OFFICIAL PROGRAMME DISCOVER GYMNASTICS www.DiscoverGymnastics.uk You are awesome. You can balance your weight on just one hand. You can fly through the air, spinning and twisting and still land on your feet. Are you ready to discover just how awesome you are and what kind of gymnast you’ll be? DOUBLE-MINI TRAMPOLINE GYMNAST MATTHEW SWAFFER WELCOME 2014 TRAMPOLINE, TUMBLING & DMT BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS WELCOME TO ECHO ARENA HOME OF THE 2014 TRAMPOLINE TUMBLING & DMT BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS WELCOME MESSAGE O n behalf of British Gymnastics I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all our guests and especially to those gymnasts who have successfully made it through to this year’s British Championships following intense competition. For the gymnasts in the disciplines of these championships, which include trampoline, disability trampoline, tumbling and DMT (double-mini trampoline), this weekend sees the culmination of their work over the last year; a period during which they have battled through tough high-standard qualification events to claim their right to compete at this level. Throughout the championships you will see a feast of high quality non-stop gymnastics across the disciplines with plenty to amaze and entertain everyone. None of it would be possible without the dedication and hard work of the organisers and those working behind the scenes to create the success that these championships will no doubt become. We would like to take this opportunity to thank UK Sport for supporting our World Class Programme and Sport England for aiding our grassroots development. We would also like to thank our sponsor Milano and our preferred suppliers Gymaid, Continental, IHG and Alto Digital. In a few weeks’ time, our leading gymnasts will be aiming to repeat their success when they represent Great Britain and take on the rest of the world at the World Championships in Daytona Beach, USA and I’m sure you will all join me in wishing them the best. BRYONY PAGE To all of our gymnasts, coaches and clubs, congratulations on making it to the prestigious British Championships, good luck and above all enjoy the competition. TRAMPOLINE, TUMBLING & DMT WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? TRAMPOLINE TUMBLING & DMT WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? T 2014 TRAMPOLINE, TUMBLING & DMT BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS DOUBLE-MINI TRAMP (DMT) This is a spectacular sport that can require a top trampoline gymnast to reach heights of 10 metres whilst performing multiple somersaults and twists. This discipline is extremely spectacular and requires dynamic reactions, spatial awareness, co-ordination, power, strength and courage. The action takes no more than a few seconds but requires years of hard work. This competition combines the horizontal run of tumbling with the vertical rebound of trampoline. After a short run, the gymnast jumps onto a bed less than a quarter the size of a trampoline to perform a skill, single, double and triple somersaults, immediately followed by a dismount element onto a landing mat. The first part of the doublemini trampoline is called the mount, which is at an angle and gymnasts perform skills from this onto the second. This part is called the spotter. Skills can be performed back onto the mini trampoline or as a dismount onto the landing mat. As well as looking for good execution of the skills and high difficulty, trampoline judges also take into account the amount of time the gymnast spends in the air – known as time of flight which is added to the final score. Tumbling is a truly breath-taking type of gymnastics. It’s all about somersaults, flips and twists - and linking them together, one right after the other. Top tumblers are extremely powerful and must have speed down the runway but control on the landing. 8 TUMBLING An individual trampoline routine is made up from ten skills and must start and finish on the feet with competition made up of a voluntary and set routines. The set routine includes a sequence of specific skills that all gymnasts must complete while the voluntary or “vol” routine lets the gymnast create their own routine with the skills they want to perform. rampoline is one of the most exhilarating sports there is. The sky really is the limit. Gymnasts perform spectacular aerial tricks and skills and build up to some incredible big-air stunts. Trampoline gymnasts experience between 4-7 G-force during routines (similar to that of a Formula 1 driver), therefore athletes must be strong enough to control four times their body weight! Double-mini trampoline packs a lot of action into a short space of time. Combining explosive power with high-flying stunts, gymnasts have incredible strength and co-ordination and can perform amazing flips and tricks. TRAMPOLINE Tumbling is an explosive sport performed on a 25-metrelong spring runway (tumble track) that help the gymnasts rebound as high as fifteen feet in the air as they demonstrate speed, strength and agility while executing a series of somersaults and twists. Tumblers travel along the tumble track performing eight consecutive skills. The judges are looking for no interruption or change of rhythm and only the feet or hands touching the tumble track. Judges are looking for good execution of skills and high difficulty with controlled landings within the designated zone. Synchronised trampoline demands the same skill as individual trampoline, while adding the element of precision timing. Using two trampolines, two gymnasts perform identical ten-skill routines at the same time. For those in categories with less than eight competitors, all gymnasts will advance to the finals but for those with more than this amount, only the top eight will qualify for Sunday’s finals. Today is not only important for the gymnasts who will be looking to fight for British titles but it is also a trial for the 2014 World Championships taking place in November. SUNDAY On Sunday the finalists take to the arena to fight for the coveted British titles in all three disciplines. We also see our disability trampoline gymnasts in action. Who will be our 2014 British Champions? “We have put a whole new competition structure in place in the last year that has really helped develop the elite side of our sport, creating a pathway that means from a younger age our gymnasts are working towards major events like the World age-group championships. It’s all work in progress but it has been a good start with our gymnasts competing in great venues across the country culminating in these British Championships at the brilliant Echo Arena. Another change we have seen is the appointment of National Coaches in place for the three sports, alongside which have begun to introduce national squad training sessions from junior to senior level at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, which is making a real difference. Our trampoline gymnasts have had some really good senior results in the past year particularly in the team event where our women are the World and European Champions with the likes of Kat Driscoll, Bryony Page, Pam Clark, Laura Gallagher and Amanda Parker while on the men’s side Luke Strong won our first European individual medal in over 30 years. FEATURE FIVE MINUTES WITH TRAMPOLINE GYMNAST PAMELA CLARK A head of the 2014 Championships we caught up with City of Liverpool trampoline gymnast Pamela Clark. PAMELA CLARK “I’m hoping to make my first senior World Championships later this year and looking to aim for the top 24 then top 8 for the final. After coming fourth at the World Cup recently I now know I can compete with the best.” Pam is a member of the senior GBR trampoline team joining a squad of gymnasts who have experienced incredible international results including being crowned World and European team champions. The 18-year-old has taken the step to senior level and is enjoying being part of such a successful group… “At first, becoming a senior was a bit daunting as the women’s team are very strong. They’ve won Wold and European titles but training with them and getting to know them better has been really fun and now we all just feel like a big family. Making the 2014 European team and retaining the title was a big thing for the team and for me. It was my first major senior international so I was a bit nervous but I went out there and just had fun. I was enjoying both the atmosphere and experience. I finished 9th overall individually too and although I was a little disappointed to just miss out on the final I was really happy with the result and that my scores contributed to the team.” Pam began her career in her native Scotland before moving to the prestigious City of Liverpool trampoline club and can’t wait for her first senior British Championships… “I’m originally from East Kilbride which is about an hour from Glasgow. Since I was a junior I had thought about how I would prepare for senior competition. Progressing as a senior I felt like it would help a lot to train with other senior athletes and made the move to Liverpool Trampoline Club which has made a huge impact to my career. It’s fantastic training with other team members, getting the best coaching and training alongside artistic gymnastic champions. One of the reasons I made the move was for my studies too and now I’m at university at Liverpool John Moores doing a degree in Sport Development and Physical Education. I’ve just finished my first year and it has been a fun experience as well as training. I’m really looking forward to the British Championships, especially as it’s being held in the city of my club. As a first year senior this will be the first time I’ve competed against some of the more experienced girls in a home event. This year, all three of our routines will count towards medal positions, not just the final routine, so there’s lots of pressure and it’s not only new for the audience but for the gymnast too, so we are really excited!” After the British Championships, focus then turns to the World Championships, something Pam is clearly focussed on. “I’m hoping to make my first senior World Championships later this year and looking to aim for the top 24 then top 8 for the final. After coming fourth at the World Cup recently I now know I can compete with the best.” 2014 TRAMPOLINE, TUMBLING & DMT BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 25 THANKS 2014 TRAMPOLINE, TUMBLING & DMT BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS THANKS JUDGES Adam Rear Alison Payne Andrea Holmes Andrew Aistrup Andrew Coulter Andrew Jones Anne Skyrme Bill Leach Biz Scales Brian Scott Bruce Craig Charlotte Reeks Clive Morgan Gemma Evans Helen Moore John Beeton John Murray John Wills Julie Jenkins June Short Karen Adams Kevin Dixon Jackson Lydia Hull Lynda Tee Marthe DesmaraisMoen Martin Barnett Martin Laws Mel Alesi Mike Armstrong Peter Heames Phil Bruce Sally Slinger Sarah Hough Sarah Scott Steve Bailey Steve Sampson Sue Freeman Yasmin Stammers BRITISH GYMNASTICS BOARD OF DIRECTORS Chair Matt Neville President Alan Sommerville OBE Chief Executive Officer Jane Allen Non-Executive Directors Marzena Bogdanowicz Dr Nicola Bolton Brian Everett MBE Barry McNeill Sara Sutcliffe David Watt Executive Directors Michelle Fulford Mark Gannon Martin Reddin OFFICIALS SPECIAL THANKS Novum Audio Visual, Event Presentation Olly Munro, Announcer Jamie Halsey, Announcer BGtv, Production Steve Walsh, Production BG Score Team & Alto Digital, Scoring and Results Ross Whittaker, Time of Flight BG Medical Team Lorraine Clarke, Kathy Webb, John Atkinson, Alison Andrew, Alex Deller, Dom Elsom, Trampoline DMT & Tumbling Floor Managers The Trampoline & Tumbling Technical Committee 26 Hartford School of Gymnastics & City of Liverpool Gymnastics Club British Gymnastics Leadership Academy Volunteers 2014 TRAMPOLINE, TUMBLING & DMT BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS DISCOVER DISABILITY GYMNASTICS www.DiscoverGymnastics.uk Gymnastics is an inclusive sport.
