President’s Message
Winter 2011/2012
2012 has arrived and with it are changes for the American Lhasa Apso
Club. Thanks to the efforts of Bud Brockway and the ALAC board
over a period of several years, ALAC has new by-laws. The AKC
Board of Directors approved the new by-laws at its October meeting
and our club is now operating under the new rules. Highlights of the
changes (other than those driven by AKC) include 1) the addition of
a new position by splitting the secretarial chores into recording and
corresponding secretaries. The board will appoint a new corresponding
secretary at the February meeting. 2) Effective immediately, all future
membership voting done by first class mail will have a 30 day time
frame rather than the previous 45 days. 3) The club’s fiscal year has
been changed for tax purposes and is now January 1 to December 31.
4) The addition of a foreign membership which restricts voting privileges for foreign members to voting for judges for national specialties
and futurities. Thanks go to Bud and the ALAC board for getting these
changes accomplished!
2011 Notable Firsts
ALAC presented the Member of the Year Award to Joyce Johanson at
the annual meeting. For more than a decade, Joyce has been a leader in
the club, filling various roles on the board and as a committee chairperson. Congratulations and thank you, Joyce, for all of your efforts to
support and improve ALAC.
Top Twenty Competition – the first ever Top 20 Competition was well
received by those who participated and attended the opening event for
the 2011 National. Congratulations to GCH Sundancer’s Aleksandra,
owned by Kathy Hamilton and Lori Johnson, bred by Marsha and Tom
Worlton and Lori Johnson, and shown by Tonia Holibaugh for garnering
both the Top 20 Award and the People’s Choice Award!
Cut Down Sweepstakes – Another first and a very popular addition to
this year’s National. Congratulations to CH. FFT Kisses of Fire owned
by Vickie Kuhlmann, Julie Timbers and Debbie Rothman, bred by Julie
and Kaylee Timbers and Donna Sonnenberg for this win.
The annual meeting was very interactive this year, and I thank those
who attended and participated. Susan Giles shared the future plans
for the Bulletin which has been discussed during the past year by the
board. The decision to go digital has been difficult. NOBODY wants
to give up the Bulletin as we know it, but advertising simply does not
support the cost of producing hard copy. The club can no longer afford
to underwrite the costs. There are many advantages to going digital
including plans for less expensive advertising that will be sent to all
Non Sporting judges in addition to the membership, more frequent publishing, thus making the information and advertising more timely, more
articles planned including ways to recognize past and present Lhasa
fanciers – a myriad of possibilities. It will take time to develop the
new format, and we are seeking members who are interested in helping
Bobbie with developing the advertising as well all who would like to
contribute articles of interest to the members. All of you Retirees –now
is the time to volunteer!!!! There is a benefit to aging – more time to
help your club!
Retirement of the Dot Primm Memorial Challenge Trophy.
KUDOS to Susan Giles for retiring this prestigious trophy. Susan not
only owned, but also bred two of her three National Specialty Winners.
2008 – BIS Ch. Ta Sen Victory Peyote, 2010 - BIS GCH My Thai Ta
Sen Halleluiah Chorus (bred by Mary Vaden) and, 2011 – BIS GCH. Ta
Sen Bond James Bond.
Special Thanks to:
Linda Jarrett and her show committee for a great National week –
super hotel and weather and plenty of fun to go around. Special thanks
to Julie Timbers for spearheading the Top 20, and to Fran Strayer and
Marsha Susag for and cut down Sweeps competition.
Other changes occurring in 2012 – the revised ALAC handbook will
be exclusively online with hard copy provided at cost plus shipping to
members making that request. Voting for National Specialty judges
will now be a two step process rather than three. The first ballot will
allow voting for up to 10 judges. Working with that list, the top four
judges who are both available and have agreed to ALAC’s financial and
geographical restrictions will be on the second ballot. On the second
ballot, members may (not must) vote for two judges. The judge with
the most votes will be invited to judge the National, and the judge with
the 2nd highest tally will be invited to judge the Regional. Ballots and
voting for the judges will be sent electronically to members with email
and via snail mail to all others.
Ed Valle – for his service on the board along with volunteering to take
on Meet the Breeds in Orlando at the AKC Eukanuba Invitational.
Everybody who has opened the world of Agility to the Lhasa Fancywhat a fabulous year for the dedicated contenders!
All of the ALAC Committee Chairpersons and Board Members –
for another year of service and dedication to the club.
Bobbie Wood – for representing our breed – and the entire NS group
as Breeder of the Year for Non Sporting Breeds at the AKC Eukanuba
Invitational.

Research about Solid Gold Sundancer Dry Dog Food with
Curcumin, it continues to Help in a Variety of Health Problems.
Additional research reprinted in the Dallas Morning News, August 16th, 2011. The title of the article
in the newspaper: “Could This Powder be “Solid Gold’?”
PubMed, a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine, lists more than 4,000 studies using curcumin as herbal medicine by practicing physicians.
Dr. Bharat B. Aggurwal, professor of experimental therapeutics at the University of Texas at M.D.
Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, has helped produce more than 100 of these curcumin studies. He says
curcumin has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities. He also recommends it for pain management and Alzheimer’s.
Further research in the book, “Real Cause, Real Cure,” Dr. Jacob Tertelbaum at the Fibromyalgia and
Fatigue Centers shows how curcumin blocks the inflammatory cytokines, helps white blood cells move faster,
decreases allergic inflammation and strengthens cells against bacteria.
Solid Gold SunDancer dry dog food with curcumin comes in 4, 15 and 33 pound hermetically sealed
bags. Some dog food companies have reduced the size of their bags to 25 or 28 pound sizes. Not Solid Gold. Our
bags remain at 33 pounds.
The Solid Gold Sea Meal is always fed with our dog food. See our catalogue specially for Oriental dogs,
Arctic dogs, and dogs from England, Scotland, Ireland and all water dogs (labs, poodles – as well as terriers,
spaniels and retrievers).
In 1958, the U.S. Congress wanted to fund a study using curcumin
and cancer. But the pharmaceutical companies lobbied against it. They said
it might interfere with their revenue from their cancer drugs so the lobbyist
stopped the study.
In 1971, President Nixon tried to have the study begin, but Watergate
ended that.
Ask your local animal supply store to get in the Solid Gold SunDancer dry dog food with curcumin. It is the chicken/white fish base with tapioca
and quinoa to control gas. It is also helpful for tear-staining, ear infections,
bladder stones and chewing at the feet.
You have tasted curcumin when you eat mustard. Curcumin gives mustard its bright yellow color and its spicy flavor. It’s also called curry. The Indians
(in India) refer it to curcumin as Solid Gold for a variety of healing problems.
Ask your local pet store for a free catalogue. If
they don’t have a SunDancer catalogue, call us at
(619)258-7356, M-F, 10am to 5pm
Pacific time. Or e-mail us at sarah@solidgoldholisitc.com, you can also visit our website at

ALAC Member of the Year
ALAC Bulletin Board
When ALAC’s Board of Directors made the decision to institute a
“Member of the Year Award,” the idea was met with great excitement among
Board members because we knew that many people in our club volunteer their
time and work hard for the betterment of the breed we all love so much. When
the Secretary notified the Board that she had received four nominations, I was
surprised to find that two of them were for me—one from Marsha Susag and
another from my husband.
At the Awards banquet, we were having so much fun at our table that I missed
Barbara’s first words regarding the award. Then when I realized she was talking about me, my heart stumbled a bit. (My face also flushed because by then
a lot of people were staring my way as Barbara read from a list about my work
with ALAC.) When at last she announced my name and called me forward to
receive the award, I was both humbled and honored—and I remain so every time I think of it. ALAC is comprised
of many members who, over their years of involvement with the club, have given freely of their time, talents, and
money to serve ALAC and the Lhasa Apso. To be chosen from among them is indeed a high honor.
The time is coming when once again each of you will have the opportunity to nominate an ALAC member to
receive the Member of the Year Award at the 2012 Awards Banquet. I encourage each of you to think about a
person—whether it be a close friend, a spouse, or a member of your local Lhasa Club—that you know has sought to
serve ALAC and our breed. Perhaps a committee from each local club could work together to nominate someone.
The nomination form is available in the Bulletin and on the club’s website, and nominations can come from single
members or groups.
The form itself (page 48) is brief so feel free to attach a separate letter containing the details that won’t fit on
the form itself. You will notice that, in addition to the number of years involved in ALAC, the requirements for
the award involve (1) Service to the Club, (2) Contributions to the Breed, and (3) Dedication to/Promotion of the
Welfare of the Breed. It is important that the nomination address each of those requirements thoroughly.
Please know that, although I was kept in the dark about my nomination, it is not necessary that you do so with
the person you or your club selects for nomination. As a matter of fact, you might just ask that person for help as
you fill out the form. The more detail and specifics you can provide in each section, the better. You need to go to
the source for the details.
Thanks again to Marsha and Lynn for my nomination, to the Board members who voted for me, and to the many
members who congratulated me with kind words. I look forward to congratulating next Member of the Year and
ask you all not only to consider nominating someone for the honor but also to do it!
Best Wishes to you all for a great 2012!

American Lhasa Apso Club
Conference Call Board Meeting
Minutes Conference Call
August 17, 2011
Treasurer’s Report was approved as submitted. We have $8000 of
expendable income.
The meeting was called to order by Barbara Schwartz at 8:05PM EDT.
The Roll was called. The following members of the board were present:
Barbara Schwartz, Ann Burton, Beverly Simms, Bobbie Wood, Clay
Williams, Jan Bruton, Jan Graunke, Joyce Johanson, Marsha Susag,
Naomi Hanson, Susan Giles, Vicki Kuhlman. Absent were Ray Sledzik
and Ed Valle.
Committee Reports
JEC: Leslie Baumann submitted a brief report on the Penta Institute
in Indiana, PA.
Native Stock Committee: The board needs to approve the registrar
for FFS. Move this item to new business.
Corrections were made to the minutes which were approved as corrected. The issue of the ballot for regions for the NSSC was discussed.
The decision to issue a ballot with both choices suggested by the NSSC
with no preference indicated was reviewed.
Local Club Liaison - Brief items from the regional clubs were noted.
Handbook: Joyce got copies of the directory and handbook. Corrections are being made. Joyce suggests publication in January (hard
copy). We hope to have it online sooner; we will solidify the plans for
putting it online in October.
The minutes of the August 2 board meeting were approved as submitted.
President’s Report: Board members were reminded to keep Board
matters in confidence. In addition, members were reminded that on
chat lists, they should indicate their own opinions when posting and not
indicate they were opinions of the Board.
Membership: No new members in August.
Website: We are getting more and more hits. A dog was placed
through the website. All submissions to the website have to go through
Marsha. Barb will check if the current breeder referral persons are still
able to continue. New titles will not be listed until we receive confirmation from AKC. We would like to have a link with Rescue to their
website.
Secretary Report: Note was taken of the number of mailings
timely sent over the last two months. Thanks to all who worked on
the mailings. There was discussion of the ALAC Member of the Year
nominations which were emailed to board members. It was decided that
August 30 will be the deadline for board members to cast their ballots.
Board members agreed to vote via email to Ann by 8/30.
Old Business
Meet the Breeds: For the event in Orlando, Rob Mitten cannot do it.
We have asked Ed Valle to be the point person.
Treasurer’s report pended while Steve gave his report.
NSSC:
2012 Specialty Chair. Steve Campbell has agreed to be show chair.
Marsha moved (2011-38) and Susan seconded a motion to approve
Steve Campbell as 2012 show chair. The motion passed. Susan
wanted to go back to the system of a standing committee which carries
from year to year.
Steve Campbell joined the meeting to report from NSSC. The ballot
for the region change was sent and caused some controversy. Steve
reported on the possible four sites for the 2013 specialty.
The 2013 judges ballot has been sent out. The site in Phoenix is turning
out to be very expensive based on required room nights. Several sites
in California were mentioned. San Ramone is no longer available (that
site has several all breed shows at the same time). Reno has dates in
September in conjunction with other nationals. The potential judges
have been given dates for third week in October. Hotels in Sacramento
are Red Lion $99/night, elevator, has right date, no pet deposit, motorhomes no hookups park at no cost, with rooms. Airport shuttle, 4800
sq feet ballroom at no cost. Small food service cart in the ballroom. No
cost for meeting rooms. Agility is 30 miles away with an agility setup
with equipment. Lions Gate similar costs, $109/night $40/pet deposit,
no elevator, no motorhome hookups 25$ only six spaces, ballroom $250
per day, 5000squ feet. Steve recommended pursuing the Red Lion
option. The board asked the NSSC to contact the Red Lion Hotel for
availability and other items for the week of 10/21 to 10/26/2013 and
report back to the board. We will move this to New Business. Suspend
committee reports to vote.
2013 Specialty Site : Already discussed
New Business
AKC Lifetime Achievement Awards: Jean Fournier was
proposed as the conformation nominee. Jean Fournier was selected.
Obedience person was proposed as Betty Withers and she was selected.
Performance nominee selected was Jerry Price. Barbara will forward
our choices to AKC.
Local Club Specialties: The board had approved local specialties
for five years at a time; this approval will expire in September, 2011. In
September AKC will require renewal of the approvals. This will be on
the agenda in October.
Board Meetings: This was discussion of whether board meetings
should be open. It was the general feeling of the board that the agenda
be published 10 days in advance of the meeting. It will go on ALAC
Online and members can send suggestions. Approved minutes can be
posted on ALAC Online as well as on the website.
Marsha moved (2011-37) and Bobbie seconded that the board give
permission to NSSC to contact the Red Lion Hotel in Sacramento to
ascertain availability the week of 10/21 with a report back to the board
by September 15. The motion passed. The northern California club
will pursue the option of a site near the Del Val all breed shows. (October 17th and 18th ,the 19th is all specialties and 20th and 21st all breed
shows). If the Red Lion is chosen the Northern CALAC club will have
their specialty in conjunction with specialty week.

to coordinate with Homeland Security to have American dogs do this
work. Currently, many dogs doing search and rescue are foreign bred.
Sarah Fitzgerald will sign the treaty for ALAC. Susan moved (201139) and Jan Graunke seconded a motion to donate $1000 to this cause.
Marsha objected to such a large expenditure. Ann amended the
motion to $500 and Jan Graunke seconded the amendment. Motion required a roll call vote; the motion failed. Vicki moved (2011-40) and
Clay seconded a motion to send $300. The motion passed.
We ended the fiscal year with $4252.70 in the red. We still have a
healthy bank account. Marsha discussed the club’s expenses broken
down by household. Unusual expenses were in member awards, computer software for the Bulletin.
ALAC dues have not been raised for many years; this is something
to be considered. Jan Graunke helped save a considerable amount by
obtaining the awards plaques at a lower price and saving on shipping by
bringing the plaques.

Marsha has met most of her goals for the year; still working on putting
photos up on the website.
2011 National Specialty: The premium list is at 70%. Onofrio
needed info from last year’s premium list; this info was sent to Onofrio
today. Premium should be in the mail by next week. Marsha has sent
the mailing list to Onofrio.
There are a few unpaid dues but several were received after Marsha
published the list.
Treasurer’s report was accepted.
Clay moved and Joyce seconded a motion to adjourn. The meeting was
adjourned at 10:30PM EDT.
AKC Delegate Report
Ray was not able to attend the September delegate meeting. He may be
able to attend the December Delegate meeting. Ray is concerned about
his ability to continue as delegate. Delegates may not be involved in
dog related business. Ray has been our delegate for over 40 years.
A rule change is being considered to allow for a Reserve Best in Show.

Board of Director’s Meeting
American Lhasa Apso Club
October 11, 2011
Albuquerque, New Mexico
Some of the entries have been unruly or offensive. Barb asked Vicki
to come up with a list of appropriate behavior which will be allowed.
Marsha moved (2011-41) that we give it four months to see if the
etiquette proposed is adhered to. Jan G. seconded the motion. This
matter will be revisited at the February Board meeting. Vicki, Marsha,
and Clay are moderators. Motion passed.
The meeting was called to order by Barbara Schwartz.
Group Re-alignment
The roll was called. Ray Sledzik and Naomi Hanson were absent.
In lieu of a president’s report, Barbara thanked the board for working
together this year. She also commented on the project (9/11) for the
search and rescue.
Tom Davis is trying to push through 11 groups. This is way too many
groups. We need direction for Ray. Marsha moved (2011-42) and
Clay seconded a motion to direct Ray to maintain our opposition to
the realignment. They are trying to get the groups down to less than 18
breeds per group. The motion passed.
Secretary’s Report.
Meet the Breeds
The minutes were accepted as submitted. The board was elected as
slated. The regions ballot results were announced and the choice was
for 3 regions. The by-laws ballot results were announced and the bylaws changes were accepted.
Ann is doing MTB in NY and Ed Valle is doing MTB in Orlando. If
you are at AKC Eukanuba show in Orlando, stop by to help and if you
have a dog let them spend some time at the booth.
2012 Judge Selection (Deferred)
ALAC Rescue trust submitted to the Secretary: $8177.61 balance in
the account.
The Secretary’s report was accepted.
Parent Club Approval
Last time the approvals were requested by AKC blanket approval was
granted for five years. It is time to renew the parent club approvals
for the regional clubs’ specialties. Barbara found two clubs on our list
which were not active: The San Diego Lhasa Apso Club and the Lhasa

Apso Club of Southern California. There are four clubs with independent specialties: Willamette, Merrimack, Twin Cities, and Greater Milwaukee. Marsha moved (2011-43) that the clubs with independent

the motion from 5 years to 3 years for clubs which hold independent specialties. Motion passed. Susan moved(2011-44)that the
clubs holding regional club specialties (designated) receive 2 year
approvals. The American Lhasa Apso Club’s policy is that these

The approved by-laws have to be sent to AKC for review by the AKC
board.
The handbook and directory should be ready by the first of the year
(digitally). The hand book has the quasi permanent items; committee descriptions, by-laws, etc. The directory is the annual club roster.
Options for binders were submitted with costs. Proposed is the one
binder to hold both handbook and directory. Melissa wants the board
to determine how many to print. The members will have the option
of purchasing the hard copy edition; the price would cover cost and
shipping. New members would receive the hard copy. Melissa wants
direction on number of copies to produce. Joyce moved (2011-47) the
board accept Melissa’s proposal to have the handbook and directory on line and that we have hard copy binders (100) produced to
be available for purchase for cost plus shipping. Marsha seconded.
Motion passed.

specialties may not be held within one week prior or one week
after the National Specialty. Motion passed.
By-laws.
Why is there the requirement for futurity number to be on the entry
form for the Specialty? The reason for the number is to secure the
futurity from ineligible entrants.
Linda Byrne requested an explanation as to why Ed Biven is not the
judge for the 2012 National. Barbara says she inadvertently sent out the
inquiry to the judges with the wrong date. The board felt that Barbara’s
explanation was full and sufficient.
She also wanted to ask why the show superintendent (Onofrio) could
not get the premiums out to the members.
National Specialty Show Committee
The committee sent a number of proposals for approval by the board.
1.
Judges Selection-Marsha moved (2011-48) and Susan seconded a motion to change the process of judge selection from three
ballots to two ballots. First ballot a vote for up to ten; the top ten will
be contacted for availability and the top four will be on the second ballot. On that ballot two votes may (not must) be cast. The top two will
be the judges for the national and regional. Motion passed.
2.
Fees – no action required.
3.
Publication of judge ballots - Clay moved (2011-49) that
we publish the results of the final ballot for judges; total ballots
cast and the votes received by each of the judges who accepted the
assignment. Bev seconded the motion. Lively discussion followed.
Bev rescinded her second. Clay amended his motion to include the
top four. Marsha seconded the motion. Motion passed by majority
vote.
4.
Susan moved (2011-50) that we email the ballot to members with hard copy to those without email. Marsha seconded the
motion. The emails should come from Betty who is in charge of the
judge selection process. The corresponding secretary might perform
this task. The motion passed
5.
Create a National Specialty Committee – Create a committee consisting of the show chair, trophy chair, catalogue chair, etc. to
provide the continuity from year to year. Susan moved (2011-51) and
Joyce seconded a motion to create this committee. The chair of this
committee is already approved. Concerns about stagnation and not
including new people were expressed. The personality factors were
discussed. Clay called the question. The motion passed.
Canine Health Foundation
The club does not have a standard for health testing. It is not in the
by-laws.
Bulletin
Susan submitted a proposal for the Bulletin to go digital on a bi-monthly
basis. Members not on line would receive a b/w hard copy. Advertising
cost would decrease.
The annual color edition could be combined with the yearbook. The
cost of production would be greatly reduced. Postage costs would also
go down. Need a features editor to do this. Marsha moved (2011-45)
that we email the current on-line edition of the bulletin out to the
judges. Seconded. Motion passed.
At the general meeting the costs of the Bulletin are covered in Marsha’s
report. The members will be able to see why the suggestion to go online
is made. Consideration of a subscription will be discussed for members
who want to keep the Bulletin as is.
In summary, we will have to raise dues, or there will be a subscription
fee for the bulletin for hard copies in lieu of on line receipt of the bulletin. The Bulletin will go online to the judges. All the options will be
presented to the membership.
New Business
Native Stock
JEC
Marsha moved (2011-52) that we dissolve this committee. Motion
was seconded by Jan and passed.
Don Hanson has resigned as co-chair. Leslie wants to continue but
needs a co-chair. Barbara will search for a candidate.
Yearbook.
Futurity
Decision about the status of the yearbook will be held over until decisions about the Bulletin are made.
Clay would like to initiate a Maturity competition. Clay would like to
address this at the next meeting. To publish the futurity entry form on
ALAC Online quarterly was suggested by Lynn Replogle.
Increasing Revenue
Marsha summarized ideas already mentioned to increase revenue: raise
dues, make the Bulletin a subscription publication, seeking sponsorship
for mailings. Marsha would like to increase the credit card fees.
Breed Standard Committee
Marsha moved (2011-46) that projects being sent to the membership
be submitted to the board first. Clay seconded. Motion passed.
The proposal Susan brought from JTZ was reviewed; they want to serve
38
American Lhasa Apso Club
Annual General Meeting
as web site provider. They can create a shopping cart as a means of
raising revenue. Marsha says George also can do this. The shopping
cart could create income by making it possible to sell ways and means
items, sale items, dues, trophy donations etc. Bev moved (2011-53)
and Joyce seconded a motion for Marsha to contact George to see if
he could create a similar secure shopping cart and report back by
December.
The results of the Bylaws ballot were that the Bylaws changes were
accepted.
Treasurer’s Report
Marsha announced that the current treasury balance is $55,025.25.
Marsha expressed our thanks to members who volunteered to help
with the all breed trials; Ed Moses, Rita Cloutier, and Phyllis Misite,
Leslie Baumann, Jan Graunke, Joyce Johanson, and Kathy Ruprecht.
Through their efforts the club has realized a sizeable cash profit that
supports the national specialty and other projects.
Onofrio
There was an inquiry regarding their non performance as superintendents for the specialty. Obviously they failed to send the premium list
to the membership. Next year we must carefully review the dates in the
contracts to assure that the contract is correct; it should be scrutinized
very carefully by several members of the show committee.
Marsha noted that our club is in financial decline. In FY2011 the cost
per household was $84.25.
Susan brought up the idea of changing the state in which we are incorporated. The benefit would be to conduct electronic business. Texas is
one possibility. We need more information. Don Evans will be asked to
check the state of Virginia. Jan G. will check various states. Clay will
check costs.
AKC Delegate
Ray Sledzik was not able to be present. Ray has been delegate for 40
years. The delegates passed a proposal to award reserve BIS. They are
still trying to pass the group realignment.
It was announced that long time member Marv Whitman passed away.
Health and Education will be discussed in December.
Committee Reports
.The meeting was adjourned at 11:25am.
AKC Gazette
Respectfully submitted,
Ann E. Burton, Secretary
The AKC Gazette is discontinuing its print edition and going to a digital, on-line format. Breed columns will continue to be a priority. There
will be a new breed column editor effective October 2011.

American Lhasa Apso Club
Annual General Meeting
include: Janice Tilley, Joyce Johanson, Beverly Simms, Leslie Baumann, Don Evans, and Don Hanson
We would like each member who provides the Committee with input to
let us know what changes, if any, to these documents you think would
enable judges, Lhasa Apso breeders, and others to more clearly comprehend/interpret our standard and the breed in general.
The Breeder Education program for 2011 is being presented on Oct
12 at the National. The speaker is Dr Donny MacDougal DVM. The
subject is Anatomy and the Resulting Movement. The program will be
followed, with a cut down sweepstake.
Attached to this e-mail is a chart (a PDF document) that compares our
current Lhasa breed standard to the AKC recommended format for
breed standards. The breed standards of newly admitted AKC breeds,
as well as, the breed standard of any currently admitted AKC breed
whose standard is in revision follows this AKC recommended format.
The program for the 2012 National has already been confirmed. We
will be having Jenny Dickenson, a behaviorist speaking and working
hands on with the dogs. She will also be available for CGC testing. She
currently teaches Canine Behavior at Mt. Ida College and is a Lhasa
owner.
Constructive comments and ideas will be welcomed as input by the
Committee during this project. We would request that a particular
comment not be submitted by the same member more than once. Each
comment will be filed (along with the name of the submitting member)
in a file that the Committee will use for this project. This will enable
the Committee to contact the appropriate member if it has a question or
wants to further clarify the member’s input.
My plans for the coming year are to get a Yahoo group going for BEC .
Articles of Education will be worked on and submitted to the board for
approval, before being posted to the website.

BSC-Breed Standard Committee
The Committee would appreciate it if a separate e-mail (or other written
correspondence) is submitted for each area of the Standard or Illustrated Guide on which you would like to comment. For example, if
you would like to comment on both the “size” and “mouth & muzzle”
sections, please submit two e-mails (one with “size” and one with
“mouth & muzzle” in the subject line). This will allow for greater ease
in filing comments in an appropriate place for Committee reference as it
proceeds through its review of each section.

So far for the 2012 Futurity year (April 1, 2011 – March 31, 2012) we
have 10 litters nominated.
As you all realize by now, this years Futurity Judges Ballot present the
Club with a dilemma – Four individuals accepted the challenge –
Jan Graunke (WI), Naomi Hanson (WA), Marilyn Ricciotti (RI) and
Linda Kendal Smith (DE) and for the first time in memory we had a tie
vote, this year between Naomi Hanson and Linda Kendal Smith.
After much discussion a tie breaker vote was initiated with a deadline
of October 5, 2011 for on-line votes and snail mail votes which is about
25. Those ballots will go to Lea in CO and she will tally them and send
the numbers to Barbara at the specialty, hopefully in time for the Board
Meeting. Barbara agreed to pick up the cost of having Lea tally those
few. Clay paid for stamps and stamps on the return ballots, and Marsha
donated the paper and laser toner and time so there was no net cost to
the Futurity funds. A very big THANK YOU to Barbara, Lea , Clay and
Marsha.
Marsha has informed me that Paul Voight has 3 beautiful wood plaques
for Grand Futurity winners with NO dates on them, that he will donate
to us for future use. I think we should take them and save some money
for the next couple of years. THANK YOU PAUL.
And lastly, I think we need to put our heads together to avoid the frustration everyone encountered this year when trying to enter the Futurity
and Nationals on-line. I’m sure no one realized Onofrio would not be
equipped to accept the Futurity litter numbers on their on-line entry site.
Hopefully everyone who wanted to enter the Futurity classes was able
to do so.

JEC Committee Report
Judges Education Committee supported five programs last year including a judges study group in Florida (led by Dana Read), the AKC NonSporting Institute (led by Susan Giles), the Springfield, IL Memorial
Day cluster (led by Joyce Johanson), the ACEF (Col. Pede) Institute in
Louisville, KY and the Senior Judges (Dr. Penta) Institute in Indiana,
PA.
So far, we have two requests for programs next year. Both in March.
One at the Kansas City, MO cluster and one at the Fort Worth, TX
cluster.
We also have the JEC home study CD for judges very near completion.
JEC Committee member Joyce Johanson is leading our first mentor
training program at the National Specialty this year.
The JEC continues to seek high resolution photographs to include in the
presentation from the membership. We prefer studio/candid portraits;

Bulletin
Susan Giles went over a proposal to publish the Bulletin on-line. Last
year the Bulletin lost $8601. The proposal presented would publish the
Bulletin on-line, bi-monthly. It would be posted on the ALAC web-site
and emailed to members. This would greatly reduce the cost. A year
end edition could be combined with the yearbook. Cons are that individuals would have to print out features and articles if desired. Members with no email access would receive black and white hard copies.
On-line it would be sent to judges 6 xs per year.
Another option would be to publish the bulletin as a subscription magazine @ $40.00 annually.
Local Club Liaison
Clubs with e-mail contacts have been contacted periodically to inform
them of board actions and to solicit questions and responses. To all the
local clubs, please make sure I am sending these messages to the right
person in your club, as occasionally these contacts change.
Respectfully submitted,

Futurity
This years Futurity Judge is Debby Burke.
For the 2011 Futurity year (April 1, 2010 – March 31, 2011) there were
33 litters nominated, down from the previous years 37. We have are seeing a continual decline in litter nominations.
As a suggestion, the futurity nomination forms and rules could be

people seem to be taking advantage of being able to attend the Albuquerque International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta just prior to our National

with a lot of hard work on this project. This couldn’t have happened
without a lot of information from Barb, Bobbie, Janice, and Marsha.
Thank you.

This past year marked a successful ‘yes’ vote regarding the two-pronged
approach for expanding the Lhasa Apso gene pool.
Seventeen Gompa dogs, including 5 young puppies, are now fully registered with the American Kennel Club. Currently I’m working with AKC
on back-filling the pedigrees beyond three generations, using official
UKC pedigrees.
In the upcoming weeks, I will be working with ALAC’s webmaster updating the Native Stock area, switching the focus from education about
the vote itself to what’s relevant in the future, specifically AKC FSS
(Foundation Stock Service) procedures, including the Critique Process.
National Specialty 2012.
The specialty will be in Mansfield, MA. Jan Bruton will judge the
National. Keke Kahn will judge the Regional.
ALAC’s President, along with ALAC’s Board of Directors, have appointed me Native Stock Registrar. Given that the remaining work to
be done falls within the Registrar’s duties, it may be appropriate to
dissolve the Native Stock
Committee.

ALAC National Specialty Steering Committee
The following is being recommended to the Board from the Committee regarding four issues that have been approved by the Committee
consisting of Susan Giles, Naomi Hanson, Marsha Susag, Jan Graunke,
Barbara Wood and Stephen Campbell. We would like the Board to approve these items as part of our Committee’s Rules and Regulations.
ALAC Ways & Means:
Due to the past National purchases and substantial inventory which
we still have, as well as contacting the promotional contact, Judi, and
receiving the prices and overwhelming S/H charges which would not
be at this time be beneficial to ALAC - and selling the items there are
still multiple items left from last year’s purchase for the National which
we believed would be would sell well but did not.
Judges Selection for National Specialties:
An initial ballot is mailed to the membership with an explanation how
the election process is being conducted. At this time each member may
vote for up to ten persons and return within the stated deadline.
The top ten judges with the most votes will be contacted for availability
and agree to fees and restrictions, in the order to votes received, until
we have four who are willing and available.
A final ballot is sent out to the membership with the four available and
the top two selected will judge the National, number one and the ALAC
Regional, number two. Each member may vote for up to two judges.
The only item purchased this year are Lhasa Apso Windchimes
10 will be sent to Marsha - I will prepay s/h to her - and submit a expense report.
Windchimes are online at $35.95 - price to be determined by Marsha &
Barbara - as of the time of this email - it has not be designated.
PS: I saw a great bag which we could iron on- the image of the LHASA
APSO - I will later on contact Judi re: bags as well the contact person
who prepared to ALAC Logo for the T-shirts to seek out a good deal
and possibliy more interest in our items.
Judges Fees:
Judges will be paid a fee of $300.00 for judging the show, plus the club
will reimburse for domestic air fare, hotel for a maximum of two nights,
meals, airport parking. If driving, the judge will be reimbursed for gas
at the IRS most recent stated rate.
I suggest that if possible the ALAC webiste would have a “shop store”
wherein our member and even those which just stop in to view have the
option of purchasing the items which we have.
Publishing Voting Tallies:
The results of the voting for the National Specialty Judges will be as
follows:
The results of the final ballot will be published with the total votes cast
and the number of votes received for each of the two judges selected to
judge.
Amber Chaviano, Chairperson ALAC Ways & Means
Website
Marsha requested photos to put up. The Bulletin is now on-line. Approved Board minutes are in the members section. New titles are published. They are working on a shopping cart feature. A question was
raised about putting the old awards videos on the web site.
National Show Committee:
Under the umbrella of the steering committee we recommend a permanent committee, which will consist of show chair, trophy, ways and
means, hospitality, advertising, hotel negotiations and the possibility of
a local club liaison if applicable, as well as other pertinent members.
Yearbook
I only have 12 ads for 2009, so will assume I will be doing at least a two
year. I will be bringing the checks to the National to give to Marsha. So
if you want to make an announcement that I will STILL take 2009 ads if
people are so inclined, that will be fine. We still may get a few more.
Stephen Campbell, Chairperson
NSSC
Susan explained the new procedure to select judges: it cuts the number
of ballots from 3 ballots to 2. The regions ballot determined that there
will be 3 regions. The board approved a request to reinstate a permanent specialty committee.

Brief Board Meeting
10/13/11
Linda Byrne had asked to the board to explain why Edd Biven was not
judging the national in 2012 when he was elected in the judge selection
balloting. Barbara explained that she had mistakenly copied the wrong
dates in contacting and in the contract. Unfortunately, when the mistake
was discovered he was not available for the correct dates.
The meeting was called to order at 4:53 PM by President Barbara
Schwartz. The purpose of the meeting was to comply with the bylaws
requirement that the newly elected board hold a brief meeting following the election. The new Board assumes their responsibilities as of
November 1, 2011. The schedule for Board meetings for the coming
year was set.
In response to questions regarding the failure of Onofrio to send premiums to all the members, Barbara explained that this is being pursued
with Onofrio and we hope for some resolution; possibly financial. They
clearly failed to perform that part of their job.
Attendees: Barbara Schwartz, Marsha Susag, Clay Williams, Jan
Graunke, Bobbie Wood, Joyce Johanson, Jan Bruton, Susan Giles,

Absent: Steve Campbell, Ray Sledzik, Naomi Hanson

NOV. 17, 2009 - DEC 17, 2011
People are born
so that they can learn how
to live a good life —
like loving everybody all the time
and being nice.
Dogs already know how to do that,
so they don’t have to stay as long.”
Cruiser took his delightful attitude into the show ring with great success, and brought his funny loveable
personality, his irrepressible enthusiasm into our hearts and homes. He had a shining future ahead of him
with his new co-owners Patrick and Jeannie Clary, who loved him with all their hearts.
Sadly fate snatched him away before he could even start.
We miss his joy of life, his silliness, and all he could have been and done.

Yuppie started her U.S. career as a puppy in 2007, winning back to back
WB/BOS in Belton, Texas the first time she hit the U.S. show ring.
Continuing on at National events in Houston that week,
she placed 2nd in BBE classes at all 3 specialties and the Futurity class
for 9-12 months. Then at the ALAC Regional in PA in 2009 she was WB
from the BBE class for a 5 point major under Mr. Joe Walton.
After a litter, Yuppie was back in the ring and picked up several singles
in Montana in June 2011, then went on to WB/BW/BBBE at
the Twin Cities Lhasa Apso Club Specialty 8/25/11 under
Judge Ms. Chris Levy to finish with a 4 point major.
Thank you to all the Judges that have appreciated this lovely B/T Lhasa.
