The Miramichi Region’s notoriety is its salmon fishing. Outfitters located along the many
branches of Miramichi River offer a variety of packages for the ultimate fishing vacation.
Cast your line for a day or two, or a week alongside experienced guides (40-41,46). Also,
the sport of bass fishing has gained popularity. Plan to be in the Miramichi from May 27-29
for a chance to hook your bass. You could be the winner of the 2016 Miramichi Striper Cup!
Enjoy the rich cultural experiences that allow you to discover the heritage of the Miramichi
people. Travel back through time on a boat tour to Beaubears Island (13,15). Costumed
guides tell the tales of the Acadians that took refuge at Wilson’s Point and of the shipbuilding
that took place on the island. Have tea at Beaverbrook House and learn about its namesake’s
role in WWII (17). The centuries old legend of the Headless Nun comes to life along the trails
of French Fort Cove (16). Only the brave should dare the dark to hear the harrowing tale of
the nun and the buried treasure she is said to protect.
At Metepenagiag Heritage Park in Red Bank (38, 42), experience the ancient Mi’kmaq culture
and view archaeological finds dating back over 3000 years. Walk along the trails and gather
fresh ingredients for tea. Enjoy a traditional meal including bread baked in the sand. Travel to
Bartibog Bridge and take a horse and carriage ride to tour the grounds of MacDonald Farm
(51, 54). Costumed interpreters perform the daily chores of this 19th century Scottish settler’s
homestead. Learn the bygone art of weaving at the Doak House (38, 42) and tour the Squire’s
historic home.

There’s no better way to embrace all that’s Miramichi than by spending a day on the river.
Miramichi River Boat Tours (14, 15) offer daily 90-minute sailings aboard the double-decker
Max Aitken. The colourful Acadian captain, Azade Haché, shares stories of the past as you
enjoy the view. For a fun, relaxing family activity rent a tube at Stewart’s Tubing (41) and
float along the river. For the beach lovers, travel to Escuminac (63) to soak in the sun, sand
and water along Miramichi Bay. Make a one of a kind craft from treasures found while
beachcombing (61) and visit the wharf to hear about the perilous storm that claimed the lives
of 35 fishermen from this close-knit community. (61)
A great way to meet lots of friendly folk is at one of our many festivals. The Miramichi Rock ‘n’
Roll Festival and Canada’s Irish Festival in July and the longest standing Miramichi Folksong
Festival in early August are three popular summer events. There’s also the Napan Agricultural
Show, Powwows, and the Lumbermen’s Competition. Check out the full schedule! (5-9)
Relive your childhood by sleeping in a treehouse or camp out in a tipi. Enjoy an overnight
stay in one of our comfortable hotel rooms overlooking the river, at a quaint inn, a bed and
breakfast, or a campground.
Salmon, lobster and other fresh seafood are on the menu at many of our restaurants.
From full service dining rooms to intimate cafés and patios, there’s a menu choice to satisfy
every palate. Take a vineyard tour and sample local wines (52) or help prepare a traditional
aboriginal meal. (38)

MIDDLE ISLAND IRISH HISTORICAL PARK
One of the most thought-provoking historical parks, Middle Island is located approximately
2 km east of the Historic Chatham Business District, accessible via a short causeway. Early
records recount that the Island was known by the Mi’kmaq name, “Hiksenogowakun”,
meaning place for sick people. It was also named Hospital Island in relation to its use as
a quarantine station. In 1873, Middle Island was designated as the site for a permanent
quarantine station, and remained so until 1948. A. D. Shirreff called it “Barrataria” when he
established a fishing business there in 1827. 2345 Water Street. May 9 to October 7, daily from 8
a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; summer hours 8 a.m. - dusk. middleislandmiramichi.com | 506-773-7505

WILSON’S POINT
This remarkable site is a must see! It is of great significance to the history of Miramichi,
dedicated to the early Scottish settlers who established the first English-speaking settlement
at Wilson’s Point in 1765. They also built St. James Presbyterian Church in 1790, the first
Protestant Church in the area. The old Presbyterian Church graveyard has been preserved
and headstones date back to the 1700s. Enjoy a replica of the original church that houses an
interpretive centre as well as a traditional trading post. Enclosure Campground, in Derby Junction,
junction of Routes 8 and 108 June to early September, off-season by appointment. wilsonspoint.com

TRAILS
BEAUBEARS ISLAND TRAILS
Approximately 3.2-km (2 mi.) of historic trails along the Island’s perimeter have been restored
for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The trails meet the central Island trail opposite Wilson’s
Point. The tour boat will visit the Island hourly between 10am – 1pm and 4-6pm, daily from
June to September, providing plenty of access to the Island’s scenic majesty. While strolling
along, take the opportunity to view the remnants of the shipyard’s slips, and the foundations
of several buildings. Marvel at the lofty pines which have stood sentinel for more than two
centuries, and keep watch for the Island’s abundant wildlife, including a family of bald eagles.
FRENCH FORT COVE TRAIL
Meander a 4-km (2.5-mi.) trail beginning on the corner of Cove Road and King George
Highway (Route 8), circling the historic French Fort Cove. A very nice scenic trail with many
lookouts. A beaver colony can be seen busy at work and the call of the loons is often heard. If
you’re brave, you can Dare the Dark with the Headless Nun on Monday, Wednesday or Friday
evenings in July and August. Check out the details on page
LOGGIEVILLE TO CHATHAM TRAIL
The scenic Miramichi River can be seen from numerous points along the trail, as well as a
wide variety of wildlife and wildflowers. This 8-km (5-mi.) crushed gravel trail built along an
abandoned railway has two different entry points. This trail is a must-see in the fall when it is
lined with trees in a spectacular array of colours! You can enter the trail at the corner of Wellington
and Water Streets or Manse Street.
MILLBANK TRAIL
Curve your way through several nature trails and picnic areas uniquely carved through a
mixed forest, with numerous springs and a babbling brook. Exploring these captivating
walking trails will prove to be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Located off McHardy Road or
off King George Highway.
STRAWBERRY MARSH TRAIL
This trail runs along the Miramichi River through marshland abundant with waterfowl in a
rolling sea of marsh grass. View Beaubears Island and its stately pine trees just offshore, as it
sits majestically in the Miramichi River. Be on the lookout for a bald eagle! This 2-km (1.2-mi.)
cleared trail with a crushed rock surface begins on King George Hoghway, beside Towne Mazda.

NELSON HOLLOW BRIDGE
The Nelson Hollow Bridge is believed to be the oldest covered bridge in New Brunswick
and the only remaining covered bridge still standing in Northumberland County, it is
located between Boiestown and Doaktown, over a small brook named “Mill Brook”. It is the
only bridge in the province to have a cottage-style roof. The bridge was first constructed
in 1870 and rebuilt in 1899. It is 24.5 m long and spans Betts Mill Brook, about 4 km west
of Doaktown. In 1977 it was restored by the Doaktown Historical Society. The view is
spectacular as you walk across this amazing structure and you might even steal a kiss.

PRICEVILLE FOOTBRIDGE
The Priceville Footbridge is one of the great wonders of the Miramichi. Allow yourself to
travel back through time on this suspension footbridge, which spans the mystical waters
of the Miramichi River, joining the communities of Priceville and McNamee; commonly
known as the “swinging” footbridge. On May 10, 1939, tragedy befell these communities
when the Miramichi River was in full flood and the middle of the footbridge hung only a few
inches above the water. The suspension bridge was caught by flowing ice and flipped over,
breaking the supporting cables. Check out the rest of its history at the bridge.
Exit Route 8 at the Holt Road; follow the Holt Road for approximately 1.4 km (0.87 mi.) before turning
right on the Carrolls Crossing Road approximately 0.6 km (0.37 mi.), then on to the McNamee Road.

when “lumberjacks” were the “kings of the forest” and loggers filled our towns. You’ll be
introduced to the tools of the lumberman’s trade such as the log yard, log drive, cork boots,
and the mighty peavey and axe. The Cookhouse-Bunkhouse-Dingle and the Trapper’s Cabin

DOAK HOUSE
The Doak Historic Site commemorates Scottish entrepreneur Robert Doak and his family
who moved to the Upper Miramichi River area in the early 1820s. Here he established a
carding mill, a grist mill and a sawmill as well as becoming heavily involved in the affairs of his
adopted community. Such was the respect afforded “Squire” Doak by local residents that in
1854 when a new roadway was built linking the community with Fredericton and Newcastle,
the village was renamed “Doaktown” in his honour. Visit the Doak House and note the
architectural importance of its buildings and the richness of its original furniture preserved by
several generations of the Doak Family. 386 Main Street, Doaktown. July 1 to September 6: Monday
