I wanted to share an experience with you. I met Laura Lander,
from Laura Lander Massage, at one of the networking events
at the TCC Club...I think it was back in September or October
2012...not 100% sure. For the last 13 years, I had been very dedicated to another massage therapist. However, my long-time
masseuse recently relocated out of the area, and so I needed to
find someone new. Finding a massage therapist is a big deal, at
least to me, as it is really important that they understand their
vocation well and have some life experience behind them so as
to understand the needs of their clients. Lori Mateikat, association manager, lorimateikat@towneproperties.com
Judy Reis, administrative assistant, judyr@towneproperties.com
As I was contemplating where to find a new therapist, I
remembered seeing Laura's name in the TC Life Magazine,
Best to you always,
Colette Ridge

She owns her office space, so you are greeted by Laura right
when you walk in, which I thought was a nice change of pace
from all the different employees you might encounter when
going to a salon for a massage. My overall experience was great - she is an excellent masseuse
that I highly recommend for people to visit.

Sincere Condolences
We offer our sincere condolences to the Cross family. Daughter,
Natalie Cross, passed away on March 28th. Our prayers go out
to the family, friends and community during this difficult time.
Rich and Wrenda, owners of Sleigh Bells Christmas & Gifts, and staff.
Sleigh Bells Christmas & Gifts, in
Walton, Kentucky, has only been open
since September of 2012, but the
image itself has been in movement for
years. The owners, Rich and Wrenda,
decided years ago that they would
one day open up a Christmas and gift
store, and call it Sleigh Bells. When
opportunity came, they jumped right
on it and made their dream come true.
It’s a family-run business and they take
care in searching for unique gift items
and home décor that you would not
find many places. They chose Walton as
their location because it’s a small town
feel with a big town heart. Being the
only Christmas store of this grandeur
in Northern Kentucky, it makes the
perfect day trip from Lexington/
Louisville area or Cincinnati.
Don’t be misled by the name, however.
Sleigh Bells is “A Store for All Seasons”
and for any special occasion. Sleigh
Bells has almost everything you can
imagine. Many of the products are
made in the USA, which means great
quality. Much of the store is dedicated
to everyday gifts and home decor with
new merchandise often. Check out the
store for that perfect hostess, wedding,
baby, retirement or birthday gift.
There will be some Christmas year-round
in the store, such as Christopher Radko
ornaments, Lynn Haney and Mark Roberts
Santas, unique nativities and many themed
ornaments that can be personalized.
The store is a must-see. The fixtures
and displays give it a warm home-like
feel. They even have a couple of chairs
in the front area to sit and rest. They
have a gift registry or “wish registry,”
as they call it, and offer lay-away. They
are just 10 minutes from Triple Crown
so it’s easy to make that your place to
shop. Rich and Wrenda, along with
their daughter-in-law Lena, would love
to welcome you and give you some ideas
for any gift occasion.
A group of Triple Crown residents spent
an entertaining evening hearing about
a variety of products and enjoying wine
and appetizers.
“Get out to Sleigh Bells in Walton! It’s
beautiful! And there are so many wonderful things to see and buy!”
Kendall Reynolds
“The shop is a beautiful collection of high
quality gifts and a wide range of price
points. Owners are very warm and passionate.” Marla Humphrey
Christmas & Gifts
“A hidden gem of a gift shop is found
in Walton, KY – called Sleigh Bells.
Don’t let the name mislead you – it offers
wonderful upscale gifts year round –
Candleberry candles, Mudpie children’s
line, Wendell August (hand forged serve
ware), Cinda b handbags, Lynn Haney
Santas and a great selection of Radko
ornaments. Almost everything in the
store is made in the U.S.A.”
Margaret Plowdrey
“I loved all of the unique and different
gifts available. Of course I couldn't leave
without something!” Autumn Short
“Very whimsical and personable, I love
this store! It's definitely on my gift store
list, as well as my home decor list! I also
loved that so many items were made in
America.” Lori Watson
“Thanks for the opportunity to be a part
of a private audience in the Sleigh Bells
Christmas Shop. It was such fun to be
informed about artists and areas from
where many of their American made
items came. The Sleigh Bells Shop is a
real treasure right next door!” Ree Palmer
“What a fabulous store with quite a great
collection! There are so many wonderful
unique things.” Jayne Rauh

Family

By resident Nhien Lange
Hiking in Smoky Mountains, TN 2012
Easter, 2012
Greetings Triple Crown! We are the Lange family: Tim,
Nhien, Emily (10), and Charlie (8). We have lived in Triple
Crown for eight years and have grown strong roots with the
community. Tim is from the Northern KY area and I grew
up in Louisville, KY. We both graduated from the University
of Louisville (U of L) with a Master of Engineering w/
specialization in Math and Computer Science. The city of
Louisville holds a very special place in our hearts as it is
my hometown and where Tim and I met. In fall of 1998,
we married and started our lives together in Independence,
KY. At that time we both worked for Procter and Gamble
in the information technology (IT) department located in
Cincinnati, OH. During our first few years of marriage, we
enjoyed traveling to various beaches, University of Louisville
games, and Australia.
After living in Independence for five years, we decided to
move to Triple Crown and couldn’t be happier with the community and our home. Since moving into our custom-built
home in late 2004, we’ve had our basement finished and taken
on various landscaping projects such as adding patios and
landscape beds. I love to work in my garden, so you may see
me tending to my flower beds and pots. In fact, my neighbors
affectionately call me the “Midnight Potter” because of my
passion for gardening – day or night! And speaking of neighbors, truly, it takes a village to raise a child and thankfully
we have an awesome “village” of neighbors who support each
other in so many ways, big and small.
We feel extremely blessed to have Emily and Charlie in our
lives. Our daughter, Emily, is a sweet, creative, and caring
fifth grader at Shirley Mann Elementary. Whether Emily is
playing her violin, hip-hop dancing, or just hanging out with
her friends, she is always smiling and having fun. Charlie, our
fun-loving, sweet, and charming second grader, always has a
positive attitude and gives 110% to everything he does. Charlie recently received his blue belt in karate and loves all things
baseball. He also enjoys activities outside with his buddies
such as basketball, football and tag.
Tim has been at HP for 10 years and is currently an account
delivery manager leading multiple teams that provide IT services to Procter and Gamble. Tim enjoys golfing, playing soccer
and cycling. I recently left Procter and Gamble after 15-plus
years and am very excited to start my own website business
called langeDIGITAL. I stay active by running, going to Zum-
Emily rehearsing her violin piece for her uncle's wedding, 2011
ba classes, volunteering at the Children’s Home of Northern
KY as a member of the Junior Board, and tutoring math at the
Learning Curve Tutoring Center.
As a family, we love to go camping as it provides a wonderful getaway from the day-to-day grind and quality family time
together. We enjoy taking our pop-up camper to various campgrounds such as Big Bone State Park, Camp Rudolph in Santa
Claus, IN, and the Horse Park in Lexington, KY. We also enjoy
travelling to the beach, where we spend many summer vacations
in Myrtle Beach, SC. We are huge U of L sports fans and cheer
them on every opportunity we have. If you see us out and about
at the pool, working in our yard or taking family walks in the
neighborhood, stop and say “hi,” we would love to get to know
you! May God bless you and your family.

together. The TCHOA has teamed with a contractor to put in
a new kids play area and refurbish the basketball courts. We
anticipate that the residents and their families will be able to
enjoy these new amenities late spring or early summer. Discussions regarding the tennis courts and a new shelter continue. These amenities are costly. One or both may be pushed
into next year or beyond.
Corporate and/or private donations would help immensely and
could be designated for the shelter, tennis courts, or naming
rights to the park. A plaque such as “Courtesy of the Smith
Family” or “Smith Family Tennis Courts” would be installed to
acknowledge the donation.
If interested, please email either Lee Pleiman at leepleiman@
insightbb.com or Lori Mateikat at Towne Properties at
lorimateikat@towneproperties.com.
Working together, we will create a safe, pleasant play experience.
A community jewel and attraction!
We welcome all thoughts and recommendations.

of the month
LookOut Hills Farm
Written by Donna Bray, owner/instructor
For the last five years of my corporate career, I traveled two to
three weeks a month, not leaving much time to enjoy anything.
In December of 2005 I turned 50 and had what my husband classifies as my “midlife crisis.” I was tired of traveling, sitting in airports and sleeping in hotels. I wanted to do something I enjoyed.
So, I decided to start my own business and work with horses. I
acquired my certification as a Walking Horse riding instructor. I
then quit my corporate job in January of 2006, built an eighteenstall barn and indoor riding arena, and created LookOut Hills
Farm. The farm was named in honor of my grandfather and the
farm he had managed for years. The barn was finally finished in
June of 2006, just in time for my daughter to get married in the
new indoor arena. After the wedding, I started boarding horses
and giving riding lessons and have been enjoying life ever since.
G
rowing up in a subdivision, I knew what it was like to be
horse crazy but not able to have your own horse in your
backyard. However, I was lucky: my grandfather managed
a horse farm, LookOut Stud Farm in Ft. Mitchell, KY. So I
could visit every weekend and get my horse fix. This continued
until I graduated high school, started working and got married.
Unfortunately, the marriage did not work out.
I spent the next thirty-plus years working in corporate America.
I finally got enough money together, bought five acres with a
We specialize in teaching beginner riders, four years old to 74
years old. We use gentle Tennessee Walking Horses. Walkers are a versatile breed with a unique gait---they do not trot
(bouncy), they “flat walk”---which rocks you back and forth.
This “flat walk” is a smooth ride, making it easy for the rider
to keep their balance even though the horse is going faster.
This makes it much easier for a young child or older adult to
ride for a long period of time. Tennessee Walkers are known
as the “versatility breed.” They can be used for trail riding,
trail obstacle courses, jumping, western contest riding, or English equitation, and show riding. They can even be taught to
do dressage. Our indoor arena allows us to give lessons year
round. Our outdoor arena can be used in good weather.
We offer riding lessons, horse camps, birthday parties, clinics
for beginners and intermediate riders, take customers to horse
shows, and conduct two Horselovers 4H Groups (4-7 year olds
and 8-14 year olds). We also offer “outings at the farm” for
groups, daycares, and school kids.
We are having an open house event for the kids of Triple
Crown on Saturday, May 11th from noon to 4:00pm. Bring
your children to the farm and let them meet our horses, groom
and ride one of our horses and see how much fun they have!
They won’t want to leave!
We are also having an adult event in the fall, Saturday, September 14th, from noon to 4:00pm. Once the kids are back in
school, it is the adults’ turn to enjoy the horses and go riding.
Come join your friends and see how easy it is to ride and fall in
love with the Tennessee Walking Horses. You may decide to
become a regular rider with your TC friends.

house and a barn and got back to the horse craze. Along the way,
I met my husband, Chuck. He had never been around horses
before but got a crash course after we married. Together we had
two trail horses and rode for fun with friends.
Horses have helped my dreams come true. Let them help you
and your child, too. Come visit us at LookOut Hills Farm.

Summer Safety
By resident Dr. Robin Warner, Pediatrician
May typically means warmer weather, and with
warmer weather, people of all ages start increasing
their outdoor activities. And what better time to talk
about injury prevention and safety?
Bike safety: The CDC estimates that 44.3 million children
and adolescents ride bicycles, yet only 25 percent of children
between the ages of 5 and 14 always wear a helmet. Bicycle
helmets can reduce the risk of a head injury by 85 percent
and brain injury by 88 percent. Bicycles are responsible for
more injuries to children than any other product besides the

car, according to the National SAFE KIDS Campaign. The
rate of bicycle-related injuries in highest for children between
the ages of 5 and 15. So what's the moral of the story? Start
“mandatory” helmet use early, so it becomes second nature,
just like seatbelt use. Also, make sure appropriate footwear is
worn. Bare feet and flip flops don't fare well if one has to stop
suddenly. Lastly, teach children the rules of the road: which
side to ride (not the middle or weaving back and forth), hand
signals for turning, etc.
Water safety: Having done my residency in Orlando, FL, I
saw way too many drownings and near drownings, all of which
were avoidable with one simple premise: APPROPRIATE
PARENTAL SUPERVISION. Last year, I pulled a 2 year old
from the Triple Crown pool after he jumped into water over
his head. Where were the parents? On the other side of the
pool, talking to friends. Lifeguards are a safety net, but can't
possibly keep an eye on everyone. And for those that swim
in ponds/lakes/rivers/oceans - always heed the warnings, and
know your surroundings. After all, there are many non-human
creatures in the water.

his free time he loves to play football and kickball in neighborhood, swim and build unique and elaborate Lego structures with
his friends. Building sessions regularly last several hours! Leo
loves to vacation with the family basically anywhere there is water

so. Don't text and drive! Limit talking on the phone while
driving to urgent matters. Children less than 12 years need to

Toddlers less than 2 years need to be rear facing.

Sun safety: The best time to apply sunscreen is about 30 minutes prior to exposure, so apply before you leave your house.
Re-apply frequently - every two hours. Sunscreen should be
used anytime one is going to be outside for more than 20 minutes, even if it is a cloudy day. Infants less than 6 months of age
should be kept in the shade as much as possible. A minimum
SPF of 15 is recommended, and there isn't a significant difference between 30 and higher. Look for one that protects against
UVA and UVB rays. For those with sensitive skin, I have found
the Blue Lizard brand to work well. Don't forget to protect
the eyes, sunglasses are recommended for all ages. Also, look to
your younger children for cues that they are “done with the sun.”
They don't share the same “sun worshipping” culture that some
adults do, and can become overheated more easily.

worked as a first grade teacher for three
years until starting a family. My husband has worked at Citi for the past 16
years. They have transferred us all over
the country until finally landing here in
Northern Kentucky in August 2005.
Having been heavily involved with a local
charity for six years, I am now the 2013
president of the Junior Board of The
Children’s Home of Northern Kentucky.
We are a group of women who primarily focus our time, energy and resources

more people in the world who are obese
than starving! That is a major concern.
Since obesity is a global problem, we are
taking our products internationally. Our
main product is the nutritional shake.
This shake tastes amazing and is full of all
the nutrients we should be eating every
day! Depending on your health goals,
this shake can be used for extra nutrition for you and your family or used as a
weight loss tool in your journey for better health. In addition, we have amazing
energy drinks for strength, endurance,
focus, and alertness.
I started this business to help create a
healthy lifestyle for my family. If my
children choose to have a shake for a
snack rather than a cookie, than I have
done my job. Even better, I can contribute to our family income doing something I enjoy. Getting paid to help others
become healthy and even lose weight is
very rewarding! I keep a thermos full of
this amazing shake and share with anyone who is around. I have yet to find a
person that didn’t love the taste! Some
benefits of this product are:

• Less than $2 per meal

Educating America’s Youth on Personal Finance
It can be amazing how we require students to take math, English, history, and other classes to graduate high school, but we
ignore essential subjects such as personal finance. Understanding personal finance is crucial to this country’s success, and it
will affect every student throughout his or her life. It’s time we
made personal finance a part of our core curriculum.
How bad is the problem?
In the news, you constantly hear about how awful the savings rate
of the average American is or how the youth of this country have
serious financial problems. Here are some alarming statistics:
• America’s personal savings rate fell to 4 percent in May 2012.i
• One-third of working Americans have less than $1,000
saved; 60 percent have less than $25,000.ii
• Two out of three college graduates owe $24,000 or more in
student loans.iii
• Credit card debt for 25- to 34-year-olds has increased 81
percent during the last two decades.3
Finding a solution
The problem in America is education. Personal finance is simply not being taught at home or in our school systems. In fact,
according to the Council for Economic Education, only 13
states require a personal finance course be taken in order to
graduate high school. Only 14 states require personal finance
courses to be offered in the curriculum. Some of the states
where classes are not required are Colorado, Connecticut,
Delaware, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Nebraska, Ohio, Vermont, and
Washington, among others.iv
We can make a difference
Teaching young people financial basics is common sense as it
is important for everyone in our country to have a good understanding of economics. We have to make better financial decisions both on personal and governmental levels, and we can begin
making a difference by making our voices heard. Start by talking
to your school board and congressional leaders about bringing
personal finance courses to the classroom. At the very least, make
sure you teach your children how to be financially responsible.

Coil And Load… Key to a Powerful Swing
Kitchen Play in Whirlaway
By Wayne A. Oien, PGA
By Resident Pam Porter
There are many keys to a powerful
swing, and my number one focus is to
establish a powerful backswing coil. This
position requires a turn away from the
ball and not a simple lifting of the club
to the top of the back swing. The back
swing coil is further enhanced by the left
foot, which should remain firmly on the

ground. This limits the amount you can
Wayne Oien
turn your hips while still allowing you
to rotate your shoulders as much as possible. At the top of the
back swing, the left shoulder should be lined up directly over
the right knee. This assures the weight has been transferred
and the right leg is “loaded” to push off and start the weight
shift to the down swing.
Some other keys:
1. Move the club away with the shoulders, not the hands.
2.The legs solidly support the upper body.
3.Hold the “L” position (wrist cock) on the downswing until the
hands pass the waist. Then release the hands just before impact.

month, for many reasons. I mean, what’s not to like about a
month that begins and ends with a party? And like all good
gatherings, we celebrate with food, alongside of the fellowship
and fun. So pick a day to rejoice and revel; I’ve included a few
recipes you “may” wish to include in your festivities!
Pick your day, then have a partay:
1st: May Day; 2nd: National Day of Prayer; 3rd: the Oaks
Race; 4th: the Derby; 5th: Cinco de Mayo; 9th: Ascension
Day; 11th: Ron’s Birthday; 12th: Mother’s Day; 15th: My
Birthday (mark this on your calendar LOL); 18th: Armed
continued...
Forces Day; 27th: Memorial Day.

Grilled Peachy-Keen Salsa
Banana Pudding Poke Cake
Pork tenderloin is nearly as lean as skinless chicken breast, and
it grills up beautifully. This simple spice rub gives it loads of
flavor without the calories or wait time of a marinade.
The peachy sweet-tart juicy balance makes for a delightful salsa
that pairs perfectly with the pork. Grill the peaches first to give
them gorgeous grill marks and deepen their flavor. (Also, there
really aren’t that many ingredients. Use FRESH-you will be so
glad you did!)
•
•
•
•
•
1 tsp. ancho chili powder
½ tsp. ground cumin
¼ tsp. each: garlic powder and salt
Pinch of cayenne pepper
1 pork tenderloin (about 1 ¼ lbs.)
Directions:
In a small bowl, combine all the dry ingredients and then rub
the mixture all over the tenderloin. Allow it to then come to
room temperature.
Preheat a grill over medium-high heat. Oil the grill’s surface. Grill tenderloin, turning once or twice. Until a meat
thermometer inserted into the thickest part reads 155
degrees. Probably will take about 20 minutes. Remove
from heat and let rest five minutes before slicing
into half-inch thick slices.
Serves about four, with
my Grilled Peachy-Keen
Salsa. Salud!
•
•
•
•
•
•
2 firm, ripe peaches or nectarines
½ small red onion, finely diced
1/3 C fresh, chopped cilantro leaves
1 tsp. diced jalapeno (OK, I use the kind in the jar, because the real deal makes me nervous)
2 tbsp. fresh lime juice
¼ tsp. each salt and ground black pepper
Directions:
Preheat a grill over medium-high heat, and oil the surface. Cut
each peach in half and remove the pit. Place the peach halves
cut side down and cook until softened slightly and grill marks
are formed, about three minutes. Allow to cool for five minutes,
and then chop.
In a medium bowl, mix the rest of the ingredients, and set aside
to room temperature. Fold in the peaches right before serving
as a salsa with the pork. About four servings.

1 can of Pillsbury Grands Flaky Layers biscuits
1 box of instant vanilla pudding
1 ½C of cinnamon sugar
Oil for frying
A flavor injector (usually found by the marinades and BBQ sauces)
Directions:
Unroll the biscuits and cut them into fourths. Roll each piece
into a ball.
Prepare the instant vanilla pudding according to the directions
and set aside…or feel free to make your own pastry cream!
(***If you want to make these for the Derby, simply substitute
a ¼ C bourbon and a dash or two of crème de menthe into the
total liquid amount called for on the back of the pudding box.
Roll in raw or light brown sugar instead of cinnamon sugar.)
In a medium pot heat up about two inches of canola oil. Place
about four balls at a time into the hot (350 degrees) oil and fry
until both sides are evenly golden.
Straight from the oil, coat the hot poppers in the cinnamon
sugar…and coat them goood!
Carefully inject each popper with
some of the vanilla pudding.
Pile up a gorgeous SnickerDoodle
mountain of them, and enjoy!
Makes 32 pops.
1 (10 oz.) box yellow cake mix with ingredients needed, as per back of cake box (eggs, oil & water)
2 (3.4 oz.) packages instant banana pudding
4 cups milk
1 (8 oz.) tub frozen whipped topping, thawed
20 vanilla wafers, chunkily crushed
Directions:
Pour pudding over cake, taking care to get it into the holes as
much as possible.
Spread it all out and - using the back of the spoon - gently push
pudding down into the holes.
Put the pudding cake into the fridge to set and cool.
Prepare cake mix according to package directions for a 9x13 cake.
Once your cake has completely cooled, spread on whipped topping.
Once cake comes out of the oven, allow it to cool for just a
couple of minutes.
If you haven't done so already, crush your vanilla wafers. (I just
place mine in a zip-seal bag and crush them with a rolling pin.
Leave some of the pieces big. It's nice to have a bit of a crunch
when you eat the cake.)
Then, with a wooden spoon handle or some other similarlysized object, begin poking holes in the cake. You want the holes
to be fairly big so that the pudding has plenty of room to get
down in there.
In a bowl, whisk together instant pudding with four cups milk.
Stir until all the lumps are gone. Let the
pudding sit for just about four minutes,
so it has just slightly begun to thicken but not fully set; it should still
be easily pourable.
Spread crushed wafers onto the top of the cake. You can do this
part immediately before serving the cake if you like. This will
ensure the wafers are crunchy when you serve it.
I think this cake gets more delicious
over time. To me, it's even better the
next day so it's a great dessert to make
ahead of time. Serve with freshly
sliced bananas. Keep refrigerated.
