The Marsha Bowe Project
The Marsha Bowe
Project
Bandleader, flautist, and primary composer, Marsha Bowe is the prized
student of the legendary Jon Clayton as well as Terrell Stafford, Dick Oats,
and Luis Bonilla of the world-famous Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, notable
New York composer and pianist Bruce Barth, and New York composer
Anita Brown. Her arrangement of "If I Were a Bell" was debuted Dec. 1,
2009 at the Kimmel Center by Temple University's critically acclaimed big
band under the direction of Terrell Stafford. The Marsha Bowe project
brings together Philadelphia's finest young musicians -- musicians who
have shared the stage with jazz legends Mickey Roker, Joe Wilder, Clark
Terry, Branford Marsalis, Slide Hampton, Benny Golson, and the entire
Vanguard Jazz Orchestra -- to bring her compositions to life. Over its
short career, the Marsha Bowe Project has already become a notable
presence in the Philadelphia jazz club scene and has begun to attract
attention in New York City. The musicians of The Project have performed
at such venues as Philadelphia's Chris' Jazz Cafe and Ortlieb's Jazzhaus,
Washington D.C.'s Twins Jazz and H.R. 57, and New York's Dizzy's and
Small's. Making use of variable instrumentations, The Project is able to
alternately feature the insistent drive of the rhythm section, the haunting
beauty of sparsely accompanied winds and voice, or the undeniable
focused power of the full band.

Jazz Students Take on Ortlieb's
The Temple News
"The audience is very encouraging," Malberry said. "They enjoy watching [the
bands] and seeing them grow."
Kicking off Ortlieb's Temple Jazz Night is The Marsha Bowe Project, which
consists of eight Temple Jazz musicians and alumni who have played together
for four years. Its members, Marsha Bowe, Jon Katz, Luke Brandon, Amanda
Noce, Andy Martinek, Dan Hanrahan, Tim Brey and Dahni Scally, make up a
jazz band with an eclectic style.
The band's music is influenced by classic and contemporary jazz, including
funk, ballads and Afro-Cuban music. The Marsha Bowe Project's composer,
Bowe, strives to write music that draws a response and emotion from the
audience, she said.
"When playing jazz music, one of the most important things is to get a reaction
from the audience, whether it's dancing or nostalgia," Bowe said.
While Marsha Bowe is the sole composer for The Marsha Bowe Project, each
band member contributes to their musical pieces through improvisation.
