The League is made up of the top teams in minor league football and is continually making efforts to improve the quality of play for both its member teams and fans. The WFL was first formed in the mid1970s as a professional league and enjoyed a brief history as it featured such National Football League greats as Larry Csonka of the Miami Dolphins and Ken Stabler of the Oakland Raiders. By early June 1974, the WFL claimed they had some 60 NFL stars and regulars under contract. Although this pro grid circuit’s proclaimed ambition was to bring American football onto a worldwide stage, due to its own undercapitalization as well as competition with the juggernaut NFL, the league folded only after two seasons. Nonetheless, the WFL was resurrected in 2007 by some of the top owners in minor league football including Jewell Portwood of the Dallas Diesel, D.J. Jones of the Austin Gamebreakers, and James Ashford of the Oklahoma Thunder. The goal for the league now is to develop talented athletes both on and off the field and to give young men a place to showcase their skills and further their football careers. The 2010 version of the WFL consists of 14 teams in four different divisions including two-time World Bowl champions the Oklahoma Thunder who went 13-0 last year and were ranked #2 in the country. World Bowl IV will be played on Saturday, August 7 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. THE WORLD FOOTBALL LEAGUE 5 About the Midwest Rampage The Midwest Rampage is a new—yet experienced—Minor League football team based out of Webster City, Iowa, that is a member of the Heartland Division in the World Football League. As members of another team, most of the Rampage veteran players played in either the 2009 WFL or North American Football League (NAFL) playoffs. Such that, when the Rampage take the field this season, they will do so with a squad of seasoned players who are joined by a group of fresh faces eager to make their inaugural season memorable. The Rampage came about because a core group of its veteran players from Webster City decided that their own town would be the perfect place for a Minor League football squad. Simply put, because of its central location, a market of supportive sponsors, the availability of talented players, and a community with great pride and tradition in the sport of football, Webster City is the ideal setting for a team such as the Midwest Rampage. While the Rampage may call Webster City home, their 2010 roster consists of 45 players representing 21 different Iowa towns or cities from as far as Sheldon and Iowa City. The team also is made up of many players who have earned either NAFL or WFL AllStar status and include Andy Sowle, Brian Miller, Joe Gilbert, Chris McNiel, Cory Stuhr, Clint Foth, John Elkin, Jared Bell, Jay Smith, and Jake Thoma. Furthermore, all of these players—including two-time honorees Sowle, McNiel, Bell, Miller, Elkin, and Thoma—have also been named to several All-American squads such as Minor League Football News and the Coaches Poll. Lastly, Elkin was voted by league coaches in 2009 as the WFL “Co-Defensive Player of the Year” and also was a finalist for the national “Linebacker” and “Defensive Player of the Year” awards presented by Minor League Football News & Hall of Fame at the Annual Minor League Football Awards in Las Vegas on December 4, 2009. So what does this all mean? First, the Rampage—with all their experienced players as well as their new talented ones—will be able to field a competitive team worthy of any opponent. Second—and this isn’t an understatement—the Rampage are going to have an attitude... one that epitomizes both class and toughness. Overall, the main goal of the Midwest Rampage is to strive for excellence in all aspects while providing fans, supporters, and sponsors with hard-hitting, competitive, and family-oriented football in Webster City. 45 Rampage players representing 21 different Iowa towns or cities: Ames Belmond Blairsburg Clarion Des Moines Duncombe Eagle Grove Ellsworth Fort Dodge Goldfield Humboldt Iowa City Kamrar Manson Mason City Pella Roland Sheldon Stanhope Webster City Williams Kroona Law Office 916 Superior Street Suite 102 Webster City, IA 50595 Justin Kroona ESQ (515) 835-9953 6 ABOUT THE MIDWEST RAMPAGE Rampage Numbers, Facts, and Data 64 players from 31 different towns that tried 27.4 years old is the average age of a Mid- 8 current players who were selected by league out for the 2010 Midwest Rampage. west Rampage player. 50% of roster played collegiately at some level and include Iowa State University, Drake University, Morningside College, Doane College, Northwestern College (IA), Wartburg College, Central College, Iowa Central Community College, and Ellsworth Community College. 26 years in difference of age between the 45 players on the roster of the Midwest Rampage representing 21 different Iowa towns and cities as far as Sheldon and Iowa City. coaches to play in the 2009 World Football League All-Star game. 3 different former high school state championship teams (and classes) who have players on 23 players from Webster City and surround- the Midwest Rampage Bettendorf (4A), Huming areas including Eagle Grove, Williams, boldt (3A), and Northeast Hamilton (8-man). Chris attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he played offensive guard for the Duhawks from 1996-98 after transferring from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. After graduating from Loras with a degree in Sports Management, Coach Hansen then served as a graduate assistant for his alma mater where he coached the defensive line in 1999 and the offensive line in 2000. Coach Hansen then went to St. Cloud State (Minnesota) to not only complete his masters degree, but to also serve as an offensive linemen coach from 2000-01. Chris was then named as the offensive line coach at Dana College (Nebraska) and coached there from 2002-03 before moving to Austin College (Texas) where he served as both the offensive coordinator and offensive linemen coach from 2003-05. The Rampage is very fortunate to have Coach Hansen heading its program and he’s very thrilled to be coaching again. “It’s nice to get the juices flowing again,” he said, “the Board has obviously done a great job of putting together the organization... now it’s just my responsibility to get the job done on the field.” A resident of Webster City, Chris is employed with Merck Co. as a Customer Representative. He and his wife, Emily, have three children: Ella (4), Mia (2), and Dane (6 months). Billy is a native of Webster City and former Lynx player whose play as a wide receiver is still part of Purple & Gold lore. As a junior in 1982, Smith helped his team become the very first Webster City squad to ever qualify for the Class 3A playoffs after going 9-0 during the regular season. Although Webster City lost to Harlan in the 1st Round, Bill earned 1st Team AllConference honors after hauling in 22 receptions for 442 yards and 9 touchdowns. The next season, he helped the 1983 squad set a new record for most wins in a season when the Lynx stormed to a 10-0 record before again losing to Harlan, this time in the Semifinals. Coach Smith earned 1st Team All-State honors after leading the entire state (Class A-4A) in receiving with 48 receptions for 1,047 yards and 13 touchdowns. Twentyseven years after his last season, Billy still owns the Lynx record for most receiving yards in a season (955) and career (1,397). After graduating from WCHS in 1984, Billy played football at Iowa Central Community College for one season. He is very excited about being involved with the Rampage and will be working with the receiving corps and special teams. Coach Smith has also been coaching the 5th and 6th grade programs in Webster City while professionally has been in sales the past 17 years. Billy and his wife, Lisa, have four children: Cody (20), Courtni (18), Sierra (13), and Jacob (11). Tim Anderson, a 1984 graduate of Webster City High School, is living proof of Lynx Football history. First, of the 110+ Webster City players who have earned All-State honors, Tim is only 1 of 15 Lynx players to do so twice: an outstanding noseguard on defense, as a junior he landed on the 2nd Team squad in 1982 before earning 1st Team honors his senior year in 1983. Second, Tim helped guide the 1982 Lynx to its first 9-0 record since 1970 and a berth into the Class 3A playoffs—the Lynx’s firstever playoff appearance in school history. The next season in 1983, Anderson again led Webster City to 9-0 regular season record en route to the school’s fifth consecutive North Central Conference championship and another playoff qualification. The 1982 squad’s defeat of St. Edmond in the 1st Round not only garnered the first playoff win in school history, but also set new record for most wins in a season that—to date—has only been matched by the 1985 and ’86 squads. Tim played in the 1984 Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star game before suiting up for legendary Iowa coach Hayden Fry from 1984-88 in which he was a four-year letterman (1985-88) and was also part of five bowl teams: the ’84 Freedom Bowl, ‘85 Rose Bowl, ‘86 Holiday Bowl, ‘87 Holiday Bowl, and ‘88 Peach Bowl. Anderson, who works at Town & Country Insurance, also coaches football at Webster City High School where. Tim has three daughters with his wife, Kathy: Bailey (17), Erin (15), and Madalyn (13). 911 2nd Avenue Clarion,IA (515) 532-2075 www.andersonauctionco.com 10 COACHING STAFF 2010 Game Day Staff ATHLETIC TRAINER GENERAL MANAGER Dr. James Kumm, D.C., CCSP Darin Eklund, PA-C Dr. James Kumm, the Midwest Rampage’s athletic trainer, is a 1986 graduate of Harlan High School and a huge fan of football be it at the high school, college, professional, or Minor League level. This was accomplished after Webster City Community Schools agreed to allow the Rampage to play their home games on the football field located inside of Bob Buckley Track. This facility is perfect for the Rampage as it has its own press box with speaker system, stadium seating for 400 people, and is just a short distance from both the rest rooms and concessions. However, the only shortcoming of this venue was that the only available scoreboard was just a timer used for track meets. The Midwest Rampage—in collaboration the Webster City Youth Football program—purchased a new, permanent, multi-purpose scoreboard to be used at their home football games in the newly dubbed “Stampede Stadium.” As well, the scoreboard will be used for Pop Warner games sponsored by the Youth Sports Foundation and will also be used by both the high and middle school for track meets. The scoreboard, a Daktronics SO2198 LED Outdoors Scoreboard, measures 5 feet high tall by 10 feet wide and is capable of keeping both time and score for soccer, football, and track. The scoreboard cost a total of $4,500 of which the Rampage paid $3,500 while the remaining $1,000 was paid by the Youth Sports Foundation. The new scoreboard will not only benefit the Rampage and the Webster City Youth Football program, but will also serve the high school track programs as well as any other sport played at the Bob Buckley Track.
