The Capital Campaign for Kinkaid’s Future Volume 1, Issue l November, 2011 Kinkaid Introduces Tomorrow’s Promise Sneak Peek Event Draws Raves KINKAID TOMORROW The Kinkaid School 201 Kinkaid School Crive Houston, Texas 77024 what our campus can be NON PORFIT ORG. U.S POSTAGE PAID HOUSTON, TEXAS Permit No. 3375 The land, which totals more than 24.6 acres, will eventually increase our campus by more than 60% . For a school in a large metropolitan community, especially in the 4th largest city in the country, to expand its campus by more than 60% on contiguous property is truly remarkable. The capital campaign, Tomorrow’s Promise, is a multiphased, multi-year effort to raise funds to support the immediate and long range needs of the School. The goal for the first phase of the campaign is $ 25 million. The funds from the first phase of Tomorrow’s Promise will pay for the new land and immediate changes to our campus – including changes to the campus entrance, as well as a new parking lot, increased green space and an expanded Backyard for all grade levels. Planning for the future of our enlarged campus will take several years. Early ideas include building a new upper school, new cafeteria, long distance learning labs, additional athletic practice fields, a multi-level parking facility, innovative outdoor learning spaces with an environmentally sustainable classroom and an outdoor amphitheatre. San Felipe On Sunday, October 23rd, Kinkaid publicly launched Phase 1 of Tomorrow’s Promise, a capital campaign that will ensure Kinkaid’s position as one of the preeminent independent schools in the Southwest and the United States long into the future. The funds from Phase 1 of Tomorrow’s Promise will pay for the purchase of 24.6 acres contiguous to Kinkaid’s previous western boundary and several additional improvements (the new widened entrance to the School, for example). Nearly 500 parents, faculty and staff, and alumni showed up to take a tour of the southern part of the new property, to hear a short presentation about the land and the campaign, and to view an inspiring video about the purchase and the possibilities for the future. “Awesome,” “thrilling, “it blew me away,” and “I am so proud to be a part of this school community” were some of the words and phrases I heard from attendees after they finished the tour. One Kinkaid alumnus said that all throughout his years at Kinkaid he wondered what was “on the other side of the fence,” and it was so exciting to see the new land and to gain an understanding of what this acquisition will do for Kinkaid. This is truly transformative for our school. I am deeply grateful to the leaders of this campaign: Chair of the Board of Trustees Tom Simmons; Honorary Campaign Co-Chair Berdon Lawrence, who is the parent of a Kinkaid alumnus, the grandparent of current Kinkaidians, and a Kinkaid trustee; Honorary Campaign Co-Chair Corby Robertson Jr., the father of three Kinkaid alumni, grandparent of current Kinkaidians, and a Kinkaid trustee; Joe Hafner, parent of a Kinkaid alumna and a Kinkaid trustee; and Chair of the Campaign Tad Mayfield, who is an alumnus, the parent of an alumnus and a current Kinkaidian, and Vice-Chair of the Kinkaid Board of Trustees. Their leadership, advocacy, and generous support of the School in this endeavor represent significant and long lasting gifts to Kinkaid. This is an enormously exciting time for Kinkaid. Tomorrow’s Promise— these words convey the bright future of our students, the extraordinary opportunities for educational enrichment that this acquisition provides the School, and the commitment that we hope our entire community will make to creating this bright future.
