Hello everybody.
On behalf of the committee I would like to wish everyone a (trifle belated) very, very
happy and prosperous year in 2013. According to the Mayan calendar we have
survived the end of the world so I would say that the only way left is up!
Club news
It is great to see so many of our members down to play social tennis on a Saturday afternoon and we are also
delighted to have some new members there as well. There are still a large number of members we have not
seen for a while and it would be really nice to welcome them back.
Unfortunately we seem to have lost our club cleaner as he went missing around the middle of December and
has not been seen since. Lambta was a Malawian citizen and it is possible that he went out without his papers
and was deported. We do miss his friendly face and hope that all is well with him wherever he is.
Entertainment
The club will be celebrating Valentine’s Day early this year with a Team Tennis event. This
will be a Turnaround Tournament, with men dressing as ladies and vice versa. There will be
a prize for the best-dressed player. Bonus points will be awarded to players who dress in red
and white.
The cost to play will be R10 per player, which will also entitle the player to a ticket in the draw for a Valentine’s
Day hamper. Extra tickets may be purchased at a cost of R10 per ticket. The hamper contains not only sweets,
biscuits, bubbly and a soft toy, but also has a gift package of products
kindly donated by Barbara, who is the owner of Senta Bella Hair Salon
for ladies and gents. Senta Bella Salon is situated in the Bracken Gardens
Shopping Centre on the corner of Hennie Alberts and Delphinium Streets.
(Often thought of as the Dischem Centre.)
There will be a braai after the tournament.
Family news
Zanmarie Pienaar did herself, her country and our tennis club proud when she
achieved 3 Gold Medals at the Zone Six Youth Games that were held in Zambia from
the 4th – 19th December. The Zone VI games are a triennial sporting festival that
brings together sporting men and women from across the Southern Africa region.
The games would be competed for in eight sporting disciplines including athletics,
basketball, boxing, football (for both boys and girls), judo, netball, tennis and
swimming.
Linda Dickson is safely home after a trip to Dubai to meet her newest grandson, Alex Ross Dickson, who was
born on the 11th September 2012. Lin had been itching to go but unfortunately the trip was soon over and now
she is home again. I am sure that it was very difficult for Lin to leave young Alex (as well as her son and
daughter-in-law, of course.)
Carol and Graham Field are also home after touring New Zealand
with their daughter Melanie, who
now lives in Australia, in December.
They had a really great trip and
although they were not lucky enough
to get to the Australian Open, they
did enjoy a wonderful day watching
tennis at the Brisbane International.
Kerry Stuart, husband Barry and their two daughters were also globe-trotting in
December. They had a wonderful three weeks in Europe. Daughter Chloe loved
the snow and Kerry loved the Christmas sales. Little Casey, who is only now just
three months old, has already got her own passport and has travelled to Germany,
Spain, Portugal and Austria.
Morning Tennis
Yvonne Cosgrove is greeting 2013 with delight as she has had a good start to her
year. Husband Neville, who was desperately ill for an extended period last year, is
on the mend at last and is currently in rehab. We are so happy for the family.
Yvonne was also fortunate enough to go to Australia for the Aussie Open. Truly a great way to start the new
year.
Golden Oldies
We wish Neville Jones well with his forthcoming knee replacement. We’re sure he
needs to get it done quite soon - well before his planned cruise of the western
Mediterranean in June.
Kid’s corner
We are very proud of our juniors and their achievements. Congratulations to all those who
did well in their year-end exams and special congratulations to Ruan Mentz who was chosen
as Headboy of Marais Viljoen High School and to Kymberlie van der Bank who was elected as
a prefect. Kimberley Klette has also been selected as a prefect at Kenton Primary.
Congratulations also to Sheldon Snead who has been selected for the Gauteng East squad.
We would also like to congratulate Jessica Wade on winning the top award for foundation phase (grades 1 to 3)
which is the F.I.R.E. Award which stands for Faith, Integrity, Respect and Excellence.
Our committee, through the endeavours of Lisa Wade and David Klette, are trying extremely hard to get regular
Junior Tournaments on the first Sunday of each month up and running. The response has been a little
disappointing up to now with only ten players
entering the February tournament. Even if
there were only a few players,
ayers, they enjoyed an
afternoon of tennis. Well done to Jessica Wade
and Kimberley Klette for winning the first event
of 2013. We would really like to encourage all
our juniors and their friends (even if they are
not members) to come along and join in.
New Members
We are very happy to welcome to the club new
