650-738-8648 www.SpindriftSchool.org THE SPOTLIGHT Volume 5, Issue III Fall 2009 SEUSSICAL the MUSIC al “After all those years being stuck on a page. Did you ever imagine you’d see me onstage? Now I’m here, there is no telling what may ensue! No, there’s no telling what! But I’ll give you a clue…” So says the mischievous Cat in the Hat at the onset of the fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once On This Inland, Ragtime the Musical, A Man of Importance) have lovingly brought a life to all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and all the Whos of Whoville! These classic, colorful tales are seamlessly brought together by Jojo, a young boy and “thinker of strange and wonderful thinks!” As each story unfolds you will marvel at how relevant and profound Seuss’ subtle themes are, making this musical one that appeals to all ages. The score emerges as Seussian gumbo of musical styles, ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel and R & B to funk. So let your toes tap, your fingers snap, and your imagination run wild. Now one of the most performed shows in America, "Seussical" is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a story that makes you laugh and cry. In collaboration with SSPA’s co-founder Alex Bootzin, Piano instructor Philip Keil, is starting a new and exciting choral program for children ages 8-12yrs, starting this coming January 2010. Keil and Bootzin are looking for ways to get children excited and singing music! Both are interested in adding to the local community by building a supportive group of musically inclined children that share a love of music and voice. SSPA’s new choral program CCC (Coastside Children’s Chorus) will accept any and all students (no auditions or uniforms) that desire choral music in a fun yet challenging environment. No homework or unreasonable demands will be required, just a love and appreciation for music! Keil’s inclusive and non-threatening approach is what will set this program apart from many in the bay area. Keil’s is the perfect combination of energy, intensity, fun, and talent. He’s got the energy of a young teen but the experience and expertise of a seasoned professional! At the age of 13 Philip started work as a professional musician, he played piano studied privately and went on to get a performance diploma from Trinity College in London, UK which is equivalent to a masters in performance. Over the years he has been involved with the All City Orchestra, he studied, taught and played music at the University of Pittsburg and studied at Julliard & SFSU. He worked with Leonard Bernstein at the Henry St. Settlement Music School in NYC and has taught grades 2-8 at the Community Music Center in SF, Matthews Episcopal Day School in San Mateo and has taught recorder, piano and directed school musicals. Philip has developed multiple choir programs, a massive choir at St. Clements Episcopal and St. Matthews in San Mateo. He is a founding member of the famed Ragazzi boy’s choir, he wrote the original theory materials and was the original director of the premier training group. He trained and conducted and was a piano accompanist for the choir both locally and internationally. His main performance instrument is the pipe organ. Keil is no rookie that’s for sure! This well-loved instructor has been teaching private piano and group piano classes to SSPA students over the past two years. With the success of his growing private piano practice, Philip is again pursuing his love for choral direction and embarking on a new adventure at SSPA with Coastside Children’s Chorus! Don’t miss out on an incredible experience with a wonderful instructor starting this coming January 2010! Look for the times and days in the next class schedule due out in December. Since she had such a strong passion for music, she decided to pursue a B.A. in Music (as well as a B.S. in Human Development) at UC Davis. Upon graduation, she decided to go into teaching and received her multiple subject at Sacramento State University. She has taught elementary music in San Lorenzo and Alameda. She returned to school and graduated last year with an M.A. in Intercultural Studies and Christian Educational Leadership. Currently, she works as the music director of Lifehouse Covenant Church (training musicians in piano, guitar, drums, and bass) and teaches private lessons part-time. Annie also plays in a string quartet and does weddings. She just finished two sessions of SSPA’s Broadway Bound camp and is excited to be working with Spindrift in the Fall. What is NEW with SDC AUDITIONS For the Fall Show! ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE!! Tax ID# 40-0000399 On our really really need list: A place to have our Teen Summer Camp and Actor’s studio. We need access to a performing space that has theatre lighting and a stage big enough to hold 35 to 40 teenagers for 2 months 6 hours a day for 2010. If you have ideas, suggestions, a barn, an in with a facility somewhere close to Pacifica we would love a call or email. Our Summer teen program hangs in the balance!! A 4-6 burner stove. The old Wolf in the kitchen has given up the ghost. We would like a largish stove, if someone you know is closing a restaurant or you have access to used professional appliances, or are remodeling...we can find that stove a new home! Storage Space. Gads. We have sets and more sets. We currently have some space but we are always looking for more. It would need to be fairly accessible without having to bug you too much because we are in there fairly often picking up and putting away large pieces at odd hours. A step van, large workman, or small truck (like a U-haul-type truck) for set transport. We schlep a LOT of sets all through the year. If you have something that runs fairly well and can fit a 4’x8’ flat, we need it! We’re thinking you should be able to take the same sort of deduction all those other car donation places give you but you should check with your tax guy first. ONE TIME ONLY!! Would you like a Music Studio named after you? Donate $3,000 to renovate our new studio downstairs at the theatre, and we will NAME THAT ROOM anything you want! With a nice brass plaque and everything!
