He lived all his life in the village of Fordham, Cambridgeshire. It was his wife, Marion, who started him collecting when she brought back a single toy from her native Scotland as a gift. From then on, Rodney and Marion indulged their interest with a passion as they regularly visited toy fairs, swap meets, steam rallies and toy auctions buying a diverse range of toys but with a strong liking especially for tinplate toys. When Marion died 17 years ago some of the spark went from Rodney's life and he suffered from increasingly poor health, culminating in a stroke. However, he still found pleasure in increasing his toy collection and his friend Tony would travel from his home in Essex to take Rodney regularly to various toy events. Rodney rarely sold any of his toys and the family would always exclaim after his latest purchases "but Rodney, where are you going to put them all!" but he always managed somehow to find space. Rodney would be proud to have this auction day and catalogue dedicated to him and his toy collection. It is surely a fitting epitaph. 530 – Dinky Toys Leyland Octopus with Chains.
