Over the past decade, we have worked out in community centers, dance studios, karate dojos, basements, and college recreation rooms. All of these areas were cost effective but they have downsides. They tend to have limited access, limited scheduling options, and poor work out surfaces. We would also lose 20 minutes or more of each class laying out mats and then taking up mats. Finally, in summer 2013, we created Mossy Creek Dojo. We bought the old Jefferson City Church of God location. We now have a 60 tatami mat area over a sprung floor. We are proud of our mat surface. We have three yudansha that regularly practice and instruct. Dr. John Kirby started martial arts training in 1990 in Kodokan Judo, Tomiki Ryu Aikido and Shindo Muso Ryu Jodo. He has studied in rough chronological order with John Usher (aikido, jodo), Chris Dewey (judo), Larry Beard (judo), Karl Geis (aikido, jodo, judo), Dr. Gary Berliner (judo), Price Jacobs (judo), Bob Byrd (judo), Bob Rea (judo), Nick Lowry (aikido, jodo, judo), Jack Bieler (aikido, jodo) and Dan Pearson (jodo). Dr. Kirby currently works as a physician in the Jefferson City area of East Tennessee. He currently holds the ranks of: Yondan Judo United States Judo Association, Rokudan Tomiki Ryu Aikido Kaze Uta Budo Kai Dr. Steve Karr started Judo training in 1977 at University of Georgia Judo Club. He studied under Bruce Toups at the Black Belt School of Judo in Atlanta GA where he received his shodan. He is an avid competitor, competing in the US Judo National Championships in 1981. He is currently a faculty member at Carson-Newman since 1987. He currently holds the ranks of (he is under ranked, by the way): Nidan Judo United States Judo Association, Nidan Kenpo Karate, Certified instructor in RAD, Martial Athletics Dr. Kenneth “Buck” Allum started his martial arts training at the age of 9 in Shorin -ryu karate with Lola Thuren and one of her black belts Steve Hammer earning the rank of ikkyu. Unfortunately before earning black belt, he left for college in Atlanta. In Atlanta, he began studying Ki Society Aikido from shodan Frank Walkenberg while at Emory University. He was ranked again as a nikyu in this style. Moving again, this time to Memphis for school, he was introduced to Judo. During the first years of medical school he trained intensely with Clay Morgan at Bartlett Judo Club. During the next years in Knoxville, he trained at Lakeridge Martial arts in Alcoa under Mike and Paul Carter. This was more of a MMA school. An orange belt was awarded in their system of grappling. This school is now TNBJJ and Buck still trains there occasionally on Saturdays. Dr. Allum currently works as a physician in the Jefferson City area of East Tennessee. He currently holds the rank of: Shodan Judo United States Judo Association At this time, we have eliminated any distinction of a beginners and advance class. We may divide classes into two parts depending on who shows up to class. We do have frequent weekend workouts, usually Sundays starting about 2 pm. Weekend classes are less structured and the subject matter usually depends on who attends class. We post on our Facebook Page whether weekend class is happening. We also teach a 1 hour P.E. credit class for Carson Newman University students. Our current class times are as follows: Mossy Creek Dojo 711 E. Highland Street Aikido Monday 6-7:30 pm Jefferson City, TN 37760 Judo Monday 7:30-9 pm mossycreekdojo.com Judo Tuesday 6-7:30 865-548-9103 Judo Thursday 6-7:30 pm jkirby@mossycreekdojo.com Jodo/Aikido Thursday 7:30-9 pm Page 2 LION OF JUDAH JUDO CLUB HAS CLOSED ITS DOORS AT THIS TIME UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE James Hatley started our club with USJA in 2002. He was a former AFJA member from 1963 to 1974. We started competing as a club in 2004. I became the competition coach in 2006 and switched us over to USA Judo in 2010. Sensei Hatley started his Judo career wile stationed in Japan with the USAF as a aviation mechanic. Wile in Japan he received his Shodan from the Kodokan. He returned to the States in 1971 to Victorville CA. He and his assistant coach Gordon L Oakley started the George Air Force Base Judo Club at Victor Valley Collage November 9th 1971. They taught there until Sensei Hatley’s discharge from the Air Force in 1974. Upon his return home Sensei Hatley had a hard time finding any interest in the small town of Camden for Judo until he came into Bradley Walker’s Karate class in 2002. Bradley introduced me to Sensei Hatley because he knew of my interest due to my fathers participation in Judo in the navy. He and I became two peas in a pod for a while until he turned it over to me in 2006. The last competition that he attended was the Frayser open in 2009. Sensei Hatley passed away September 24th 2013 and we sure do miss him. It has been a pleasure having Tony Muller involved in many activities with Tennessee Judo Inc. Tony and his club have been very active in Tennessee Judo since 2010, and he plans to still stay active in Tennessee Judo. He and club members have always been willing to help at tournaments with whatever needed to be done. He is currently working out with Borras BJJ in Lexington TN. You may contact Tony at: Phone 731-363-6516, E-mail lojmaf@yahoo.co, or you can find him on facebook.
