Seeds and supplies will be provided. Those who participate will have the opportunity to take home the vegetables they helped grow. When: Saturday, May 3rd 10am – Noon Vegetables for Beginners Course / Orientation Brown County UW-Extension 1150 Bellevue St. Once the initial planting is done matches will be encouraged to tend to the plot when they are available and we’ll also schedule some dates to work on the garden as a group. Our plot is at 1028 N. Maple Ave. The First Tee Golf Outing The First Tee of Northeastern Wisconsin has invited matches to participate in an evening of golf instruction and play. The evening includes learning golf skills such as putting, chipping, full swings and playing a few holes. The First Tee will provide golf clubs if you or your Little do not have them. When: Tuesday, May 13th 5:30-7:00pm Where: Highland Ridge Golf Club Cost: $5/match, due the day of the activity 1 N.E.W Zoo Service Project & Tour Matches are invited to a behind-the-scenes veterinarian tour at the N.E.W Zoo to learn about how they care for the animals. Summer Reading Event Join us at the Brown County Library to get signed up for the summer reading program while enjoying children’s performers, face painting, popcorn, root beer, balloon animals & more! Signing up for the reading program also gives you and your match the opportunity to attend performances held each Wednesday (optional)! Where: Brown County Library - Downtown When: Saturday, June 7th 10:00 -12:00pm Cost: Free Fish For Kids Program Matches will get to fish off the docks at Bay Beach and learn about the fish they catch. Botanical Garden Scavenger Hunt There are many hidden treasures in the garden and each has a special place in nature! Puzzles and clues will have you roaming the gardens in search of these treasures. When: Tuesday, July 22nd 6:00-8:00pm Where: Green Bay Botanical Garden Cost: $7 per match, due the day of activity. Annual Match Picnic Join the Big Brothers Big Sisters staff and other matches at our annual Match Picnic this August! We’ll have food, face painting, a bounce house, games, prizes, sidewalk art and of course, kickball! When: Tuesday, August 19th, 5:30-8:00pm, Registration 5:00-5:30pm Where: Green Isle Park Cost: Free *Only matches may attend Letter from the Executive Director Our agency is cultivating partnerships with local organizations to bring program enriched match activities. Two planned activities per month focus on critical youth development competencies in five focus areas: Recreation - Explore and experience sporting events promoting appropriate sportsmanship Education & Careers - Introduce post-secondary education and career possibilities Arts & Culture - Increase cultural awareness/respect of other cultures, introduce the arts and performance experiences Civic Engagement - Reinforce concept of giving back and volunteerism, foster good citizenship Health & Fitness - Promote exercise and wellness, encourage healthy choices and good nutrition, build self-esteem Planned goals include forming community partnerships to support cultural and recreational activities as related to the five focus areas. Collaborations range from area colleges, fitness centers, local businesses, sporting venues and theatres to community service groups. Included in these events are: fishing for kids at Bay Beach, a tour of our State’s Capitol, an educational tour of Schneider National to learn about careers in freight, a night at the Green Bay Symphony, an Art Garage event, a New Zoo event, NBC26 TV tour and many more great opportunities. These events are free or very low cost to matches. These events offer an amazing combination of learning opportunities and fun. So, please sign-up and help make each event wildly successful. Our ready-to-be-matched waiting list remains near 130 youth who could benefit from a mentor. These enriched activities are very helpful for Bigs who are looking for match events. We continue needing your help referring and/or recruiting more Bigs as part of our effort to Start Something Big - one child at a time. I believe there is nothing that benefits me more than to help another. So, please share how rewarding it is to serve as a Big Brother, Big Sister or a Big Couple and promote it to your friends, co-workers, family members and other acquaintances. Todd McPeek, Executive Director Appreciation Banquet Cellcom Green Bay Marathon May 17 & 18, 2014 This is our second year as a charity partner for the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon along with Unity Hospice and new partner, Golden House. Thanks to supporters and volunteers, each charity organization received $31,000 from funds raised last year! We appreciate all who volunteered and supported us, and ask you do so again this year! Volunteers will be needed for the Beverage Tent, Food Tent and Course & Coning Setup. Volunteers: You can go to www.cellcomgreenbaymarathon.com to sign up and be sure to select Big Brothers Big Sisters to direct your donations and assignments to us. Our Annual Appreciation Dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29th, at the Rock Garden Conference Center. Social hour begins at 5:00 with dinner, entertainment and awards to follow. Matches will be able to have their photos taken for a package cost of $13. The Annual Appreciation Dinner honors the time and effort that Bigs and Littles put into making a successful match as well as honoring our contributors, Board and committee members, and community partners whose support is so important to the success of our program. Plan on attending to see who will be recognized as this year’s “Community-Based and Site-Based Matches of the Year”, “Board Member of the Year”, “Partnership of the Year”, and other Recognition Awards. Because we don’t live in the Green Bay area Youth’s Name: Colin or around a large town we have had to be innovative when we get together. Colin definitely enjoys fishing, as I do, so How long have you been matched? What do you like about being matched? Colin and I have been matched for that is something we try to do often. Other activities ranged from rock hounding, geo catching, snow shoeing, baking a year. Our relationship over the past year has grown cookies to learning to play cards. Activities are only limited slowly to where we seem to have been friends for a long time. It is enjoyable to see Colin’s enthusiasm as we share by your own imagination. different activities together. What are your upcoming plans for Spring/Summer? When the weather starts to get warmer we are looking forward to fishing, hiking and miniature golf. Mentor’s Name: Bill Duran Tell us about a funny moment you shared together. The first activity Colin and I did was go fishing. We had gone to Chute Pond to fish and before I could even bait my hook Colin had landed a 16” bass. I was skunked for the day. May Match of the Month Mentor’s Name: Brian Lautenbach Youth’s Name: Amadeus How long have you been matched? What do you like about being matched? Amadeus and I have been matched since May of 2012. It has been a great experience for both Amadeus and I. I have seen so much growth from Amadeus in so many different ways. I am proud of all of his accomplishments in and outside of school. It has been a great experience being a mentor. I myself have also grown and learned a lot about myself by being a mentor. What are your upcoming plans for Winter/Spring/ Summer/Fall? We are looking forward to spring and summer time. We enjoy going to the park and playing Frisbee or spending time on the playground. We also have fun at Bay Beach! Tell us about a funny moment you shared together. When we were at the summer YMCA picnic this year it started to rain, and after the rainstorm we were walking through the parking lot and found a little frog. Amadeus wanted to take him home, however we left the frog back to its natural habitat. What are your favorite activities/hobbies to do with each other? Site-Based Corner It’s never too early to plan ahead… Summer Options: *Participate in Summer Match Activities: Meet your Big or Little at Summer Match Activities. See page 1 for more information. To sign up contact Alyssa at Alyssal@bbbsnew.org. *Send each other postcards and letters each month: Keep the connection you have by letting your Big or Little know what you are up to and that you are thinking of them. You can mail letters to the agency or email messages to your Match Support Specialist, and she will forward it to your Big or Little. 2014 - 2015 School-Year Options: *Continue with the match as is: Resume meeting in September after communicating with your Match Support Specialist in August. * Transition to Little’s new school (elementary, middle or high school): Contact your Match Support Specialist ASAP, so we can begin making arrangements at the new school. * Transition to Community-Based Program: Bigs can pick up their Little at home and do fun activities in the community 2+ times each month on evenings or weekends. Requirements include: a copy of Big’s auto-insurance, an additional reference, renewed background checks, and the signing of a new 12-month match agreement. Talk to your Match Support Specialist prior to May 1st if you are interested in learning more. * Close the Match: Talk to your Match Support Specialist ASAP. Match should discuss closure at least one month before the last meeting day, so both Big and Little have time to process the end of the relationship and say good bye. 5 Giving Praise Effectively Praise is a great motivator for youth because it lets a child know that he or she is making progress and can be successful. Be specific. It is important to tell the child why he/she is being praised. General or vague praise is less helpful. For example, “Nice job getting a ‘B’ on your math test” is better than just “Good job”. The First Tee Golf Program Helpful phrases for providing effective praise: "I like it when you... I'm very proud of you for... Thank you for... That's a great way of… Examples of Effective Praise “Great job getting your homework done without anyone asking you to.” “I liked the way you tried to work that problem out for yourself.” “I can tell that you’re really working on using your manners.” "That was a tough game, but you kept going. You have great endurance." "You are such a considerate person. People are lucky to have you as a friend." The First Tee is a nonprofit youth development organization that has introduced the game of golf and its values to more than 9 million young people in the United States. The program’s mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life -enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. For more information please contact Ricci at 4998-2227 or riccic@bbbsnew.org Door County Corner Southern Door Stability Ball Donation Southern Door Schools recently received a PEP (Physical Education Program) Grant and purchased stability balls for each classroom, K-12. Our BBBS room received two of these, thanks to Physical Education teacher Justin Tlachac. Mr. T., as students call him, explained that “Within our PEP Grant, we had budgeted for stability balls to be used in the classroom as an attempt to not only engage the students core throughout the day but also help some of those students who have issues sitting still and need a little extra stimulation to help them focus. Big Sister Haley Jonas and her Little Sister Elizabeth, as well as others, have been using the stability balls. In addition to the health and focus benefits, we appreciate having the extra seating in our room! Our program has grown to 40 matches, with more in progress that will be matched before the end of the school year. Sturgeon Bay Bellin Run Training Practice training continues on Mondays and Thursdays after school for those students who will be in the Bellin Run on June 14th. Southern Door matches may ride the bus with the Southern Door families that are participating. Pizza Party Currently we’re collaborating with Boys and Girls Club, having teens meet their Littles at the after school program once a week. The Bigs get to come and hang out with their Little and enjoy different club activities through the Boys and Girls Club program. At the Sawyer school, we have 2 adults who come once a week for the lunch program to play games, make crafts and go outside for recess with their Littles. Last year’s Pizza Party at Southern Door was such a success that we’ve decided to make it an annual event. On Friday, April 25th Bigs and Littles will be treated to pizza lunch from Sonny’s in Sturgeon Bay. Each student is asked to bring their own beverage, or they will be able to get milk from the cafeteria. Following lunch there will be time for some activities in the gym, such as volleyball, basketball or relay races.
