Day 4 - Nagykanizsa – Hévíz Zala county In the south-western corner of Hungary, between the Lake Balaton and the River Mura lies Zala County which still preserves its ancient natural beauty. All the visitors are fascinated by this varied-surfaced region, this land is the world of the hills covered with forests and the brooks splashing in the valleys. The history of this region dates back to thousands of years, the River Zala – giving its name to the region – was known as Salla by the Romans. In the place of Mosaburg conquested by the ancient Hungarian conquerors, our king Saint Stephen built the centre of the first Hungarian county. The ancient abbeys, whitewashed small churches, castle-ruins evocate the Middle Ages, the yellow-white coloured Baroque buildings evocate the revival after the Turkish devastation. Zala County proudly preserving its own traditions is a dynamically developing region with a promising future, developing economy, constructions fitting the landscape and with friendly people. This is a myriad-minded scenery, providing an abundant gold-mine for a photographer. Tourism The county attracts more and more visitors with its untouched natural beauties, the romantic forests of Göcsej and Bakony, where the one-time highwayman called Jóska Sobri was hidden, as well as with the untouched wildlife of Small Balaton, the beaches of the "Hungarian sea" and the thermal baths. The name origins from two words (“sár” – slob and “szeg” - pole), Zala refers to the county. The surroundings of the village were asset of the Talabér family until 1950. According to an official document from 1420 the settlement was located next to an important military route. In 1550s as the nearby settlements Galambok was hit by the Turks. This time the village was hit not only by the Turks but also the defense army. The population living on animal-husbandry decayed. At the end of the 17th century new buildings were built by the new owners of the village. Created fruit gardens and pough-lands. In a few years there were no empty field in the surroundings. At the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century the settlement developed quickly. After the compromise of 1867 started the population growth. Most of the inhabitants run on animalhusbandry and the poor people were employed by the nearby manors. The electricity was set up in 1948. The village has a cinema since 1953, broadcast since 1991. Today developes the Galambok thanks to the short distance (3 km) from Zalakaros. Zalakaros and surroundings is the touristic center of the region. From point of view of nights spent in commercial accommodation Zalakaros is the 8th most popular in Hungary. History The first mention of the settlement origins from 1254 as Korus. During the Turk the settlement was hit by army of Turk and defense army as well. By this the population totally desolated. The settlement started to develop only at the end of the 19th century after drainage of marsh. By 1920s the town was connected to busnet. The post office was built also this time. After the second world war started migraion direction to developing industrial Nagykanizsa. In 1962 thermal water was explored in the territory of the settlement, in 1965 opened the thermalbath, since the opening was visited by more than 20 million tourists. Thanks to the bath the tourism started to develop in the town. Tourism From point of view of nights spent in commercial accommodation Zalakaros is the 8th most popular in Hungary by number of 431 000 nights (2012); the most of tourists come from Germany (66 000), Austria (27 000) and Czech republic (15 000). The town is famous for its thermal bath. Zalakaros, the tiniest city of Hungary, gained its fame in 1967, when an oil prospect drilling resulted in a nearly 96°C (205 °F) hot thermal spring coming up from 1000 meter. The certified medical water proved very effective in the treatment of chronic arthritis, chronic gynaecological, dental and rheumatic diseases, and prior to and after orthopaedic surgeries, neurosurgeries and operations. The wellness-, leisure- and conference hotel Karos Spa lies only 400 metres from the centre of Zalakaros in romantic atmosphere, surrounded by vineyards, forests and gently sloping hills. The name of Rada was first mentioned in 1019 in a document of Zalavár bishopry of Saint Stephen. The name Rada originally is a Slavonic name of person. By the 1500s Rada developed to an important settlement. During the Turks the settlement was ruined. In 1655 the settlement belonged to assets of Treasury. The next years the surrounding was mentioned as barren. After 1690 the settlements starts to develop again. New living houses were built and the agriculture started to develop. The main job of the inhabitants were fishing, viniculture and winemaking. It is located around 9 km southwest of the Lake Balaton. According to written sources the settlement was called 'Mosapurc' in the 9th century, "Mosapurc regia civitate". It was also known as Moosburg, Urbs Paludarum and Blatengrad in medieval records. Ján Kollár described the state of the ruins in 1841. History In the 9th century, Mosapurc or Moosburg was a fortified settlement built at the Zala river and was a capital of the Frankish vassal Balaton Principality ruled by a Slavic prince Pribina ("Privinae civitas, munimen, castrum in nemore et palude Salae" in a Salzburg chronicle). During the reign of Pribina's son, prince Kocel (861-876), in the summer of 867, it provided short-term hospitality to brothers Cyril and Methodius on their way from Great Moravia to the pope in Rome to justify the use of the Slavonic language as a liturgical language. History The first written document from Sármellék origins from 1356. As the settlement is located on the military route between Vázsony and Zagreb from 1531 frequently attacks hit the settlement. The population of the settlement frequently decreased by 1618 was totally desolated. Resusciation of Sármellék began in 1731. By the end of the 18th century Sármellék became asset of the Festetics family in Keszthely. Thanks to this measurement the population started to rise and the agriculture developed as in the other 148 settlements in the surroundings. In 1839 a church was built by the inhabitants. In 1894 the settlement was connected to the railroadnet between Zalaszentgrót and Balatonszentgyörgy. By 1952 a Soviet military airport was built between Zalavár and Sármellék, the forebear of the today commercial airport. Thanks to the traffic of the airport and interest in Small Lake by 1990s decreasing of population stopped. Cultural Fund and Association of Youth of Sármellék play important rules in cultural and sport life of the settlement. The town has on his own TV broadcast. Some archeological artefacts and fossils refer to the population of the surroundings in the prehistory. By structural erection of road number 76 in 2009 some human fossils from several ages were explored. The place of Saint Margaret chapel in the middle of the village is known from archeological exploration as well, which was built in the 11th century but was ruined in 1778. The popular Kolping Hotel was opened in 1996 in the settlement. Thanks to the Hévíz-lake, which is only in the world natural thermal lake, the settlement is highly popular point of health tourism. By this Hévíz became the second popular in nights spent in commercial accommodation city in Hungary next to Budapest. History The history of the city goes back to pre-historical ages. The healing effets of the water was well known by the Romans, this fact is referred by the coins founded in the lake around 1980 and the remains of an ancient altar around the lake. Some remains form the migration period refers to the presence of Germans and Slavonic people as well. The name of Hévíz in written was first mentioned in a document from 1328. The first study of the lake was published in 1769 by Ferenc Szláby. Creating the bath went by the the Festetics family, they were the owner of the lake and surroundings in the 18th century. Thanks to Earl Georg Festetics (I.) the bath and recreational center became popular. The today city is an union of Hévízszentandrás and Egregy in 1946. Tourism Development of the city is based on tourism. The city is the second popular according to nights spent in commercial accommodation in Hungary by 1,0 million nights (2012) next to Budapest. The main sendings are Germany (258 000), Russia (181 000) and Austria (97 000). The popularity is based on mainly the healing effect of the thermal lake. The spa and bath has already 200 years of tradition visited by houndred tousands of tourists per year.
