Music City Marathon Does It Run Through Your Neighborhood?
On Saturday over 35,000 folks will participate in the
Music City Marathon and ½ Marathon. What a way to see this
great city and get a quick glimpse of many of the downtown
neighborhoods and sites! The Country Music Marathon and ½
Marathon will celebrate its 11th running on April 24, 2010. The
event is internationally recognized as the ultimate tour of Music
City. The runners and spectators get to see some of the best that
Nashville has to offer like the Parthenon at Centennial Park,
Nashville’s world-renown Music Row, and finally, an expansive finish line festival outside the Tennessee Titan’s home, LP
Field located along the Cumberland River.
In addition to the spectators who cheer on the participants, one touch that is uniquely Nashville is the music. The
great bands that are stationed along the way are an essential part
of the vibe. Wave at the band at Site 9 up near Belmont College
at 16th Avenue South and Wedgewood, one of our favorites Ron
Hutchens will be playing keyboard for Jessica Miller and her
band. Natalie Thomas will be at that Site 9, too.
If you always thought you wanted to live in Nashville, you might take a look at the Marathon Map. The race
touches some of the city’s unique neighborhoods. The course
takes you on the edge of Germantown, up by Belmont College,
Belmont/Edgehill Area, Music Row, over near the Gulch, by
downtown lofts and condos, as well as, to East Nashville. One
blogger in talking about the Music City Marathon called it a
wonderful first marathon in a crazy-friendly, hospitable city.
Not sure if that blogger lives here or not, but they are so right
about this city – friendly and hospitable – year round.
People race for different reasons from trying to get a
personal best time, the joy of running, to just hanging out with
family and friends. We have a couple of stories from our Life
Style Real Estate Advisors, Inc.™ family. Our broker Ray
Dwelle, his daughter and son-in-law – Kristin and Vernon
Hurst, and another son-in-law – David Burton will be running
the half marathon. It is Ray’s first but he has been training for
sometime now. He is part of an exercise challenge at Hardaway
Construction, to walk at least 20 minutes a day, three days a
week. Ray averages about eleven miles per week.
Ray started running over a year ago
and loves early morning runs near
where he lives in Gallatin. He says
that it gives him a chance to see
nature and the occasional fellow
runner. After he had been training
for a while, the ½ Marathon seemed
possible and he decided to join his
family. Son-in-law, Vernon Hurst
has run several marathons including
the Boston Marathon. One member of the family will not be
running, Ray’s daughter Beth Burton. A few years ago she was
critically hurt in a car wreck. A walker and runner before the
accident, Beth has had to endure several major surgeries but the
gift is that she will there on Saturday to cheer them on. Ray is
running for Beth.
Did you know that of the 35,000 plus race participants more than 30,000 run the ½ Marathon; the rest completing
the full marathon? In addition, there is a YMCA Country Music
Kid’s Marathon with over 4,000 youth runners from grades K-6
on Friday, April 23, 2010. Shade Eversole, ten years old, whose
father works with us saved his money and paid the $45 entrance
fee. The students log 25.5 miles on their own or with groups
prior to the race day. On Friday, April 23, all the participants
complete their last mile together at LP Field. Shade is in the
fourth grade and is new to Nashville moving with his family
from Florida. Way to go Shade. You are a winner!
At the end of the marathon, the race will be run, but
meeting personal challenges and the friendships made are what
will last long after the last stride has been taken. Maybe Nashville’s own Wilma Rudolph said it best, “Friendships born on
the field of athletic strife
are the real gold of competition. Awards become corroded, friends
gather no dust.”
Congratulations to Ray
and his family, Shade
and all the marathon
participants. We will be
cheering you on.

“You sometimes hear Nashville referred to – and not
just in song - as the “biggest” small town in America. I find that to be true, and that’s one of the many
things I love about Nashville. Few cities offer the
diversity of Nashville’s cultural and entertainment
offerings, while simultaneously possessing a strong
sense of identity and community that you just don’t
find in most major American cities. For anyone who
loves music and entertainment, there are few better
places to be.”

Weekly Quote
“Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence
of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion. The
potential for greatness lives within each of us.”
Wilma Rudolph
Local Hero — Wilma Rudolph
On a week when thousands of runners fill the
streets of Nashville it is
natural to remember a
woman who rose above
all odds to become both a
local, national, and international hero and star.
Wilma Glodean Rudolph
was born in 1940 in
Clarksville, Tennessee, a
premature baby she only
weighed four and a half
pounds, and she was welcomed into the world by nineteen siblings. By the age of four Wilma
had contracted infantile paralysis a form of polio which left her leg and
foot twisted and frail. For years she wore leg braces and her brothers
and sisters helped her taking them on and off. In 1952, at the age of
twelve, Wilma Rudolph finally achieved her dream of walking and
running like other children.
Wilma was a natural athlete and followed her sister
Yolanda’s footsteps as a basketball player. While Wilma was in high
school she was discovered by the Tennessee State track and field coach
Edward S. Temple. It was her major break and by the time she was
sixteen years old she had earned a berth on the U. S. Olympic track and
field team.
On September 7, 1960, at the Summer Olympics in Rome,
Wilma became the first American woman ever to win three gold medals. She won the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and ran the anchor on the 400-meter relay team. It was 110 degrees that day and
Wilma ran on a sprained ankle. After her triumphs, the twenty year old
who had overcome so much just to walk, was hailed throughout the
world as “the fastest woman in history.”
Wilma won many honors, among them:
United Press Athlete of the Year 1960
Assoc. Press Woman Athlete of the
Year 1960
Roger Maris and Wilma Rudolph – Associated Press Athletes of the Year

We leave you with some quotes from
Wilma Glodean Rudolph
6.23.1940 – 10.12.94
“My doctors told me I would never walk again. My mother said I
would. I believed my mother.”
“I ran and ran and ran every day, and I acquired this sense of determination, this sense of spirit that I would never, never give up; no matter
what else happened.”
“I tell them that the most important aspect is to be yourself, and have
confidence in yourself. I remind them that triumph can’t be had without the struggles.”
FOOD
Fox’s Donut
Den
Sign before it was restored- top building
With all that running
you will be doing this weekend you may want to load up on some carbs
and what better place to do that than one of Nashville’s most loved traditions, Fox’s Donut Den? The donuts are wonderful!
The Donut Den has been serving up great pastries and donuts for over 30
years. In 2009 Fox’s Donut Den was the center of controversy over their
landmark neon donut sign. When it was taken down for restoration, it
suddenly became victim to a Green Hills sign ordinance that had been
passed in 2003. The uproar was so great from locals that a near revolt
occurred with “Save the Donut Den Sign” campaigns springing up all over
town. In the end the majority ruled and the sign went back up where it
belongs.

Original was on top of building.
