Mayberry Solar Farm Holds Grand Opening Ceremony and Reception
Tuesday October 10, 2011 was a historic day in Mount Airy with the grand opening of the Mayberry Solar
Farm. City, County, State and Federal Elected Officials along with Chamber Members and hundreds of
guests attended the ceremony at the solar farm site and reception that was held at Old North State Winery.
The 1.2 mega watt solar farm located on six acres of land that serves as a buffer for the City’s wastewater
treatment plant was the site for the grand opening ceremony.
In partnership with the City of Mount Airy, Joel Olsen with O2 Energies developed Mayberry Solar Farm the
first project of this kind in Surry County. Mayberry Solar Farm will generate enough power to offset the
electricity usage of 150 average homes. Duke Energy is buying the electricity and NC Municipal Power
Agency 1 is buying the renewable energy credits. Creating work for the local community was a main focus of O2 Energies’ business strategy. Contractors for
site clearing, site preparation, training, shipping, staging, construction, electrical work and site leasing were
all sourced locally from Surry County which created work for more than 100 individuals. Financing was
provided by Mount Airy-based Surrey Bank & Trust.
The Mayberry Solar Farm will be a positive tool in future economic development plans and provide a
platform for additional growth in the renewable energy industry in our city.

JEEM Farms Hosts Chamber Business
After Hours Event
JEEM Farms held a Business After Hours on October 27, 2011
at 129 Quesinberry Road in Pinnacle, NC on Thursday
October 27, 2011. Over twenty five Chamber Members, friends
and family attended the event which featured delicious dishes
made from JEEM Farms tomatoes grown in greenhouses.
JEEM Farms Owners, Michelle and Justin McKinney had
transformed their garage into a lovely fall dining hall complete
with tomato themed table decorations. Guests were treated to
a hayride that took everyone to the greenhouses to see the plants and learn about the farming
techniques.
JEEM Farms opened in June 2010 and is a family owned greenhouse operation producing “offseason”
tomatoes from October until June. The JEEM Farms tomatoes were juicy, meaty and incredibly tasty,
and best of all, they are chemical free… grown the way nature intended them to be. JEEM Farms uses
sustainable farming techniques and other organic methods, so customers can rest assured the produce
is completely safe and is 100% satisfaction guaranteed.
JEEM stands for Justin, Emery, Everett, and Michelle; the owners and their twin sons. Even though the
business has the name JEEM Farms, Michelle says the farm would not exist without the help of her dad,
Larry Masten, who talks to the plants and gives them the support they need to thrive!
JEEM Farms has 1100 plants that should produce 20,000 pounds of “offseason” tomatoes in three
different varieties available now through June. The tomatoes dishes we tasted at the event and the
tomatoes we brought home with us to eat were better than delicious…. they were extraordinary! If you
love tomatoes and are not satisfied with the quality you find at the local grocery stores you should try
JEEM Farms tomatoes. Call JEEM Farms and place your order today for the BEST tomatoes you have
ever tasted!
Thank you Michelle and Justin for inviting us to visit your beautiful
farm meet your families and to sample the most incredible tasting
“offseason” tomatoes that can be found anywhere! We had a
wonderful time and will be calling soon to place our orders!

Lebanon Street Mount Airy, NC.
Chamber Members and Guests walked the red carpet through a huge white tent that led them into a beautiful
grand lobby where, NOW SHOWING “CHAMBER AFTER HOURS” was displayed on an overhead area. It was
unbelievable….there was nothing resembling the Cooke Rentals store that we all have been to when we need

The floor and walls were completely done in black, off to one side was the bar complete with bartender serving
your favorite wine or other beverage or you could enjoy the self serve frozen drink area. Delicious heavy

costumes created a lot of fun for most of the guests, shooting hoops outside was just one of the kids entertainment areas set up, popcorn was being popped in the popcorn machine and for the sweet tooth giant size candy
bars were displayed in the glass showcase….just like at the movies.
Owner, Ben Cooke along with his wife Lone, were assisted by longtime Cooke Rental employees; Glenda (38
years), Jody (15 years) and Derrick (9 years) who had planned and executed the most AMAZING transformation that any of us have ever seen!
