UNLOCKING HIS CAREER: Apprentice Luke Parker busy at work
Colleges team up for
apprenticeship opportunities
T
he council is working with two local
colleges in Lincolnshire to provide
apprenticeship opportunities in the
authority’s repairs team.
Students from grantham College and
Boston College are now working with
repairs staff in four roles to boost young
people’s training in construction trades.
Three apprentices have joined from
grantham College in joinery and
plumbing on two year courses.
Paul Ward, head of Work Based
Learning and apprenticeships at the
college said: “apprenticeships are
playing a major role in getting young
people into employment while
providing employers with a cost
effective method of bringing essential
new skills to their business.
“This is the latest welcome addition
to our programme in what has been a
record year when we have supported
over 900 apprentices.
“We’re very pleased to be working in
partnership with SKdC and look forward
to helping their apprentices make the
most of these great opportunities with
the council.”
The partnership with Boston College
has resulted in a trainee electrician
taking up an advanced apprenticeship
national vocational Qualification (nvQ).
This will teach the successful student
the skills and knowledge required to
install electro technical systems and
equipment in buildings, structures and
the environment.

South Kesteven district Council with this
fantastic new trade apprenticeship
opportunity.
“This is safe in the knowledge that
with the training the apprentice receives
from Boston College and the mentoring

will grow and encourage new talent of
the future.”

edition of SKtoday to help us become
recycling champions.
We already know that our residents
are good at recycling but we want to
be even better to help reduce
contamination.
Contamination is the name given to
items that turn up in silver bins or clear
bags even though they are not
recyclable.
The wheel has proved popular with
both adults and children in the past,
telling everyone what items should go
in each of our black, silver and green
bins – or clear or pink bags - through a
simple colour coding system.

during this month an education
pack to inform children what items can
go in their bins at home will be rolled
out to all primary schools.
This will complement an advertising
campaign on the side of refuse lorries
and adverts and features in the local
press praising residents for having
contamination free bins or bags during
our random checks.
We’re committed to reducing
contamination and enhancing our
recycling rates as much as possible. The
feedback from residents and teachers
with the educational programme to date
is encouraging.

BC one’s antiques roadshow will be
filming for its 37th series in the
grounds of Belton house, near
grantham on Thursday, 31July.
The doors open at 9.30am and close
at 4.30pm. entry to the show is free.
and the council is hoping to take part
in the show by submitting something
with a strong local connection to be
valued.
an oil on canvass by local artist Terry
Shelbourne, depicting the steam
locomotive mallard, could be featured.
The painting was completed in 1989 and
shows the engine breaking the world
land speed record of 126mph at Little
Bytham in 1938.

This would follow on from the hugely
successful Story of Speed festival held in
grantham last summer when more than
15,000 people came to see the historic
locomotive back so close to where the
record was set.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Linda neal
said: “We are delighted that the antiques
roadshow is coming to South Kesteven.
We are always trying to showcase our
beautiful district and exposure on
national television on a programme that
regularly attracts more than eight
million viewers is a great opportunity for
us that we are working hard to make the
most of.”

garden waste collected from their
homes rather than having to make
trips to their local household waste
recycling centre.
SKdC’s portfolio holder for

Smith said: “The fact that so many
of our residents joined the service
last year just goes to show how
much people value what we
provide and what good value for
money it really is.”

Cllr Smith added: “Whilst everyone
has the choice about joining our garden
waste service we would encourage
anyone not in the scheme to be
responsible with their garden waste.
You can recycle it at your local waste
and recycling centre or alternatively
compost it.”

welcome pack which will include a
sticker for your green bin(s). This will
help us to identify which green bins
have been paid for to ensure that we
only empty green bins belonging to
users of the service.

Tourism on show at national exhibition
isitor attractions across South
Kesteven have been showcased by
SKdC at the uK’s premier tourism event
in Birmingham – The Best of Britain and
ireland.
Stamford, named as the best place to
live by the Sunday Times last year, was
in the spotlight in the two day
exhibition, complete with its georgian
architecture, niche retailers, and even
ghost walks.
The council joined a visit england
exhibition area that included Lincoln
Cathedral, Waddington air Show and
Lincolnshire aviation heritage in a new
drive to put the district on the visitor
map for new venues, destinations,

locations for conferences,
accommodation and ideas.
it used the opportunity to promote
September’s gravity fields festival in
and around grantham and Bourne’s
planned Brm Town Trail charting the
town’s motor racing traditions.
Linking with Lincolnshire aviation
heritage, the council also unveiled
proposals for its new aviation heritage
trail focused on local World War ii
activities leading up to d-day and the
following arnhem airlift – filling a gap in
the history of Lincolnshire as Bomber
County.
Copies of the 2014 South
Lincolnshire visitor guide were handed
out, complete with accommodation
providers, arts Centre programmes in
grantham and Stamford and
information on all towns.
Cllr Bob adams, portfolio holder for
leisure, arts and culture, said how
important it was for the council to be
promoting its visitor attractions. “We
have a growing range of wonderful
visitor attractions and being able to
present them to a national audience
was a great opportunity.”

this will be motivation in itself.

not feel like torture. after all,
you’ve made the decision to do
it. find something you enjoy
doing so you can take great
pleasure in overcoming the
challenges and progress your
fitness levels.
Make a diet plan – food is 90%
of the health and fitness battle,
and making a diet plan will
ensure you stay on track. By
eating a balanced mix of
proteins, fats and carbohydrates
you will reap the benefits of your
physical training routine.

Keep on top of your progress –
a fitness journal will help keep
your exercise routine on track,
especially when you need an
extra bit of motivation. You can
always look back to see how far
you’ve come, and see where
you’re going.
Try something new - it is
important to keep your exercise
regime fresh, so that you don’t

things. Try different classes
during the week or contact a
personal trainer to spice up your
routine!
Don't overdo it! - While exercise
shouldn't be easy, you shouldn't
injure yourself by working too
hard. Your body needs to recover
between exercises, particularly if
you are new to working out - so
make sure you give yourself
some time to relax.
Forget your excuses! - Whatever
excuses you may have used
before for not exercising, try and
forget about it and think of all
the potential benefits instead!

Kesteven district Council to help
identify and promote grantham’s

Two schoolgirls from Kesteven and
grantham girls’ School - Jyoti Chadda
and monique anderson - scooped the
last SK Pioneers award with their great
‘Cliche’ business idea of a handy mat to

also won the daily Telegraph new
media award for their promotional
video.
Scott Weavers-Wright, recognised as
one of the most powerful people in
online retail, is the keynote speaker at
the enterprise Summit
(march 19). Scott, who

Catherine’s road and an extension of

four new studios which will bring the
total seating capacity at the venue to

The site extends as far as the
entrance to the council car park near
the Tollemache pub and the existing
Senior Citizens’ Club. The council plans
to work with organisations to
accommodate existing rights of access
and help the senior citizens’ club to
relocate to new premises to be built
behind the current cinema. The new
building will be constructed by the
council as landowners and then leased
back to end users.
The ambitious development, which
is still at an early stage, proposes three
restaurants on the side of the cinema
building and 21,000 square feet of
office space on two floors above them.
The development will consider the
remodelling of part of the council
offices as part of a cultural quarter,
including the courtyard behind the

museum and arts centre.
The development has the potential
to create new office jobs as well as
employment at the cinemas and
restaurants.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Linda neal
said: “We have made budget provision
to fund the scheme that has the
potential to transform the town into a
much more attractive destination.
“When you add in the fact that this
project will also regenerate the town it
makes absolutely good sense for us to
go ahead with the work.”

development.
Progress on site is gathering pace as
more and more new homes can be

launch last summer we have sold 18
private homes to buyers ranging from
first time buyers to investors, showing
that there is great demand for new,

While on Bellway’s aspire site, which
has 105 plots, 12 have been sold, mainly
to local buyers but others have gone to
commuters planning to travel to London
and Scotland.

speed with which early sales have been
secured at aspire is overwhelming. We
have buyers who had been waiting for
the development to open and they have

customers more privacy when they are
meeting.
“These changes have come as a
direct result of feedback from the users
of this facility which shows that not
only are we are listening to what they
want, but also know how important it is
that residents let us know if they think
we could make a change that would
improve our service offer.”

hese are exciting
times for everyone
in South Kesteven.
We are involved in
major projects in
many areas that will
benefit our
communities and yet
we have still been
able to freeze our
portion of your council tax bill.
We did consult with you on the
possibility of increasing council tax by
1.75% but thanks to lots of hard work
and diligence we have been able to
hold the bill to the same level as last
year.
i don't think this achievement should
be under estimated and it certainly
would not have been possible without
the £2.3 million savings that we have
made across the authority since the
financial year 2010-11.
however, we are not complacent and
we will continue to try and make
savings because each year seems to be
tougher than the one we have just
made provision for.
But we are still ambitious and want
to drive our district forward and that is
why i am so pleased that we have been
able to bring forward a £6 million plan
for a multiplex cinema in grantham.
it’s not just about having blockbuster
releases on show; it’s also about creating
new office space, restaurants and kickstarting the whole of the town centre
from which everyone can benefit.
and we’re not only working in
grantham. We’re building council
houses in Stamford for the first time in
10 years and our new customer access
point for the south of the area in Bourne
saw an incredible 30,000 customers in
the first six months of operation.
visitors can access 31 different
services that we provide, register a birth,
death or marriage, or even change a
library book from the new facility.
and all this and more without having
to increase council tax – i think that is
really something to shout about!

COMING DOWN: Demolition makes way
for new council homes in Grantham
Out with the old in with the new
– the first of our new council
house projects gets underway!

part of a two year building
programme to provide 33 new homes
in our district.
demolition work started in January
to clear the site on Sandon road in
grantham. The development includes
four two-bed flats which could be
ready for occupation later this year.
The work kicks off the building of
the first council homes to be built in
the district for nearly 10 years.
Cllr Terl Bryant, cabinet member for
good housing, said he was delighted to
see that building work had started and
was confident that the new homes
would be of benefit to the district.
he said: “We are investing £1 million
this year and a further £2 million next
year. housing legislation has changed,
allowing us more flexibility in terms of
building new homes. The mix of
property types will suit tenants of all
ages and some will meet the specific
needs of people with disabilities.”

homes in our district, our plans to build
new homes will generate construction
jobs and secure many more with
suppliers through the purchase of
materials and services.
all land to be developed is council
owned and is made up of former
housing and garage sites which have
already been cleared of buildings.
designs include one, two, three and
four bedroom flats, houses and
bungalows to go into the council’s
housing stock.
high energy performance is a key
factor, providing affordable warmth for
residents, and all should meet ‘Lifetime
homes’ standards; suitable for tenants
of all ages and with ease of access for
those with a disability or requiring
wheelchair access.
other sites include east avenue,
grantham (three) and Thames road,
grantham (two).
in Stamford 20 new homes are
planned off Lincoln road with a further
four on glen Crescent.
