For Sale President's Page David Hoover Well, Reno is finally upon us again.I hope that everyone is gearing up for some great racing this year. In the postNemesis era, the Gold field will really be wide open. For the first time in almost a decade, quite a few planes can contend for the Gold Championship. A new Formula One Champion will finally be crowned. It should be very exciting for the spectators. I have heaxd from Anita that Aeroshell and Unison will be providing prizes again this year for Formula One. A lot of goodies were given away last year. Almost half of the pilots won something. Please thank their representatives when you see them. Remember to leave room on your plane for stickers if you plan to use their products. Elections will be coming up again this year for various Board of Director positions. All eligible members need to take the time and vote. Strong leadership is crucial to the success of our organization. The annual meeting will be on Wednesday, September 13th. The time and location will be posted in the Formula One hangar beforehand. Everyone should plan to attend. This is the only time that all the Directors are in the same place at the same time. THANKS to our SPONSORS Aeroshell Paul Royko Equilon Enterprises LLC # iff* ,$drffi ffid& Ifyou have any question or suggestions, this will be the time to discuss them. Tech inspection will start again on Saturday. The course will be available on Sunday for practice only. Rookies and pilot re-quals should plan to fly on Sunday. Quali&ing will be the usual Monday through Wednesday, except that we will not have the afternoon session available on Wednesday. The Blue Angels will be using that time. Since we do not have a full field again this year, it looks like we will have a Gold and Silver class only. Everyone will get to fly three heat races plus one final. I have mentioned this before, but if any problems or questions come up during the week that concem RARA (there's going to be a few) please come to me first to discuss it, and I will approach the proper individual within RARA . Remember that cool heads prevail. On a sad note, Gary Dalleske's wife Barbara passed away peacefully on August 3'd after a long illness. On behalf of Formula One, I want to offer our condolences to Gary. Barbara will be truly missed. I want to thank Bill Rogers for his outstanding efforts in putting the Formula Forum together. Our newsletter is by far the best of all the Air Racing organizations. Bill is always looking for good material and pictures to publish, and I encourage any member to contact him if they want something to appear in the Forum. lr E-ff !tfsEE&,#f*t Peter Bacon and Jim Melvin Unison lndustries Let's all have a fast and safe race this year. Best Regards, David FORMUI.II FORUM, SEPTEMBER 2OOO Reno Parade Ray Sherwood The Reno Rodeo Parade was, in my opinion, a huge success but the real proof of the puddin was the Third Place plaque that I received in the mail from the parade contest committee. That's not bad for a first out of the chute effort, and I do have bigger and better plans for next year's entry. You only have to look at the reaction ofthe spectators to seeing Tony Wright, Jr. standing next to "Midnight Oil", to realize the benefit of participating in a display like this. We were stopped at the Main Parade reviewing stand for a lengthy period of time while the Announcer gave the large crowd a detailed account of IFl's history and contribution to the National Air Races at Reno. A proud moment for all Formula One participants and conffibutors. A special thanks goes out for a lot of folks who helped pull this off. Let's start with Larry Spitale from RARA who loaned us his flatbed trailer to haul Midnight Oil through the parade. I owe him a Qt. Of Early Times, and when I collect a few more cola cans I will have enough to do the purchase. Thaxks to Tony Wright, Sr. for flying the plane in from Auburn and helping make our entry a success by walking with the airplane through the parade route and helping distribute the gliders and wings imprinted with the IFl logo. Thanks to Tony Wright, Jr. for his hard work in getting everything ready and working the crowd with waves and smiles posed next to that pretty Black Afuplane through the parade route. And also thanks for bringing those two pretty and young ladies whom worked like troopers handing out IFl goodies. Thanks to Bev (my bride) for working the crowd by giving out our goodies and going to the back of the crowd to give to those who could not get to the front. Thanks go out also to David Hoover for having the vision to see the benefit this project has for IF1. You're a good man David Hoover artd areal asset to our organization, your support and encorragement is appreciated. The Plaque will be on display in our IF1 Of{ice at Reno 2000. o ? q) a q) FORMUILI FORAM, SEPTEMBER 2OOO Tech John Tips Housley Safety and Carbon Monoxide Race planes have a checkered history when it comes to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. In 1930, Marine Captain Arthur Page led the Thompson Trophy race for 17 of the planned 20 laps in his Curtis Hawk before rolling inverted and crashing with CO poisoning presumed to be the cause. More recently, a Formula V crash in 1996 was found to have been caused bv CO poisoning. Cassutts (and other Formula 1 aircraft) have a reputation for turning CO indicators black, particularly during ground operation. CO cafl enter the cockpit through gaps at the wing/ fuselage joint, holes in the frewall, or through openings in the fuselage where the rudder cables exit (look at the exhaust stains after a few flights without cleaning your plane). I used an AIM 935 sensitive monitor (shown above) to quantit/ the cockpit environment and breathing air (I wear an oxygen mask supplied with air from a fitting on the right side of the canopy) CO levels in Race 43 as well as another race plane recently. The results of rny ground and flight tests are provided below: Ground Operation: You might think that the prop wash would blow all the CO away but that's not what I found. Immediately after starting the engine, the CO levels jumped to 30-100 ppm (and the alarm was sounding) on Race 43. To put this into perspective, the EPA calls for a health hazard alert when the outdoor CO level rises above 9 ppm for an extended period of time and the maximum workplace CO level (OSHA) has ranged from 35-50 ppm. You might be able to sweep a floor safely in a 50 ppm CO environment, but I prefer a lot lower level (like 0) when racing. The ground CO levels on another race arcraft I flew recently pegged the monitor at 150 ppm at idle. FORMALA FORAM, SEPTEMBER 2OOO -',1'.''' a. 'lrKF 3ry Flight Operation: Once airborne and with the cockpit vent open, the Race 43 CO levels quickly decreased to 9-15 ppm. Each time the CO level rose to 10 ppm, the alarm would sound and was always quite audible. I wear ear inserls which do an excellentjob of attenuating sound, plus a helmet which cuts noise, and the alarm was still very evident above the engine noise even with the monitor strapped to my leg. The CO readings were not affected by closing the vent. On the other race akcraft. mentioned above, the in-flight CO readings remained at frrll-scale values. Fresh Air System: I modified my fresh air supply system to force all the breathing air to pass through a tralsparent plenum containing the CO monitor. This test indicated that my "fresh" air was free of measurable CO. Recommendations: The IF1 Tech committee will have several sensitive CO monitors available for our use during the Reno races. Please take this fiee opportunity to measure yorrr own cockpit environment and if necessary, resolve a CO problem before it diminishes your mental acuity or worse, causes an accident. If you would like to purchase your owrr monitor, they are available through Aeromedix at 1-888362-7123 or on the web at http: I I aeromedix. com. Prices may vary due to specials, but are g,pically $67$75 and the units will last up to 5 years. Cape Girardeau Race Report F1 ESCAPES TO CAPE Bill Rogers Cape Girardeau is a thriving little city about 100 miles south of St. Louis on the Mississippi, with a population of 35,000. Established in 1733, it was settled by Spanish immigrants and flourished on the river trade and later the railroad. July 6-9, 2000 The helpful airport staff at Cape Girardeau, led by Airport Managerl Show Boss, Bruce Loy, had surveyed the course for us and installing pylons at these points was relatively straight forward except the one in the middle of a 10 foot high comfield. This was like hacking your way through the jungle. o (] oo o -fla.e}ru' ffirf,x Crews started to show up on Thursday: Flip Miller who rode his Harley from North Dakota, the Rogers who drove from CA via IL and fuck Gritters flew in from Iowa with his Cassutt ready for static display. Biplare racer, Charley Greer was next, towing his ex-Gilbert Shadow 1950 miles from San Diego. Dan Gilbert, the Race Director ard primary organizer, with Ken Kaiser was next. Towards evening, George Budde rolled in with his two planes, the pylons, and pilot Ray Sherwood. Brother Bobby anived overnight with his trusty #10, El Bandito in the back of the bus. Weather each day was in the high 80's, with high humidity and a rain shower on Thursday precluded putting up pylons. We recovered bright and early Friday to install George's excellent pylons. These are made of 3" and smaller PVC tubes that telescope inside each other, held apart with hose clamps and braced with 4 guy ropes. Pat Budde had made large Red,/White flags for the top. See cover photo. FORMULlI FORUM, SEPTEMBER 2OOO We used the F.A-A ILS antenna for #1; Pylon 6 was near the other end of the runway and had to be laid down for safety reasons; this operation took only a few seconds with two people. Pylon Crew: Dan Gilbert, Ken Kaiser, Bill Rogers (Announcer), Rick Gritters, Anita Infante (Promotions), Flip Miller, and 2 Gape guys. In the middle of this operation, the Ops Crew of Roger Sturgess (Timing), Jeff Gurur (Ops and Starter) and Mark Johnson (Home Flagger), showed up to help. Charlie Greer had a mag problem which he and Crewchief Deb Murphy were able to fix. Friday Practice: Charlie Greer did pilot quals in the AM and a local farmer requested that we move pylons away from his fatrl;r a little, so we tightened up pylons 2 and,3 to comply on Saturday morning prior to racing. This gave us a slightly egg-shaped course of 2.99 miles. John Housley flew in from St. Louis at lunch time and did several laps prior to landing, entertaining the lunch time crowd at the airport restaurant. The official qualifying period from 4:005:00 PM was used by Bobby Budde for requal and Ray Sherwood n#19. George Budde came out, but tumed around and went back. The Friday evening hangar dance for participants and the public" required us to move to ahanger at the far end of the airport. We returned on Saturday morning to the Lipps hanger. Free lunch was provided both Saturday and Sunday which was great if you like BBQ pork: pork chop, pork ribs, shredded pork, etc. SaturdayRace-8Laps Bobby Budde and Ray Sherwood in George Budde's #19 lined up in front with John Housley in the middle and the faster planes of George and Charlie Greer in back. After a slight hold for a helicopter on the course, Ray jumped to a good staft with Bobby behind. Charlie had made it past John by the end of Lap 1, with George in last. During the second lap Bobby pulled up with the engine cutting out and running rough, and John recaptured second in the confirsion. George then made his move and passed everyone to take the point and Charlie gave chase, getting by Ray on Lap 4. The second half was two battles - one for the lead which Charlie won from George at the line and in the back John passed Ray for third. 39 Charlie Greer, San Diego Gilbert DG-1, 2 "Shadow" George Budde, Midwest SundayRace-8Laps Bobby pulled his crippled plane out into the crowd where it attracted plenty of attention. The remaining four lined up in reverse again with John now in the front row with Ray. Ray repeated his takeoff performance with John behind, and they proceeded to scrap for 3 laps until John took the lead, which he held till Lap 6. In back, Charlie got the jump on George, and they put on a good show for a few laps until they came or Ray at Lap 4. Charlie made it by #19 on Lap 5, arrd George did the same the next time by. In an exciting finish they both swept by John to take frst and second. 39 Charlie Greer, San Diego 227.45 George Budde, Midwest Cty 223.66 43 John Housley, Chesterfield 216.01 19 Ray Sherwood, Pleasant Hill; 209.89 2 In all a good airshow with plenty ofjets, dragster runs, 'WWT, good race demo. This all came about after hearing from David Hoover how inundated he was in 1999, being the only "IP" and aircraft combination. So for the 2000 seminar, I stepped up and volunteered my services and RV-4 to help David. I was honored when both he and RARA approved. This was truly exciting for me, as I wanted to share my knowledge and enthusiasm along with David. This year David and I were fortunate to have two very talented "veteran race pilots" returning from "in-active duty". They were Hep Porter and Bobby Budde. They brought much to the table with their combined diversity in lnternational Formula One. David and I wish to extend a warn "ttlarks" for all their valuable input and assistance, and as a bonus... They were a delight to fly with! a racer. After thaf the typical weather briefand class course schedules, we all broke offinto our individual groups. David had ar outline prepared that was very through. It touched the basics from A to Z that we all deal with when racing. A1l in all, just a super valuable experience. A1l pilots commended the training as an experience they wanted and needed. RARA was utmost professional and accommodating. Daryl Greenameyer stood up in the final briefing and said, "prior to attending, I thought this would all be a waste of time. How wrong I was, as I have learned so much more and realize we have elevated into a new, modern era of pylon racing." The only untoward incident occurred when Tony kight, Jr lost control on landing and left the runway. Race #26 flipped in the final stages and Tony Our day began with a general briefing. There were guest speakers covering various racing topics and the mind set of tweaked his back. I look forward to June 2001 with David and hopefully another 812 new, up and coming (or veteran) race pilots!
