President's Message
Our last meeting Joan and I discussed some of the thoughts and processes
that an artist will consider when planning a solo show. We do these
shows so we can sell our art. It is a great feeling when someone buys our
art and it is that feeling we want to experience as often as possible. So I
encourage each of you to find a way to express your thoughts when
talking to customers and showing your work. Regardless of your medium,
the world would be very dull without visual art. Visual art, whether one
is aware of it or not, saturates our society, giving depth, color, identity,
and meaning to our ideas, to information, and to ongoing
communication. Visual arts, as music, theater, dance, and the written
word, are a real and solid reflection of the character and vision of
humanity in each moment and era of our existence.
These ideas are being shared with you as other artists have shared with
me. Sharon Bibbee

Member Q&As:
Q. Is one legally required to have a sales tax license in order to
participate in a show?
A. The State of Texas requires sale tax to be collected on all retail sales.
It is very easy to get your sales tax certificate by logging on the State of
Texas website and following the prompts.
Q. I would like to know at what level is an artist considered a
“Hobbyist” versus a registered “Business”?
A. The difference between a person considered a hobbyist versus a
business is simply “Intent”. Often one starts out painting for the love of
painting. As time goes by you sell a painting here and there. Later, you
begin selling your art on a more regular basis. The answer for each artist is
to decide for themselves. I suggest you read Publication 17 – Hobbyist IRC
183 – Activities not engaged in for profit. Business IRC 61 and 162 discusses
one participating on a regular basis with the intent to make a profit. By the
way, Publication 17 can be found on the website www.irs.gov/publications.
In general a hobbyist has income and expense and the deduction of
expenses should be limited to the income.
Whereas a business can deduct business expense even if the business
income is less than the expenses. Again, intent is the determining factor.
Q. It is not clear when a sales license in required?
A. A sales tax certificate is required when you are showing your art. The
Comptroller’s Office with the State of Texas makes several checks when
they hear about art shows and festivals. If they ask you for your sales tax
certificate you must show it to them.
Q. At what point does one require the services of an Attorney?
A. That is difficult to say since obtaining legal service is based on your
needs and expertise. You can get a lot of information from the State of
Texas and the IRS on building a small business. If that is too difficult to
deal with, you may want to seek legal advice.

it’s a very meditative and a spiritual process, Elena never sketches them
and uses unique dot-to-dot technique for her ceramic plates, every plate is
"one of a kind", ideas and inspiration comes from all around - art, music,
architecture etc. Right now Elena is working on her drawings and on using
her patterns on different products such as fabric, phone cases and many
more.

"When I am not working
with my dogs, or hanging
out with my horses, you
can usually find me in
my studio creating
something! I have always
been creative, but like
most Mom's, many years
were focused on raising
the kids and giving them
their wings. During that
time, my passion was
photography.
In 2006, I returned to painting, taking an Acrylics class at the New Braunfels
Art League. From there, I have worked in pastel, watercolor, oil and
collage. Most of my work centers around animals from photos I have taken,
and abstracts. Sometimes a combination of both. When I work with pastels
and oils, it is landscapes that seem to delightfully emerge. In collage, I use
torn pieces of painted papers to create the "brush strokes" of colors that
become the subject, be it a poinsettia, an apple or yet another animal.
I am always open to the challenge of a new medium. You never know
where it will take you....
I am a member of the New Braunfels Art League, where I am a Co-Team
Leader for Workshops. I am also a member of the Canyon Lake Art Guild.
I live in New Braunfels, with my husband Steve, 3 Horses, 6 Dogs, 2 Cats
and bountiful Wildlife. I look forward to being a part of CAS.
"VIOLET CACTI" is my first Oil I did in a workshop with Vie Dunn-Harr.
(12x16) Loved working in this medium!"
Exhibit News & Sales
Hecho en Mexico: Current Exhibit runs February-April 2014
A little reminder...
Just a reminder to all artists that exhibit in our CAS venues, if you sell a
piece of art you need to send a check to CAS for the 15% commission.
Please Don’t Forget!
Reasons why you should participate in CAS exhibits...
You might actually sell some art (Yes, people do buy art from these
exhibits!)
AND you would be able to get some of your art out of your house!
It’s a great avenue to expose your art to the public. Clients and customers
of the venue, their friends and families will view your art where CAS
exhibits. Plus, you can tell your friends and contacts where to go to see
your art in person.
Helping install/strike CAS exhibits gives you the opportunity to meet and
work with other CAS artists as you learn what it takes to install an exhibit.
The more folks we have involved in these installations, the less work there
is for any one individual.

exhibit, so expect to see a call of art in the next couple of months.
• Dougherty Buttridge Gallery central
Our tentative dates for this exhibit art Oct 29 – December 1, so we have
plenty of time to plan for this juried exhibit. And this should give our
artists plenty of time to come up with some fabulous art to exhibit.
Note to Artists: Please submit your responses to the CAS calls for art in a
timely manner. Over the past few months, venue coordinators have had to
send as many as 3 calls to get sufficient art for a venue. This results in
extra work for the coordinators and gives them very little time to prepare
for an upcoming exhibit (ie., making labels, etc.). If we continue to have
this lackluster response, we are likely to have to drop some of the venues.
We are also looking for additional spaces to exhibit, like AMOA, Austin Art
Space, or other venues that we don’t know about. But we can only do all
these with your help.
Please think about volunteering to help hang or take charge of some of the
existing (or new) venues, so you see how our process works. If you are
interested in helping please let Martha Kull or Liz Jenson know.

Venues can only accommodate a certain number of pieces. In the
event of a large number of entries, the show may be considered full
BEFORE the deadline for label information.
Pieces must be suitable for general public viewing. Can mean no
nudity, or violence or other subject matter we would normally
consider inappropriate for a venue. Bare branches are not a good
idea. Choose something up-lifting, joyful, playful, beautiful.
IMPORTANT: When emailing label info, please state in the subject header
venue and label info (example: “Cypress Grill label info”). It’s hard for the
label person to know everyone’s names, and this way we know it’s label
info and not SPAM! Also this way if it ends up in our spam email we know
what it is and it does not belong there!
Featured Artist Sally Hengst
Sally is a charter member of the Creative Arts Society. She has been
recognized many times over the years for her art work. A piece of her art
was recently selected “Encaustic 101” for the 10th Anniversary 2014
People’s Gallery Exhibition at Austin City Hall. The exhibit will be on
display from February 28, 2014 – January 9, 2015, in a special area
dedicated for artists with disabilities, sponsored by VSA of Texas.

More from Sally
"While I was in high school, I took business classes and art. Decided to
travel vs. going to college. Did some brain "research"; came up with the
following remembrances of my travels. Not sure of sequence order but was
a fantastic opportunity! When I graduated grammar school to high school, I
had taken art classes at the California College of Arts and Crafts located
nearby where I took the bus to the convent school I attended. While not a
Catholic, my mother insisted on the best education she could afford. My
Art Teacher was also my Spanish teacher (she would throw a bean bag to
her students and we had to answer her question in either English or
Spanish (whichever was called out)! Needless to say, I always remember
her. In fact, I have one of her watercolor paintings to this day. Instead of
starting college, I decided to do a lot of traveling. A friend joined me for
part of the way and returned home while I continued my adventures!
Visited Mexico City where I had relatives and attended their son's wedding.
While there, I asked where the art galleries/Museums were and visited
them, often asking for directions in my broken Spanish...ALWAYS grateful
to speak with someone in English! I carried a 5x7 card with English/Spanish
questions as a refresher and showed them as necessary(which was often!)
People were very kind (altho I imagined they said there's another
gringo!/gringa!)
I wasn't frightened, altho hesitant sometimes when I was in search of a
location (I can barely read a map now!) I recall a lady taking my hand and
walked me to the location I was looking for...will NEVER forget that! Don't
know if Americans would be that gracious(?).
I visited Paris and their famous art museums and some galleries that were
tucked away on small streets...there was endless art to view. I could go on
and on but the places I visited, ALL had museums some with great
collections, others with less but quality ALWAYS exceptional. It was so
great to find exhibits on "hidden" or tucked away galleries...each day was a
new Adventure, ALWAYS TO BE REMEMBERED TO THIS DAY! "
TIPS, TRICKS AND LINKS
Information compiled from from http://jackyliz.knoji.com/ and Teach Yourself Drawing by
Ronald Smith. Thanks Brian and Patrick for the great idea.
Pencils 101
Here are some tips on choosing and using the best-known and most
widely used drawing implement - graphite pencils. There is advice how
to choose pencils, how to sharpen them and how to care for them.
Types of Pencils
There are several types of pencil, named according to the nature of the
inner core which is the part that makes the mark. "Lead" pencils are the
best known, though the "lead" is actually graphite mixed with clay.
Choosing Pencils
"Lead" pencils come in several grades according to how hard or soft the
inner core is (determined by the proportion of clay to graphite - the more
clay, the softer the result .) The "H" grades are, as you might
expect, hard, make a light line and are good for technical drawing but
not really suitable for expressiveness as there isn't much variation in the
marks they make. They usually run from 9H, the hardest, through 8H,
7H etc., to H which is softer but still too hard for artists' drawings. The
"B" grades are the softer ones (the B stands for Black!) and are far better
for this purpose. They run from 9B to B - the higher the number, the
softer the pencil core. Grades 9B down to 4B will give lovely velvety dark
tones and will smudge easily, which can give beautiful results. For
general purposes either 2B or 3B is most versatile - these will give
precision but also good gradation of dark tones. Pencils vary with the
make too, so a 2B from one manufacturer may give a different result to
another, so again, try them out. The ordinary pencil you find in the kids'
school bag is usually HB (or possibly F, meaning Fine) which is in the
middle and though it can be useful, it isn't as expressive as something a
little softer.
Sharpening Pencils
If at all possible, avoid mechanical
"pencil sharpeners". A sharp
blade gives a far more sensitive point
to work with. It doesn't wear down as
quickly as a machined point and is
much more satisfying to use.
A few tips:
A Stanley type knife is best
Don't use the knife like a potato peeler!
The golden rule is to keep the knife quite still
It takes a bit of practice and the lead may well break the first few times,
but it is worth persevering.
Here is a good video to learn the technique:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtF3H6VN1-U
Caring for Pencils
Try not to drop them on the floor or the leads will break. Store them in a
cushion-lined box for the same reason, preferably fixed together with an
elastic band to prevent them rattling against each other in
transit. Remember to sharpen at the other end from where the pencil
grade is printed.
Care in choosing, sharpening and looking after your pencils will reward
you with more success in your drawings.
