On The Horizon STARFLEET KAG UNITED FEDERATED December PLANETS December 2015 DECEMBER 2015 NASA spies a lightsaber in space The force appears to be awakening in our galaxy. A NASA telescope has spotted what the agency says looks like "a cosmic, double-bladed lightsaber." IN THIS ISSUE: Captains Log 2 Drunk or Treat 8 XOs Report 9 Engineer’s Log 10 Flight Control 13 Star Trek News 14 Star Wars News 16 Tactical Officers Log 18 Meeting Minutes 19 Member News 20 It's actually a newborn star that's shooting out twin jets of superheated gas that escapes along the star's spin axis. "Intertwined by magnetic fields, the bipolar jets blast into space at over 100,000 mph," NASA reported Thursday, the same day the new Star Wars movie hits many theaters nationwide. This is not, however, in a galaxy far, far away, but rather inside our home galaxy, the Milky Way. "It’s inside a turbulent birthing ground for new stars known as the Orion B molecular cloud complex, located 1,350 light-years away," NASA said. The image was photographed by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, which is in orbit around the Earth. I decided to try and create a newsletter header for practice and it required my working with the graphics and page design on the mac. Here is the result: I have been told that this can be converted to Photoshop and that it will move over to PC in that format. If so I will be able to pass this over to anyone else wishing to use it. I also made a flyer for my wife’s company that I cannot show here. It turned out well and I will turn my attention to the Horizon flyer next. On a different note, I have had continuing conversations with Danielle and she is coming along great with the 50th anniversary Horizon logo. She tells me it should be available by January. It will show up on the newsletter first but I anticipate that we will have “T” shirts and other gear. Good job so far Danielle! ON THE HORIZON DECEMBER 2015 Finally, I do not have our website and calendar in a Mac format yet. I am leaning in the direction of using a platform that works on both the Mac and the PC so that others can assist or take over the web work if needed. If anyone has any suggestions, please, forward them. Continued on page 3 PAGE 3 CALENDAR For the sake of keeping us all in the loop, I will again discuss our calendars. We have 5 at present. Our calendars are either public or private. This is very important. If you want only Horizon members at a function, then it should go into the Facebook calendar. An example would be if you wanted to invite members to a tea at your home. Please do not place that in the public calendars. Another issue is that you only need to place items in one calendar. Sometimes things will go into 2 calendars in order to get the attention of several groups but we do not need our functions in every calendar. As a result, you will need to check each calendar but it is likely that you will find yourself interested in certain sectors of our group and looking into those calendars. Links to all of them are or will soon be through our site. The Facebook calendar will require a request to me with your Facebook information for access. No one gets into our Facebook page unless a club member for at least 6 months and if we judge them trustworthy. Over the last month I believe that the best item in the last month was “Drunk or Treat.” I have written a special article about that under a separate name. There are so many items in this one function that no one should walk away bored at the end of the day. This function was under Do Deca Events. Another great function was Cosmic Bowling which was joint with the St Louis Meetup. There were about 30 people bowling. Of course there was a ringer who bowled a 200 plus twice. Yours truly had a high score game of 121 but had a cut on the right thumb and had to bowl left handed after that. Average score left handed was 76. Surprising but not good for the overall average. Also high on the list was the joint Thanksgiving dinner that has members of three different Star Trek chapters from 3 different Internationals and the St Louis Meetup. There were some 40 to 50 people at the dinner at Stir Crazy in Olivette, MO. We played trivia and had a wonderful meeting between all of the people. Not to be outdone is the traditional dinner for the chapter that ended up at the CO’s house. Thanks to Rhonda and the wonderful meal. ON THE HORIZON DECEMBER 2015 The fourth big function was the Summit planning meeting in Kansas City, MO. I was not able to make it but have heard that the Summit PAGE 4 is not going to be the traditional Summit. Change is hard, and it is not always what we might want, but the goal is the survival of Summit. What will it take to continue to have Summit? If Jim’s plan is successful it could change the face of Summits forever. Get used to change as it must happen if we are to compete with the newer and more popular fan groups out there. My opinion. While I am cautious about this, I hope it will succeed for all our sakes. I’m glad we can get together in small groups and meet for lunches, dinners and brunches. As a CO who lives 2 hours away from his XO, our command staff meets as much as any other average chapter. Considering that we live in completely different towns, this is not too bad.. This month there were 49 functions. Our use of the Facebook calendar has been phenomenal. Congratulations to the Marines on all their hard work as well. The events under the umbrella of this function change from year to year although some of the best portions are continued each year. The start is around 12:00 or 1:00 pm and the finish is some 12 hours later at 1:00 am. They provide transportation on their bus to avoid the DWI thing but you can follow in a car with a designated driver and a reduced fee. While I have followed in a car before, this year I opted for the bus. I had a great time and the bus is a lot more fun than first blush, even for us old fogies. The function started for many at Hanson Hills camp ground in Kingdom City. Those who wished could camp out starting Friday evening. The partying started a day early for that group. The campout continued for 2 nights. How about a little cooking and sleeping out of doors? Anyone game? I did not make the campout as I already had other plans long before it was announced. They have suggested that it will be continued next year. After everyone was on the bus we made our first stop at the Tropical Liqueurs in downtown Columbia. This is a favorite and has been on the schedule since the first Randy Taylor Horizon Member year. and Event Coordinator This is a very good way to start the trip as their frozen drinks are to die for. They have about 60 different varieties and even have several that are virgin (non-alcoholic.) We spent about 45 minutes there. ON THE HORIZON DECEMBER 2015 Our second stop was for 90 minutes at Laser Lanes. Choices were Laser Tag, Bowling and video games on site. This is a fairly large complex and we had front of the line privileges. I played video games and then had a Margarita. PAGE 7 This stop also featured Jose’ Jalapeno which has the best frozen strawberry Margaritas in Columbia. If you are not into any of the activities, then there is the opportunity to have some Mexican food and a drink or two. Some members enjoyed the drink and food and some enjoyed games and bowling. A new feature this year was “calling ahead.” This kept us completely on schedule, and made the evening smooth. The moderator made sure they were aware we were on the way and the hosts at the next stop moved us to the front of the line and made sure we got done on time. When we left Laser Lanes we went to our third stop at Craft Beer Sellers in downtown Columbia. Again there were options. The first was the beer tasting at Craft Beer Sellers. Some of the group that were not into taste testing beer went into U Kneed Sweets and had various sweets and coffee. A little something for everyone at this stop. I of course ended up at the Sweet Shoppe and had a Peach Ginger scone and coffee. The Beer Celler is a great place and according to those who tasted the beer it was a great sampling. Most of the group had beer and only a few of us went to have sweets. Our fourth stop was at Poe Golf Company or the old Perche Creek. This stop included batting cages, go karts and miniature golf. Again most had a great time and found something to entertain them. This was another 90-minute stop. For some the bus was their hanging out place as there was a cooler on board, but for most we enjoyed the stops and the activities. This was a discounted stop. I played mini golf. How about a 71 on a par 72 course with alcohol. I felt good about this score considering the conditions. I even competed against Spiderman in this contest. Starfleet won! ON THE HORIZON DECEMBER 2015 The fifth stop was Panhead Billy’s BBQ in Kingdom City. The restaurant is an old biker bar that has cleaned itself up to become more family friendly. At least until we showed up. Again, there is a bar and you can drink but why worry about that when they serve up wholesome meals, burgers or BBQ. Everyone got really good food and drink if they wished. PAGE 8 The meals were called ahead and just about ready when we got there. The restaurant had added extra staff to accommodate us. This was a stop last year and I suspect will be again. The sixth stop was Necro Planet haunted house in mid Columbia. This featured two haunted houses. The line here was 4 hours long but we were again rushed to the front of the line to be ticketed only to go to the front of the lines for both haunted houses. One of the two was a little physical and required some crawling and a little more activity but the other was walk through. You could opt out of one or both as you desired. We were done here in about 40 minutes. From the outside you could hear men screaming like little girls and lots of general screaming before entry and knew they were going to get to you in the end. But, just imagine, skipping a four hour line to enter… Consider this as a stop for your fall entertainment for next year. It is a continuing function but needs planning by anyone not from mid-Missouri as this is also homecoming weekend for the University of Missouri. ON THE HORIZON DECEMBER 2015 PAGE 9 The last stop was a Battlecreek Paintball stop in Kingdom City right near the campground. This was an opportunity to shoot zombies by the droves. Again this was a welcome repeat stop and offered finishing fun for the group. It was very late in the evening by this time at 11 pm but many were still going strong. While I was not there for the campfire and concluding camp out this year they continued into the night and then had breakfast as a group the next morning. How about some bacon on the barbie… VAdm Eddie Allen XOs Report November 2015 November 7th four members of the Horizon, which were SFMC members attended the launch of the USS Valiant in Kansas City. The evening was wonderful and contained all the pomp and circumstance that the occasion required, with many chapters across the region attending. Each chapter represented was called and a representative of that chapter was seated. David did a wonderful job of representing the Horizon in his Marine dress uniform. Speeches were given to congratulate the chapter and the crew of the Valiant was introduced to all present. Awards were handed out but the best one was the awarding of the charter for the ship as a full chapter in Star Fleet. Then the U.S.S. Dark Phoenix got up to have their say as the “parent” chapter for the Valiant. Like all good parents the Dark Phoenix cleared out the kids room. Ralph Planthold threw out a teddy bear, blanket and a notebook along with a few other items. Clearing the way so the “kids” cannot move back in. Many jokes were told and much goon natured teasing of the command staff of the Valiant took place. ON THE HORIZON DECEMBER 2015 Many gifts were presented to the Valiant and among them the USS Dark Phoenix gave them some chocolate wine. What else would Sunny give them? Coyote gave them the glasses for the wine and they were presented with a picture of their ship’s logo made from duct tape. I recently finished my book challenge. I have reported on this several times this year. I started in January with a goal of 15 books. I'm already looking forward to starting a new reading challenge in 2016. The exercise challenge did not go as well, although I gave it plenty of thought. I love this time of the year, not the shopping and receiving gifts part, but the spending time with family and getting together with friends part, especially when there's food involved. Thanksgiving was great and I was surprised with a Sweet Potato Pie, my favorite holiday treat, thank you Connie :-). Growing up no holiday was complete without my Mom's Sweet Potato Pie, Peach Cobbler, or Banana Pudding. Most of my favorite television shows are over for the season, releasing me to spend more time to catch up on magazines, sewing, and coloring. I now have 2 adult coloring books. If you still have your inner child in you, I would suggest taking a trip to Barnes & Noble. I hope to get back to doing more sewing next year, as I had put that on the back burner for the last few years. It's almost time to start thinking of new resolutions. I didn't do too bad with the resolutions for this year. I didn't beat myself up over the ones that didn't happen. I embraced happily the ones that I achieved and exceeded. I gave all of it as much as I could and it fell into place right where it was supposed too. Launch of the Valiant Continued from page 9 The Crew of the Valiant presented the Dark Phoenix with a standard of their ships logo on velvet done by Mike Calhoun’s wife. The Valiant also has a velvet standard with their ship’s logo on it. ON THE HORIZON DECEMBER 2015 In true Fleet fashion there was a feast after the ceremony and the food was very good and plentiful. The fellowship during and after the meal was even better. We started the month off strong with a book signing event hosted by two of our newest members, Raz A. Wickham, the author of “Beyond the Edge” and Joe Schlottach, the artist for the book. They hosted the signing at Distant Planet Comics in Columbia, Missouri. Following the book signing members went to the commissioning of the USS Valiant in Kansas City, Missouri at the invitation of Lieutenant Colonel Mike Calhoun. Chief Tactical Officer David Williams stood in as the representing dignitary for the USS Horizon. ON THE HORIZON DECEMBER 2015 The tactical department participated in many gaming events throughout the month of November. On that stood out was the Lantern Corps Game. The Lantern Corps is based on the Green Lantern Comic books from DC Comics. The Lanterns represent exemplars of specific qualities. I have joined it. It closed in mid November. There is a huge discussion about CosPlaySky not doing a good job. In the end it appears that we still have a 15% discount with them. The Region 12 Summit for 2016 will be a gaming convention. There is concern about getting what we are paying for. I cannot promise that but I can say that we, the USS Horizon will have our own functions planned just in case Summit is a bust. Consider it a holiday out of town with friends. There is a discussion about what a chapter in SFI is exactly. Is it only the fleet members or all of the members. Fleet has gone to e voting. Apparently, it is against the rules in N. Carolina but is allowed somehow by means of a gap in their laws. It has been approved by a special team in the state. It will slow down voting but ensure that all are able to vote. The 2017 and 2018 Summit/Picnic/Gathering will be bid beginning on January 1, 2016. St Louis Meetup is having “T” shirts made. Member News November 2015 Members of the Wolf Pack have been very busy this month. They have held weekly and sometimes daily, gaming events. Good fun and good friendships formed and strengthened.. One of the Marines was entertaining a guest from England during November and part of December and David found that he was a Star Trek fan. They began researching chapters in England and found none close to him. Since he has several friends that are also Trek fans he is considering starting a shuttle in his home town across the pond. Great job. Daneille McLeod has been asked by the Region 12 RC to redsign the Region 12 logo for the 50th anniversary. She has also been assigned to do the logo for the 2016 R12 Summit. This all started when Robert Westfall was talking about needing a graphic done and she spoke up that she could do it. She is also working with the USS Discovery to redesign their ship’s logo. Considering the work Daneille has done on the Horizon logo for the 50th anniversary I am sure she will do a great job on all the others logos as well. Carrie Crawford has completed OTS and is now on her way to taking OCC. She was promoted at the Wolf Pack’s December meeting, at Teppanyaki Grill in Jefferson City, to Second LT. The Marines are definitely busy. We now have three with OTS and two with OCC. The sad news was saved for last. Our former member Paula O’Docharty-Rohde passed away on November 30th quite suddenly, leaving behind a husband, two children and many friends. She will be sadly missed and the world will be a poorer place without her cheerful and giving spirit. The Security Department is organizing a Christmas Cookie distribution to the Emergency Services in Callaway County as a thank you for being on the job during the holiday. Rick Williams called the Fulton Police Department, Fulton Fire Department and Callaway County EMT’s and Callaway County Sheriff’s Departments to ask if they would be accepted. The only ones who asked not to receive them were the Fulton Police. They declined because they get so many treats during the holiday season and the officers really try to stay in shape for their job. The Wolf Pack members who live in Jefferson City will take care of the Emergency Services people in the Holts Summit area and the Fulton residents will take care of the Fulton Services persons. The security Department has recruited six new members, Mike Dzicek, Raz Wickham, Joe Schlottach, Michelle William, Will Williams and Amber Kintner. The Wolfpack website is up and running.
