The last thing they need to fret about is their deliveries. But they have been a source of frustration for some along Main Street who have seen their delivery truck drivers ticketed in recent weeks for parking illegally, something they say they must do because of a lack of proper loading zones. The insufficient number has drivers parking in the red or in center leftturn lanes, something that concerns Santa Monica police officers because the large trucks block visibility. “It’s really tight over there,” said Derek Chasin of Chasin Produce, which has clients along Main Street. “If they did put in more loading zones it would be really nice for me. This was in 1983, when Lewis was one of the first women to run coast to coast. Even at 80, Lewis climbs the famous Santa Monica stairs at least 20 times every morning. Her life started on the move, but the running came later. Born in Rhode Island, Lewis left home for Boston at 17. She got married in her early 20s and followed her now ex-husband’s jobs to Massachusetts, Florida and Indiana. “I wasn’t doing anything but the LTD station wagon, washing dishes, hanging diapers,” she said. “It was very boring. WISE & Healthy Aging partnered up with Los Angeles-based 24Hr HomeCare to establish the WISE HomeCare service to ensure that seniors receive the highest quality of care. WISE’s CEO and president, Grace Cheng Braun, said there may not be a lack of homecare agencies, but there are very few reputable ones that offer dependable services. “We found 24Hr HomeCare, whose caregivers are fully bonded employees that have cleared extensive background checks and are properly trained, to be among the best,” said Braun. Previously, 24Hr HomeCare formed a similar partnership with the Jewish Family & Children’s Services of the East Bay. According to Braun, WISE & Healthy Agency’s partnership with 24hr HomeCare was a right fit when the agency approached them. “We had the advantage of learning from our colleagues up north, who were very positive and generous in sharing their experience, and everything fell into place within three months,” said Braun. WISE HomeCare provides personal care assistance such as bathing, dressing, housekeeping, laundry, medication reminders and companionship. Additional services include installation of emergency response systems and transportation for medical appointments and errands. 24hr HomeCare’s co-founder Ryan Iwamoto said WISE HomeCare services are provided throughout the Westside and beyond. Ryan said that many long-term care insurance policies cover homecare services, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has an aid and attendance program that can cover up to $2,000 a month in reimbursement for homecare services for a veteran and surviving spouse. For more information on WISE HomeCare and its services, call the tollfree number (866)757-9473 or WISE & Healthy Aging at (310)394-9871. Tapia, who has special needs, got into a game for the first time this season as the Vikings ran out the clock. Samohi’s defense stifles Inglewood, 21-0 BY HENRY CRUMBLISH Special to the Daily Press CORSAIR FIELD After tarnishing their perfect Ocean League record last week in a nail-biting loss at Culver City, many football fans wondered if the Santa Monica High School Vikings still had what it takes to make the playoffs. However, the Vikings kept their postseason dreams and their reputation intact as they dominated Inglewood, 21-0, for 48 minutes on both sides of the ball on Friday night at Santa Monica College. The win gives Samohi football a 5-4 overall record and 3-1 mark in league. Samohi took a page out of the uncomplicated Baltimore Ravens playbook and pounded the ball hard up the middle with the run game, while playing stifling defense. The Vikings were so confident in their run game that they ran the ball 30 times before attempting a pass play. There was little to no variety in the offense, and Samohi only recorded one completion on the night. “Honestly, I’m a little concerned, I like to score points but we have to do whatever we can do, I don’t want to turn the ball over,” said Travis Clark, Samohi head coach. The bulk of Samohi’s points came from Since 1967 Quality & Value Always! Open 6am - 2:30pm Mon. - Fri. 6am - 4pm Sat. - Sun. 310-399-7892 27322 Main n St. Santaa Monica www.theomeletteparlor.com “Gorgeous garden patio, everyday!!!” the defense, which pillaged Inglewood all night long. The victory on Friday also marked the Vikings second shutout this season in league play. The biggest stop of the night came from senior Denicio Gonzalez-Drake who blocked a punt and ran it back for a touchdown, his first of the season. “This felt good because it sealed the deal for playoffs,” Gonzalez-Drake said. The Vikings’ secondary was no slouch either, as the varsity squad recorded two interceptions, including a pick returned for a touchdown by Ahmad Clayton. “That’s what happens when you have Dline pressure like that, the secondary should have opportunities,” said Clark.“The ball goes up and they have to make plays on the ball.” Friday’s decisive victory over Inglewood secured the Vikings as the second place team in the Ocean League, giving them the league’s second automatic playoff berth. The game also marked what could be the final matchup between these two schools. Due to a restructuring of the Ocean League, Samohi and Inglewood will no longer play each other. “I have nothing but respect for the program,” said Clark, who is a former Inglewood coach. “It’s unfortunate we’re not going to get to play them anymore. I’m disappointed about that.” However, Clark is proud of his current ball club who got the job done in a highstakes game. “It took me until Tuesday to get these kids over the loss to Culver City,” he said. “It’s senior night and this is the last time many of them will play on this field.” Friday was a much-needed morale boost for the Vikings who will be forced to play the exact same style next week if they hope to have success moving forward in the postseason. Issues at quarterback have forced Clark and Co. to nearly abandon the passing game. “Obviously, I’d love to throw the ball, I’m a throwing guy at heart but if we have to run the ball to be successful then, yeah, you might see a lot of it,” Clark said. Samohi’s hopes of three-peating as league champs are gone, but Clark likes his team’s chances going forward into the postseason. “We’ll go in as a second place team, we’re not afraid of anyone,” said Clark. Samohi’s next game is scheduled for Friday, at 7 p.m. at Hawthorne High School. editor@smdp.com Opinion Commentary 4 MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2013 We have you covered LETTERS TO THE EDITOR My Write Send comments to editor@smdp.com Bill Bauer Editor: I found it ironic that your Oct. 30 issue had an article about the scariness of tax bills coming out this week (”It’s scary property tax season again,” The Taxman), and also an article on firefighters making over $200k (”42 fire department members made more than $200K last year,” page 1) without having a single quote or viewpoint about how outrageous it is for Santa Monica fire fighters to be in the top 3 percent of U.S. earners. Or any data on average hours worked per week that these high income earners use to justify their pay. Or data comparing to state or national averages. Not exactly hard hitting, or even balanced, journalism. The city deserves a conversation about making our firefighters some of the wealthiest people in the country. Joel Milne Santa Monica Take to the sky for transit Editor: Ever since flying pods appeared in Popular Science magazine people have wondered if it would ever happen. Now it is happening for real and, curiously, the mainstream media seems to be ignoring the news of this great leap forward in transportation. Twenty years ago, [Douglas] Malewicki engineered a personal rapid transit system using magnetic levitation propulsion under computer control. One year ago, a test operating system was built by NASA in Menlo Park. Finally, Tel Aviv has become the first city that has agreed to build the system to alleviate its traffic problem. Once Sky Tran has been shown to be truly viable, it should spread like wildfire throughout the industrialized world because if will largely eliminate the need for automobiles and save us from a global meltdown. Pods levitated on overhead rails will speed nonstop to their destination at speeds of over 100 mph. Our awaited Expo Line could have been built for one tenth the cost, and it will be obsolete almost as soon as it is completed. Sky Tran would mean that the Central Valley light rail line should be re-examined. James Kohfeld Santa Monica Yes, in this very spot! Send comments to editor@smdp.com Physical trainer ordinance for parks is flabby and defective MANAGING EDITOR FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, CITY COUNCIL daniela@smdp.com ross@smdp.com EDITOR IN CHIEF Kevin Herrera editor@smdp.com Daniel Archuleta has wrestled with physical training classes in city parks, especially Palisades Park. Our parks have become a hot commodity for athletic trainers who charge to conduct commercial fitness classes — ranging from “new mommies” to martial arts. Palisades Park has become so popular that complaints from users about overbearing professional trainers have dramatically increased. Ocean Avenue residents complain that early morning noise generated by training activity wakes them up and disturbs their peace. On Oct. 8, council took its first crack at an ordinance to regulate or terminate the whole practice. Its intention was to establish a one-year pilot program to allow private training in only certain park areas, require permits for trainers and limit them to 20, restrict groups to 15 participants or less and set hours for professional training, among other measures. On Oct. 22, during the second reading of the ordinance, Mayor Pam O’Connor and council members Kevin McKeown, Ted Winterer and Gleam Davis supported the ordinance. Councilmen Tony Vazquez and Bob Holbrook opposed it. Mayor Pro Tem Terry O’Day was absent. The ordinance itself is riddled with errors, omissions and loopholes. It may make the whole problem of allowing professional trainers in the parks even more onerous. It appears that nobody on City Council or staff bothered to read it before it was voted on. I was tipped off about the ordinance’s problems by attorney Stanley Epstein. Yep, the very Stanley Epstein who recently sued City Hall on the way it mishandled parking ticket appeals and won. The new ordinance becomes effective on Nov. 21. It states (4.55.030 (a)) that a city permit is required to train clients. But, they will not be issued, by lottery or otherwise, until Jan 1. What happens in the period from Nov. 21 to Jan. 1? Is City Hall going to enforce regulations and stop all group training for six weeks? Section 4.55.030(b) gives the Director of Community and Cultural Affairs (currently Karen Ginsberg) authority to “promulgate regulations implementing this Section, addressing the authorization system, permit types, requirements and methods of issuance, indemnification and proof of insurance, limits on locations, hours and group size restriction and other regulations as needed, to implement this authorization system ...” but doesn’t require the “Director” to do so. Most importantly, there’s nothing in the ordinance itself limiting the number of permits and no authority is provided to Ginsberg to limit them either. Therefore, City Hall would be acting illegally if any limit were imposed, or lottery held. For example, 35 trainers apply for a permit and 20 are granted. The remaining 15 trainers could each bring suit (or a class action) requesting an injunction and compensation for loss of income. I wonder if City Attorney Marsha Moutrie realizes that taxpayers will pay damages and expenses arising out of the sloppy drafting of the ordinance. Training hours (beginning 6 a.m. versus 8 a.m., for example) and group size are also at the whim of the Director of Cultural and Community Services and not specified in the ordinance. Another violation of council and public wishes is in Section 4.55.130, which bars exercise equipment weighing more than 25 pounds but requires the director to authorize the use of heavier equipment unless she/he can prove such equipment will damage public property. If the director can’t, heavier athletic equipment must be permitted, even though there was no council discussion whatsoever about allowing equipment exceeding 25 pounds. Amplification, public address systems, whistles, bullhorns and boom-boxes are all to be prohibited but there’s nothing in the ordinance about them and the director has no express or implied power to regulate their use There’s nothing in the ordinance that gives City Hall the authority to assess damage and collect reimbursement for repairs and investigative costs except by bringing a separate criminal action to recoup these monies resulting from destruction or defacing of park foliage or facilities. Other unresolved issues include who is issued the permit? The trainer? The trainer’s assistants? If a class is conducted by a corporation or franchisee, who obtains the permit — the corporation or trainer? All these mistakes can be corrected easily by speedy ordinance amendments, but will City Hall leaders want to reopen this fiasco and deal further with a very unhappy citizenry? I doubt it. I e-mailed Karen Ginsberg for a response and she replied, “There is no reason to believe that the rules which are currently being finalized would stray from the council directions.” While Ginsberg may do the right thing, there’s nothing preventing future directors from changing the rules. Moreover, her response was incomplete and doesn’t change any of the conclusions I’ve raised. It appears that the whole subject of how our parks are used has been met with indifference and shoddy work. For as much as we all pay for municipal government, we’re sure not getting our money’s worth. Worse yet, the people we elect to govern us on City Council are either asleep at the wheel or don’t give a damn. Councilman Winterer, for example, has been taking flak from all the neighborhood groups who vigorously oppose “selling out” our parks to commercial users. After receiving much support from these organizations in last fall’s election, he cast the deciding vote against excluding professional training from Palisades Park. Neighborhood activists view his action as a big slap in the face and it could cost him their backing in the future. What a mess. Bill can be reached at mr.bilbau@gmail.com YOUR OPINION MATTERS! Under the “Fresh From Florida” marketing campaign offered by the state’s agriculture officials to stores and consumers, people are encouraged to buy things that are grown and raised in the Sunshine State. Alligator, tomatoes and, of course, oranges are on the list. One thing isn’t highlighted: Florida beef. That’s because, unlike many other states, it’s nearly impossible to buy beef that’s been born, raised, slaughtered and processed in Florida — even though it was the first state to have large-scale cattle ranches. There are nearly 1 million head of calves and cattle in Florida and the industry contributes about $2 billion to the state’s economy. Seven of the nation’s 25 largest cattle ranches are in Florida, according to the Florida Beef Council. Most calves are born and raised here, but are finished and processed in states like Texas or Oklahoma, as there’s only one large slaughterhouse in Florida at the moment. Despite ranking 10th nationally in the number of cattle, Florida ships the majority of them — 700,000 feeder calves — to other states. Cattle ranchers who realize there’s a demand for locally grown meat have asked agriculture officials for a designation. But before the likely tag can be applied, the state must first decide what, exactly, Florida beef is. Does the cow have to spend its entire life in Florida? “Adding value to Florida beef through the Fresh From Florida brand is something we are excited about,” said state agriculture commissioner Adam Putnam, a fifth-generation Floridian from a cattle-ranching family. The ranchers’ quest to be included on the “Fresh From Florida” list is a testament to how popular local food has become — and because ranchers know it’s more sustainable and cheaper to keep an animal in state. Small farms, farmers markets and specialty food makers have emerged nationwide, and Florida is no different. “It’s a niche that I believe people will respond to,” said Don Quincey, a cattle rancher. During the winter months, it’s easy to find plenty of local veggies and fruits here. But cattle ranchers say that it will take a little for them while to bring local farm-tofork beef to the public. “Let’s face it. If went into the supermarket and you saw ‘Fresh from Mexico,’ ‘Fresh from Arizona’ and ‘Fresh from Florida,’ and you’re in Florida, which one would you buy?” said Florida rancher Tom Harper. Over the centuries, cattle have thrived in Florida, freely grazing the swampland and eating wild oranges and scrub brush — a scenario that would make any locavore drool. North America’s first cattle were brought in 1591 by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. At one point in the mid-17th century, more than 20,000 head of Spanish cattle were counted in a tax collectors’ census. These cattle tolerated the heat and were freeranging; known as “Cracker Cattle,” they are leaner than other breeds and also more ornery. But by the 1960s, the number of Cracker Cattle had greatly diminished because of rapid development. Florida’s heat and humidity aren’t conducive for large-scale feedlots of less hardy cattle like those found in Midwestern states like Texas and Oklahoma. And with the rise of corn-finishing cattle on the feedlots, Florida was out of luck — while there’s lots of grass in Florida for weaned calves, the state doesn’t grow much corn. “We didn’t have any options other than to send our cattle west to be fed,” said Harper, who owns a purebred Angus breeding operation in north-central Florida, near Gainesville. Quincey said he and a few other Florida ranchers have been able to work around the lack of options by building feedlots and facilities to hold a grain mix for the cattle. He has 1,000 head of cattle he hopes will soon get the “Fresh From Florida” label. Many are born and raised on his Chiefland ranch near Gainesville, then weaned, preconditioned and moved onto a finishing feed operation on the same property. “We save a lot of fuel by not having to truck this animal all over the United States,” he said, adding he sells some cattle and ships others for finishing out of state. Another hurdle for the state’s ranchers: There’s only one large slaughterhouse in Florida that can handle 150 head a week, and a handful of smaller ones, like Quincey’s. Harper said a second slaughterhouse will open soon near Gainesville, which is the region where many of the state’s cattle are located. It will process about 300 head of cattle a week. It would be cheaper for farmers if they could breed, raise, finish and slaughter their cows in Florida, he said. “Just the cost to send them out west averages about $60-$65 a head,” he said. “If we just eliminated extra freight, we would save money. Add that with the fact that people may prefer locally grown beef.” FINDING A NEW DENTIST IS TOUGH!!! E. Mervyn Kline Philadelphia, Pa. The interior of your car may seem like a safe haven from air pollution, but it may actually be quite the opposite. Chemicals emanating from the steering wheel, dashboard, armrests and seats mix with the airborne pollution being generated under the hood to form a witch’s brew of toxins for those riding inside. “Research shows that vehicle interiors contain a unique cocktail of hundreds of toxic chemicals that off-gas in small, confined spaces,” says Jeff Gearhart of the Ecology Center, a Michigan-based non-profit. The extreme air temperatures inside cars on sunny days can increase the concentration of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and break other chemicals down into more toxic constituents. Some of the worst offenders include airborne bromine, chlorine, lead and other heavy metals. “Since these chemicals are not regulated, consumers have no way of knowing the dangers they face,” adds Gearhart. Exhaust fumes also find their way into the passenger cabins of many cars. The International Center for Technology Assessment (ICTA) found that concentrations of carbon monoxide (a noxious byproduct of internal combustion known to cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and fatigue as well as being a major asthma trigger) may be 10 times higher inside any given car than outdoors along the roadside. ICTA added that in light of the fact that the average American spends an hour and a half driving around each day, in-car air pollution may pose “one of the greatest modern threats to human health.” To help consumers minimize their exposure, the Ecology Center released the fourth version of its Consumer Guide to Toxic Chemicals in Cars in 2012, comparing over 200 different cars across the 2010 and 2011 model years. Those scoring the most kudos in regard to interior air quality include the Honda Civic, Toyota Prius and Honda CR-Z. The Civic scored first by being free of bromine-based flame retardants (BFRs) in interior components, utilizing polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-free interior fabrics and trim, and having low levels of heavy metals. Meanwhile, pulling up the rear were Mitsubishi’s Outlander Sport, the Chrysler 200 SC and the Kia Soul. The Outlander finished in last place due to its use of BFRS as well as antimony-based flame retardants in its interior, chromium treated leather components and excessive amounts of lead in seating materials. “The good news is overall vehicle ratings are improving,” reports the Ecology Center, adding that the top performers have gotten rid of BFRs and PVC altogether in their interiors. “Today, 17 percent of new vehicles have PVC-free interiors and 60 percent are produced without BFRs.” Consumers can check on their late model car by steering their web browser to the HealthyStuff.org website, the Ecology Center’s free online resource for consumer information. While environmental and public health groups are working to try to get automakers to clean up their interiors, individuals can reduce their exposure by parking in the shade, using interior sun reflectors to keep temperatures down inside the car and rolling down the windows to let the fresh air in. Guys aren’t just parking there for the hell of it. They have nowhere else to go.” City officials have heard the complaints and are working to rectify the problem. Sam Morrissey, City Hall’s lead traffic engineer, told the Daily Press that plans are in the works to add 20 commercial loading zones, increasing the number to 30 along Main Street. City officials have in the last year added roughly 40 of those zones in Downtown to address demand. The effort comes after city officials sent a warning letter in August and July of last year to businesses informing them of the parking restrictions, including bans on parking in red zones or in front of a curb ramp, and within crosswalks. The letter also warned drivers who use parking meters to make sure to pay or risk getting a ticket. “We [sent the letter] with the intent to initiate conversations with merchants to see where we need more loading zones,” Morrissey said. “We’ve added more zones, primarily in Downtown, but we’ve been working since last summer with Main Street.” And therein lies the problem for some business owners, said Gary Gordon, executive director of the Main Street Business Improvement Association. Merchants can’t understand why it has taken so long to get the loading zones added. “These little things make a big difference in the lives of businesses,” Gordon said. “There’s really no legal places for [delivery drivers] to park.” Morrissey admits it has been a “relatively long process,” but that’s because there are many different uses on the street and various requirements. Some businesses need parking earlier in the mornings for customers, while others prefer to have deliveries later in the day, such as restaurants and bars. Morrissey went from parking meter to parking meter from the southern city limits to Pico Boulevard with Gordon to speak with merchants about their needs. It became more complicated when new taxi zones were added. “I think we’ve gotten past that now,” Morrissey said. “We’ve ordered a bunch of new signs for the meters and side streets and we are going to add many commercial loading zones. We’re hoping to have the signs in the next couple of weeks. “We don’t want to stomp on businesses. As much as we can accommodate their needs, we try to.” Morrissey said there is a balance that needs to be struck. But in the end it all comes down to safety. Santa Monica Police Lt. Jay Trisler, who manages the Traffic Enforcement Unit, said officers do have discretion when it comes to issuing tickets. Many write drivers up because the illegal activity is egregious and dangerous to pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers. The biggest concern is obstructing views. “If people complain, we address those issues,” Trisler said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s Montana Avenue, Wilshire, Santa Monica or Main Street. We enforce the rules equally throughout the city.” That’s not the case, Gordon said. He’s heard from business owners who said enforcement is spotty. Sometimes tickets are issued and other times they are not, creating a lack of consistency. Chasin echoed that. “We never get ticketed by parking enforcement,” he said. “But we’ve gotten several from police officers. So it’s luck of the draw. … We have to figure something out.” kevinh@smdp.com Local Visit us online at www.smdp.com MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2013 9 10 MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2013 ADVERTISEMENT Local MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2013 Visit us online at www.smdp.com CP FROM PAGE 1 ery for many years, even attempting suicide, before she found running In Boston, when a police officer suggested she try it, she scoffed. “Then get fat,” he responded. “Next thing I knew I was huffing and puffing on the high school track,” Lewis said. “I put the kids in the center and I’m running around. I’ve been running ever since.” Lewis quit drinking in 1971, around the time she started running. “When I would first go out in the sunshine, my eyes would tear up,” she said. “It seems simple: I love the outdoors. That’s when I started to go crazy. There’s a whole world out here!” The family moved to Santa Monica, where she took a jogging class at Santa Monica College. The teacher signed her up for a marathon, putting down his own money. She ran, begrudgingly, because he paid and ended up with a trophy. “After that I became a marathon junkie,” she said. “I can’t give you a count. I was like an addict. I became a running addict.” The sun and the outdoors brought her to life. She climbed mountains: the Alps, Pyrenees, Sierra Nevadas. She ran 100-mile races. Then across the country in 75 days, averaging more than 40 miles a day. For many years, she was the fastest woman to cross the states on foot. One of her five sons, Robert Lewis, said that the outdoors is key for her. “We’d always go camping with her at Big Sur,” he said. “Hiking, a lot of hiking. She was always the fastest on the hike so if we didn’t keep up we were in trouble because she was always a good 20 yards ahead of us.” Topping Mt. Everest is the only challenge Lewis regrets not trying. (“Maybe you should write this in the article: If anyone will sponsor me, I’m off!”) At around 70 years old she started to feel comfortable with her accomplishments. She’s mellowed. “I reached the point where, I had certain things under my belt,” she said.“I felt first that what motivated me was that I never thought I measured up. There’s always somebody who’s better, faster, no matter what you’ve done. Now I’m 80, it’s OK. I’ll share this thing!” She also thinks back to the life or death moments, she said. Like when she was freezing, overcome with altitude sickness, and starting to enjoy the euphoria of near death close to Mt. Whitney’s peak. “I was hallucinating, thinking of my kids, and I got to get back to my kids, and I never forgot those moments there where I just stood there and said, ‘I can’t feel my hands. I can’t feel my feet,’” she said. “I almost felt euphoric. I wasn’t in pain. It was actually euphoric. I thought, what a way to go.” She told her hiking partner to go on without her. She paused for a long time. “But the sun was rising,” she said. “And at this point, I don’t know, I wish I could have put all that down on a piece of paper; all the thoughts that went through my head.” Out of fear that she would freeze but survive — that she’d lose her hands and feet — she decided she had to walk on. In a moment of consciousness, she chose to preserve her ability to interact with the world — the hands that allow her to literally touch the world around her — over euphoria and death. “So at that point, I could actually look down and see the little red tent on the base camp,” she said. “It was a little dot and I could see it.” For many, the red dot would have served as a beacon: the easy route back to the rest of one’s life. “But not Natalie,” she said, laughing. “She had to go to the top.” dave@smdp.com Email QLINE@SMDP.COM. Gary Stevens had never won the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic in his long career. Kathy Ritvo came close a year ago with Mucho Macho Man only to settle for second. The veteran jockey and the trainer who got another chance at life after a heart transplant in 2008 teamed up with the hardknocking horse to win by a whisker Saturday. Mucho Macho Man edged Will Take Charge in a photo finish decided by a nose, making Ritvo the first female trainer to win North America’s richest race at a Breeders’ Cup that began tragically with the death of a horse in the first race. “I didn’t know the photo was as close as it was,” said Stevens, who was 0-for-14 in the Classic. Stevens capped his comeback at 50 in stellar fashion, surviving a photo finish in the Classic after winning the $2 million Distaff with Beholder on Friday for a sweep of the biggest races at the two-day world championships at Santa Anita. Ritvo became the fifth female trainer to win a Breeders’ Cup race and got to celebrate a year after seeing Mucho Macho Man finish second by a half-length to winner Fort Larned. “Thrilling,” she said. First, though, Ritvo had to sweat out the results. Mucho Macho Man stretched his neck to hold off Will Take Charge, trained by 78year-old Hall of Famer D. Wayne Lukas. “I was just hoping he got it,” Ritvo said. “When I saw Gary shake his stick, I was confident. He ran a fantastic race.” Game On Dude, the 8-5 favorite who was 5-0 this year, finished ninth on his home track for trainer Bob Baffert and co-owner Joe Torre, the retired Dodgers and Yankees manager. Baffert had an up-and-down day. His filly, Secret Compass, broke her leg in the opening Juvenile Fillies race and had to be euthanized. Then he won two races before Game On Dude lost as the favorite for the second straight year. “When I saw him going real fast on the backstretch, I knew I was in trouble,” he said. “Then when Mike (Smith) asked him, there was nothing there. You always feel bad when you get beat, but I feel worse for the horse.” Fort Larned wound up fourth. Mucho Macho Man ran 1 ? miles in 2:00.72 and paid $10, $4.60 and $3.60 as the 4-1 second choice. The victory likely earned him champion older male honors and may get him consideration for Horse of the Year honors, which Game On Dude could have wrapped up with a win. Current Horse of the Year Wise Dan repeated in the $2 million Mile, winning by three-quarters of a length under Jose Lezcano, a late replacement for Velazquez. He paid $3.60 to win as the 4-5 favorite. Will Take Charge returned $7.20 and $4.80. “It’s just a heartbreak that he lost,” said Lukas, who won his only Classic in 1999 with Cat Thief. “He did everything right. The jump after the wire we got him.” Declaration of War was another head back in third and paid $4.80 to show. Stevens and Mucho Macho Man started moving on the outside around the stretch turn and went after the leaders. They got in front coming out of the turn for home, with Stevens urging the 5-year-old Mucho Macho Man on with a right-handed whip. “They give me a free roll around the far turn,” he said. “I think that might have been the winning move.” Ritvo, a 44-year-old mother of two, waited six months for a new heart in 2008. Mucho Macho Man first put her in the national spotlight two years ago when he ran in all three Triple Crown races, including third in the Kentucky Derby. “Kathy Ritvo is one of the most underrated trainers in the thoroughbred industry,” said Finn Green, racing manager for Mucho Macho Man’s owners Dean and Patti Reeves. Lukas put Stevens on Oxbow in the Preakness in May, and they won. “Gary is riding in a zone,” the trainer said. “I think we jump-started him in the Preakness pretty good.” Last Gunfighter was fifth, followed by Palace Malice, Paynter (trained by Baffert), Flat Out, Game On Dude, Moreno and Planteur. The 30th Breeders’ Cup got off to a troubling start, with a rare disqualification in the opening race and Secret Compass euthanized because of a broken leg. The $2 million Juvenile Fillies went from strange to tragic over several minutes. The DQ was announced after a green screen went up in a spot approaching the final turn to shield injured Secret Compass from the crowd. “When you lose a horse like that, it just took all the wind out of our sails,” Baffert said. “I’ve never had something like that happen on a big day. We’re all still in shock.” John Velazquez, who rode Secret Compass, had emergency surgery to remove his spleen after internal bleeding was discovered shortly before he was to be released from a Pasadena hospital. Ria Antonia finished second but was declared the winner of the 1 1/16-mile race after She’s a Tiger was disqualified by the stewards. They ruled that She’s a Tiger and Stevens drifted out late, bumped Ria Antonia and Javier Castellano, slowing her momentum. It was the first DQ of a winner since the inaugural 1984 Juvenile Fillies race in which Fran’s Valentine won and later was placed 10th. “This is heartbreaking,” said Jeff Bonde, who trains She’s a Tiger. Sent off at 32-1 odds, Ria Antonia paid $66.60, $29.80 and $17.40. The winning time was 1:43.02 and the margin was a nose. She’s a Tiger returned $6.40 and $4.80. Rosalind paid $6.80 to show. Running third at the time, Secret Compass’ front legs collapsed, slamming Velazquez hard into the dirt. Baffert’s 2-yearold filly was euthanized after sustaining a lateral condylar fracture, according to oncall veterinarian Dr. Wayne McIlwraith. “It is the worst type of injury we get, unfortunately,” he said. Velazquez was to ride in all nine Breeders’ Cup races, but he was replaced by other jockeys. Baffert was smiling later when 10-1 shot New Year’s Day rallied on the rail to win the $2 million Juvenile by 1 ? lengths. The colt paid $23 to win, with jockey Martin Garcia earning his first Cup victory. But the trainer’s emotions were raw. “Just the win is exciting, but in the back of my mind, I’m thinking about that filly,” he said. Baffert and Garcia also teamed to win the $1.5 million Sprint by a neck with Secret Circle. Baffert earned his third win in the Juvenile, whose winner is typically tagged as the early Kentucky Derby favorite. His other entry, Tap It Rich, finished fifth. Havana, the 5-2 favorite trained by Todd Pletcher, was second. Strong Mandate, trained by Lukas, was third. After the early drama, 3-2 favorite Dank restored order by winning the $2 million Filly & Mare Turf by a half-length over Romantica. Ridden by Ryan Moore, Dank ran 1 ? miles in 1:58.73 and paid $5, $3.40 and $2.80. Another favorite, 3-1 Groupie Doll, won the $1 million Filly & Mare Sprint for the second straight year by a half-length. Mizdirection defended her title in the $1 million Turf Sprint for co-owner Jim Rome, the sports talk host. She ran 6 furlongs in 1:12.25 under Smith.
