The change allows players to open 1NT with hands that include a singleton ace, king or queen, as long as they do not also contain a doubleton. Here is the new definition, effective Aug. 1: “A notrump opening or overcall is natural if, by agreement, it contains no void, at most one singleton which must be the A, K or Q and no more than two doubletons. If the hand contains a singleton, it may have no doubleton.” This includes hand patterns such as 5-4-3-1, 6-3-3-1 and 4-4-4-1, in addition to those that were previously allowed, such as 4-3-3-3, 5-3-3-2 and 5-4-2-2. The change was recommended by the Competitions and Conventions Committee, a group of players appointed by the Board, in an effort to bring regulations in line with popular and expert practice, said ACBL Field Manager Sol Weinstein, who supervises tournament directors. Before, opening notrump with a singleton was considered a psych. It was legal to do, but players could not have an agreement to open such hands 1NT or 2NT. The lack of clarity was a thorny issue for directors. “Many players were doing it anyway,” Weinstein said, particularly when a different opening would create a problematic rebid. “They decided it’s not right to have a rule that’s contrary to the way bridge is being played.” The idea of expanding the definition has been discussed for years within the committee, but previous proposals have failed because they lacked the simplicity of the new definition. “The Laws don’t allow you to limit bridge judgment,” Weinstein explained. “Regulations have to conform to the Laws.” The new definition prohibits opening notrump with more shapely hands, such as 5-5 -2-1, 6-4-2-1 or 7-22-2. “All of this has to do with your agreements,” Weinstein noted. “That doesn’t prohibit an out-andout psych, but you can’t keep doing that or it becomes an agreement, and an illegal one at that.” The change does not impact the one allowable exception of a partnership agreement where 1NT is treated as a 100% forcing opening bid (and not considered “natural” with any distribution). The use of such an unbalanced, non-natural 1NT opening must be alerted. 6 Unit 356 Board of Directors Meeting 7-10-2016 Las Candelas Bridge Club Members present were Adair Karlin, Barry Abrahams, Jud Jones, Steve Reynolds, Joan Merrill, Ann Shaylor, Mindy Hawkins, Cindy Shoemaker, Anne Hinge, Betsy O'Dell and D17 Representative Darwin Afdahl. The minutes from the May meeting were approved. There were no comments about the treasurer report from the board. Darwin stated that the next D17 meeting would be in Phoenix. Membership in the unit is up 51 member from the same time last year. Commercial printing - The price for 2 sided 8x10 is about $329.00. Recommendations for future flyers are needed. There were 8 full tables at the last unit game. Verbal communications, Streams, and e-mail blasts can be credited for this. The NLM people often stay for Jared's and Barbara's classes. Fees - Tucson has a very cheap card fee. The fee is now $7.00. There was discussion about a $6.00 unit game fee. It will be discussed after the first of the year. NLM fees are $3.00. Respectfully submitted by Betsy O'Dell July 25, 2016 8 BRIDGE BITES #63 THIRD TIME LUCKY Brian Gunnell Here is a deal which looks pretty simple, but don’t be fooled! We can tell you now that none of the suits breaks impolitely, and yet making 10 tricks may not be as easy as it at first appears. ♠2 ♥ KQJT ♦ QT86 ♣ AQJ9 E-W Vulnerable South West North East 1♦ Pass 1♥ Pass 3♥ Pass 4♥ Pass Pass Pass Dummy West East West led a Spade and Declarer saw an easy route to 10 tricks. He’d get two Spade ruffs in Dummy, added to which there would be three more trump tricks, the ♠A and four Clubs. Seems too easy, what’s the catch? Declarer ♠ AJ5 ♥ 9832 ♦ J7 ♣ K653 The play went: ♠A, Spade ruff, cross to the ♣K, Spade ruff, Heart to East’s Ace, Club won by Dummy, after which Dummy’s last trump was cashed. “Oops!” said Declarer. There was still an enemy trump out, but Declarer could not get back to hand to draw it. Eventually he ran into a Club ruff and that was down one. So, going after the two Spade ruffs in Dummy doesn’t work. How about drawing trumps immediately, planning for just one Spade ruff in Dummy and relying on the Diamonds for a 10 th trick? Nope! The play goes: ♠A, ♥K is ducked by East (good play!), ♥A wins the next trick, Spade return is ruffed on the board. It’s another “Oops!” moment. Now the defense is a step ahead of Declarer, and will score a Spade trick before Declarer can set up his Diamond winner. What is the winning line of play that will avoid a third “Oops!”? To avoid that third “Oops!” Declarer must go to work on the Diamonds at Trick 2. This subtle change in timing leaves the defense with no winning option, and now it is Declarer who is one step ahead of the game. Here is the full deal: ♠2 ♥ KQJT ♦ QT86 ♣ AQJ9 ♠ Q9874 ♥ 75 ♦ K94 ♣ 842 Dummy West Declarer East ♠ KT63 ♥ A64 ♦ A532 ♣ T7 ♠ AJ5 ♥ 9832 ♦ J7 ♣ K653 The first chapter in books on card play invariably says “Draw the defenders’ trumps before they start ruffing your winners”, and then the remaining chapters are dedicated to explaining the numerous exceptions to this rule. Setting up side-suit tricks early is a common such exception. 9 10 11 12 13 WEEKLY CLUB SCHEDULES Club Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Adobe Bridge Club (Jared Boulds Club Manager) 401 E Limberlost 795-2441 adoblebridge@qwestoffice.net www.bridgewebs.com/adobe 1:00pm Open 9.00 am 299’er 9.00 am 199’er 9.00 am 99’er 12:30pm Open & 749 12:30pm Open 12:30pm Open & 749 12:30pm Open & 749 12:30pm Open & 749 9:00am 749 Game 1:00pm Open 1:00pm Inv Canoa 1:00pm Inv Canoa Green Valley Duplicate Bridge Club Games Open to Members and Guests Only (Al Bowman—Club Manager) 3660 S Camino Del Sol albowmangv@cox.net gvbridge.com 1:00pm Inv Canoa High Desert Hands (Carol L Erbeck, Club Manager) 1270 Treasure Road, Pearce 520-559-7894 carol@crazyedoptical.com 12:00pm Mike's Play and Learn Bridge (Michael D Smith, Club Manager) 520-820-1757 5360 E Pima St Tucson AZ 85712 mikesmith55@cox.net 1:00 199'er Mountain View Duplicate Bridge Club (Jo Ann Aiken, Club Manager) 38759 Mountain View Blvd, Saddlebrooke - 818-1727 jotax123@aol.com www.bridgewebs.com/mountainview/ 1:00pm 1:00pm Saguaro Duplicate Bridge Club (Doris Kuzmak, Director/Manager) 600 S La Canada Dr 625-4027 or 237-1959 dldkay@cox.net gvbridge.com Thunder Mountain Bridge Center 240 N Hwy 90 (James Cobis , Club Manager) P.O. box 839, Bisbee, Arizona 85603 or 520-366-1866 jcobisab@gmail.com 12:30pm Open 12:30pm Tucson Charity Bridge (Ruth Houkom, Club Manager) 5360 E Pima Street, Tucson info@tucsoncharitybridge.com OR www.bridgewebs.com/tucsoncharity Bridge Center of Greater Tucson (Al Spaet Club Manager) 16150 N Oracle Road 520-825-2383 info@tucsonbridge.com OR www.tucsonbridge.com Small Slams Bridge Club Open to SaddleBrooke and SaddleBrooke Ranch residents and their guests only (Joyce Honorof Club Manager) SaddleBrooke HOA #1 Activity Center and Clubhouse 64518 Galveston Lane; Tucson, AZ 85739 SmallSlamsBridgeClub@gmail.com www.bridgewebs.com/smallslams/ 12:30pm 12:30pm 749 (Streams) 1.00pm Open & 749 1.00pm 749 12:30pm 12:30pm 749 (Streams) 1.00pm Open & 749 1.00pm Open & 749 9:00am 1:00pm 9:00am 749 (Streams) 1.00pm 749 1.00pm 749 14 SPECIAL EVENTS SCHEDULE — September 2016 Sunday September 4 Monday September 5 Tuesday September 6 Wednesday September 7 AD SFG AD Potluck Thursday Friday Saturday September 1 September 2 September 3 AD SFG MV CC September 8 September 9 September 10 BC CC Unit Wide Championship All Clubs S SFG September 15 September 16 September 17 MV, AD SFG AD CC BC B September 11 September 12 Unit Game Bridge Center Of Greater Tucson September 13 September 14 BC CC AD SFG BC CC GV CC September 18 September 19 September 20 September 21 September 22 Pro-Am Swiss Adobe AD CC MV CG BC Pizza NLM Reg.
