City, County, State and Federal Elected Officials along with Chamber Members and hundreds of guests attended the ceremony at the solar farm site and reception that was held at Old North State Winery. The 1.2 mega watt solar farm located on six acres of land that serves as a buffer for the City’s wastewater treatment plant was the site for the grand opening ceremony. In partnership with the City of Mount Airy, Joel Olsen with O2 Energies developed Mayberry Solar Farm the first project of this kind in Surry County. Mayberry Solar Farm will generate enough power to offset the electricity usage of 150 average homes. Duke Energy is buying the electricity and NC Municipal Power Agency 1 is buying the renewable energy credits. Creating work for the local community was a main focus of O2 Energies’ business strategy. Contractors for site clearing, site preparation, training, shipping, staging, construction, electrical work and site leasing were all sourced locally from Surry County which created work for more than 100 individuals. Financing was provided by Mount Airy-based Surrey Bank & Trust. The Mayberry Solar Farm will be a positive tool in future economic development plans and provide a platform for additional growth in the renewable energy industry in our city.
