Letter from the Executive Director
Our agency is cultivating partnerships with local organizations to bring program enriched match activities. Two planned
activities per month focus on critical youth development competencies in five focus areas:
Recreation - Explore and experience sporting events promoting appropriate sportsmanship
Education & Careers - Introduce post-secondary education and career possibilities
Arts & Culture - Increase cultural awareness/respect of other cultures, introduce the arts and performance experiences
Civic Engagement - Reinforce concept of giving back and volunteerism, foster good citizenship
Health & Fitness - Promote exercise and wellness, encourage healthy choices and good nutrition, build self-esteem
Planned goals include forming community partnerships to support cultural and recreational activities as related to the five
focus areas. Collaborations range from area colleges, fitness centers, local businesses, sporting venues and theatres to
community service groups. Included in these events are: fishing for kids at Bay Beach, a tour of our State’s Capitol, an
educational tour of Schneider National to learn about careers in freight, a night at the Green Bay Symphony, an Art Garage
event, a New Zoo event, NBC26 TV tour and many more great opportunities. These events are free or very low cost to
matches.
These events offer an amazing combination of learning opportunities and fun. So, please sign-up and help make each
event wildly successful.
Our ready-to-be-matched waiting list remains near 130 youth who could benefit from a mentor. These enriched activities
are very helpful for Bigs who are looking for match events. We continue needing your help referring and/or recruiting more
Bigs as part of our effort to Start Something Big - one child at a time.
I believe there is nothing that benefits me more than to help another. So, please share how rewarding it is to serve as a Big
Brother, Big Sister or a Big Couple and promote it to your friends, co-workers, family members and other acquaintances.
More information can be found on our website www.bbbsnew.org or contact our office (920) 498-2227 and/or

Thank you for all you do to strengthen our community!!

April Match of the Month
What are your favorite activities/hobbies to do with
each other? Because we don’t live in the Green Bay area
Youth’s Name: Colin
or around a large town we have had to be innovative when
we get together. Colin definitely enjoys fishing, as I do, so
How long have you been matched? What do you like
about being matched? Colin and I have been matched for that is something we try to do often. Other activities ranged
from rock hounding, geo catching, snow shoeing, baking
a year. Our relationship over the past year has grown
cookies to learning to play cards. Activities are only limited
slowly to where we seem to have been friends for a long
time. It is enjoyable to see Colin’s enthusiasm as we share by your own imagination.
different activities together.
What are your upcoming plans for Spring/Summer?
When the weather starts to get warmer we are looking
forward to fishing, hiking and miniature golf.
Mentor’s Name: Bill Duran
Tell us about a funny moment you shared together.
The first activity Colin and I did was go fishing. We had
gone to Chute Pond to fish and before I could even bait my
hook Colin had landed a 16” bass. I was skunked for the
day.
May Match of the Month
Mentor’s Name: Brian Lautenbach
Youth’s Name: Amadeus
How long have you been matched? What do you like
about being matched? Amadeus and I have been
matched since May of 2012. It has been a great
experience for both Amadeus and I. I have seen so much
growth from Amadeus in so many different ways. I am
proud of all of his accomplishments in and outside of
school. It has been a great experience being a mentor. I
myself have also grown and learned a lot about myself by
being a mentor.
What are your upcoming plans for Winter/Spring/
Summer/Fall? We are looking forward to spring and
summer time. We enjoy going to the park and playing
Frisbee or spending time on the playground. We also
have fun at Bay Beach!
Tell us about a funny moment you shared together.
When we were at the summer YMCA picnic this year it
started to rain, and after the rainstorm we were walking
through the parking lot and found a little frog. Amadeus
wanted to take him home, however we left the frog back
to its natural habitat.
What are your favorite activities/hobbies to do with
each other? We enjoy doing many things together… our
favorites include going to Bay Beach, Castle Carts, Sir
Bounce A Lot, Pamperin Park, getting ice cream, bowling,
a fun craft activity, BBBS events, eating pizza and
watching the Waterboard Warriors Ski Team in
Wrightstown.

Summer Options:
*Participate in Summer Match Activities: Meet your Big or Little at Summer Match Activities. See page 1 for more
information. To sign up contact Alyssa at Alyssal@bbbsnew.org.
*Send each other postcards and letters each month: Keep the connection you have by letting your Big or Little
know what you are up to and that you are thinking of them. You can mail letters to the agency or email messages to
your Match Support Specialist, and she will forward it to your Big or Little.
2014 - 2015 School-Year Options:
*Continue with the match as is: Resume meeting in September after communicating with your Match Support
Specialist in August.
* Transition to Little’s new school (elementary, middle or high school): Contact your Match Support Specialist
ASAP, so we can begin making arrangements at the new school.
* Transition to Community-Based Program: Bigs can pick up their Little at home and do fun activities in the
community 2+ times each month on evenings or weekends. Requirements include: a copy of Big’s auto-insurance,
an additional reference, renewed background checks, and the signing of a new 12-month match agreement. Talk to
your Match Support Specialist prior to May 1st if you are interested in learning more.
* Close the Match: Talk to your Match Support Specialist ASAP. Match should discuss closure at least one month
before the last meeting day, so both Big and Little have time to process the end of the relationship and say good bye.

Giving Praise Effectively
Praise is a great motivator for youth because it lets a child know that he or she is making progress and can be successful.


Be specific. It is important to tell the child why he/she is being praised.
General or vague praise is less helpful. For example, “Nice job getting a ‘B’ on your math test” is better than just
“Good job”.
The First Tee Golf Program
Helpful phrases for providing effective praise:


"I like it when you...
I'm very proud of you for...


Thank you for...
That's a great way of…
Examples of Effective Praise
 “Great job getting your homework done without anyone asking
you to.”
 “I liked the way you tried to work that problem out for yourself.”
 “I can tell that you’re really working on using your manners.”

"That was a tough game, but you kept going. You have great
endurance."
 "You are such a considerate person. People are lucky to have
you as a friend."
The First Tee is a nonprofit youth development
organization that has introduced the game of golf
and its values to more than 9 million young people
in the United States. The program’s mission is to
impact the lives of young people by providing
educational programs that build character, instill life
-enhancing values and promote healthy choices
through the game of golf.
If your child attends the Salvation Army or Boys and
Girls Club during the summer they can take
advantage of this program for FREE!!

Door County Corner
Southern Door
Stability Ball Donation
Southern Door Schools recently received a PEP (Physical Education
Program) Grant and purchased stability balls for each classroom, K-12.
Our BBBS room received two of these, thanks to Physical Education
teacher Justin Tlachac. Mr. T., as students call him, explained that
“Within our PEP Grant, we had budgeted for stability balls to be used in
the classroom as an attempt to not only engage the students core
throughout the day but also help some of those students who have
issues sitting still and need a little extra stimulation to help them focus.
Big Sister Haley Jonas and her Little Sister Elizabeth, as well as others,
have been using the stability balls. In addition to the health and focus
benefits, we appreciate having the extra seating in our room! Our
program has grown to 40 matches, with more in progress that will be
matched before the end of the school year.
Sturgeon Bay
Bellin Run Training
Practice training continues on Mondays and Thursdays after
school for those students who will be in the Bellin Run on
June 14th. Southern Door matches may ride the bus with
the Southern Door families that are participating.
Pizza Party
Currently we’re collaborating with Boys and Girls
Club, having teens meet their Littles at the after
school program once a week. The Bigs get to come
and hang out with their Little and enjoy different club
activities through the Boys and Girls Club program.
At the Sawyer school, we have 2 adults who come
once a week for the lunch program to play games,
make crafts and go outside for recess with their
Littles.
Last year’s Pizza Party at Southern Door was such a
success that we’ve decided to make it an annual event.
On Friday, April 25th Bigs and Littles will be treated to
pizza lunch from Sonny’s in Sturgeon Bay. Each
student is asked to bring their own beverage, or they will
be able to get milk from the cafeteria. Following lunch
there will be time for some activities in the gym, such as
volleyball, basketball or relay races.
Lastly, we are excited that the YMCA has invited our
matches to play at the YMCA for free during their
match meeting.
