, discussions, and an on-site exploration, students will learn
to become more responsive in their own process
by learning to listen to their creative intuition. This
class looks at nature and landscape from a more
responsive point of view, versus laboring over
an ultra-realistic rendering of the subject. Various
approaches students may take include unique combinations of collage, drawing, painting, and mixed
media. There will also be discussion on structuring
of composition, how color can affect meaning, and
abstract expressionism.
Open to all skill levels. All materials and supplies are provided. Students may wish to bring
extra paper, brushes, or their own favorite art supplies.
Advanced Microsoft Excel
Students must have basic computer skills and
basic Excel skills to attend this class.
It is suggested that students take Excel prior to
taking this class.
Advanced Microsoft Excel will be covering pivot
tables, advanced formulas, working with other applications, password protection and more.

READING ROUNDTABLE
Reading Roundtable provides a forum to read and discuss a variety of books during the course of a semester.
Fall is a great time to dedicate yourself to a new hobby or dabble in the arts. How about combining these
ideas into a semester-long hobby of reading and the art of great discussion?
This fall half the discussions will be led by veteran leaders and the other half by new leaders to the group.
Discussion leaders include Maggie Moran, Maya Berry, Dr. Melissa Wright, and Jane Billingsley.
Come join us the last Tuesday of each month at 2 p.m. in the back of the RC Pugh Library on the Senatobia
campus.
Funds supporting this program are donated by Senatobia’s premier institution, Sycamore Bank. Books are $5
each thanks to continued support from Sycamore Bank.

Class Dates & Descriptions
Thirty-nine year old widower, A.J. Fikry, is an
unlikely romantic hero: he’s cranky, he drinks too much,
his bookstore is failing and don’t get him started on the
state of publishing.
He’s also at the center of Gabrielle Zevin’s new
novel, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. Zevin’s book
is a love letter to the joys of reading.
Each chapter begins with the title of a short
story or a book and a note from Fikry describing what
he likes about it, essentially introducing each character
by what they read.
Maya Berry, digital librarian, is excited
to bring such a homage to the reading of words and
how they can change us.

Be in the know by reading Dispatches from
Pluto by Richard Grant.
Maggie Moran, director, Learning
Resources, will lead this popular local book.
Library Journal states, “While visiting the
Mississippi Delta, Grant fell in love with a beautiful
plantation-style house with lower monthly payments
than the Manhattan apartment he and his girlfriend,
Mariah, rented. So begins their life in Pluto, a world of
its own.
Soon they battle fire ants and cottonmouths
in the garden, shoot deer for food, and get used to
driving over 50 miles to the nearest Walmart. The
locals take them under their wing and help them
acclimate to a region filled with a confusing racial
etiquette, along with the alligators in the backyard and
armadillos digging up the front yard. As time goes by,
they become enthralled with the community and its
generous people.”

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
tells the story of a curmudgeon named Ove. He is said
to have staunch principals, strict routines, and a short
fuse. Booklist adds, “Behind the cranky exterior there
is a story and a sadness. So when one November
morning a chatty young couple with two chatty
young daughters move in next door and accidentally
flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical
and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected
friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a
U-Haul.” Reading Roundtable member, Jane
Billingsley, will lead this heartwarming and hilarious
novel.

Charms for the Easy Life by Kaye
Gibbons is the story of the Birches, a family without
men who live gloriously offbeat lives in the lush, green
backwoods of North Carolina.
Radiant, headstrong Sophia and her shy,
brilliant daughter, Margaret, possess powerful charms
to ward off loneliness, despair, and the human misery
that often beats a path to their door. And they are
protected by the eccentric wisdom and muscular
love of the remarkable matriarch, Charlie Kate, a
solid uncompromising self-taught healer who treats
everything from boils to broken bones to broken hearts.
Dr. Melissa Wright, public service librarian,
has been waiting two semesters to share this strong and
discussable book.

the easiest time to shop.
