Bi-lingual parish celebrates the Word of God
FORT LEE—Over the past 10 years, Father
Stephen A. Carey, pastor of Madonna Parish has
witnessed the growth of the Korean community in his church. “If you just walk through Fort
Lee, you will see the Korean influence around
you,” he explained.
When he was appointed pastor in 2005, he
saw a need to reach out to the Korean faithful.
“Since I came to the parish, we have registered
over 600 Korean families.”
Fr. Carey helped establish a ministry to better serve his community. He felt it was important to “be present” for his Korean parishioners.
He even visited South Korea in 2007.
In October of last year, Parochial Vicar Paul
Lee approached Fr. Carey about a spiritual exercise in which Korean parishioners transcribed
books of the Bible by hand.
“I thought it was a great catechetical and
evangelical practice,” Fr. Carey said. “For
Catholics, it was a great way to internalize
the Word of God.”
The project flourished and each participant
transcribed an individual book of the Bible,
working for almost eight months. On May 31, a
special Mass was held at the Cathedral Basilica
of the Sacred Heart in Newark with 1,200 parishioners from Madonna Parish in attendance.
Entitled, “Celebrating the Word of God,”
the Mass was celebrated in English with some
readings in Korean, and included several songs
performed by the Korean adult and children’s
choirs.
A total of 61 books were transcribed and
dedicated at the Mass by Archbishop Bernard
A. Hebda. Following the Prayer of the Faithful,
Archbishop Hebda blessed the transcriptions,
which will be housed at Madonna Parish and
available for use by the parishioners.
Before the final blessing Fr. Carey crowned
the patronal statue of the Blessed Mother in
traditional Korean dress.

Archbishop Hebda appointed Apostolic Administrator
of Saint Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese
A
t the request of the Holy See, Archbishop Bernard A. Hebda has agreed to take on temporary
oversight of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and
Minneapolis pending the appointment of a new
archbishop there.
The announcement came from the Vatican June 15 that
Archbishop Hebda, who has been serving as coadjutor in the
Archdiocese of Newark since September 2013, accepted the
additional assignment as Apostolic Administrator of the Midwest archdiocese following the resignation of Archbishop John
Nienstedt, 68.
In a letter to the Saint Paul-Minneapolis clergy, religious
and faithful Archbishop Hebda said he was humbled by Pope
Francis’ decision to appoint him to help shepherd the archdiocese of 2.6 million Catholics with Auxiliary Bishop Andrew
Cozzens and other archdiocesan leadership.
“I pray that I will be able to be of some service to you, the
priests and faithful of the archdiocese, as you prepare for the
appointment of a new archbishop,” Archbishop Hebda said. The
Pittsburgh native added that he had fond memories of his four
years as bishop in the neighboring Diocese of Gaylord, “where I
first came to know the vibrancy of the faith shared by Catholics
of the upper Midwest.”
Newark Archbishop John J. Myers, 73, whom Archbishop
Hebda, 55, is to ultimately succeed, said both were informed
of the Holy Father’s decision on Saturday by Archbishop Carlo
Maria Vigano, U.S. apostolic nuncio.
Extending his best wishes to Archbishop Hebda, Archbish-
op Myers reminded the faithful of Newark that details of the dual
position required time to work out.
“I am sure you all will understand that we are still in the early
stages of this moment, and Archbishop Hebda will need to take time
to become familiar with the needs of the people of Saint Paul-Minneapolis,” Archbishop Myers. “Together, he and
I will ensure that we fulfill the Holy Father’s
wishes to address the many needs of the people of both great archdioceses.”
The moves come after Pope
Francis accepted the resignations of
Archbishop Nienstedt and Auxiliary Bishop Lee Anthony Piche, 57.
They resigned under the Code of
Canon Law provision that permits
bishops to resign because of illness or
another grave reason. Customarily, bishops serve until the Vatican accepts their
mandatory offer to retire at age 75.
In a statement, Archbishop Nienstedt said he was resigning “to give the
archdiocese a new beginning amidst the
many challenges we face.” He added that he
leaves “with a clear conscience knowing
that my team and I have put in place
solid protocols to ensure the protection of minors and vulnerable adults.”

“T

make it better;
let’s make it
ours,” said valedictorian Isabella Duarte, a Cancun, Mexico native who graduated
summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in physics and a minor
in applied scientific mathematics
from the College of Arts and Sciences. She addressed approximately 1,150 undergraduates, at Seton
Hall University’s 158th Baccalaureate commencement on May 18 at
the Prudential Center, Newark.
“Seton Hall has implanted the

Be the politicians that are concerned for their country and not

University President A. Gabriel

value the people around you more
than the things that surround you.
Stay close to Seton Hall always and
those who will follow you. I ask
that you give up yourselves to this
community that has nurtured and

Caldwell University
celebrates graduates
Caldwell University celebrated
its 73rd annual commencement May
17 in the George R. Newman Center
on campus. For the first time in the
university’s history, Caldwell held
two ceremonies, one for graduate
students and another for undergraduates due to the institution’s growth.
Laura Schreiber delivered the
student address at the graduate commencement ceremony. Schreiber,
who received her master’s degree
in counseling with mental health/art
therapy concentration, referenced
an article in Time magazine a 2013
article in which writer Joel Stein described millennials as lazy, entitled
and narcissistic.
“Thankfully, I know that this
assessment of our generation is
not true in its entirety,” she said.
She dared her fellow graduates to
“boldly and practically” prove Stein
wrong.
Commencement was held in the George R. Newman Center on
campus.

student graduate address.
Kathleen Flynn delivered the
student address at the undergraduate commencement.
Flynn, who received a bachelor’s degree in communication arts
and political science, compared the
students’ journey to the growth of
a flower.
“Four years ago, when we
chose Caldwell University, we
planted a proverbial seed on this
campus…Today is the celebration
of our blossoming.”
An honorary degree was presented to philanthropist Michael
Kambourakis who was instrumental in to the founding of two
nonprofits, the SEARCH Day
program that assists those on the
autism spectrum, and the Dominican Republic Relief Organization
that aids thousands of displaced
Haitians who moved to the neighboring island nation after the 2010
earthquake.
Caldwell University awarded
approximately 380 undergraduate,
graduate and doctoral degrees. “It is
a day of great joy and pride for the
faculty, staff and administration of
Caldwell as we send forth our 73rd
class of graduates to make a positive impact upon the world,” President Nancy H. Blattner said.

Saint Peter’s celebrates 124th Commencement
On May 18, thousands filled
the amphitheater at the PNC Bank
Arts Center in Holmdel for the
124th commencement of Saint
Peter’s University.
The Jersey City institution
awarded 21 doctoral degrees, 255
master’s degrees, 477 bachelor’s degrees, and 16 associate’s
degrees. The Class of 2015 also
included the first students to graduate from the master’s programs in
public administration and strategic
communication.
Prajjwol Gautam and Prajwal
Niraula were co-valedictorians
for the Class of 2015. Each spoke
of the gratitude they felt for their
professors and friends as well as
members of their families. “In the
past four years, Saint Peter’s has
been my home and I am grateful
to this community for that,” Gautam said.
While the graduates celebrated their accomplishments they

the graduates. “Your significant
contributions give evidence that our
mission is alive in each one of you.
We believe in you and we trust that
you will go forth and make a difference in the world ... make life better
for others.”
Secretary Hendricks spoke
of three “hopes” she has for the
graduates as they continue on their
journey. The first is to take a leap
of faith and trust others as well as
themselves. “To overcome adversity and confront new challenges
is to be motivated by passion and
compassion,” she counseled. The
second is to be open to change.
“Make a commitment to excellence,
without comparisons or contrast;
set your own personal standard of
excellence.” The third piece of advice is “Self-respect and acceptance
will free you to respect and accept
others; it will open your heart and
mind to be joyous in life,” she said.
class, have the opportunity to
study, to conquer the great questions of our time,” he said. “You
have the opportunity to shape the
hopes, the dreams, the aspirations
of your mothers and fathers, your
family members and your heritage, and make this real,” he said.
Brooks received an honorary
Doctorate of Humane Letters. The
university also bestowed an honorary degree upon Daniel A. Altilio,
president and CPO of United Way
of Hudson County.
A longtime lawyer and human
rights activist, Brooks previously
served as president and CEO of
the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, based in Newark. He
also campaigned as an advocate
for public education, affordable
healthcare and fiscal responsibility. He graduated from Jackson
State University with a degree in
political science and a Master of
Divinity from Boston University
School of Theology. Brooks went
on to earn a Juris Doctorate from
Yale Law School.
Altilio has worked to improve
the lives of the most vulnerable residents in Jersey City and
the surrounding communities for
nearly 19 years with the United
Way of Hudson County, a community-based non-profit organization that serves the basic needs
of economically insufficient individuals.

graduates to “be better. That’s what
education is designed to allow you
to be, and what it should inspire
you to be.” He urged the graduates
to “care about what you are doing,
care about the people you are with,
care about the world we all live in.
That makes you better; that makes
us all better.”

mission of our college … and act
with competence, character and
compassion.”
Among the graduates were six
who received their Doctor of Nurse

Bishop O’Hara’s message was
echoed by Don Bosco’s principal,
John Stanczak, who spoke of the
special bond of brotherhood that
unites students during their tenure
on campus. “As Ironmen, you are
forged from a different mold,”
Stanczak said. “Your success will

dreams. Living your lives well is
about accomplishing the day-today tasks, and taking joy in being

Don Bosco Prep is celebrating
its centennial in 2015 as well as the
bicentennial of the birth of Saint
John “Don” Bosco, who established
the Society of Saint Francis de Sales
(Salesians). The school is in the midst
of a $10 million centennial campaign

The school’s year-long centennial celebration will continue
in September with a Mass for the

Clark campus. Diplomas
were presented by members
of the administrative team including Sister
Jacquelyn Balasia, S.C., Joan Barron and Maureen Connell.
The class of 2015 achieved in excess of
$18 million in academic scholarships and
awards. Connell delivered the invocation and
Sr. Jacquelyn announced the academic scholarship awards. Fr. Kevin Murphy, a member of
the social studies department at Mother Seton
gave the closing benediction.
“Graduates, embrace the education that
you received here at Mother Seton. Use your
leadership wisely,” Barron stated. “Take with
you your pursuit of academic excellence and
of course, your Seton spirit. You made history
here as students, friends, team mates and club
members. Continue to serve others. By serving others, you are ultimately serving God.”
The Administrator’s Award for academic excellence during the past four years was
awarded to Valedictorian Imrin Goraya and
Salutatorian Emily Wieszczek. The Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Award for exemplary witness
to Christian values during the past four years
was presented to Sarah Dedinsky. “What I will
truly take away from my years at Mother Seton, aside from my extracurricular and service
activities, is the excellent education and various opportunities to excel that I have received
throughout the course of my high school career,” Goraya said to fellow graduates. “You
are all hard-working individuals who are
capable of achieving success, and I would like
to remind you to never let anything get in the
way of achieving your goals.”
Goraya will attend Widener University
as a biology pre-med major, beginning her
first year in an eight-year medical program
affiliated with Temple University School of
Medicine.
Salutatorian Wieszczek echoed Goraya’s
sentiments. “I would be remiss if I did not
give credit and express my gratitude to the
wonderful administration, teachers and staff
who, for four years have contributed to each of
our journeys by continually going beyond requirements and expectations,” she said. “Saint
Catherine of Siena got it right when she said,
‘be who you are meant to be and you will set
the world on fire.’ We are each stewards of our
own small flames, and throughout our lives we
will meet countless others who will feed the
flames of our knowledge and wisdom.”
Wieszczek intends to study nursing at
Franciscan University of Steubenville, OH.

Roselle Catholic faculty
contribute $65,000 for
student aid
ROSELLE—In an act of generosity, the faculty and
staff of Roselle Catholic High School voluntarily and
anonymously elected to give back a portion of their
salary to the school. The donations help provide tuition
assistance for dozens of students to attend the school.
The Roselle Catholic administration and board does
its best to control expenses, but every year sees a tuition increase. The cost to attend Roselle Catholic is to
increase by $400 next year, breaking $11,000.
A growing number of students are in need of financial aid. Almost 60 percent of the student body
receives tuition assistance—starting at $350 to considerably more —made possible by the donations of
benefactors. Among the most generous is the school’s
faculty and staff.
This year, at the suggestion of a few teachers,
Roselle Catholic launched the Faculty/Staff Initiative,
to generate funds for tuition assistance.
A substantial majority of teachers and staff agreed
to regular payroll deductions to support students in
need. Beginning in September and running through
the end of school year, the initiative will yield over
$65,000 in aid. For more information about donations, visit rosellecatholic.org.
