Let's see what changes by taking a closer look at the second of the list, the one with a average length by Gianluigi Guiotto T he development of the first knife by Fällkniven started in 1987, when the founder Peter Hjortberger received a request for a survival blade for the Swedish Air Force by the Swedish defence materiel administration (FMV). After deep research, Hjortberger concluded that the knife, though destined to highly qualified personnel of the Special Forces, would have ended at the bottom of their priorities due to the new ways the modern warfare is carried out. Such simple conclusion brought to a "minimal" restyling of the combat and survival knife and to the creation of the F1. Eventually, a large but not too long blade - yet made of high quality steel - pointy enough with a robust handle - and a good grip to deal with the cold and humid climate of Scandinavia, was enough. The first models used the ATS34 steel, used also on the Boeing turbines, very similar to the VG10 used to today. The first 2000 samples for the Air Force were produced by Linder Cutlery in Solingen and delivered in August 1995. In the Spring of 1996, the F1 were launched also in the civilian market, with an immediate success. In the years 1996-1997 almost 15 thousands were sold around the world. A d e t a i l o f t h e g u a rd i n t h e P RO version, made of stainless steel, and of the gripping pattern of the handle The Fällkniven S1 Pro is sold in a robust ABS case with a sheath and a DC4 stone 3 ON DISPLAY The ending part of the tang, that is not hidden, acts also as glass-crusher And, exactly in 1997, the collaboration with Linder Cutlery, that started out the production of the F1, ended. From then on, the production of the knives moves in Seki, the Japanese version of Solingen, and the ATS34 is replaced with the VG10. In 2000, Fällkniven decided to start using the laminated VG10, which is more resilient, thus increasing the flexibility of more than 20%: a fundamental characteristic for a survival blade that has to bend without breaking or remaining bent. And while in 1999 Fällkniven became the official supplier of the Royal Court of Swede, it was accumulating success around the world. In 2000,F1,S1 and A1 were tested by the Naval Air Warfare Center at Patuxent River, in Maryland: the F1 and the S1 were adopted by the navy (the A1, though gaining the highest scores on all tests, hasn't been included because it was too bulky for a survival equipment). Since today, more than 100 thousand F1 has been sold and the Swedish company has representatives in more than di 40 countries, though remaining a family company that produces in a wooden hundred-years-old building in Boden, in the northern part of Sweden.Today, the series acknowledges a further evolution with the Pro version of all three knives, the result of a five-years research (the project started in 2010). Many are the improvements that have been introduced to satisfy a professional clientèle. First of all, the laminated VG10 has been replaced by a Cobalt-laminated steel, tempered to 60 Hrc that ensures better cutting qualities and a longer ability to remain sharp. The blade thickness has been increased too - from 5 to 6 mm for the S1 - thus increasing the rotational stiffness, and now it carries a new convex beveling. Moreover, the conical tang is larger and thicker and therefore more robust, whereas the quillon is now made of stainless steel and definitively secured to the tang. The Zytel sheaths have been re-designed to be more resistant and M.O.L.L.E.-ready. And also the packaging has changed. The S1 has been delivered to us in a ABS-waterresistant case. Inside, you'll find in a black leather pouch a DC4 stone for sharpening made of a layer of diamond stone and one of ceramic. Overall, the S1 Pro maintains the great balance (the barycenter shifts of 0.5 cm from the quillon) and the robustness of its less refined relative. Its peculiarity relies on the added safety against accidental openings, When closed, the safety protrudes a little behind the FAST and SAFE Should we be looking for the fastest opening, a servo-assisted folder with a flipper can certainly the answer. But it will be safe to carry in the pocket, or we may incur in accidental opening? The answer depends on the user. Let's see how the Buck has manged to satisfy everyone with its Inertia by Giorgio Alessandri 1 1. Even if it has a lean design and it is completely made of metal, the Buck is able to instill interest, thanks to the aggressive finishing on the scales, that also is perfect to cover the signs of use flipper, when open, it disappears in the handle, so not to bother the hand. When we want to make it appear again, it's enough to unlock the liner and close the blade, without finding yourself using your nails i n way s we d o n ' t eve n wa n t t o imagine. 2 2. When closed, the servo-assisted Buck is easy to carr y around, thanks to the contained and consistent thickness. The oblique fastening of the clip makes it suitable to be carried in every kind of pocket The principle is self-explanator y already at its first use: to disengage the safety you just need to make s o m e p r e s s u r e w i t h t h e i n d ex f i n g e r, j u s t l i ke w e w o u l d d o with a flipper when opening the blade. To avoid sudden changes in positions, in the left liner there is small metallic ball that creates resistance. Aside the unseen safety, the servoassisted flipper does not present differences with other similar s y s t e m s . O n c e yo u p r e s s t h e protr uding attachment and the opening motion begins, a spring will take care to complete it. No news even on the lock, as this is a liner-lock. The handle if the I n e r t i a i s m a d e o f t wo 6 0 6 1 T 6 a l u m i nu m s c a l e s , a n o d i z e d i n black that went then through an aggressive process of superficial treatment, reason of the worn out look. This par ticular finishing, aside making the Inertia more attractive, it egregiously masks the various s i g n s t h e a n o d i z e d a l u m i nu m unavoidably collects with a daily use. The back spacer is an exception, and keeps an untouched a n o d i z at i o n . Th e k n i f e c a n b e disassembled, but the peculiar pivot screw complicates things, probably this is meant to avoid that an inexperienced user may compromise the spring functioning. The handle is comfor table and stable, thanks to the rectangular section of the handle and to the patter ns on the scales, well conformed to avoid that the hand to move back too much. 6 FOLDER collaboration with Paul Bos, with the aim of having a robust and ke e n bl a d e, r u s t - re s i s t a n t a n d easy to sharpen. The hardness reaches the usual 58 Rockwell C degrees. The d e s i g n o f t h e bl a d e i s s i m p l e : a drop point with a sufficiently l owe r e d t i p a n d b e ve l s u p t o almost half of the hight, and concave to enhance the cutting performances. It has been embellished with a swe d g e a n d h o l d s j u s t o n e indentation for the thumb to open the blade, should you prefer to avoid the flipper. Our advice is not to use this way to open it, as you will be forced to a less firm grasp on the knife while the spring is opening the blade. The liner-lock system penalizes 4. It’s enough to move back the safety with the index to have the knife ready to open at our command. Once the blade is in position, the safety will disappear in the handle, and it won’t bother the hand 4 3 3. Here is the safety of the flipper when the in action. In this situation, even by pressing on the lever, the knife won’t open , making it safer in your pockets Only those with big hands may risk to remain unsatisfied, as the space for the finger s is not that wide. The blade is in Aisi 420HC, meaning the best among the 420, at least from a cutting point of view. It may seem a toned-down choice, but we will never get tired to say that the thermal treatment counts more than the alloy used. The producer specifies that he chose the 420HC as a standard steel for its knives, even if other more renown steel are also used, as the resistance to the wear off is almost identical to the carbon o n e, b u t o f f e r s a n ox i d a t i o n resistance equal to a chromium steel. To r e a c h t h e b e s t c u t t i n g performances, the Buck re l i e s o n a c a re f u l t e m p e r i n g process, perfected through the 7 ® FOLDER Knives Telling the Future METAMORPHOSIS HEAT SENSITIVE HANDLE Liner lock with flipper, Sleipner steel blade, steel liners. Normally the handle is black but as soon as the temperature reach 22-23 °C the handle changes the colour! Unfortunately, Buck has chosen to use a pivot screw that is difficult to be taken apart, as it requires a specific key, or at the very least some inventive.
