From the early settlers, to the Jekyll Island Club members, to the thousands of guests who arrive today, this Island is a retreat of history and wonder. With miles of beach, marsh, and maritime forest, Jekyll Island is a haven of discovery. Around every corner, a new adventure awaits. This publication is here to serve as your personal guide to experiencing this special Island. Jekyll Island has something for everyone, and in this portable digest we detail all the points of interest - from activities and events to shopping and dining, and everything in between. Schedule a tour at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, book a tennis court or tee time, stroll through a piece of American history, or hit the beach and do nothing at all. Whatever you need, we have it. We hope you enjoy Jekyll Island and come back again and again to explore and experience everything it has to offer. STAY SAFE To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all who visit Jekyll Island, please adhere to the following measures. Should 911 be required, please inform the dispatcher that you are on Jekyll Island. Barrier Island signals tend to drift and 911 calls may be answered in Glynn or Camden counties. • In case of an emergency, location is vital to emergency responders. Take note of your surroundings and location. Beach crossovers are numbered for your safety. • Use caution on sandbars as they can be covered by as much as 10’ • Golf carts must have, but are not limited to having: braking system, reflectors, horn, review mirror, seatbelts and hand holds for each passenger. • No golf carts on bike paths. • Bikes should be ridden on the bike paths. • Bike helmets are required for riders age 16 & younger. • No vehicles on the beach. • ATVs are not allowed anywhere per * Georgia State Law. The parking fee for entry to Jekyll Island is used to support conservation and stewardship of the natural and cultural resources of the Island. Special projects funded by the parking fee include beach crossovers, bicycle path extensions, and picnic area improvements. Great Dunes: This 20-acre beachfront park has several picnic pavilions, a deck for activities, play areas for children, bocce ball and volleyball courts, and public beach access with restrooms and showers. Driftwood Beach: On the north end of the island, this is consistently voted one of America’s “Ten Most Romantic Beaches” and has been featured by USA TODAY as one of the best southern beaches for a weekend escape. Glory Beach: See where portions of the Civil War movie, “Glory” were filmed on Jekyll Island. Glory Boardwalk is located next to the soccer complex toward the south. South Dunes: With elevated boardwalk beach access and access to over 20-foot high dunes, this park offers picnic tables and grills, open-air and screened-in picnic pavilions, public restrooms, dog bag stations, an observation deck, and a freshwater pond. St. Andrews: This beach is a short walk from Jekyll Point, the southern-most point in the island. Rolling waves, pristine sand dunes, leaping dolphins are common sights at this oceanfront picnic area, which is also popular for birding and shelling. The picnic area also features a two-story wildlife viewing platform and the Wanderer historical marker. BEACH GEMS J ekyll Island’s 10 miles of unspoiled beaches are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or for leisurely walks or invigorating jogs. Perhaps best known for their natural bounty, Jekyll Island’s beaches also offer shell collecting for guests, young and old. Many live creatures abound as well, including hermit crabs and sand dollars. November to December Holidays in History During the weeks of the holiday season, the Historic Landmark District is transformed back in time to the Christmas of the club era. The season begins with the Christmas Tree Lighting Festival the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and continues with storytelling, caroling, crafts, and more. When alligators are fed, they lose their natural fear of humans. • BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS: Always be aware of alligators when you are anywhere near fresh or brackish water. Never intentionally approach or try to capture an alligator, no matter what size. • DO NOT ALLOW CHILDREN TO PLAY IN WATER INHABITED BY ALLIGATORS: Always keep children a safe distance from the water’s edge, and never allow them to throw objects into the water. To an alligator, a splash potentially means a food source is in the water. • DO NOT ALLOW PETS IN OR NEAR WATER KNOWN TO HARBOR ALLIGATORS: Dogs and other small pets are more likely to be attacked than humans because they resemble natural prey. Please keep all dogs leashed and do not allow them to swim, drink, or play at the water’s edge. • PLAY IT SAFE WHEN GOLFING: Never search for a lost golf ball in the water or on the bank. Of course, never try to hit a ball that has come to rest near an alligator. Participants depart to the beach on all-terrain vehicles, then provide field assistance in order to gain hands-on experience in spotting sea turtle crawls, taking measurements of sea turtles and their habitat, and marking the egg chamber appropriately. Horton House Historic Site (North Riverview Drive) William Horton built this home in 1743 after a Spanish attack destroyed his original home. Through eight interpretive panels, you can discover the site’s other occupants including Native Americans, French privateers, and African Americans. • Cost: Free. The Wanderer Memorial (St. Andrew’s Picnic Area) The memorial commemorates survivors of the voyage of slave ship Wanderer and was the landing spot of one of the last known groups of enslaved Africans sold nearly 50 years after the importation of slaves was outlawed.
