“I believe that art has a moral responsibility,
that it must pursue something higher than
itself. Art must be a part of life. It must exist
in the domain of the common man. It must be
an enriching, ennobling, and vital partner in
the public pursuit of civilization. It should be a
majestic presence in everyday life just as it was
in the past.”
–Frederick Hart

A distinctive rug weaved in the southern part of the
Caucasus, an area located between the Caspian and
the Black Sea. The most interesting features of this
rug are the repeating medallions and the
geometric, curvilinear, zoomorphic, rosette and
star designs. The latch hooks on the diamond
shaped medallion are typical of the Afshari work.
The balance and clarity of the design as well as
its structure and dense knotting makes this an
important and well collectible piece.

PHP 950,000 1,000,000
The city of Kashan lies in the central area of Persia
(Iran). The standards set by the Kashan weavers
between 1900 and 1950 were hinged on the
balance they achieved between the unity of all the
elements of structure, color and design. One of the
key factors in the recognition of the Kashan carpets
is the richness of coloring. Highly decorative,
the carpets are extremely dense and woven in the
Persian knot. This particular carpet has 290 knots
per square inch, making it an exceptionally fine
example of Kashan quality.

‘DIEZ PESOS FUERTES’ BANK NOTE

PHP 90,000 - 110,000
Issued 1 January 1865, serial number
010201, black on cream watermarked
paper, counterfoils, crowned portrait of
Queen Isabel II at top centre, flanked
by values, marked ‘PLATA’ verso,
minuscule tear at fold marks centre,
tear on left counterfoil
The Philippine Peso was established
on May 1, 1852, when the Banco
EspañolF ilipino de Isabel II, the first
commercial bank in the Philippines
and now the Bank of the Philippine
Islands, introduced notes denominated
in pesos fuertes (strong pesos, written
PF). This very rare bank note is one of
only 1,000 ‘Diez Pesos Fuertes’ to have
been printed, and it is not known how
many survive to this day. The series
depicting the portrait of Isabel II was
discontinued in 1868 when the queen
was deposed, and the bank changed its
name to El Banco Español Filipino

A fine example of the most
important 19th century
Philippine map based on
scientific surveys of its
topography. The lithographic
plates with original hand
coloring were issued
separately over 3 years. The
Primera Hoja focuses on
Luzon and features detailed
insets of Manila and its
environs, the Segunda Hoja
covers the Visayas and
Mindanao while the third
sheet covers the far north
including Batanes and the
southern outer islands with
an inset of the Philippines
as a whole. Scarborough
Shoal (Panatag Shoal/Bajo
de Masinloc) is named
in the 3rd sheet. This is
one among several maps
put forward to bolster the
Philippine claim to the West
Philippine Sea. This map
is scarce particularly in its
complete 3 parts. It is the
basis of all topographical
Philippine maps that
followed. It is the result of
half a century’s scientific
mapping and hydrographic
surveys that began with
Bauza’s Carta General de
Filipinas of 1792.
Among the maps and prints that remain intact in this two volume set is this selection of fold-out Philippine maps
