CONTEMPORARY INDONESIA In collaboration with Matthias Arndt BEN BROWN FINE ARTS LONDON FOREWORD We are proud to present this survey of contemporary Indonesian art here in the London gallery and we are incredibly greatful to all the artists and to Matthias Arndt and his team for making this possible. Indonesia is a country which is attracting more and more attention not only because of the quality of its contemporary art scene, but also because Indonesian collectors are making such a splash on the international art scene. We have been fortunate enough to go to Indonesia several times over the past few years and have found the scene extremely active with some very creative people. This is true in all the different media from installation to bronze sculptures to photography and obviously painting. This show and this catalogue would not be possible without many people, so thank you all for your support. Appreciation of Indonesian art in Europe is expanding at a rapid rate. There have been shows in the last few years at ARNDT, Berlin; Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton, Paris; Saatchi Gallery, London and MACRO, Rome and we are proud to be at the heart of this cultural diversity. Bringing Indonesian art to London feels right as London is the heart of the Asian – European cultural interchange. Various artists from this group will show in the Hong Kong gallery over the next few years. We look forward to seeing you in either space over the next few months. Ben Brown Andreas Hecker London Hong Kong ~5~ FROM ARTISTS’ INITIATIVES TO MARKET-ORIENTED AND COLLECTOR-DRIVEN ART PRACTICES: NOTES ON THE MODES OF ORGANISATION OF THE INDONESIAN ARTS SCENE By Matthias Arndt and Katerina Valdivia Bruch In order to introduce contemporary Indonesian art to a broader international audience, it is necessary to understand how the arts scene of Indonesia has been shaped in the last two decades. The Indonesian art scene is most prominently concentrated in the islands of Java – in the cities of Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bandung – and Bali. In recent years, there has been a dramatic shift in its structure and organisation, from that of artist-run spaces to more marketoriented art practices. Organised by communities of artists with common interests, artist-run spaces were a response to the lack of public infrastructure and support for the arts in Indonesia. These non-profit initiatives offered artists opportunities to collaborate, promoted discourse and served as gathering places where people could find the latest news of local and international art scenes. Privately run without any support from the government, these groups evolved in an organic way to shape the arts scene. Cemeti Art House, established in 1988 by the artist-couple Mella Jaarsma and Nindityo Adipurnomo in Yogyakarta, was probably the most significant and far-reaching artist initiative of the 1990s to bring Indonesian contemporary art to an international level. The space brought together artistic production, exhibitions, artist discourse and international residency programmes and was responsible for elevating many Indonesian artists to international recognition and fame. One artist who benefited from the influence and reach of Cemeti Art House is Eko Nugroho. He began his career as a local street artist and is now exhibited internationally to great acclaim. His latest solo exhibition, Témoin Hybride, ~7~ opened at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in January of this year. Influenced by graffiti, popular culture and Javanese culture, the artist playfully creates imaginary figures and animated worlds in media including embroidery, sculpture, murals, video, comic books and wayang (Javanese shadow puppets). During the 1990s, countries like Australia and Japan played major roles in the promotion of Indonesian contemporary art in the Asia Pacific region. The Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art was established in 1993 by the Queensland Art Gallery in Australia to promote the contemporary art of Asia, Australia and the Pacific. Japanese institutions such as the Fukuoka Art Museum and Japan Foundation were also very dedicated to exploring contemporary art in the region. These explorations of Indonesian contemporary art were in part due to Indonesia’s foreign relations with both countries at that time. Remarkably, the artists involved in these international exhibitions had a certain degree of autonomy from the government, allowing the creation of challenging and critical works that most likely would not be deemed suitable by the Indonesian public administration. The generation of Indonesian artists of the 1990s were characterised by a tendency to address local socio-political issues in a critical way. The provocative, dynamic work of artists such as Agus Suwage, Heri Dono, Eddie Hara, Arahmaiani, Mella Jaarsma, FX Harsono, Agung Kurniawan, Krisna Murti, Tisna Sanjaya and Nindityo Adipurnomo garnered strong international interest in Indonesian contemporary art. These artists participated in major international art events, such as the Venice Biennale and the Asia Pacific Triennial and were included in numerous group exhibitions, such as AWAS! Recent Works from Indonesia which toured to Japan, Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands and Germany from 1999–2002. FX Harsono is an example of an Indonesian artist whose work critically addresses political and social issues of his country. Born in the village of Blitar to Chinese-Indonesian parents, Harsono reflects upon the history and injustices of Chinese-Indonesian minorities in recent Indonesian history in his powerful body of work, which includes painting, installations and videos. His latest works focus on writing his Chinese name, in response to a series of laws Suharto enacted during his reign (1967–1998) that restricted the practice of Chinese customs and religion to private domains and forced ChineseIndonesians to change their names to Indonesian-sounding names. It is common for Indonesian galleries to work with multinational corporations to support their activities. For instance, a number of gallerists run tobacco businesses or cooperate with joint venture companies to organise arts events. Some gallerists even have their own foundations, such as the Langgeng Art Foundation in Yogyakarta, established by Deddy Irianto, or the museum and gallery space Art:1 of gallerist Martha Gunawan, which was inaugurated last October in Jakarta. Also relevant to the creation of an arts community in Indonesia are art spaces started by artists, such as Selasar Sunaryo Art Space by Sunaryo in Bandung and Sangkring Art Space by Putu Sutawijaya in Yogyakarta. Another branch of the artistic structure in Indonesia is the collectors. Dr. Oei Hong Djien, a tobacco entrepreneur and avid collector, is the owner of the OHD Museum in the city of Magelang, which provides the public with free access to an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art. In the absence of publicly-funded arts organisations, many Indonesian curators work for galleries. As a result, most gallery exhibitions are very well curated, and, many curators in Indonesia tend to be attuned to the art market. Notable exceptions are curators who write scholarly texts focused solely on fostering art discourse, such as senior curator Hendro Wiyanto, and young curators such as Enin Supriyanto, Agung Hujatnikajennong and Aminuddin TH Siregar. In recent years, many Indonesian galleries have participated in major Asian art fairs in cities such as Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. These fairs expose the Indonesian artists to a wider collecting base and bring their ideas to a broader platform. Concurrently in the last decade, Indonesian art has found a receptive audience with the young, urban elite of the country. In this context, commercial galleries have expanded to shopping malls, such as the Jakarta Art District in the Grand Indonesia Mall, furthering the commodification of contemporary art. This newer generation of collectors are also ~8~ ~9~ interested in video and new media artworks, whereas generations past were interested mostly in painting. The Internet, social media networks such as YouTube and blogs are also credited with exposing Indonesian artists to a more international and immediate audience, and in turn expose these artists to a more global culture. While in the 1990s it was the artists and their art spaces that dictated the direction of Indonesian contemporary art, in recent years a growing international audience and a complex commercial system have shaped and developed the arts scene to a profound new level. In 2011, the interest in Indonesian art reverberated beyond the Asia Pacific to various parts of the West, with the acclaimed exhibitions Trans-Figurations: Indonesian Mythologies at Le Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton in Paris, The Indonesian Eye at Saatchi in London, and Beyond the East at MACRO in Rome. The future of contemporary Indonesian art is boundless and exciting, fuelled by inspired and bold artists; supportive global institutions, curators and galleries; and a voracious and engaged collector and arts community.
