APPENDIX 11: AGGREGATED COST ESTIMATES
AGGREGATED COST ESTIMATE FOR POLDERS
On the basis of the detailed unit costs presented in annex 1, global costs have been computed. These
aggregated costs, which are of much easier use for the present study than detailed costs, are:
Embankment cost
Weir cost
Outlet cost
Polder embankment aggregated cost
The calculation of the embankment aggregated cost is based on the following assumptions, considering that
the height of the embankment may vary:
Crest width : 5 m
Slopes : 3 / 1
Top soil depth : 0,3 m
Wire mesh barrier against diging animals
Gravel track for inspection and maintenance on top of crest
Provision for some bad soil foundation removal and replacement
Provision for miscellaneous 15% : way crossings, drainage outlets, etc.
General costs 10%: installations, execution studies, etc.
The following table gives the aggregated cost per meter cube of earthfill, with regards to the height of the
embankment.

of the embankment may vary:

The calculation of the outlet aggregated cost is based on the following assumptions, considering that the
height of the embankment may vary, as well as the number of gated sluices according to the needs:
Crest width of embankment : 5 m
Slopes of embankment : 3 / 1
Outlet made of concrete culvert, with at least two sluices

AGGREGATED COST ESTIMATE FOR PROTECTION EMBANKMENT
Protection embankments are more exposed to flow velocity than the polder embankments (except for the
polder embankments settled along the stream banks).
The calculation of the protection embankment aggregated cost is based on the following assumptions,
considering that the height of the embankment may vary:
Crest width : 4 m
