RECOVERY HAVEN TRALEE LAUNCHES “CELEBRATION OF LIGHT”
Recovery Haven, the Cancer Support House
in Tralee, officially launched their annual
“Celebration of Light” this week. Celebration
of Light has become a very important annual
community event which gives an opportunity
for all those whose lives have been touched by
cancer to come together and share experiences
and celebrate the lives of families and friends.
“This event creates a great meeting point for
people who have been affected personally
or through someone they know by cancer.
The symbolic lighting of candles creates a
very special atmosphere, people are united
and hope is renewed. Through solidarity and
light our sincere aim is to bring hope to our
community,” said Recovery Haven Manager,
Siobhán Mc Sweeney. This year “Celebration
of Light” will be held on Friday June 20th at
7.45pm with candles lit at 8pm.
The following venues have been selected
this year: Abbeyfeale, Ballybunion, Banna,
Camp, Dingle, Fenit, Inch, Killorglin, Killarney,
Causeway and Portmagee. Candles will be lit
simultaneously, at the signal, at each venue.
Candles will be available at various outlets, at
each of these venues prior to 21st July.

History repeats itself this weekend as Louis Walsh’s
new boyband ‘Hometown’ will make its debut on the
Late Late Show just like ‘Boyzone’ in 1994. Pop icon
Louis Walsh has finalised the line-up for an exciting
new pop group he has handpicked specially to replace
‘Westlife’. ‘Hometown’, with a strong North Kerry
connection, are tipped to follow in the steps of the X
Factor judge’s previous world-dominating groups. The
youngest band member Brendan Murray (17) is the
son of Ballyheigue native Julianne Fitzgerald who has
been living in Tuam, Co. Galway for the past 29 years.
“We are thrilled for Brendan and look forward to the
Late Late Show on Friday night. He is mad into music
and even busked in Galway. He was always singing, he
got that from the Marshalls from Kilmoyley,” said his
uncle, Brendan Fitzgerald from Ballyheigue. The other
would-be pop stars in the band are Dubliners Josh
Grey (17) and Dean Gibbons (20), Cian Morrin (19)
from Castlebar, Dayl Cronin (20) from Clonmel and
Ryan McLoughlin (20) from Newbridge. The six young
stars have already given a private preview of their
new album to bosses from Warner Music, just a week
after performing for music giants Sony in London and
Universal Music.

The RTE Tam ratings will hit an all time high in Tralee this weekend when
students from the Presentation Secondary School, Tralee take part in
‘Dragons Den’. Five students from the school with an entrepreneurial
spirit represented Kerry at the All-Ireland finals of Junior Dragons in
Dublin last February. Out of hundreds of applicants a shortlist of 60
ideas from talented young students aged between 12-18 years attended
the final including students from the Presentation Secondary School in
Tralee. The students, Katie and Claire Dillon (Ballyard), Rebecca O’Neill
(Firies), Lucy Foley (Manor) and Abbie Egan (The Kerries) developed a
business which involves stylish and warm hats. Their company is called
‘B-Nee’ and was initially an enterprise project developed at school. When
the students looked at the hats they decided to add another dimension
to the project by stitching on a Livelife logo which is in aid of the Donal
Walsh Foundation. Last week they presented the charity with €250,
part of the proceeds from sales of the hats. After the event in Dublin 20
students were shortlisted by the panel to go forward to pitch their ideas
to the Dragons and a chance to win a €2,000 bursary, which will support
them in bringing their business to the next stage.
Appearing on the TV show on Sunday night on RTE 1 at 9.30pm will be
two of the students, twins Katie and Claire Dillon (17).

WORDSMITH FIONA SET TO BE THE
PRIDE OF BALLYDUFF
A Ballyduff born Nuacht RTÉ journalist is set to
have competition as a master wordsmith…..from
her 12 year old daughter. Fiona Buckley, daughter
of Grett (O’Connor from Ballyduff) and dad
Gerard, will be reading from her newly-published
novel as part of Listowel Writers’ Week. The young
author took on the project after a suggestion by
her teacher Cyril Lovett at Ballyvongane National
School near Coachford, Co Cork, last summer.
During the summer she scripted 3,000 words.
Mr Lovett was so impressed that he approached
the publishers. As part of the National Children’s
Literary Festival in Listowel, Fiona will read to an

audience of 8 to 12-year-olds at Scoil Íosagáin in
Ballybunion on this Friday morning. Profits from
Fiona’s book will go to Down Syndrome Ireland,
which has been a big support to the family.
Fiona’s brother John (9) has Down syndrome. ‘The
book, ‘Better Than Gold’ is set during the Great
Famine and was formally launched last Tuesday
at Macroom Library by singer-songwriter John
Spillane.

MERCY MOUNTHAWK STUDENTS ARE TOP OF THE
CLASS AT ANNUAL STUDENT AWARDS NIGHT
The important role student’s play in the life
of a Tralee school was highlighted at the
weekend when awards were presented
at the Mercy Mounthawk Annual Student
Awards Night. The event on Thursday night
is one of the highlights of the year where
academic, sporting and school participation
is acknowledged. During the awards
night the school acknowledge the efforts
of students across a range of disciplines.
More than 200 students and their parents
attended the event which was coordinated
by teachers Ellen McKenna, Susan O’Halloran
and principal John O’Roarke.
The Outstanding Sports Person of the Year
Award was presented to top basketball and
football star Laura Rogers and Eoin O’Carroll,
one of the leading athletes in Ireland.
Among the popular award winners were
Peter Karmin, Conor O’Mahony and David
Kavanagh who were presented with the
Board of Management Award for their
outstanding contribution to school life.
The Catherine McAuley Award was presented
to Venessa Dinneen who was Head Girl of
the Year while Liam Gannon was recognized
for his excellence in Academics and his
involvement in the school community.
The Tadgh O’Connell Physics Award went
to Michael Grimes with the Gradam Gaeilge
Award presented to Conor O’Mahony.
The Art and Humanitarian Award winner was
Megan Carey while Jacy Ybaned received
the Student Council Award. Other popular
winners included Jack Ferguson who was
presented with the School Community
Service Award, the UCC Cup was won by
Helen Edgar and Christopher Tearle received
the ICA Award. The Drama Award was
presented to Meave Lyons, Iseult Daly, Kate
Ann Harris and Kevin McCarthy.
THE SEARCH FOR MISS KERRY
2014 HAS BEGUN
The countywide search for Miss
Kerry has begun with the final taking
place on June 14th in McSorleys
Nightclub in Killarney. Miss Kerry is
part of the Miss Ireland franchise and
this years final is the 67th Annual
Miss Ireland Final. Last years winner
Ellen O’Shea from Currow finished
in the top 7 of Miss Ireland. This
year Miss World have introduced a
no height restriction so models of
any height can apply, previously the
height was restricted to over 5’7.
David Kelleher of Miss Kerry said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for
any potential model to get involved
in a National competition and
make a great start in their career.
Miss Kerry is open to any girl aged
between 17 - 23 years of age who
lives in Kerry or has connections to
the county.”

AFRICA IN TRALEE…….
Do you know how many countries are in Africa?.
Well Tralee International Resource Centre (TIRC) will
answer that question at an open event on Saturday
May 31st in the Presentation Primary School Hall,
Castle St., Tralee from12.30 to 4pm. The event,
which is open to all, is to celebrate Africa Day. The
Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne will be the special
guest of honour.
“The aim of the event is to build links by informing
the local community about the diversity of
Africa especially in relation to the many different
countries which make up that great continent, and
to give them a chance to meet the many people
from African countries who have made Tralee
their home. We hope people will come and join
us on the day – local and international,” said the
Chair of TIRC, Gillian Wharton Slattery. As well as
music, dance, song and chat there will be African
food and also a magician to entertain children. A
very special part of the opening ceremony of the
event will be a ‘parade of nations’ where children
will march with flags of each African country. The
Bishop will formally open the event at 1pm. Gillian
added: “As the news of the missing girls in Nigeria
is in all our minds, we intend to mark this by having
a petition to sign supporting the call to ‘Bring back
our girls’ – the petition will be sent to the Nigerian
Embassy in Dublin.”

TRALEE SPORTING CHANCE PROGRAMME HONOURED WITH
NATIONAL INCLUSION AWARD
National Learning Network Tralee’s Sporting Chance programme has been
honoured with a National Inclusion Award for Disability Organisations
for its work in the inclusion of people with disabilities in the area of sport
and physical disabilities at a ceremony at the University of Limerick.
National Learning Network was the only disability organisation in Ireland
to receive one of the awards.
The awards are organised by the Cara Adapted Physical Activity Centre
and the judging panel, which included representatives from a wide
range of bodies including the Irish Sports Council, RTÉ, Irish Wheelchair
Sport, Active Ireland, Coaching Ireland and the Cope Foundation, used a
strict criteria, to mark each of the winners, including each organisation’s
philosophy, policy and promotion for the delivery of their programmes.
The Sporting Chance programme received the award, not only for
their work in providing training to people with disabilities, but also
for the many programmes the students have delivered to people with
disabilities outside of the centre. On receiving the award, Kevin Smith,
co-ordinator of the Sporting Chance Programme in Tralee said, “This is
a great honour for the Sporting Chance programme to receive such a
prestigious national award. We encourage our students to get involved
in voluntary work and consistently emphasise the importance of gaining
practical coaching and teaching experience which will be beneficial in

A North Kerry family who regularly host
intercultural exchange students from
all over the world were presented with
an award at the 2014 EIL Intercultural
Learning Host Family Awards Ceremony
in Dublin at the weekend Kay and
Edmond Hayes from Listowel have
opened their home to participants from
EIL’s intercultural exchange programme
for a number of years and have had
students from France, Belgium, Germany,
Slovakia, and the USA. This year, the
Cork-based organisation is celebrating
its 50th anniversary. The Host Family
Awards Ceremony, which took place in
Dublin over the weekend, is part of a
year-long programme of events marking
the organisation’s 50th year in Ireland.
Speaking at the Awards, Director of EIL
Intercultural Learning, Kevin Hickey, said, “A number of the families who received
awards have been hosting students for
over 10 years. The length of the students’
stays varies from a few weeks up to a
year. The Hayes family’s story is living
proof of the enormous impact that these
intercultural experiences can have on
both the participant and the host family,
so I am delighted to be able to recognise
that work at this very special event
today.”

TRALEE GREEN TEENS SCOOP SENIOR WATER PRIZE AT
ECO-UNESCO’S YOUNG ENVIRONMENTALIST AWARDS
Green teens from Mercy Secondary School
Mounthawk scooped the Senior Water
Category prize at ECO-UNESCO’s 15th
annual Young Environmentalist Showcase
and Awards Ceremony held in the Mansion
House, Dublin at the weekend. The Tralee
group won the category with their project
‘Don’t go with the Flo’ that examined the
negative effects that fluoridating our water
has on human health. Their project was
two fold; the short-term aim was to raise
awareness about the dangers of fluoride;
their long-term aim is to rid Irish water of
fluoride. The group began their awareness
campaign by surveying the public to
assess their knowledge on fluoride. They
gave talks in their local community on the
dangers of fluoride, held public taste tests
on fluoridated and unflouridated water,
handed out information leaflets and held
a bake sale to help raise funds to continue
their project. Their main action plan is to
make a series of videos which will appeal to
the public and highlight the problem. They
also hope to encourage local businesses
to go fluoride free by purchasing reverse
osmosis filters. The group was just one of
the 75 lucky groups who were selected for
the finals from almost 4,000 young people
throughout the Republic and Northern
Ireland. The annual awards programme run
by ECO-UNESCO, Ireland’s environmental
education and youth organisation,

The 2014 kerry rose Mary hickey
Mary Hickey from Rathmore is Kerry’s new
Rose. The 26-year-old’s name was announced
at around midnight last Friday to a sold-out
event at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel Tralee.
Mary was one of 27 young women taking part
in the 2014 Kerry Rose Selection, hosted for
the eleventh year by RTÉ TV host Dáithí Ó Sé.
Entrants came from the length and breadth
of the county, including Tralee, Listowel,
Killorglin, Castleisland, Killarney, Caherciveen,
Waterville, Dingle and Knocknagoshel. Mary
was sponsored by O’Donoghue Ring Hotels,
and played the accordion after her on stage
interview with Dáithí. “I’m so overwhelmed
and honoured, it’s an absolute privilege, I
didn’t think for a minute it would be me so
I’m delighted. I wasn’t expecting it at all. I
can’t take the smile off my face. I’m looking
forward to the year ahead and following in

Group, and volunteers with Barretstown Camp
for children with serious illnesses. She was
recently awarded the Gold Gaisce President’s
Award. From Sliabh Luachra, Mary has a keen
interest in music, and plays the concertina. She
is a member of the Marian Players Pantomime
Group and the Glen Theatre. All proceeds of a
raffle held on the Selection Night went to the
Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation who raised
over €1,400 from the event. Mary will support
the charity for her year as Kerry Rose.

TRALEE COMMUNITY COLLEGE POST LEAVING
CERTIFICATE GRADUATION CEREMONY
“All our dreams can come true, if we have the
courage to pursue them”….. Principal Brian Harkin
told the packed audience at the Tralee Community
College Post Leaving Certificate Graduation
Ceremony on Wednesday night. “Gone are the
days when doing a PLC course was seen as a second
chance at education. PLC courses have become the
first choice option for school leavers and adults and
are now regarded as an essential step before the
journey to third level,” he said. Colm McEvoy, CEO
of Kerry Education and Training Board addressed
the graduates and their guests. He compared his
arrival in Kerry last July from Cavan to embark on a
new role leading the county ETB with the journey
all graduates had commenced last September
with Tralee Community College. “It was a journey
into unknown territory but it had worked out well.
My message for graduates is simple; A message
passed down to me from my father ‘education is
no load’ and I encouraged those who didn’t have
employment lined up to continue their studies
either with Tralee Community College or by
using their PLC course to progress to Institutes of
Technologies or Universities.”
Tralee Community College is to be revamped
during the summer months and next year students
can look forward to a designated college of further
education which will be known from September
as Kerry College of Further Education. There will
be a special building for PLC students. The aim
of the new PLC college is to enhance the student
experience, broaden the range of Level 5 and Level
6 courses on offer and to ensure that all courses are
in line with current industry needs. The support of
employers who gave work experience placements
to the close on 500 graduates was acknowledged
on the night. Graduates received certificates in
areas such as business, administration, computer
studies, journalism and event management, hotel/
catering, childcare, engineering etc. The college is
now accepting applications for next years’ courses

MINISTER DEENIHAN LAUNCHES KERRY CULTURAL
DIVERSITY & INTEGRATION CAMPAIGN & EXHIBITION
Minister Jimmy Deenihan has launched
the Kerry Cultural Diversity & Integration
Campaign & Exhibition at the Department of
Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, Killarney. The
aim of the campaign is to raise awareness
of the rich cultural diversity that exists in
the County and the opportunities this can
bring to our communities. The campaign
has a number of elements. It started with a
poster competition to select posters for the
promotion. The next step is the publicity
campaign using the winning posters and the
countywide exhibition of shortlisted entries
which will travel to towns throughout Kerry.
At the launch, the Minister announced
the winners of the poster competition. 1st
place (€500) – Teegan Meehan, St. Joseph’s
School, Ballybunion for her poster ‘Kerry – a
kingdom where diversity reigns’.
2nd place (€300) - Maryanne Keane,
Lixnaw for her poster ‘It’s simple....Some
see differences. Some see friends. Let’s all
respect cultural diversity.’
3rd place (€200) - Declan Sugrue, Cahirciveen
for his poster ‘Integration not segregation
for a Culturally Sweeter Kingdom’.
The winning posters will be used in the
countywide publicity campaign. These
posters will be distributed for display in
schools/colleges, GP/dental surgeries,
community centres, offices, bus/train
stations, buses and supermarkets etc. Both
the winning and shortlisted poster entries
will feature in a countywide exhibition
which will travel to venues throughout
Kerry from May-Dec 2014. The exhibition
will remain at the Department of Arts,
Heritage & the Gaeltacht until the 13th
June. It will then move to Tralee, Killarney
& Cahirciveen libraries during June & July,
before moving to other towns and venues.
The full exhibition schedule will be available

One of Ireland’s top youth volunteers of 2014,
Elysha Ní Chúláin (16), who attends Colaiste
Ide in Dingle was honored this week at a gala
awards ceremony in Washington DC during the
19th annual presentation of the U.S. Prudential
Spirit of Community Awards.
Elysha was presented with a special
commemorative trophy by Prudential Financial
CEO John Strangfeld during the evening event,
which is held each May to present awards to
America’s top two youth volunteers from each
state and the District of Columbia. The honorees
were also personally congratulated for their
outstanding volunteer service by Academy
Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker.
Elysha was named top youth volunteers by
Ireland’s Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards
programme earlier this year. She earned awards
including an all-expense-paid trip to this week’s
special recognition events in Washington, D.C.
Elysha has raised awareness and funds to support
Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin
and the Barretstown Camp for kids with serious
illnesses – two organizations that played a crucial
role in her treatment and recovery from childhood

tumor at age 5, Elysha spent the next 10 years
undergoing treatments at Crumlin, and later
attended the Barretstown camp as a camper.
As part of the Crumlin Heroes Project in 2011,
Elysha spent four months researching and
writing a story about her experience with cancer
– an account the hospital published on its
website and elsewhere. Later, she championed
Crumlin’s national youth fundraiser campaign
through media interviews, school events
and public speaking. She conducted similar
public relations activities for the Barretstown
camp to help raise awareness of its work and
promote its Big Picnic Campaign. At 15 years

TRALEE DECIDES: The people have spoken, the
race is over and Tralee has nine new Councillors
who will represent us at Aras an Chontae for
the next five years, namely Toireasa Ferris and
Pa Daly (both Sinn Fein), Norma Foley (Fianna
Fail), Terry O’Brien (Labour), Jim Finucane (Fine
Gael), Pat McCarthy (Fine Gael), Tom McEllistrim
(Fianna Fail), Sam Locke (Independent) and
Graham Spring (Labour).
Outgoing Town Councillors Johnnie Wall,
Grace O’Donnell, and Gillian Wharton-Slattery
who were unsuccessful in their bids to be reelected were wonderful representatives on
the Town Council during their careers in Local
Government and all can look back on their
achievements with pride and distinction.
Those who are retiring, namely outgoing Mayor
Pat Hussey, Deputy Mayor Mairead Fernane
and Cathal Foley deserve our thanks and praise

ST PAT’S UNDERTAKE DINGLE WALK
CHALLENGE: Members of the St Patrick’s
Blennerville GAA Club will be undertaking the
Dingle Way walk over the June weekend as one
of the main fund raising ventures for the club
this year. A committee led by Derek O’Sullivan
has been putting the final touches to this year’s
walk, and according to Club PRO Joe Costelloe
it’s all systems go.
“We are asking all members of the community
to support our main fundraiser for the year,
the Dingle Way Challenge. This year the walk
will go along the peninsula from Cloghane
to Blennerville with stops in Spillane’s Bar,
Maherees and The Old Schoolhouse in Camp.
Participants are free to complete the full trek or
any of the stages. Registration can completed
online through our website and Facebook
page and forms are also available from Kieran
in O’Shea’s Gala, Blennerville.
The fee is €35 and includes bus transport,
breakfast, lunch, burger and a drink on
completion along with a medal. All participants
will also receive a goodie bag for the trek
with drinks, fruit and a map. It promises to be
a great days fun on the mountains and along
the beaches. We are asking all friends of St Pats
to support the walk either by taking part or by
sponsoring one of the participants.

TRALEE MOURNS A MUCH LOVED CITIZEN:
Many tributes have been paid to Beatrice Daly
of Castlecountess, whose death occurred on
Wednesday, May 21st, just a couple of months
after she celebrated her 100th birthday.
A lady to her fingertips, Mrs Daly was a sister
of the late Denis (Denna) Fitzgerald, who ran a
very popular shop in Rock Street for many years.
Beatrice would often help out in the shop and
had a great rapport with the regular customers.
Beatrice was the last surviving member of her
family and the last of the original neighbours
in Castlecountess. Beatrice was widowed at
a young age when her husband Paddy, who
was a native of Clonmel died, but she was a
wonderful mother to her four children, her sons
Frank, Denis and Pat and her only daughter
Helen who continues to live in Castlecountess.
Beatrice lived to see her grandson Pa Daly and
her nephew Conor Fitzgerald both become
members of Tralee Town Council and she was
very proud of this. A few short months ago
when Beatrice celebrated her 100th milestone
birthday, she was treated to a gala occasion at
the Meadowlands Hotel, where three different
generations of the family gathered to fete her.
It was a wonderful tribute which was richly
deserved. Beatrice was a lover of horse racing
and enjoyed her daily flutter at the bookies.
She also had a major interest in the fortunes of
Kerry football and the Austin Stacks GAA club
as her brothers Denna and John were leading
lights in the club for many years. Beatrice
Daly is mourned by her sons Frank, Denis and
Pat, daughter Helen, grandchildren, great
grandchildren, nephews, nieces and many
friends.
SOCIAL SCENE: This week’s Social Scene
was quite busy. Events started on Thursday
evening when Kerry Downs Syndrome held
a Fashion Show with a difference at Ballyroe
Heights Hotel. The event was attended by over
700 people. On Friday night, Kerry Festival of
Pride held a fundraising evening at Nightjar
in The Square. The Na Gaeil GAA Club hosted
a Medals presentation for the Club’s Junior
Footballers who last year won the Tralee
Vintner’s Tournament which was organised in
conjunction with the Festival of Kerry and the
Barrett Cup final.
The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium was the
venue for one of the social events of the year as
the Austin Stacks GAA Club held a fundraising
night at the Dogs.

hosts Kingdom Alliance
Sportive
FORGET the elections, change your first preference to cycling and get
involved in a ‘wheelie’ good event in Tralee next weekend when the
town plays host to the second annual Kingdom Alliance Sportive.
The CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “The
Kingdom Alliance Sportive is effectively a Tour of Kerry cycle and it
has already become a major 3 day event for Tralee. Last year the KAS
brought substantial business to Tralee over the June Bank Holiday
weekend as all stages start and finish in Tralee. We would like to
surpass last year’s figure of 320 entries and so far figures are looking
good to exceed this number.”
All stages offer the option of a 50 mile or a 100 mile route. There is also
the option to do 1, 2 or all 3 days as required. This year’s event starts
on Saturday 31st May with Stage One going from Tralee to Killarney.
Stage Two on Sunday heads out west to Dingle and Stage Three will
see the participants explore the North Kerry coastline.
This year’s event has the support of The Kerryman and Independent
Newspapers Fit Magazine, while the first stage also forms part of the
Skoda National Series, bringing much prestige to the event.
Kieran Ruttledge said that Tralee Chamber Alliance members and the
wider community in Tralee were being encouraged to get involved
next weekend by spreading the word to those who may be cycling
enthusiasts or by sharing the details on social media.
Volunteers will be welcome to help act as Event Marshalls and anyone
interested in offering a few hours of their weekend, can contact

SINN FEIN GAIN SEATS IN STUNNING PERFORMANCE IN TRALEE
The stunning performance of Sinn Fein nationally
in the County Council elections was mirrored
in Tralee where the party gained over 4,700 first
preference votes resulting in the party winning
the two seats in the Tralee electoral area.
With nearly 3 quotas, many Sinn Fein supporters
were again questioning why the party did not run
a third candidate in the nine-seat Tralee area.
As was widely expected Toireasa Ferris stormed
home, securing a massive first preference vote of
2,679. She was closely followed by her Tralee Town
based running mate Pa Daly, who put in a very
strong performance for a first time candidate and
secured 2,122 first preference votes. Both easily
topping the poll, and were elected on the first
count with 1,500 surplus votes to spare.
It was an emotional election for first time candidate
Pa Daly, a Solicitor in Rock Street, who was coopted to Tralee Town Council in 2012 following the
resignation of Toireasa Ferris, who on polling day,
buried his grandmother Beatrice Daly. The tallies
showed Fianna Fail’s Norma Foley, Fine Gael’s
Jim Finucane and Labour’s Terry O’Brien all set to
reach the quota and the indications were that a
very close struggle would ensue for the remaining
four seats with five candidates Sam Locke
(Independent), who polled 815 first preferences,
Ted Fitzgerald (Fianna Fail), (946), Graham Spring
(Labour) (899), Tom McEllistrim (1087) and former
Fianna Fail party member Johnnie Wall who stood
as an independent (763) in the mix.
The remaining candidates, Grace O’Donnell
(Fine Gael) who polled a disappointing 657 first
preferences, Tommy Collins (independent) (511)
and Gillian Wharton-Slattery (396) were hoping
to improve their position on transfers but this did
not materialise.
In all, nine counts were completed before an
official result was declared in Tralee on Sunday
evening.
The first count which was declared shortly after
11pm on Saturday night, resulted in the joint
election of Sinn Fein duo Toireasa Ferris and Pa
Daly who both exceeded the quota of 1,599.
One of the election highlights was the spectacular
performance of Independent Sam Locke who
polled 815 first preferences Locke’s election was
due to his hard work on the ground in Tralee
where he is an active Community representative
and his solid work on Tralee Town Council.

Elected Toireasa Ferris S.F. Her total votes were 2,679 and her Surpluses was 1,080.
Pa Daly S.F. His total votes were 2,122 and his Surpluses was 523 .
The second count resulted in the election of
Norma Foley (FF) who secured an impressive 117
surplus votes from Toireasa Ferris. Ms Foley had to
wait until the final count to secure the final seat
in 2009, and her performance this time where she
outpolled party running mate Tom McEllistrim in
Tralee, was very impressive. Foley now has to be
one of the favourites for a Dail nomination for
the party in the next General Election, as gender
balance will be in place and party bosses will note
her performance. Pa Daly’s surplus distribution
did not affect the outcome while the elimination
of Gillian Wharton-Slattery after the fourth count
essentially secured the re-election of party
colleague Terry O’Brien in the 6th count. The
elimination of Grace O’Donnell on the sixth count
helped party colleague Jim Finucane reach the
quota in the seventh count. The elimination of
Fianna Fail’s Ted Fitzgerald who finished with 1056
votes, certainly proved crucial. Fitzgerald’s former
Fianna Fail colleague, Johnnie Wall, needed a
massive transfer to stay in the hunt and overtake
Graham Spring, but it was not to be as Wall only
received 146 compared to Spring’s 176 while Tom
McEllistrim received 247.
At the Election count at the John Mitchels GAA Club Tralee were John Brassil Listowel area
elected and Jim Finucane elected from the Tralee area .
The final count results were Locke (1439),
McCarthy (1564), McEllistrim (1569) Spring (1431)
and Wall (1304). Four of the remaining candidates,
Sam Locke, Pat McCarthy, Tom McEllistrim and
Graham Spring were then deemed elected
without reaching the quota.

years as a representative
of the people of Tralee.
A highly respected
councillor, Mr Fitzgerald
was a very young 29
years old when he was
first elected to the then Tralee UDC in 1974 and is
a former Chairman/Mayor of Tralee Town Council
and Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council.
“I was very honoured and privileged to serve
the people of Tralee for 40 years on the Town
Council, and 24 years on the County Council and
serve as Chairman of both bodies as well. I was
disappointed that I wasn’t elected but I have no
regrets in allowing my name go forward. In politics
you may have rivals but you also have strong
friendships and I was fortunate that many of the
Councillors I worked with down through the years
were personal friends of mine. We worked for a
common purpose whether it was for the Town
or the County and I would like to wish the nine
who were elected well for the next few years,” said
Mr Fitzgerald, who was Chairman of Tralee Town
Council on four occasions and Mayor of Kerry from
2008-09, and was Mayor of Kerry from 2006-07.

“This has been a fantastic election for Sinn Fein.
We have increased our party’s representation
on Kerry County Council from two seats to five.
Our performance comes as no surprise to me.

People are disillusioned with mainstream politics
and politicians in general at the moment. They
are disgusted with the government for all their
broken promises and the cutbacks they have
placed which effect people everywhere including
the most vulnerable in society. People supported
Sinn Fein because we offer an alternative voice to
what’s out there at the moment, and are punishing
Fine Gael and Labour for the mistakes they have
made and the austerity they have imposed. The
electorate still hasn’t forgiven Fianna Fail for their
disastrous handling of the catastrophic economic
collapse when they were in office. Sinn Fein’s vote
has grown substantially in Tralee since 2009 when
we got 21% of the vote. We increased this to 30%
this time and this is due in no small way to the
work of Cathal Foley and Pa Daly at Tralee Town
Council, myself at Kerry County Council level, my
dad Martin Ferris in the Dail and our team on the
ground.” She refused to be drawn on whether or
not she will be a Sinn Fein candidate in the next
General Election. “This is not a Ferris seat, it is a
Sinn Fein seat. There are five solid candidates now
waiting in the wings if and when Martin Ferris
steps down. Of course it would be an honour and
a wonderful opportunity to represent the people
of Kerry in the Dail, I would never rule anything in
or out as the saying goes but that is a long way
off yet.”

Independent candidate Sam Locke put his
election down to his solid work ethic on behalf of
his constituents. “Since I was elected to the Town
Council, I ran a weekday clinic in Der O’Sullivan’s
in Tralee where I made myself available to meet
the public and address their concerns. The queries
I received, and there were many, were passed to
the relevant authorities on their behalf, and the
response to the query was quickly delivered to
the individual concerned. I am honoured and
delighted to be elected to the new authority. There
are a lot of issues that need to be sorted, among
them are housing. We have to tackle the severe
housing crisis and release funds to purchase
a lot of private houses which are currently
unoccupied. Our secondary roads are in a bad
way too following the storms and are in need of
rapid repair. It is important for me that Tralee Town
Centre is looked after and efforts must be made
to create jobs and attract new business to bring
Tralee back to what it once was.”

about standing. I was
absolutely gutted not
to get the party (Fianna
Fail) nomination. I was
late into the race and
the fact that I was sick at the start of the campaign
meant a further delay in my canvass, but I am not
using this as an excuse. I had some wonderful
times on the Council. I would like to wish the nine
who were elected well. I have every confidence in
them.”

OUTLOOK ON THE STATE EXAMINATIONS
It’s time to do the exams.
The state exams begin next Wednesday, so
this is the final weekend for major revision.
Stick to your study plan on Saturday and
Sunday while concentrating on subjects
being examined during the first week. As the
exams run into the second and third weeks,
the optional subjects are nicely spaced out
allowing free days for study.
Prioritise last minute work in English, Home
Economics, Engineering, Geography and
Mathematics and get it done by Sunday
night. On Monday, concentrate on the tips
and predictions that have been made for
subjects being examined on Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday. Don’t cram on the days
before the exam as this may cause confusion
and is physically tiring.
Spent an hour or two on Tuesday skimming
over your notes for Wednesday’s exams and
leave it at that. A period of relaxed leisure will
be more beneficial than spending the day
cramming material that you may not recall
anyway. Your most important asset going into
the exam is a clear and alert mind. Remember
that exams test not only your knowledge but
also your staying power.
On the evening before each paper spend an
hour or so looking over your notes so that
the important concepts and ideas are fresh in
your mind. Heavy study sessions on the night
prior to any paper are not a good idea as you
will be exhausted the following morning.
Instead, relax and get a good night’s rest. Put
all thoughts of the following day’s exam out
of your mind. If you find it difficult to sleep
try a little non-academic reading for a short
while.
Over the next few days check your equipment
and assemble your exam materials – biros,
pencils, ruler, eraser, drawing instruments,
calculator and so on. Always have at least two
biros or fountain pens in case one runs out of
ink or doesn’t work properly. It’s time, too, to
organise your personal needs such as a watch
and tissues.
A few nerves are normal on the first day. You
might feel a little tense so be prepared to deal
with it. Perhaps a relaxation exercise or maybe
a shower to freshen up will do the trick. Eat a
nutritious breakfast as you’ll need the extra
reserves of energy. Many students like to say
a quiet prayer or attend Mass on the morning
of each exam. Finally, go through your
equipment checklist before you leave home.
On Wednesday morning arrive at the exam
venue at least a half hour before the exam
begins. For all subsequent exams be present
about fifteen minutes before the appointed
time. Spend the few minutes before entering
the exam venue on your own in peace and
quiet. At all costs, avoid groups which are
involved in last minute revision. If you need
to, use the bathroom before you enter the
exam venue. Be in your seat a few moments
before the exam is due to begin. Synchronise
your watch with the clock on the wall and use
your watch to help you pace your work.
Check your seat and desk for firmness and
stability. A shaky desk will torment you and
distract you during the exam. When the
answer book is distributed, fill in your exam
number and the other required details. Read
the directions on the back cover. This will help
you relax and focus your mind on the task in
hand. When you receive your question paper
read the instructions carefully in case there
is any change of format. Don’t be put off by
your first glance at the paper. It’s new and it
will look unfamiliar at first. Once the exam
begins, keep to your prepared answering plan
and address the questions which are asked.
If you finish a paper before the allotted time
has elapsed, do not leave the exam venue.
Recheck your work and extra information
may come to you. Attempt an extra question
only when you have thoroughly answered

the previous questions. Once an exam is over,
spend as little time as possible on a postmortem. Focus on the next paper and when
the entire exam is over forget about it and
enjoy your summer. There is no advantage
in dwelling on what might have been. Every
candidate, no matter how brilliant, will feel
that s/he could have done better if only s/he
had done this or that. Be happy and satisfied
that you have done your best.

next few weeks.

GEARING UP FOR THE
RING
OF KERRY CYCLE

WEEK 7 – Week Beginning
May 26th – Nutrition – Fluid
Intake
So we are just beyond reaching the
half way point….another 6 weeks
to go of dedicated training for the
Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle – so keep
focused and enjoy the time!
This week’s focus will be on
nutrition - primarily fluid intake. I
will preface by saying that I am not
a qualified dietician; however I am
willing to share my experiences
and knowledge gained, as a means
of positively assisting your cycling
experience.
Cyclists can cover large mileage over
any given week, with a traditionally
‘long’ ride over the weekend.
Although the energy expenditure
isn’t as high as running; it is important
to ensure that cyclists consume
enough energy through out the day
and over the week to sustain the
volume of training required.
Drink Plenty!! - It is recommended
to drink 500-1000ml of fluid an
hour while riding, which equates
to minimum 1 bike water bottle
per hour. And bear in mind this is
only a rough guide. The amount
consumed will vary depending on
intensity, duration and weather
conditions. The longer, harder the
work out and hotter the conditions,
the more one ought to drink, and
vice versa. So drinking when riding
is very important so as to replace the
water you sweat and breathe out.
For longer training rides and during
the Ring of Kerry cycle event, it is
important to use drinks to help
refuel. By that I mean a drink that
is 5-7% carbohydrate based. This is
known as an isotonic drink. Some
people prefer a hypotonic drink,
which is a drink of less than 5%
carbohydrate concentration. The
bottom line is to drink a drink that
contains the same concentration
of dissolved particles as your body
fluids, so they will be absorbed faster.
Also choose a drink that contains
electrolytes, particularly sodium, as
this will speed up the delivery of the
fluids to your body parts.
It is vital to go for a drink flavour
that you enjoy the taste of, as you
will be more inclined to drink it!
So add an orange of blackcurrant
flavour – your choice. Unless you
have a weak bladder, drink plenty
before you go out on the bike, so
that you start off fully hydrated,
and continue drinking afterwards.
Little and often will aid recovery. If
your training ride is over an hour
make it a carbohydrate drink, and
if under the hour, flavoured water
will suffice. The most important
thing is to remain hydrated, as being
dehydrated compromises recovery.
Also it is very important to refuel
within half an hour to an hour after
cycling so as to replace the nutrients
used up during the ride. Ideally
these drinks would be of a protein
base, so that the body can fast track
the nutrients towards muscle repair.
So as to eat within this recovery
window, make sure you are prepared,
by having a drink on the ready when
you arrive back at base, be it a bottle
to hand in the car, or at the front
door. If you like milk, the flavoured
milk shakes work a treat.

NORTH KERRY STUDENTS GRADUATE IN POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH
This week 80 Transition Year students from across
the country, graduated from a mental health
awareness programme at St. Patrick’s Mental
Health Services, Dublin.
Each year, St. Patrick’s run a Transition Year
Programme. The aim is to educate young people
about mental health issues and to breakdown the
stigma associated with mental illness.
Transition year students nationwide were invited
to take part in the week long programme hosted
by the Adolescent Mental Health team in Willow
Grove Adolescent Unit. On their return to school,
students were asked to hold a mental health
awareness event for fellow pupils. These ranged
from formal presentations to classmates &
teachers to fun activities. Of the students who took part,
· 51% felt if they needed advice in relation to
mental health wellbeing, they would seek it from
a family member.
· 20% said they would seek advice from a friend.
· 19% said they would seek advice online.
· 5% said they would ring a helpline.
· 5% felt they would visit their GP.

The pupils and teachers of Gaelscoil
Mhic Easmainn recently enjoyed an
action packed fun filled week while
enhancing their knowledge of the
rules of the road in a new initiative
set up by the Road Safety Authority
which aims to bring issues of Road
Safety to life for primary school
children
Halla na Gaelscoile was transformed
into a typical street scene where the
pupils took on different roles such as
pedestrians, cyclists and motorists
observing sign posts and traffic
lights while learning from their own
Streescape experiences and those
of their classmates. All pupils were
quickly discussing issues of Road
Safety and safe pedestrian behaviour.
As part of the programme all pupils
received a personalised safety
licence-ceadúnas
sabháilteachtafor completing the road safety
programme.
“We would highly recommend
this excellent programme and its
facilitators Brian agus Rachel. ’Street
Smart Kids’ opened the eyes of all our
pupils in a fun, practical way to the
importance of the rules of the road”
said Príomhoide Cáit Ui Chonchuir.
The Gaelscoil were delighted to share
the Streetscape with visits from the
local Listellick school whose pupils
and teachers were equally impressed
with this very worthwhile project.

the top MATHletes in Kerry in their
respective class, having triumphed
over their fellow competitors at the
MATHletes Challenge Provincial
finals which took place on the
second weekend in May. The winning
students were Adam Butler, 1st year
Mercy Secondary School, Tralee and
Ciara Sookarry a 2nd year student
at Presentation Secondary School
Tralee. 150 winners and qualifiers
from the 300 students who competed
at the MATHletes Challenge
Provincial finals, representing 38
primary and 31 secondary schools
from around the country, will now
go onto to compete against each

TRADITIONS CAN BE GOOD OR VERY BAD:
Every culture has traditions to honour the
contributions women make as mothers,
daughters, leaders, friends, and citizens.
Unfortunately, far too many cultures also
enforce traditions that marginalize, oppress and
even terrorize their female populations: female
genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, sex
trafficking, and more.
Jaha was born in western Africa’s The Gambia
and was not even a week old when she
underwent FGM.
No one told Jaha the reason she had been
mutilated was to guarantee her virginity before
marriage. She learned this in a Manhattan
doctor’s office at age 15 when she was forced
into a marriage to a 45-year-old man. Jaha then
had to go through a re-opening process, which
felt like undergoing FGM again.
This is the story of hundreds of thousands of girls:
denied autonomy over their bodies, their own
health, who they love and whether and when
to have children. It’s a story that takes place all
around the world and not just in remote villages
but in pricey doctor’s offices in cities and towns.
We must not ignore stories like this, but we must
also understand that these stories don’t have to
end in violence and fear. In fact, Jaha’s story has
only just begun. She has rejected the secrecy
often demanded by the families and cultures
of FGM survivors. Recently, she’s launched a
petition—with thousands of signatures and
counting—asking the United States Congress to
face the fact that FGM happens there and finally
gather the data on just how many girls are at
risk.
Jaha fled her forced marriage. She refused
to believe the lie that women who reject
misogynistic violence are somehow unclean, or
undignified, or unworthy of love and success in
their lives. She was brave enough to later marry
a partner she chose for herself. And despite the

damage inflicted upon her body, Jaha found the
courage to have children of her own, at the time
of her choosing.
Jaha has dedicated her life to making sure the
story of such cruelty ends now, and that when
we look at girls of every colour we will see the
strong, safe, powerful women they deserve to
become.

encounter with both teams giving a fine display

scores. It was the home side that came out on
top, winning by 2 points. Both teams are to be

What an action packed week for our girl
footballers in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol
Girls’ football league and the County skills
competition. On Tuesday last Mairéad Kearney,
Sinéad O’Mahony and Chloe Casey produced
a fantastic display of accurate kicking to win
the Tralee/Brendan’s Board skills competition
in Healy Park, Ballyrickard. Congratulations
girls agus go néirí libh in the County final in
Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney in early June.
On Wednesday our school team had a good
win in the quarter final of the Allianz Cumann
na mBunscol Urban Shield against Presentation
Tralee. They accounted for St.John’s Kenmare in
the semifinal in the Spa Killarney GAA ground
on Thursday. We now play Lissivigeen Killarney
in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Urban
Shield final in Austin Stacks Park Tralee on
Tuesday the 27th of May. Well done girls agus

BALLYDUFF PIONEERS/100: The Ballyduff
Temperance (Pioneer) hall which was built in
1911, and extended in 1914, was destroyed
by fire on November 24th 1917. The surviving
photo with the pioneers and two bands was
taken on Sunday August 23rd 1914. We have
a local Pioneer Certificate surviving from
November 1911. The local pioneers first became
affiliated to the main centre in Dublin on May
25th 1914 – 100 years ago this week.

U8 Hurling Blitz: A huge crowd attended
this blitz on Friday evening last with as many
as 14 teams present and seven games going

KERRY HURLERS: Good Luck to the Kerry
Senior Hurlers who will play Mayo in the Christy

SCOREBOARD: The scoreboard which was
blown down on February 12th by Storm Darwin
has been re-erected and a new electronic
scoreboard has been fitted. Many thanks to
those who helped in he re-construction. The
new scoreboard will greatly enhance the
facilities at Ballyduff GAA Grounds.
NIGHT AT THE DOGS: Tickets for the Kerry
County Board GAA Night at the Dogs are

POC FADA: Comórtas Poc Fada Chiarraí,
the county long puck hurling competition
will take place over a course on Kerryhead
Mountain on this Saturday May 31st. Each club
may be represented by one competitor in the
senior, under 16 and camogie competitions.
The Kerry winners will represent the county
in the Munster finals to be held in the Galtee

and twelve minutes per half. We will be based in
Knocknagree and other teams in our group are
Mayfield, Ballydonoghue and Knocknagree.
Meanwhile U14s Cillian Gallagher, Tadhg Brick,
Brian Lonergan, Josh O’Keeffe, and Daire Keane
have helped Castleisland reach the semi final of
the county U14 district championship. Having
already beaten East Kerry and Shannon Rangers
they now meet West Kerry this Wednesday
evening at 7.30 in Blennerville.

Many Thanks to Milltown/C’maine for hosting
our U10’s boys today. Our U10’s fielded three
teams in the second round of the Castleisland
District Go Games. Boys that played well in these
games were Cody O Shea, Kieran Slattery, Jack

First Holy Communion: We congratulate
the 12 girls and boys from Scoil Nuachabhail
and Clogher N.S. who received their First Holy
Communion on Saturday 17th May 2014 in St.
Brendan’s Church Clogher. We ask the Lord to
continue to bless them and their families and
their teachers, Kathy Dunne (Scoil Nuachabhail
N.S.) and Sinead Murphy, (Clogher N.S.) who
helped them to prepare for that most special
day in their lives. We also thank the teachers
for their hard work in this respect over the
last few months and Claire Greaney secretary
and special needs assistant Clogher N.S. for
producing the booklet for last Saturday’s Mass.
We also thank Nellie Brosnan for helping to
have the church looking so well for the occasion
with her beautiful flowers and the choir from
the two schools who greatly enhanced the
celebration with their beautiful singing and
anyone else who helped in any way to make it
such a memorable occasion. The children who

Special prayers will be said for students doing
exams at the 10am Mass in the Church of the

Sunday 1st June 2014. A special invitation
is extended to Leaving Cert and Junior Cert
students to come to this Mass.
Rogation:
Rogation water will be blessed at the Vigil
Mass on Saturday evening and the Sunday
morning Mass next weekend 31st May / 1st
June 2014. This water can then be brought
home to sprinkle on one’s fields and gardens
as well as on one’s crops and animals asking
God’s blessing on them all. Those students who
are doing exams in the coming days or weeks
might also like to bring home some of this holy
water, little bottles will be provided for this
purpose.

Dingle Way Challenge 2014: The clock is
ticking down to the 2014 Dingle Way Challenge
which is only days away! Registration online
has continued to rise and the hard-working
committee led by Derek O’Sullivan are putting
the final touches to the event. We are asking all
members of the community to support our main
fundraiser for the year, the Dingle Way Challenge.
This year the walk will go along the peninsula
from Cloghane to Blennerville with stops in
Spillane’s Bar, Maherees and The Old Schoolhouse
in Camp. Participants are free to walk all the
trek or any of the stages. Registration can be
done online through our website and Facebook
page and forms are also available with Kieran
in O’Shea’s Gala, Blennerville. The fee is €35 and
includes bus transport, breakfast, lunch, burger
and a drink on completion along with a medal.
All participants will also receive a goodie bag for
the trek with drinks, fruit and a map. It promises
to be a great days fun on the mountains and
along the beaches. We are asking all friends of
St Pats to support the walk either by taking part
or by sponsoring one of the participants and all
money raised is being used to improve our club
facilities. We want all walkers that intend to start
the challenge in Cloghane to be at the St Pats
Dressing Rooms in Blennerville at 4:30am sharp!
Buses will be leaving at 5am sharp for Cloghane
with the walk due to commence at 5:45pm.

Family Section of Dingle Way
Challenge: Everyone who wishes to walk on
the family section of the Dingle Way Challenge
is asked to assemble at Curraheen on June 1st
at 2.30pm. We are encouraging as many parents
and juveniles to join in the fun and walk with
friends and colleagues from the church to our
pitch along the scenic mountain path. At the
pitch, refreshments will be provided in a carnival
atmosphere. You can register at O’Sheas Shop in
advance of the event.
Juvenile Academy: We had a smaller turnout
last Sunday morning but every child who attended
on the day put in a great training session. a huge
welcome to Ruan Culloo who made his debut. The
u8’s and u10’s trained together and we saw great
passing and kicking skills and a big welcome to
another new comer Samuel Barrero .There will be
no training on Sunday morning due to the Dingle
Way Challenge.

Our academy will run on Wednesdays through
the month of June commencing on June 4th. This

Congratulations: to Killury N.S. who
received their second green flag (on energy)
at a ceremony in Cork. Members of the green
schools committee travelled to the Silver
Springs Hotel in Cork to collect the flag. Plans
are now underway to have a flag raising
ceremony. Killury N.S. hosted a meeting this
week as part of their Comenius Project. “what
makes me smile/Laugh”. Six teachers travelled
from Penmachno , Conwy, Wales and South
Yorkshire, England to share jokes, stories and
games with the pupils of Killury!

Senior county championship of 2014 , the home side got off to the
ideal start with two pointed frees from Cathal Moriarty and Derek Twiss
. Castlegregorys Alan Fitzgerald opened the visitors account with a
powerfull shot to the back of the net leaving Joe Daly with no chance ,
Both side traded points over the next number of minutes with two for
Pa Wren and two from the boot of Eanna O’Connor . Both sides where
playing some great football but Eamon Hickson netted another goal for
West Kerry on the twenty minute mark . West Kerry upped the tempo in
the last few minutes of the first half with points from Declan O’Sullivan
and Jason Hickson leaving the score at half time West Kerry 2-7 Milltown

Milltown Castlemaine struck with intent in the opening minute of the first
half with two points from Derek Twiss .Both sides playing some free flowing
football with Declan O’Sullivan infiltrating the Milltown defence with some
dangerous runs . Jack McCarthy was introduced to the play after thirtheen
minutes for Jer Hayes . Declan O’Sulivan received a black card for pulling
down Pa Wren , Derek Twiss again took the free bringing his tally to seven
points for the game , Johnathon O’Sullivan was introduced for Cathal
Moriarty with ten minutes to go and had an immediate effect scoring
two points . The home side still trailed by three points with the score 2-11
to 14 points .Derek Twiss again scored another two points bringing the
difference to the minimum of a point . Colm O Muircheartaigh responded
with a point for Wesr Kerry but Milltown Castlemaine sensing it could be
there day launched another attack with a point from Jack McCarthy but it
was again Derek Twiss who pulled the home side closer with an equaliseing

U-16s: Congratulations to our U-16 team and mentors that defeated
Austin Stacks in the Central League Division 3 Final last Monday night
(19th May) on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-09. On what was a wet night, the
Churchill lads handled the conditions better and put in a great team
performance. Driven on by centre back and captain Sean Mortimer,
Churchill had the beating of their opponents in all areas of the field.
The forwards were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over throughout
the match, while the defence were a match for the Stacks forwards,
restricting them to very few goal-scoring opportunities. Well done to all
involved.
GAA: The B team have a game against Charlie Kerins in the Spa on

Fenit Samphires:
Fenit Samphires 2 – Park 5: Our 16s run in the Tucker Kelly Cup finally
ended at the hands of national cup finalists St Brendan’s Park in blustery
conditions last Thursday evening in Fenit. The strong crosswind made it
difficult to get the ball down and play but both teams did very well to
serve up an entertaining game. We had as expected less of the ball than
our opponents but we were compact in defence and kept them at arms
length from our goals for a lot of the game. Indeed we were one up at
half time after a defensive lapse by the Park let Oisin O’Brien in and he
made no mistake. In the second half the bigger Park team got more to
grips with the elements and as the half wore on we tired a little but that
was enough and they forced two goals after 15 minutes. We got more
into it then but we just couldn’t get past a solid defence. They scored
a third goal after 25 minutes after some untypical defending by us on
our endline. They quickly added a fourth on the counter as we pushed
on but eventually we got our reward after Thomas Lenihan and Bobby
O’Regan combined to play a beautifully weighted pass just beyond their
defence. Christopher Murphy despite having cramp was on to it like
quicksilver and dinked it over the advancing keeper and tapped it in to
the empty net. We conceded another in the last minute needlessly but
it is hard to apportion blame as everybody had given everything they
had for the cause. Well done to all our team for their brave performance
against a good team who no doubt will be favourites to win the cup.

Fenit travelled to Killarney last Wednesday to play in the Domino Pizza
Reserve Cup.They out classed the Killarney side with goals from Daniel
Clinton (3),Ger McCarthy (2), Bill Mullins,Kiaren o Mahoney and Jack
Savage.

is a son of former Crotta hurler Denis Mahony
and Arlyn Mahony and he received his Award
on Thursday night 22nd May at the end of the

The juniors chalked up another victory in the
county league with a hard earned victory over
Dr Crokes. They are away to Abbeydorney this

The senior suffered their second defeat in the
North Kerry league going down 0-12 to 0-7
to Ballyheigue. Their final North Kerry league
game is against Causeway at a later date.
NIGHT AT DOGS; A huge crowd made their
way to the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium for
the Lixnaw Hurling Club Night at the Dogs
last Saturday night. The programme of events
began with Mass in the Stadium ground floor
celebrated by Fr Mossie Brick. Greyhound
racing begins at 7-45pm with 11 all sponsored
top class races. The main race of the evening
was the Lixnaw GAA Buster Sweepstake Race
for the Liam Foley memorial trophy, sponsored
by the Lixnaw Coursing club with the Buster
prize of Ä500 sponsored by Kathleen Foley,
Foleys Galaexpress. Congratulations to the
Buster prize winner, Breda Curran, Caherdaniel
(sistser of our own Mary) and second Buster
prize winner, Bernie Whelan, Finuge.

MONTH’S MIND MASS: Our Lady & St. Brendan‚s
Church was crowded last Friday evening (23rd
May) for the Month‚s Mind Mass for Trevor Barrett.
Celebrant Fr. Padraig Walsh PP, in his brilliant
unscripted six minute sermon, encapsulated
everything that was good about Trevor in his
all too short 29 years. Hurling colleague Ronan
Gilsenan and Trevor’s first cousin Sadhbh Maguire
- recited two beautiful poems listing his many
qualities and interests as a person and a player.

NIGHT AT THE DOGS: Last Friday Night (23rd
May) at Tralee Greyhound Stadium our Night at
the Dogs Fundraiser (in association with our main
Sponsor for the evening Quinlans‚ Fish Shops &
Seafood Bars) in aid of our new Field purchase
and development took place. All 11 races were
sponsored our thanks to Garvey’s Super Valu,
Nolan’s Garage, Premier Financial, The Green
Rooster, The Castle Bar, Friends of the Rock,
Quinlans Fish Buster, David Power Butcher, John
Lane & Sons, Jim Finucane Auctioneer, and The
Meadowlands Hotel.
It was a big Family Night with our Juveniles
parading the greyhounds before each race, and
the on-track Rockie Bartenders race (won by Flash
O‚Shea) and also our Club Juvenile race.
Also introduced to the crowd were our all
conquering U14 Féile Team who travel to Galway
for the National Féile Finals at the end of next
month. In the Clubhouse afterwards the popular
Fiddlers Green provided outstanding music as
usual. Our thanks again to everyone for their
generous contributions and support, and to all
our members and friends who worked so hard
over the past few weeks to make the occasion
such a wonderful success.
SENIOR FOOTBALL: On this coming Sunday
(1st June) we travel to Listowel where there is a
double-header in the first round of the Co.
Championship. Our game against Feale Rangers
is due to start at 3.30pm with the curtainraiser (Shannon Rangers .v. Kilcummin) getting
underway at 2pm.
HURLING: Game 3 of the League, at home to
Kilgarvan, did not go ahead as scheduled last

Ladies unbeaten run came to an end when
loosing to Corca Dhuibhne 2-14 to 4-4 last
Sunday in Lispole. Na Geail started the better
with a goal from Meadbh Horgan but this was

Fenit Samphires 2-5 Park A,
After last weeks national cup final we travelled
to fenit with only 12 fit players for the cup semi
final. We were 1-0 down at half time with a strong
breeze playing a big factor on how the game was
played. We raced into a 4-1 lead within 20 minutes
of the second half with goals from Sam Tarrant,
Segun Duyile and a brace from Fergal Ryan. To
Fenit’s credit they never gave up and scored again
before Luke Moynihan bagged our 5th of the
game to see us into the Cup Final .

St Brendans Park Fc Open Day will take place on
Saturday June 7th from 12.00pm to 4.00pm at
Christy Leahy Park in association with McDonalds
. The McDonald’s FAI Future Football Programme,
is a brand new programme designed to support
clubs and enhance the great work done at local
level. This new club initiative has been developed
to combine various elements of coach education,
player development and club management that
will give young footballers a platform for the
application of their skills in an inclusive, fun and
friendly environment. Future Football will bring

offering great benefits to the clubs taking part this
year, and set targets and benchmarks for other
clubs to aim for as the programme grows in scale
and reach year on year. The day will comprise of
fun activities for all participants, and also 4v4

clubs participating this year are St Brendans
Park Fc, Killarney Celtic Fc, Killarney Athletic Fc
and Listowel Celtic Fc. The event should see up
to 200 children participating on the day. Also on
the day St Brendans Park Fc will be making medal
presentations to our Schoolboy teams.

Unfortunately our attempt to make it four league
finals in a row failed today in Castleisland in our last
league game of the season . After a slow start to
the game we slowly started to get more and more
into the match . A great flowing move involving
Sean Foley , Adam o Rourke , Antony Murphy and
David Courtney saw Fergal Maunsel give us the
lead . This was held until half time thanks to some
great goalkeeping by Fionn Coakley . The second
half saw Castleisland throw everything at us and
got level ten minutes into the second half . Two
wonder strikes saw then extend their lead mid
way through the second half . Castleisland have
their keeper to thank for keeping their lead as he

Training: It’s been a mixed week for training
in Fenit with the water temperature dropping
back on Saturday along with a cold northerly
wind . Then along came Sunday evening with
warm sunshine and very comfortable water and
over the afternoon probably 40 swimmers taking
advantage. .
First Swim of the Season: The long awaited
first swim of the season takes place this Thursday
at The Bathing Slip in Fenit . It will be c500 metres
and promises to be a great evening . With our

Dominick Lynch Reaches Senior AllIreland Decider
Dominick Lynch (Glenbeigh) broke a long
barren spell for Kerry Handball at Broadford, Co
Limerick on Friday night last. Lynch became the
first player from the county since 1973 to reach
an All-Ireland Senior Singles final when he
overcame the challenge of Vinny Moran (Mayo)
in the All-Ireland Senior Hardball Singles semifinal.
In an exciting encounter Moran took the first
game 21-18 before Dominick recomposed
himself to take the second with an emphatic
21-5 win to force a deciding game. Lynch and
Moran gave it their all in an attempt to reach
the decider with Lynch edging out a 21-14
victor.
Eoin Kennedy (Dublin) provides the opposition
in the decider which takes place at Cashel, Co.
Tipperary on Friday night at 7.30pm. Dominick
will be bidding to become the first Kerry player
to win an All-Ireland Senior Singles title since
Paddy Downey in 1962.
Jack O’Shea (Glenbeigh) paired off with Dale
Cussack (Cork) to capture the Martin Crowe
Memorial 60x30 Tournament in Broadford,
Co. Limerick on Sunday last. O’Shea/Cussack

Well done to the 27 swimmers who travelled to
UL to compete the Munster Age groups on the
18th -19th of May. Thank you to the coaches
and parents who went up for both days and
helped out in any way they could.
Kingdom Swimming Club held there last B gala
at Tralee Sports Centre on the 24th of May, as
this was the last competition for most of the
swimmers there was a great turn out and a lot
of new times achieved. We would like to thank
all parents who helped out in any way whether
it was in the kitchen or out on deck we would
not be able to run these galas without yere
help. A tremendous amount of food for the
visiting clubs was available and everyone went
home happy.

EXCITING SPIKEBALL IN BEAUFORT!
On Sunday last, we had the County Final of
the Community Games Under 14 Spikeball
competition for girls and boys. This was held
in the Glenbeigh Hall and we were treated to
some very exciting and close games.
In the girls competition, which was played
in round robin format, Castlegregory won
the bronze medals defeating Rathmore/
Gneeveguilla who received the certs. In a
very exciting final, the home side Glenbeigh/
Glencar claimed the county title and gold
medals with 26-21 & 24-22 victory over Fossa
who received the silver medals. Results: 1.

In the boys competition, three teams competed
in round robin format and again we had very
exciting and close games. Glenbeigh/Glencar

victory over Fossa who received the silver
medals. Results: 1. Rathmore/Gneeveguilla; 2.

Both Glenbeigh/Glencar (Girls) and Rathmore/
Gneeveguila (Boys), our winning teams, will
now represent Kerry at the provincial finals in
the U.L. on the 5th July.

Our run in the Tucker Kelly Cup finally
ended at the hands of national cup finalists
St Brendan’s Park in blustery conditions
last Thursday evening in Fenit. The strong
crosswind made it difficult to get the ball
down and play but both teams did very well
to serve up an entertaining game. We had as
expected less of the ball than our opponents
but we were compact in defence and kept
them at arms length from our goals for a lot of
the game. Indeed we were one up at half time
after a defensive lapse by the Park let Oisin
O’Brien in and he made no mistake. In the
second half the bigger Park team got more to
grips with the elements and as the half wore
on we tired a little but that was enough and
they forced two goals after 15 minutes. We got
more into it then but we just couldn’t get past
a solid defence. They scored a third goal after
25 minutes after some untypical defending
by us on our endline. They quickly added a
fourth on the counter as we pushed on but
eventually we got our reward after Thomas
Lenihan and Bobby O’Regan combined to
play a beautifully weighted pass just beyond
their defence. Christopher Murphy despite
having cramp was on to it like quicksilver
and dinked it over the advancing keeper and
tapped it in to the empty net. We conceded
another in the last minute needlessly but
it is hard to apportion blame as everybody
had given everything they had for the cause.
Well done to all our team for their brave
performance against a good team who no
doubt will be favourites to win the cup. Dara

RSA & AN GARDA SÍOCHÁNA APPEAL FOR PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR
BANK HOLIDAY NATIONAL “SLOW DOWN” DAY 30TH– 31ST MAY
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda
Síochána have appealed to drivers, today Tuesday
27th May, ahead of the June Bank Holiday
weekend to reduce their speed by taking part in
a national ‘Slow Down” day , which will take place
for a 24 hour period, from 7am on Friday 30th –
7am Saturday 31st May 2014.
The call comes as figures show that the June Bank
Holiday has consistently been the most dangerous
weekend over the past two years. Five people lost
their lives and five were seriously injured over the
June Bank Holiday in 2013. Six lost their lives and
11 were seriously injured in 2012.
Speaking at the launch of the joint campaign, Ms.
Moyagh Murdock, Chief Executive, Road Safety
Authority said: “We really want the public to take
extra care when using the roads this weekend.
The June Bank Holiday has been particularly bad
over the last two years. But we are also heading
into this weekend on the back of a really bad May
Bank Holiday when we lost 5 lives on the roads. Of
great concern too is the fact that, nationally, we
seem to be heading in the same direction as last
year. 71 lives have been lost compared to 73 to the
same date last year, and last year was our worst in
seven years.”
“It really is so important to realise that staying
safe on the roads is a continuous effort. We simply
cannot afford to let our guard down. The roads are
going to be very busy this weekend, there are local
festivals, sporting events and people travelling
the length and breadth of the country for a break.
The roads will be busy with people out walking
and cycling. There are more tourists using the
roads and they there will be a big increase in the
number of agricultural vehicles out and about as
farmers begin the first cut of silage this weekend. So I would appeal to everyone to do what you can
to stay safe this weekend. In particular I would
appeal to drivers to slow down, and support
national ‘Slow Down” day by reducing your speed.
Small margins can have a big difference. If a
pedestrian or cyclist is hit at 60km/h they stand
little chance of survival. If hit at 50km/h they have
a 50/50 chance of living.”
Assistant Commissioner John Twomey, Garda
National Traffic Bureau, speaking at the launch in
Garda HQ today said: “Excessive or inappropriate
speed remains a significant contributory factor
in road traffic collisions. Unfortunately, many
drivers believe they are immune to the laws of
physics as over 80,000 fixed charged notices
have already been issued for speeding so far this
year, an increase of over 20% compared to 2013
figures. Of greater concern,
9 out of 10 detections were
made in situations where the
driver was travelling 10km/h
or more above the posted
speed limit. 1 in 10 of those
drivers detected were for
speeds in excess of 30 km/h above the limit. This is
particularly worryingly for pedestrians and cyclists
in 50km/h zones, which were the worst locations
for speeding offences.”
