All about
Chatham
One of Cape Cod’s oldest townships, Chatham was settled in 1656 by William and Anne Busby
Nickerson. Incorporated in 1712, the town’s census list now approximates 6,200 residents.
Originally a farming community, Chatham’s inhabitants found deep-sea fishing more lucrative.
Today, small boat deep sea fishing and shell fishing continue as important maritime industries.
Covering an area of approximately 17 square miles, Chatham is a happy combination of
past and present. You will find Chatham to be an old-fashioned and picturesque New England
seaside village, yet offering the best in modern facilities. Surrounded by water on three
sides, Chatham benefits from Mother Nature’s “natural air conditioning” with cool summers,
exquisite autumns, and mild winters. It is a comfortable place in which to live year-round
or visit on vacation.
Chatham operates under the town meeting form of government. The executive officers are
a board of five part-time Selectmen and a Town Manager. The citizens of Chatham enjoy
the special benefits of forward- looking zoning and planning, and both public and private
conservation efforts.

Weather
SUMMER
Chatham lies at the “elbow” of the Cape—at
latitude 41.40 North and longitude 69.58
West. We are fortunate in having navigable
waters on three sides, and, as a result, the
average summer temperature is close to 70
degrees. We do have fogs but they’re rarely cold
in summer. They are a boon to our gardens and
usually yield to the sun by noon. Chatham
fogs are just one more “conversation piece.”
WINTER
Our average winter temperature is about ten
degrees warmer than on the mainland. We do
get an occasional fall of snow which doesn’t last.
AUTUMN & INDIAN SUMMER
This is one of our finest seasons, growing more
popular each year. The water is never bluer than
in October, the air is bracing and dry, the scenery
at its best with the sharpest colors of the year.
Swimming in September or early October is
not too cold for hardy folk.
SPRING
March to May is our spring and we expect the
thermometer to read in the upper thirties to low
fifties most of the time. But when June comes, it
“Busts Out All Over.” The waters of Pleasant
Bay sparkle and soon our famous roses and early
flowers are in bloom everywhere.
Indian Summer lingers through September,
October, and well into November—a succession of glorious days and cool evenings. It’s an

uncrowded time for tennis and golf, bicycling
and hiking, beach exploring, sailing and fishing.
It’s all part of Chatham’s Indian Summer.
Come savor it with us!

Beaches with Lifeguards:
Lifeguards are on duty between the hours of
9am-4:30pm. during the season from Friday,
June 25 to Sunday, September 5, 2010.
Harbor and gray seals are the most common
species in Chatham, and can often be seen
resting or hauled-out on rock piles, ledges,
sand bars, and jetties exposed during low tide
around the Chatham shoals from the North
Beach break-through to South Beach and
Monomoy. They’re also found resting on
isolated beaches, in marshes, and on floating docks at all tide stages.
The best time to see seals is within 2 hours
of low tide on a sunny midday afternoon.
Because seals cannot move well on land,
during high tide they position themselves
over submerged jetties. When the tide goes
out they are left exposed, sitting on the jetty
basking in the sun. If left undisturbed, they
will stay on the rocks until the tide comes
in again. If conditions are right, approximately 1,500 to 2,000 seals can be seen in
the afternoons at Monomoy Island.
There are several local companies offering
exciting seal tours along the beautiful
Chatham Harbor waterways between North
Beach, Chatham Light, and the Break.

The Cape League is partially funded by

From an international competition with about
100 entrants, the committee narrowed the
selection to a final three which were submitted to our fishing community for a final
selection. The winning choice was designed
by Sig Purwin – an artist and sculptor from

features a strong hand pulling a fishing net

You will find few spots on the entire East Coast
of North America that can equal the view at
“The Light.” Drive down Main Street to the

state as you gaze over the majestic Atlantic.

problems on the water.
There are 44 steps and a ladder to ascend
to the top. Due to safety considerations,
children under 5 years of age are not
permitted on the tour. Reservations are not
required. Tours are free and are conducted
by the Chatham Flotilla 11-01, U.S. Coast

CHATHAM’S OLD GRIST MILL
Located near Chase Park, off Shattuck
Place, this mill was built in 1797 by Col.
Benjamin Godfrey to grind corn using only
wind power. A wind speed of at least 20
miles per hour was necessary to do the job,
and when the wind topped 25 miles per
hour the miller had to either “reef ” his sails
or cease grinding that day.
Visit the monument at the Chatham Fish Pier.
It shows our pride in the people of our fishing
industry – the proud, independent providers
to the world of the Atlantic’s best seafood!
FISH PIER
The Chatham Fish Pier, at the corner of
Shore Road and Barcliff Avenue on Aunt
Lydia’s Cove, is a constant source of interest
to our summer visitors. The members of the
fishing fleet make their run each suitable
day to the fishing grounds from 3 to 100
miles off Chatham. Their catch consists of
haddock, cod, flounder, lobster, pollack,
dogfish and halibut. The fresh fish is placed
in ice and transported in refrigerated trucks
to the New York, Boston, New Bedford, and
local markets, arriving less than 24 hours
from the time it is taken from the ocean.
The boats start returning to the pier shortly
after noon, depending upon the tide. You
may watch from the visitors’ balcony – be

The mill was a gift to the town from Mr.

The Mayo House
ATWOOD HOUSE MUSEUM
The Atwood House Museum at 347 Stage
Harbor Road is owned and run by The
Chatham Historical Society. The original
part of the museum is a house built in 1752
by Captain Joseph Atwood when he was a
subject of George II of England. Because the
old house was occupied by the
Atwood family until 1923 and
acquired by the Historical
Society in 1925, it has remained
unchanged since the time it was
built. It therefore provides an
excellent view into the way of
life during the 18th and 19th
centuries in New England.
To house the Historical Society
collections, several wings have
been added to the original
structure, with the latest expansion occurring between 2003
and 2005. Today there are eight

spacious galleries housing art, artifacts, and
decorative arts portraying life on Cape Cod
since the 17th century. Illustrating Chatham’s
seagoing experience, there is a portrait
gallery of notable sea captains of the 19th
century and a maritime gallery featuring
paintings of Chatham ships, as well as nautical equipment. One of the highlights of the
museum is the mural barn that houses the
nationally known portraits of 130 townspeople painted by Alice Stallknecht between
1932 and 1945. Capturing the life and
struggles of town residents during that period,
a guide relates many fascinating stories about
those portrayed. One of the newest galleries
is devoted to the history of fishing in the
Chatham area and traces the evolution of the
fishing industry on Cape Cod through objects,
paintings, and photographs. Of special interest
to many are the cranberry growing, salt works,
and other trades. Also on the grounds is the
Nickerson North Beach Camp built in 1947
that was moved, with all of the contents
intact, to save it from being washed into the
sea as the beach eroded, and the working
lighthouse lantern room of one of Chatham’s
last twin lights, with Fresnel lens.
Hundreds of interesting antiques are displayed
in the 17 display rooms, providing something
for all art lovers, history buffs, students, and
lovers of Chatham and Cape Cod, no matter
what their age. Although a complete tour
requires about two hours, those with less time
may visit selected sections of the museum.
There is also a book and gift shop, stocked
with items relating to the museum’s collections.

RAILROAD MUSEUM
It is located in the old Chatham Railroad

parking space at the door. As listed in the
National Register of Historical Places, this

of historical significance in the railroad field,
plus models and objects which never fail to
interest the visitors.
The fully restored 100-year old caboose, the
gift of the New York Central System, is open
for all to enjoy the sounds of the rails. Young
and old will enjoy this “Home on Wheels”
of the railroad train crews.
The diorama of the Chatham yards of about
1915 is a “must see” exhibit. Museum can be

In the summer
of 2010, the
Chatham Marconi
Maritime Center plans to
welcome visitors to its Museum and Education
Center located at 847 Orleans Road (Route
28) overlooking Ryder’s Cove in the
Chathamport area of North Chatham. The
Museum is located in the historic Operations
Building built in 1914 by the “wizard of wireless”, Guglielmo Marconi. This station was
part of his visionary wireless network intended
to link America with Europe and Japan.
Under the Radio Corporation of America
(RCA) and known by its call letters WCC, it
was the busiest ship-to-shore station on the
East Coast between 1920 and 1993. Not only
did WCC relay vital messages to ships around
the world, it also provided communications to
brave aviators and bold adventurers---Charles
and Anne Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Howard
Hughes and Admiral Byrd at the South Pole.
Exhibits will include videos about Marconi’s
life and the role of WCC in world events, an
authentic shipboard radio, artifacts from
important periods in WCC’s history, and
opportunity for children to send Morse code
as well as an operational amateur radio station.

The delightful physical characteristics of
Chatham, such as the beaches, marsh and
wetlands, and meadows, have long been
known to our residents and summer visitors.
Preservation of these resources is a benefit to
our economy, our fisheries, wildlife and flora,
a fact now recognized to a greater extent in
the past few years by Federal, State and Local
authorities. Chatham is fortunate in having,
in addition to the town Conservation
Commission, a privately operated organization
in the Chatham Conservation Foundation, Inc.,
(104 Crowell Road, Chatham, MA 02633),
dedicated to the preservation of these valued
areas. The Foundation, chartered in 1962, is
in the hands of eighteen trustees, including
officers, and executive committee, all without salary. Call (508) 945-4084 for infor –
Tuesday and Thursday from 9am-1pm.
Many gifts of wetlands and marshlands have
been donated to this organization and others
obtained by purchase. To date, more than
588 acres have been put into conservation
by the Foundation so they may be enjoyed
by our residents and visitors. Please refer to
the map on pages 48-49 for the starting
points of three trails described on pages 39
and 40.
A highlight of the Foundation’s work in the
field of education is their publication A
Beachcomber’s Botany, with illustrations by
Marcia Gaylord Norman and text by Loren
C. Petry. It is a valuable guide to the interesting plant life in the marshes, along the
shore, and the upland. You will find a copy
of the publication in the public libraries
throughout Cape Cod.
TRAIL #1 Frost Fish Creek Trail
Orleans Road (Route 28), North Chatham.
Heading north toward Orleans, take a left
onto a dirt road, just before the creek runs
under the road. Trail proceeds west along the
creek and marsh. At the end of the trail take
a left and proceed approximately 45 feet and
then take the path up the ridge to return to
the parking area via a ridge path. The ridge
is somewhat difficult walking, so you may
want to retrace the entry route. Woods,
marsh, field plants, and birds; 45 minutes to
1 hour; 16 acres.
TRAIL #2 Barclay Ponds Trail
Old Queen Anne Road and Training Field
Road. The entrance to the trail is at the
Yield sign, 20 feet south of telephone pole
#38 in the intersection. Park in the field
(Crowell’s Pit) north of the entrance. A
quiet, woodsy walk, up and down hill.
Approximately 1/2 hour; 12 acres.
TRAIL #3 Honeysuckle Lane, off Stage
Harbor Road At the bottom of the hill, on
the left side of the road are two short trails
leading to the Old Ice Pond. Many water
birds are generally seen in this area. The right
side of the road near a telephone pole and
alongside a narrow stream is a short walk
featuring white cedar trees, leading to other
trails in and around Cedar Swamp, which is
mostly owned by the Town of Chatham.
MONOMOY WILDLIFE
SANCTUARY
Chatham is a mecca for bird enthusiasts. In
autumn, Cape Cod is a veritable tap for birds
of numerous species. Its temperate climate
attracts many birds through the winter when
most have winged south.
The summer months see the migration at its
height. Chatham and Monomoy Island, affords
unexcelled opportunity to observe many species,
both rare and common. Nearly every species
recorded from New England has been seen
at some time in this area. The Monomoy
National Wildlife Refuge is a link in the chain
of migratory waterfowl refuges along the Atlantic
Flyway. Access is available by car, by a short
boat trip from Chatham. Local boat charters
are available. (See “Boats” and “Boat Rides”)
The refuge provides nesting, feeding, and
resting grounds for a known 285 species. This
is one of the most famous and productive
ornithological points on the Atlantic seaboard.

PARKS
The Park and Recreation Commission has
jurisdiction over several parks in Chatham.
The charm of Kate Gould Park, near the
center of town, is enhanced on Friday
evenings during July and August when as
many as 6,000 people gather for concerts by

the widely known Chatham Band at Whit
Tileston Band Stand.
Chase Park, on Cross Street, includes the
Grist Mill and also contains a bowling
green, picnic tables, and a comfort station.
Adjoining the traffic rotary on Main Street
is the William Nickerson Memorial Park.
On the site of a former commercial building, the park was a joint effort of the town,
the Chatham Improvement Association, and

dining
Recognized as home to one of Cape Cod’s most prolific fishing fleets,
Chatham is well known for its fresh fish and seafood. While many
restaurants feature the “catch of the day” and other local favorites, there
is no lack of other fare, including Italian, French, Continental, Asian
and, of course, good old traditional American.
DINING
DINING
Dining in most establishments is casual; and while shoes and shirts are
always required, the need for a jacket and tie is rare. Most restaurants
do not accept reservations in season, but they generally do honor major
credit cards.
On pages 71 and 92, you will find a list of dining establishments in the
Chatham area. The information presented is designed to serve as a guide
only; and while we have made every attempt to verify the facts, you
should always check with the individual establishments regarding
reservations and other details.
