EXCELLENT REASONS TO COME
TURKEY is a kaleidoscope of cultural diversity, art history and ancient civilizations…
Culture & Art: Turkey's history of human habitation goes back 25,000 years. Some of the earliest-known human communities are here. Hittites, Phrygians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, Seljuks, Mongols, Ottomans and others
have all left their works of art and culture in what is now the Turkish homeland. Modern Turkey has all this—and more
mobile phones than you've ever seen in one place before.
Special-Interest Activities: With nearly 8400 km (5200 mi) of coastline, water sports and yachting are big favourites.
Hiking, white-water rafting, mountain-climbing and bicycling are all important, and growing, as is skiing
Anatolia has been the birthplace of the three major religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This fact alone, lends
Turkey its unique and invaluable cultural and archaeological heritage. Because of its secular position in the world, the
Turkish attitude toward religion has been on of tolerance.
Twenty civilizations and 10,000 years of history have left Turkey with a breathtaking legacy of ancient ruins and
archaeological sites, many of which are still under excavation.
“Crossroads of Civilizations”. Ancient Greeks, Persians, Arabs, Romans, Byzantines, and the Ottomans.
More Roman sites than Italy… More ancient Greek sites than in Greece
Proximity. Istanbul is easy to reach from all around the world. It is 11 hours from the East coast of North America and
Singapore, around 6 hours from Delhi and 2 - 3 hours from Europe.
Flights. Almost all major international airlines serve Istanbul, and the National carrier, Turkish Airlines (THY), offers
direct flights from over 66 international cities. Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport is only ½ hour by road from downtown Istanbul. Domestic flights are available every day and take just 40- 60 minutes. Istanbul’s International airport with its 18
gates terminal is able to handle 15 million passengers.
Safety. Has the lowest European crime rate, among the very lowest in the world.
Hotels. All main International chains are in Istanbul, all offering luxury and an excellent standard of service
Hospitality. In Turkish tradition, each guest is a gift of God. Genuinely warm and friendly, Turkish hospitality guarantees memories for a lifetime.
Value for money. The very best in Europe, one of the best worldwide. The right place to treat you!
Food. One of the 3 best cuisines in the world. All foods freshly prepared. Wide range of starters (meze), fish, meat, all
types of fruit and vegetables imaginable, desserts to suit everyone’s palate

Main Regions of Turkey
General Information
Turkey, known officially as the Republic of Turkey, is a Eurasian country that stretches across the Anatolian
peninsula in Western Asia and Thrace in the Balkan region of southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight
countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran
to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus are to the south; the Aegean
Sea to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. Separating Anatolia and Thrace are the Sea of Marmara and
the Turkish Straits (the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles), which are commonly reckoned to delineate the boundary between Europe and Asia, thereby making Turkey a country of significant geostrategic importance. The
actual area of Turkey inclusive of its lakes, is 814,578 square kilometers, of which 790,200 are in Asia and
24,378 are located in Europe.
Geography: Although it is made up mainly of mountains and hills, Turkey can be divided into seven distinct
geographic regions: Thrace and the borderlands of the Marmara Sea, the Aegean and Mediterranean region, the
Black Sea region, western Anatolia, the central Anatolian plateau, the eastern highlands, and southeast Anatolia.
Thrace and the borderlands of the Marmara Sea contain a central plain of gently rolling hills. The region’s eastern portion reaches 2,543 meters (8,343 feet) atop Mount Uludag. The coastlands of the Aegean and Mediterranean region are narrow and hilly, while those of the Black Sea rise steeply to the heights of the Pontic Mountains. Western Anatolia consists of irregular ranges and interior valleys separating the Aegean coast from the
central Anatolian plateau, Turkey’s largest geographic region. The plateau is completely surrounded by mountains. The eastern highlands are the country’s most mountainous and rugged region and the site of Mount Ararat, Turkey’s highest peak at 5,137 meters (16,854 feet). Southeast Anatolia is a rolling plateau enclosed on the
north, east, and west by mountains.
Climate: Although Turkey is situated in a geographical location where climatic conditions are quite temperate,
the diverse nature of the landscape , and the existence in particular of the mountains that run parallel to the
coasts, results in significant differences in climatic conditions from one region to the other. While the coastal
areas enjoy milder climates, the inland Anatolian plateau experiences extremes of hot summers and cold winters with limited rainfall.
Language: Turkish, the official language of the country, is related to the Uralic-Altaic languages spoken across
Asia from Finland to Dongbei Pingyuan. Arabic is spoken in the regions bordering Syria. English is an increasingly popular second or third language.
Turkey on international arena: •Council of Europe (1949) •NATO (1952) •OECD (1961) •OSCE (1973)
(*) •G20 Industrial nations (1999) •EU Full membership negotiations in 2005 •EEC Associate member since
1963 •EU Customs union agreement in 1995
(*) Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe

The Marmara Region occupies the northwest corner of the country and represents 8.5% of the total area of Turkey with its
67.000 square kilometers of
land. Being a point of juncture between Europe and
Asia, this area has seen
thousands of tribes and their
civilizations
passing
through, from one continent
to the other.

Aegean Region. Aegean
shores are among the loveliest landscapes in the country. The magnificent coastline, lapped by the clear
water of the Aegean Sea, abounds in vast and pristine beaches surrounded by olive groves, rocky crags and pine woods. Dotted
with idyllic fishing harbors, popular holiday villages and the remains of more than 5,000 years of history, culture and mythology, this region offers a holiday with something for everyone - nature lovers, sun worshippers, photographers, sports enthusiasts, sailors and archaeologists. Along the whole length of the coast, accommodations to suit every taste and price range can be
found.
Main Sights: Aphrodisias, Assos, Bodrum (Halicarnassus), Caunos, Cesme, Datca, Cnidos, Ephesus, Foca (Phokaia), Kusadasi,

Mediterranean region takes its name from the Mediterranean Sea, and occupies 15% of the total area of Turkey with its
120.000 square kilometers of land. West and Mid-Taurus mountains run parallel to the coast line. Because of high and steep
mountains, the valleys between the sea and mountain range are very narrow, the width varies between 120-180 kilometers.
There are some important rivers rising especially during the Spring when the snow is melting, and many lakes on the highlands with a great nature. The population is concentrated especially at the locations suitable for agriculture, tourism, industry and commerce. Main Sights: Demre (Myra), Fethiye (Telmessos), Kas, Kalkan, Aperlai, Isinda, Patara, Xanthos, Letoon,

Black Sea Region. Northern Anatolian region along the Black Sea occupies 18% of the total area of Turkey with its 141.000
square kilometers of land. This northern coastal region has a steep and rocky coast, and rivers cascade through gorges of
the coastal ranges. A few of the large rivers, those cutting back through the Pontus Mountains (Dogu Karadeniz Daglari),
have tributaries that flow in broad, elevated basins. Access inland from the coast is limited to a few narrow valleys, and, as a
result, the coast has always been isolated from the interior. The population and cities are concentrated along the coast line.
Main Sights: Bithynia, Pontus, Safranbolu and traditional Turkish houses
Central Anatolia Region. Although termed a plateau, this region is actually quite diverse. Stretching inland from the Aegean, it occupies the area between the two zones of folded mountains, extending east to the point where the two mountain
ranges converge. Central Anatolian region occupies 19% of the total area of Turkey with its 151.000 square kilometers of
land, it's the second largest region of Turkey after Eastern Anatolia. The plateau-like, arid highlands of Anatolia are considered the heartland of the country. Main Sights: Cappadocia, Tuz (Salt)Lake, Catalhoyuk, Gordion (Gordium), Hattusas,
Phrygia and the Phrygians
Eastern Turkey, where the Pontus and Taurus Mountains converge, is rugged country with higher elevations, a more
severe climate, and greater precipitation than on the Anatolian plateau. The average elevation of the peaks is greater than
2,000 meters. Mount Ararat is located in this area. Many of the peaks are extinct volcanoes that have been active in the
recent past, as evidenced by widespread lava flows. Eastern Anatolian is the largest region of Turkey occupying 21% of the
total area of the country with its 163.000 square kilometers of land. Main Sights: Mount Ararat, Akdamar, Ani site, Van Lake,
Tigris
Southeast Region. This region is geographically the smallest region of Turkey representing only 9.7% of the total area of
Turkey with its 75.000 square kilometers of land certainly not that small with respect to natural and historical beauties it
possesses. This region of ancient cities, is adorned by attractive natural figures, constituting a real mixture of sights and
past combined with originality. Thanks to GAP (Southeastern Anatolian Project) the area is having great changes positively;
many farming lands and dam lakes were formed lately with this project. Valleys and Plateaus occupy large areas in the
south of southeast Taurus mountains. Main Sights: Commagene, Nemrut Dag (Mount Nemrut), Hasankeyf, Zeugma, Gobeklitepe

Main Cities of Turkey
Daily Tours in & beyond Istanbul
Istanbul, historically also known as Byzantium and Constantinople) is the largest city in
Turkey and fifth largest city proper in the world with a population of 12.6 million. Istanbul is
also a megacity, as well as the cultural and financial centre of Turkey. The city covers 39
districts of the Istanbul province. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the
natural harbour known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both
on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby
the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330–395), the Eastern Roman
(Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the
Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for
2010. The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
Ankara is the capital of Turkey and the country's second largest city after Istanbul with
population of 5,751,360,. The history of Ankara and its surroundings stretches back to the
Hatti civilisation of the Bronze Age. Two thousand years before the Jesus, the Hittites become the dominant power of the region, and were then followed by the Phyrgians, Lydians
and Persians. In the 3rd Century BC, a Celtic race known as the Galatians made Ankara their
capital city. The name Ankara comes from the word 'Ancyra', which means 'anchor.'
Izmir, historically Smyrna, is Turkey's third most populous city and the country's second
largest port city after Istanbul. It is located along the outlying waters of the Gulf of Izmir, by
the Aegean Sea. The total population of the province is 3,795,978.
Izmir has almost 3,500 years of urban history. Lying on an advantageous location at the head
of its gulf running down in a deep indentation midway on the western Anatolian coast, the
city has been one of the principal mercantile cities of the Mediterranean Sea for much of its
history. Modern Izmir also incorporates the nearby ancient cities of Ephesus, Pergamum, Sardis and Klazomenai.
Antalya, Turkey's the most popular resort in the Mediterranean region (ancient Pamphylia),
is an attractive city with shady palm-lined boulevards, a prize-winning marina on the Mediterranean. In the picturesque old quarter, Kaleici, narrow winding streets and old wooden
houses abut the ancient city walls. Since its founding in the second century B.C. by Attalus II,
a king of Pergamum, who named the city Attaleai after himself, Antalya has been continuously inhabited. The Romans, Byzantines and Seljuks in turn occupied the city before it came
under Ottoman rule.
Bodrum. The reputation of Bodrum boatyards dates back to ancient times, and today, craftsmen still build the traditional yachts: the Tirhandil with a pointed bow and stern, and the
Gullets with a broad beam and rounded stern. An impressive medieval castle built by the
Knights of Rhodes guards the entrance to Bodrum's dazzling blue bay, in which the Aegean
and the Mediterranean Seas meet. The town's charm is well-known, attracting a diverse
population of vacationers who stroll along its long palm-lined waterfront, while elegant
yachts crowd the marina.
Trabzon, historically known as Trapezus and Trebizond, is a city on the Black Sea coast.
Trabzon, located on the historical Silk Road, became a melting pot of religions, languages and
culture for centuries and a trade gateway to Iran in the southeast, Russia and the Caucasus to
the northeast. The Venetian and Genoese merchants paid visits to the city and sold silk, linen
and woolen fabric. During the Ottoman period, Trabzon, because of the importance of its
port, became a focal point of trade to Iran, India and the Caucasus. Trabzon formed the basis
of several states in its long history, and was the capital city of the Empire of Trebizond.

Day 6. Sunday. Full Day Istanbul Tour (B, L)
Breakfast at the hotel and start your tour of Istanbul and visit Turkey's most famous museums and mosques: the
Imperial Hippodrome – witness of the illustrious past that imbue the entire area with a
sense of history. See the impressive granite Obelisk of Theodosius carved in Egypt around
1450 BC; so-called "Serpentine Column". The three intertwined bronze serpents form the
column. This column was brought from the Temple of Apollo Delphi Greece dedicated to God
by the 31 Greek cities who defeated the Persians at Platea in 479 BC; the "Colossus" or "the
column of Constantine Porphyrgenitus; the "German Fountain" or "Fountain of Kaiser
Wilhelm II" that commemorates the alliance of German Empire and Ottoman Empire against
the allied powers of Russia, Great Britain, France and Japan before the World War I.
Next, visit Hagia Sophia Cathedral Museum, the church of Holy Wisdom which, undoubtedly
is one of the greatest architectural creations in the world. Nowhere is Istanbul's exceptional
status as former capital of both the Christian and Islamic empires more evident than in this
monumental basilica crowned with four minarets. Built by the Emperor Justinian circa AD
535, it was converted to a mosque by the conquering Ottoman armies in 1453. But it's only
when you enter the building that you get a true sense of its awesome proportions. For a
thousand years its dome was the largest in the world - 30 m in diameter, surpassed only in the
16th century with the construction of St Peter's in Rome.
Directly facing Hagia Sophia, raises another architectural masterpiece, the Mosque of Sultan
Ahmet or better known as Blue Mosque, perhaps the most instantly recognizable - and
unforgettable - silhouette on Istanbul's skyline.
Later, have a unique chance to travel between Europe & Asia within minutes. Drive by coach
via the Intercontinental Bosphorus Bridge to Çamlica Hill on the Asian side to see the
beautiful panoramic view of Istanbul. Visit the Beylerbeyi Palace – the summer residence of
Ottoman Sultans with original furniture and magnificent gardens
Return to hotel for
overnight
Day 7. Monday. Full Day Istanbul Tour (B, L)
Breakfast at the hotel and join another day tour of Istanbul. Your first visit will be to hustling
and bustling Spice Market, also known as Egyptian Bazaar, built in 1665. Spices, dried
fruits, cheeses, sausages, jams, nuts and seeds, lokum (Turkish delight) and other edibles fill
most of the shops. Lately there are also shops selling stuff other than spices: jewellery, towels,
slippers and baskets. Then, walk to the nearest pier to take a regular touristic ferry boat that
will take you for 1h30m enjoyable trip on Bosphorus Strait. From your cruise boat, you will
view the dramatic sights lining the Bosphorus’ wooded shores: mosques, the Bosphorus Bridge that for a time was the
world longest and the massive Rumeli Hisari. Noteworthy are the 19th century mansions of the Ottoman elite and the
Sultan’s fanciful gingerbread palaces and hunting lodges; most famous of them is Dolmabahçe Palace, yet another
residence of the Ottoman Sultans. Pass by the Ortakoy area with its restaurants, bars and
cafes. It was also an area were, through centuries three religions have peacefully coexisted:
there are still active church, mosque & synagogue at the same area.
In the afternoon, visit Topkapi Palace. The Great Palace of the Ottoman Sultans is the most
extensive and fascinating monument of Ottoman civil architecture in existence. In addition to
its architectural and historical interest, it contains as a museum, superb and unrivalled
collections of porcelains, armor, fabrics, jewels, illuminated manuscripts, calligraphy and
many objects of art formerly belonging to the Sultans. Topkapi was built between 1459 and
1465 as the seat of government of the newly installed Ottoman regime.
See Little Hagia Sophia Mosque, formerly the Church of the Saints Sergius and Bacchus, is a former Eastern Orthodox
Church dedicated to Saints Sergius and Bacchus in Constantinople,
converted into a mosque during the Ottoman Empire.
