A great vintage picture book for the littlest of children.
The intended audience includes two-year-olds whom the book will be
read to, and beginning readers who are just learning to recognize their
letters. The simple tale details the daily life of Lucy and her friend,
Dominic the cat – what they do, where they go, what they see, whom
Lucy likes and who likes her. The book is notable for its large letters,
number of pictures, and the simplicity of its writing. It even has an
illustrated glossary in the back. This book that first came out in the
1970s, one of the pioneering art-and-education books for very young
children, is timeless.

Do you know, kids, all the different types of jobs there are out there? All
the things people can do? Would you like to know the treats a baker can
make, what tools a fire fighter uses, what a carpenter can build? Let’s
explore the world of work together.
After more than forty years, the foldout book The Happy Garden
is finally being published as a commemoration to the artist Rudolf
Lukeš (1923 – 1976), whose work for children has been sadly
overlooked. His simple and vivid drawings of anthropomorphic
fruit presaged in many ways current trends in children’s book
illustrations. Among current foldout books, The Happy Garden
is a unique and thrilling find. The text was written by a famous
Czech actor, poet and musician Jiří Suchý (1931).

Miloš Macourek (1926 – 2002) held various jobs as a factory
worker, scene shifter, warehouseman, editor, university lecturer in literature and art, story editor for Czechoslovak Films,
screenwriter. He wrote poetry, prose, plays and children‘s books.
Adolf Born (1930), illustrator, is one of the most prominent
contemporary Czech artists, among other prizes was awarded
a Grand Prix prize in Montreal.
A poetic narrative about how the cause of one person’s sorrow can be a source
of joy for someone else. Through words and images, the tale portrays the personification of Tuesday speaking with an old woman, helping her remember her
childhood and the doll that she lost so long ago.
This lyrical epic begins with an old woman sadly remembering a toy she lost as a child.
Tuesday sits with her in the park and tells her what really happened to her doll: the doll
wasn’t lost, but stolen from a basket by a boy. Feeling sorry, he returns the doll, but to the
wrong address, so the doll ends up in the garden of completely different girl. The doll fulfills her deepest wish, which leads her to learn the piano… The book develops through a sequence of short episodes where one starts the next and culminates in a surprising
conclusion, when the story from the past meets the present in front of old woman’s eyes.

Daisy Mrázková (1923) painter and writer, is famous for her
children‘s books she writes and
illustrates as well. For their imagination, timelessness and poeticism, her books are compared to
Exupéry’s Little Prince. Her books
for children also speak to adults
with their wisdom, and their kind
view of the world.
Tales
“Other boys my age climbed trees, shot sparrows with a slingshot and
stole cherries from the neighbours’ garden. I, on the other hand, lived
in my own fantasy world of princes and princesses, magicians and
dwarves.” This is how MILOŠ MACOUREK once described his childhood. All the Elephants in the Orchestra is a selection of his poetry and
prose for children and adults alike. Comedy, combined with a deep,
almost philosophical insight and subtle, yet apt criticism, distinguishes
Miloš Macourek from others.

Cheerful cinematographic adventures of a little girl and
her puppy, who grew up into a giant–sized dog.
When Aja’s parents buy her a little puppy, they have no idea what
is in store for them. The dog grows and grows. He soon outgrows
his shoebox, then his basket, then even a dog-house for three.
He just gulps down buckets of milk and keeps on growing. The
dog has to go, dad decides, but then Figs saves Aja’s life and
clearly has to stay. Šalamoun’s simple line drawings hit just the
right note in this series about a little girl and her huge dog. The

Classmates Featherbutt and Veal have ideas as funny as their
names, and when they decide to escape from school, the adults
can’t keep up.
14
The story takes place in preschool, where our hero, the oddly named Featherbutt, happens to be trapped against his will, keeping him from what he really
wants to do: finish building a model blimp with his dad. His feelings about this
are quite obvious as he lies on his back, kicking and screaming. Luckily, Veal–
another odd kid with an adequately cute name–shares his attitude. Together
they plan to escape, and after a sequence of brief episodes, mostly accidents
and a little mischief–typical for their peculiar and wild nature–they finally succeed. The humorous text is complemented by Galina Miklínová’s illustrations. A must-read for anybody who would ever like to teach at preschool.

Cilka was found as an abandoned baby on the train, yet the girl radiates
happiness and puts everyone in a good mood. Now she’s growing up with
a bunch of other kids in the Sunflower Orphanage, a brick house in the middle
of a great garden. There the kind director doesn’t pressure the kids to do
anything; she never punishes them and she believes that a “sloppy mess
encourages imagination.” Whenever Cilka is happy, an apple grows upon her
head; there are so many of them now that every Wednesday the cook bakes
an apple pie with them. Thanks to Cilka and the director everybody in the
home is happy, at least until the director gets ill and is replaced. He doesn’t
like the free atmosphere of the house, and sets strict new rules. He even
takes the extraordinary Cilka to the doctors and bans Wednesday apple pie.
As the children miss their freedom, Cilka’s apples stop growing and the home
withers away... Luckily the nice old director gets well in the end.

A tender look at a sensitive topic: Disability. The story focuses on the
school year of second-grader Julian, who uses a wheelchair, and his dog
Caesar, who is being trained as a service dog. The boy accepts his handicap, and while the wheelchair helps him overcome his physical disability, it
is also naturally incorporated into the children’s games. Caesar the dog is
treated like a member of the family, and becomes a crucial component of
the boy’s journey to independence. The author treats the sensitive topic
of disability without sentiment and even with a liberating sense of humor.
A great deal of the fun comes from remarks by Caesar, who views everyday life from a dog’s perspective and with a disarming levity. Readers will
also learn fascinating details about the lives and training of service dogs.

Stories
Luke and his friends discover an old brickworks chimney, with a great window in the middle.
Luke uses the window like the lens of a telescope—and he can see all the way to Africa. In
Africa, of course there are giraffes, elephants, and lions, but there is also Luke’s dad. He’s been
gone for ages and Luke can’t wait for him to finish building a bridge there so he can return
home. As the boy watches for his father every day, he befriends a man whose grandfather
used to own the factory. In the spring storks build a nest on the top of the chimney, and Luke
can’t see anything anymore. So in the fall he writes a letter to his dad and sends it with the
storks to Africa. His father gets the letter (delivered not by the storks, but by the man from the
brick factory), and comes back to Luke and his mom. The book was originally published by the
Ministry of Education as an edition for students participating in the I Can Read Already project.

Five-year-old Honzík’s beloved great-grandfather has started forgetting more and more, and he is doing some funny things. But what
Honzík considers funny are actually very real signs of an illness. Alzheimer’s, the disease the whole family learns to live with, somewhat paradoxically brings Honzík and his great-grandfather closer together, since
in a certain way they are in similar positions. The little boy becomes a
great source of support in the every-day situations which are becoming
much more difficult for his great-grandfather. While the difficult topic
may seem shocking for such a young audience, the book approaches it
sensitively and humorously in a way that children will easily understand.
The author shows how important it is to stand together in the good
times and the bad.

Everyone knows that pandas are more popular than ordinary bears.
That’s ok, all our brown bear heroes need is a little white paint and shoe
polish and, voila, the metamorphosis is complete. As rare pandas they
get much better treats. Their other ideas for securing the best food
are just as wild, though not all are so successful. This cute and funny
story revolves around two remarkable bears who, unlike other bears,
are sociable, friendly and live together.
Amélie is 12... and she has been for 122 long years. She has black hair and
wears black clothes; she even rides a black bicycle. Her hands are cold and it
is only at night that Amélie leaves the house where she lives with her mom.
Having no friends and being different makes her sadder with each of her
122 years… until an unexpected encounter with Markéta cheers her up. All
of a sudden she has a friend to laugh and play with, someone to talk to. The
girls keep their friendship a secret until Amélie saves Markéta’s life… The
book was a tremendous success with readers and critics alike, it was nominated for IBBY’s prestigious Golden Ribbon and gained Czech sci-fi academy
Award for illustration. Albatros immediately agreed with the author to publish another story about the mysterious Amelie: Amelie and the Color World. academy

A graphic novel of sorts, composed of nine stories without words, presents
unusual protagonists: old men. In this homage to the old age and to all grandfathers of the world, the author demonstrates his highly poetic imagination;
his drawings are elegant and slightly melancholic; his stories are reminiscent
of glorious old days of knighthood and true adventures. While creating worlds
beyond the realm of the everyday experience, the author always spices them

brilliant, colorful illustrations and collages and Zdeněk Mahler’s playful accompanying narrative. The book takes readers on a charming journey of
discovery through the magnificent metropolis’s architectural landmarks, cultural hot spots, and ethnically diverse neighborhoods. New York was created

to US. The book was finally brought to life when Mahler’s grandson discovered surviving printing proofs. Fifty years later, it remains as fresh as ever.

arrested in 1953 and spent several months in prison.
In the next long years of milder Stalinism he became
a leader of a group of poets. In 1960 he started writing
experimental poetry from which he shifted to experimentation in visual art. The failure of Prague Spring
1968 brought is work in index again. He signed Charta
77 and used his scholarship to West Berlin to emigrate.
From 1980 he lived in Paris.

This book details the development of tanks over the last ninety years,
not only from the point of view of construction, but also in broader contexts. The capabilities of individual types of tanks have fundamentally
influenced the results of almost every campaign and armed conflict in
the last century and the new millennium, shaping the course of history.
The book also informs readers about the development of anti-tank weaponry, from Wolfram rounds and anti-tank rifles at the very beginning to
today’s depleted uranium shells and tandem warhead guided missiles.

The mere existence of nuclear weapons has significantly altered the
world we live in. Without these inventions, modern civilization would
look drastically different. For decades the threat of worldwide nuclear
conflict worked to maintain a fragile balance between the East and
West, Dictatorship and Democracy. This book explores the history and
development of these weapons, examines the sites of nuclear explosions, and explains the scientific principles behind atomic and hydrogen
bombs. Photos show mushroom clouds, and the aftermath of nuclear
blasts is discussed—explaining the strength of radiation and the reach
of radioactive fallout. The book also highlights non-proliferation and
other political efforts to keep the weapons from ever being used again.

The books become a good helper for learning and practicing
foreign words. On the fun images that illustrate the current life
situations, you will find the names of things that are encountered
daily. Focusing on travel, entertainment, household items, school,
sports, etc. each thematic unit is completed by simple phrases
from life. At the end there is a comprehensive bilingual dictionary
with all the words from the book. The manual is designed for
children, but not limited to them.

#1 publisher in the Czech Republic with 64 years of history
1,000+ new titles each year – fiction and non-fiction
Publishing international blockbusters, e. g. J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter
and The Casual Vacancy or Fifty Shades of Grey
Publishing, distribution, readers’ club, e-shop
10 imprints covering every target group from children to seniors
Increasing share of Czech and Slovak markets
Our publishing portfolio arises mainly from our five fiction imprints – Albatros, the flagship, a traditional publisher of children’s literature (established in
1949 and known as SNDK, National Children’s Publishing until 1969; over 11,000 titles have been published in more than 360 million copies; one of the
seven co–founders of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in 1964); CooBoo, a modern publisher of young adult titles; Plus, publishing refined literature
for adult readers; Motto, producing a diverse range of titles for adult readers; and XYZ, one of the most prominent and successful publishing houses in
the Czech Republic with an exceptionally broad range of products, acquired in late 2011.
Albatros Media also includes four non–fiction brands. Apart from the original Computer Press brand that continues to publish on computer literature,
digital photography, and other modern technologies, there are three other imprints – BizBooks for titles on management, economy, finance, and personal
and career development; Edika for titles following modern educational trends; and CPress, broadening our portfolio with books on travel, health &
family, crafts & hobbies, history & arts, motors, DIY, cooking etc. Albatros Media corp. is also the exclusive producer and distributor of books published
within the Edice České televize(Czech Television, the public service broadcaster in the Czech Republic) project.
The Company also operates Albatros Media Slovakia, its daughter company, distributing both Czech and Slovak titles of its imprints within the Slovak
market. In 2012 we published more than 100 new titles from both our fiction and non–fiction portfolio in Slovak, the beginning of our effort to become
one of the top three Slovak publishers by 2015. In 2013 Albatros Media corp. became the majority shareholder of the company eReading.cz ltd. The
eReading.cz project aims to offer Czech readers legal and affordable e-books. eReading.cz is one of the best established providers of electronic books
in the Czech Republic, and belongs to the technological vanguard. eReading.cz e–readers are remarkable for their simplicity of use and that they
download material automatically, without needing any conversion.
Besides publishing, we operate a logistics and distribution network in the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic, under the separate labels DISTRI.CZ
and DISTRI.SK, which, through an extensive network of sales representatives, directly supply more than one thousand bookstores and libraries from
our warehouses and expedition centres in Prague and Bratislava. Additionally, the long-established Albatros Media Mail Order Club, active for 49 years
in almost every one of the Czech Republic’s 3,000+ elementary schools, is managed by our company, as is www.knihy.cpress.cz, the first Czech online
book store. Albatros Media is also among the most important book distributors in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. In cooperation with international
partners, we produce annually over 50 titles in other languages.
