a successful season-opening weekend to host the Bank of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine Classic, Friday, Nov.
20 and Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Coming to Honolulu for the two-day tournament are

The Rainbow Wahine come off of their second-straight 2-0 start on the road after overwhelming
Grand Canyon, 74-41 and holding off Northern Arizona, 61-52 two days later. UH’s explosive 33-point
win over GCU marked its largest margin of victory in a season-opener since the 1997-’98 season
(83-45 vs. St. Bonaventure). Against NAU, UH hit a rough patch in the second half with five in foul
trouble but were able to pull away midway through the fourth quarter. Sophomore Sarah Toeaina led the
Rainbow Wahine throughout the weekend, posting a career-high 14-points both days.
Toeaina leads UH through the first two games, averaging 14.0 points with over 50% accuracy after
shooting 10-18 (.556) FGs, 2-4 (.500) 3pt FGs, and 6-8 (.750) FTs. Sophomore Megan Huff leads the
team in rebounding with 15 rebounds (six offense, nine defense).

RECAPPING THE ‘BOWS...
AT GRAND CANYON: The ‘Bows’ 33-point win marked their largest margin of victory in a season opener since
the 1997-’98 season (83-45 vs. St. Bonaventure). UH overwhelmed the Antelopes clear across the board,
shooting at 42% FG’s, 38% 3-pt FG’s, 88% at the freethrow line, with 10 Rainbow Wahine contributing
points towards the win. The ‘Bows were able to keep GCU at a distance throughout with their trademark defense, out-rebounding them 47-33 and taking 15-points off of forced turnovers. Toeaina (6-8 FGs, 1-1 3-pt
FGs, 1-1 FTs, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) led the Rainbow Wahine with a career-high 14-points.Huff also posted
double-digit figures with 12-points and reached for a game-best eight rebounds. Over half of UH’s points
(48) came from off the bench, including both Toeaina and Huff.
AT NORTHERN ARIZONA: The Lumberjacks inched their way back from a 16-point deficit in the second half.
As five Rainbow Wahine ran into foul trouble, UH gave away nearly half of NAU’s points as the Lumberjacks
shot 80% (24-30) at the free throw line. In spite of a faulty third period, the Rainbow Wahine pulled together
at crunch time to come out on top. With NAU just two-points behind, Toeaina (4-10 FGs, 1-3 3pt FGs, 5-7
FTs, four rebounds, two assists), who matched her career 14-pts, hit a pivotal jumper, ultimately igniting a
solid 11-4 run for the Rainbow Wahine. As the game clock wound down, she cemented the ‘Bows’ 61-52
victory after sinking in three-straight free throws. Destiny King (13pts, three assists) and Huff (seven points,
5-5 FTs) led defensively with seven rebounds apiece, as the ‘Bows were able to box out NAU 43-35. Karaitiana also came through with a game-high four assists, four rebounds, 10 points, including one trey.
RAINBOW WAHINE PICKED TO FINISH FIRST IN BIG WEST:
The University of Hawai’i women’s basketball team was
picked to finish first in the 2015-16 Big West Preseason Media Poll, collecting 147 points, which included 13 first place
votes. The defending Big West regular-season champions
come off a historic 23-win season. This year, reigning Big
West Coach of the Year Laura Beeman returns three starters
and nine letterwinners, including seniors Ashleigh Karaitiana, Destiny King (9.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 2.2 apg), and
sophomore Big West Sixth Woman of the Year and All-Freshman team pick Megan Huff (6.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 25
blk). UC Riverside finished second in the poll with 127 points and two first place votes. The Highlanders also
return a strong squad, highlighted by last year’s Big West Player of the Year Brittany Crain.
KARAITIANA PICKED PRE-SEASON ALL-BIG WEST: Leading the Hawai‘i charge in 2015-16 is returning
starter, senior Ashleigh Karaitiana, who earned All Big-West second-team honors last year and was named to
the 2015-16 Preseason Media All-Conference Team. The redshirt senior unexpectedly received another year
of eligibility by the NCAA in just mid-September finished the 2014-15 season with 10.0 points per game,
5.0 rebounds per game, and 2.5 assists per game. At the start of the season, Karaitiana is just 89-points
shy of reaching the program’s 1,000+ point club. In the first two games she is the team leader in assists
with nine, and has recorded 15 points, including two treys.
BEST IN THE WEST: The Rainbow Wahine currently lead the Big West Conference across three categories.
After the opening week of the season, UH tops the BWC opponents at the free throw line, shooting 34-45
for75.6%. The ‘Bows also dominate the defensive boards with a conference-high 90 rebounds (45.0 rpg)
and rank second in blocks with eight (4.0 blks/g).
DEFENSIVE DOMINATION: Although UH has shown solid performances offensively, the Rainbow Wahine run
a nearly impenetrable defense. In two games they have recorded eight blocks, 13 steals, and 90 rebounds.
They have collected a total of 26 points off of turnovers, 27 second-chance points, and 22 on fast breaks.
KING’S LANDING: Despite not making preseason all-conference, senior forward/guard Destiny King is anticipated to step up into the spotlight as one of the three seasoned seniors this year who first helped re-ignite
the program in 2012 as part of head coach Laura Beeman’s first recruiting class. Along with seniors
Karaitiana and Marissa Wimbley, King, who earned All Big-West Honorable Mention last season, embodies
the spirit and growth of the program within the last three years. Last season, the returning starter proved to
be one of the squad’s most dynamic players, leading the team in rebounding (6.3 rpg) and finishing second
on the team in both scoring (9.8 ppg) and steals (18). In just two games this season, King has been an allaround player with 19 points (9.5 ppg), three steals, four assists, and 13 reboundds (6.5 rpg).

RETURNING PRODUCTION: The Rainbow Wahine lost a key leader to their success the last few years
with the graduation of Shawna-Lei Kuehu. Despite suffering medical hardships during her career,
Kuehu finished last season as one of the most celebrated women’s basketball players in school history,
finishing her career in the top 10 in 13 different categories: No. 8 – 1,234 points; No. 13 – 10.0 points
per game; No. 8 – 482 field goals made; No. 5 – 1,164 field goals attempted; No. 7 – 392 free throws
attempted; No. 8 – 645 total rebounds; No. 10 – 186 offensive rebounds; No. 6 – 459 defensive
rebounds; No. 6 – 125 blocked shots; No. 9 – 161 steals; No. 7 – 3,037 minutes played; No. 1 – 125
games played. Kuehu was the only UH player to be voted to the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic
and the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Shootout all-tournament teams and earned 2015
first-team all-Big West honors. Additionally, the local standout was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player
and is a two-time recipient of the program’s Ah Chew Goo Achievement Award, given to the player who
attained basketball excellence through dedication, determination, and perseverance. She was also voted
UH’s “Rainbow Wahine of the Year” and named Hawai‘i’s 2015 Bonham Award female co-winner which is
given to the top senior student-athlete who “best exemplifies the ideals for which Jack Bonham stood for
in the areas of athletic excellence, academic achievement, public service, leadership and character.” In
her place however, several players have stepped up their game to clear the glass and score points.
Hawai‘i returns seven eight players who saw action last season...here is a breakdown of the returning

2014-15 HIGHLIGHTS:
- The second time in UH history that they’ve seen action in three-straight postseasons. The Rainbow Wahine went to four-straight WNIT’s in 2000, ‘01, ‘02, and ‘03).
- UH notched over 20 wins this season for the first time since 2001-02 with 23 total wins this year. Hawai’i now has hit the 20-win mark 13 times in school history.
- The team’s 15-game win streak was the longest during head coach Laura Beeman’s three-
year tenure. It’s the longest streak since UH won 19-straight in the 1997-98 season.
- UH’s 15-game win streak is the fifth longest in program history. UH won 19-straight games twice in 1992-93 and 1997-98. The ‘Bows won 18-consecutive games in 1993-94 and 16-straight in 1995-96.
- Hawai’i went undefeated in conference at home and has a 15-game home conference win streak dating back to the 2013-14 season going into next year. UH has now gone undefeat
ed in conference seven times (1989-90, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1995-96, 1997-98, 1999-
2000, 2014-15), the first six times were under head coach Vince Goo.
- Kuehu became the 18th player in UH history to join the 1,000 point club and the 10th member of the 1,000 point/500 rebound club as well. She finished her stellar career ranked No. 7 in UH’s all-time scoring record book with 1,245 points and No. 8 in career rebounds with 645. She also is No. 6 in career blocked shots (125); No. 9 in steals (161); No. 10 in offensive rebounds (186) and No. 6 in defensive rebounds (459). The sixth-year senior also ends her career ranked No. 1 in games played with 125 from 2010-2015).
- Morgan Mason and Destiny King both received Big West Player of the Week honors in 2014-
15
- All-Conference awards: King (all-conference honorable mention); Megan Huff (Big West Sixth Player of the Year Award, all-freshman team, and BWC all-tournament team); Ashleigh Karaitiana (all-conference second team); and Kuehu (all-conference first team and BWC all-tournament team honors).
- Head coach Laura Beeman was voted Big West Coach of the Year. It is just the fourth time that a UH women’s basketball coach has received the award--former head coach Vince Goo earned it three times in 1989, ‘93, and ‘94.

LAURA BEEMAN
HEAD COACH
FOURTH SEASON
UC SAN BERNARDINO (1992)
HAWAI‘I RECORD: 59-37
Head coach Laura Beeman returns for her fourth
season at the helm of the defending 2015 Big West champion
Rainbow Wahine basketball team. She and her staff have
revitalized the Hawai‘i program in a flash, leading Hawai‘i
to its first conference title since 1997-98 and three-straight
appearances in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament
(WNIT). In her three short seasons here, she has compiled a
50-37 overall record and a 37-13 mark in the Big West.
Beeman—the 2015 Big West Coach of the Year—guided
the ‘Bows to a Big West-best 14-2 conference record and 23-9
overall mark. The ‘Bows opened the conference season with
a pair of road losses, but went on to reel off 15-straight wins
en route to capturing the regular season crown and a spot in
their third consecutive WNIT tourney. The win streak was UH’s
longest since 1997-98 when Hawai‘i won 19-straight under
former head coach Vince Goo. Overall, UH’s 2014-15 overall
record was the best since the ‘Bows recorded a 23-8 overall
record in 2001-02. Beeman and her crew also posted UH’s
best conference record since 1997-98 when the Rainbow
Wahine went 13-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. To
date, while at UH, Beeman has coached eight All-Big West Selections (First Team-2; Second Team -3; Honorable Mention-3);
three Big West “Sixth Player of the Year” awardees; one BWC
“Defensive Player of the Year”; and two BWC All-Freshman
Team players. This past year, senior Shawna-Lei Kuehu earned
all-Big West first team honors while fellow senior, Ashleigh
Karaitiana was named all-conference second team. Freshman
Megan Huff, who joined the basketball team after finishing her
rookie season on the women’s volleyball team in December,
made an immediate impact and garnered the Big West’s
“Sixth Player of the Year” award as well as all-freshman team
honors. Junior Destiny King was UH’s “utility” player all season
and earned all-league honorable mention honors for her
efforts.
Beeman’s consistent trademark over the past three
seasons has been defense and rebounding. UH finished the
2014-15 season leading the conference in several statistical
categories for the overall season including field-goal percent
defense (.360); rebounding offense (44.1)rebounding margin
(+9.0); blocked shots (3.77); offensive rebounds (15.77) and
defensive rebounds (28.35). In conference action, Hawai‘i
was even more dominant, leading the league in 12 different
statistical categories--including scoring margin (+12.2);
scoring defense (52.1); field goal percent defense (.348) and
rebounding margin (+12.6) to name a few.
One of the passions of Coach Beeman, her staff and
her players has been getting involved in multiple service opportunities to give back to the local communities. The coaches
and players have conducted free basketball clinics to youth
on the North Shore and have spent hours helping at Waikiki
Health’s Youth Outreach (YO!) program working with local
at-risk and homeless youths. The team also sponsored a “YO!”
Sneaker Drive at one of their games last season. The Rainbow
Wahine have participated in the American Cancer Society’s
“Relay for Life”, Special Olympics, and have participated in
several elementary school reading programs.
In her first season, Beeman deftly guided her team
through a difficult pre-season slate—which included the likes
of Baylor, Stanford, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The wicked
schedule prepared the ‘Bows in their return to the Big West
Conference after 16 years in the Western Athletic Conference.
In her first season, Hawai‘i posted a 17-14 overall record—the
first winning season in seven years. The ‘Bows battled hard
in the BWC and finished in a tie for second in the conference
with a 13-5 mark. UH closed the season strong—winning six
of their last seven regular season games. Hawai‘i went 8-1 in
conference home games and tallied its best conference record
since 2001-02. The Rainbow Wahine were able to defeat
all of their conference opponents at least once with series
sweeps over UC Riverside, Long Beach State, UC Davis, and CSU
Northridge. The ‘Bows advanced to the post-season for the first
time in 10 years and for the 12th time in school history. Hawai‘i
players garnered six Big West honors, led by junior post-player
Kamilah Jackson who is the first Rainbow Wahine to earn first
team conference honors since 1995-96. Junior guard/forward
Shawna-Lei Kuehu was voted “Sixth Player of the Year” and was
an Honorable Mention conference player. Junior guard Sydney
Haydel earned “Defensive Player of the Year” and rookie guard
Ashleigh Karaitiana was named to the All-Freshman team as well
as honorable mention honors.
In her second season (2013-14), Beeman and her ‘Bows
posted a 17-14 overall record with a 10-6 conference record
good for third place and another post-season appearance. The
Rainbow Wahine once again had to navigate a challenging
non-conference schedule, notching wins over Washington State,
Ole Miss, Chattanooga and Minnesota. Jackson became just
the second player in Rainbow Wahine history to lead the team in
points and rebounds all four seasons of her career—even while
missing seven games down the stretch of the Big West season.
But in her absence, Hawai‘i banded together to continue to out
rebound their opponents 276-to-219 while Jackson was out—
including a 19-rebound advantage in their win over UC Davis.
UH finished first in the Big West in scoring defense, allowing just
62.8 points per game; first in 3-point field goal defense (.288);
rebounding defense (35.1); rebounding margin overall (+6.0)
and defensive rebounding percentage (.725).
Beeman was formally introduced as the new head
women’s basketball coach at Hawai‘i at a press conference on
March 23 at Les Murakami Stadium. She came to UH with nearly
20 years of coaching experience on the both the collegiate and
professional level. The San Bernardino, Calif., native established
herself as one of the best junior college coaches in the nation
before enjoying similar success as an assistant coach at USC
and with the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks. Beeman, 44, is the
eighth head coach since the program’s inception in 1974 and
the third female head coach in its history.
Beeman spent her final two seasons prior to Hawai‘i at
USC as associate head coach under Michael Cooper where they
re-established the Women of Troy as a PAC-12 power. There she
helped quickly revitalize the program with 42 combined wins in
the last two years. In her first season, the team finished 24-13
and advanced to the WNIT Championship game. The team
ultimately finished with the program’s best record in 17 years.
The Women of Troy garnered an 18-win season his past
year, including a six-game win streak to finish the regular season.
In just two years, Beeman coached nearly a half dozen all-conference players, while also helping put together back-to-back
nationally ranked recruiting classes.
Beeman and Cooper had previously worked together
for the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks in 2008. As an assistant
under Cooper that season, she helped lead the Sparks to the
Western Conference Finals after a one-year absence from the
post-season. While with the Sparks, Beeman coached the No. 1
pick Candace Parker along with veteran All-Stars Lisa Leslie and
DeLisha Milton-Jones.
Prior to her stint with the Trojans, Beeman made her mark
at the junior college level where she enjoyed a phenomenally
successful 15-year run as the head coach at Mt. San Antonio
College (Mt. SAC). There she led the Mounties to 10 conference
championships and four California Community College State
Championships—including a string of three straight from 200608. Beeman was selected conference Coach of the Year four
times and was voted the district and regional coach of the year
in 2001. She led Mt. SAC to a school-best 37-1 record in both the
2007 and 2008 season. During her tenure with the Mounties,
she produced 80 all-conference selections, 24 all-state selections, and 10 all-region selections. Beeman posted a 390-110
(.780) record during her tenure at Mt. SAC.
As a player, Beeman was an All-American guard at Cal
State San Bernardino where she set the career, season and
game assist records. She graduated in 1992 with a degree
in business administration from CS San Bernardino and later
earned a master’s degree in education with an emphasis on
counseling from the University of Redlands. She earned a second master’s degree in education with an emphasis in physical
education from Azuza Pacific University.
