1 INFORMATION ON THIS MANUAL
This manual contains instructions on how to install the Ilumen PID Box and the Ilumen PID
Control Box.
1.1 VALIDITY
This manual is valid for Ilumen PID Box v1.0 and Ilumen PID Control Box v1.0
1.2 TARGET GROUP
This manual is intended for skilled persons. Only qualified persons with the appropriate skills
are allowed to perform the tasks set forth in this manual.

2 SAFETY
2.1 APPROPRIATE USAGE
The Ilumen PID Solution applies a voltage to PV modules in reference to earth. The Solution may
only be switched on when the installation is completed as described in this manual.
Before installing the Ilumen PID Solution, ensure that the permitted operating range of each
component is maintained at all times.
Before using the Ilumen PID Solution you have to obtain the appropriate approval from the
manufacturer of the PV modules.
Any applications other than those described here shall be considered contrary to the
appropriate usage. Alternative use or modification of the Ilumen PID Solution will void warranty
claims and operation permit.
2.2 QUALIFICATIONS OF SKILLED PERSONS
The work described in this document must be performed by skilled persons only. Skilled
persons must have the following qualifications:



Knowledge of how an inverter works and is operated
Training in how to deal with the dangers and risks involved in installing and operating
electrical devices and plants
Training in the installation and commissioning of electrical devices and plants

Knowledge of all applicable standards and directives

2.3 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
2.3.1 ELECTRIC SHOCK
When the Ilumen PID Solution is in operation, voltage will be present. Prior to maintenance
work on the PV plant switch off the Ilumen PID Control Box.
When you want to change the arrangement of the Ilumen PID Solution or want to add new PID
boxes you must switch off the Ilumen PID Control box 20 minutes prior to making any changes.
2.3.2 ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE
Never operate the Ilumen PID Solution when not properly installed or when the components are
not closed properly. Always make sure the grounding of the Ilumen PID Control Box is done
correctly.

4 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
4.1 ILUMEN PID CONTROL BOX
The Ilumen PID Control Box is connected with all the Ilumen PID Boxes in series When the
Ilumen PID Control Box is actively curing, the Ilumen sign is lit up. The curative periods of the
solution will depend on the extend of the PID problem. When no PID is present in the installation
the Ilumen PID Control Box will retain from curing. . Through GPRS communication the Ilumen
PID Solutionis switched on or off automatically. Through the my.ilumen.be portal you can check
if the Ilumen PID Control Box is operating correctly.You must mail the installations geographic
location to info@ilumen.be together with the Ilumen PID Control Box serial number to get your
login details and activation. The Ilumen PID Control Box may never be moved to another
geographic location before approval of Ilumen.

4.2 ILUMEN PID BOX
The Ilumen PID Box is placed between the inverter and the solar array strings. The power of the
strings goes through the PID Box, entering on one side and leaving on the other.One Ilumen PID
Box can only be used for one MPP tracker. If you use multiple Ilumen PID Boxes you must couple
them together in series with the 4-pole connectors. Always terminate the last Ilumen PID Box 4pole connector in a non-conductive and weather resistant manner. The number of working
Ilumen PID Boxes can optionally be monitored through the Ilumen portal.
Attention:
If you work with inverters with multiple MPPT’s you cannot mix the PV arrays from
multiple MPPT’s.
Attention:
The maximum current that can pass through the Ilumen PID Box is 34A. Make sure this is
never exceeded.
Attention:
Make sure the PV arrays are connected to the “in” side of the Ilumen PID Box Mini, NEVER
to the “out”side.
5 MOUNTING
5.1 MOUNTING LOCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THEILUMEN PID CONTROL BOX






The installation site must be freely and safely accessible at all times without the
necessity for any auxiliary equipment.
The mounting location should be inside a rain- and windproof location.
Do not place in a dusty environment.
The mounting location should be maximum 50 meters from the first Ilumen PID Box.
The ambient temperature must be between -25 and 60°C.
The mounting surface must be even. The wall brackets of the Ilumen PID Control Box
must lie flush with the mounting surface.
5.2 MOUNTING LOCATION REQUIREMENT FOR THE ILUMEN PID BOX




It can be installed outside
Proper ventilation of the product is necessary.
The ambient temperature must be between -25 and 60°C.
The possibility to mount with screws has been foreseen but isn’t necessary

5.3 MOUNTING THE ILUMEN PID SOLUTION
5.3.1 THE ILUMEN PID CONTROL BOX

If you choose to mount the Ilumen PID Box you should follow this procedure:

6 ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
When installing the Ilumen PID Solution, the AC side of the PV plant must be switched off. Also
the DC switch of the inverter must be switched off. After the installation is done, you can switch
the DC switch back on followed by the AC side of the PV plant.
A standard EU outlet must be available on installation. This outlet should be on at all times. The
ideal solution is to have a single outlet with a single circuit breaker of 16A.
6.1 AC CONNECTION
To power the Ilumen PID Solution you must connect the Ilumen PID Control Box to the AC grid
with the supplied power cord. Make sure the switch of the Ilumen PID Control Box is off before
connecting both sides of the cord. Don’t switch on the device until commissioning.
6.2 EARTH CONNECTION
To receive the best result the frames of the solar modules must be connected to the earth
connector of the Ilumen PID Control Box. For optimal result you must lay a solar cable (6mm2)
to the mounting structure of the solar modules (make sure mounting structures and frames of
the solar modules are electrically conducting). It is important that all frames of all solar modules

are at the earth potential, if necessary you have to interconnect the mounting structures with
additional cables.
6.3 ILUMEN PID CONTROL BOX TO ILUMEN PID BOX CONNECTION
To connect the Ilumen PID Control Box to the first Ilumen PID Box the cables with 4pole
connectors are used. You can use an extension cable (max 50m) in between made out of a four
wire cable of 4x1.5mm² and a!!!!!!!!!!!!!! female connector on one side and male connector on the
other side. The cable must be approved for outside use. Make sure the connectors are connected
correctly and screwed together tightly.

6.4 SOLAR ARRAY AND INVERTER (MPPT) TO ILUMEN PID BOX CONNECTIONS
When installing the Ilumen PID Solution between the PV array and inverter always switch off the
DC switch of the inverter.
TheIlumen PID Box side marked with “+” and “–“ will be connected to the inverter, the side
marked with “PV+” and “PV-“ will be connected to the solar arrays. If all connectors are installed
properly you can start connecting the PV arrays.
Always connect the PV arrays to the Ilumen PID Solution first; On the Ilumen PID BOX the “PV+”
cables should be connected to the positive side of all strings and the “PV-“ cables should be
connected to the negative side of all strings. Next connect the inverter. Connect the “+” cables of
the Ilumen PID Box to the positive input of the inverter (both cables MUST connect to the same
MPPT input). Connect the “-“ cables of the Ilumen PID Box to the negative input of the inverter
(both cables MUST connect to the same MPPT input).
All unused DC inputs and outputs have to be terminated with a corresponding sealing plug.

Attention:
If you work with inverters with multiple MPPT’s, you cannot mix the PV arrays from
multiple MPPT’s. Standard rule throughout the installation is one Ilumen PID Box for each
MPPT.
Attention:
The maximum current that can passthrough the Ilumen PID Box is 34A. Make sure this is
never exceeded.
Attention:
Make sure the PV arrays are connected to the “PV+” and “PV-“ cables of the Ilumen PID
Box, NEVER to the “+” or “-“ cables.
6.5 ILUMEN PID BOX SERIES CONNECTION
Connect the 4-pole male connector of the first Ilumen PID Box to the 4-pole female connector of
the Ilumen PID Control Box. Following you can connect up to 100 Ilumen PID Boxes in total in a
series chain by mating each 4-pole female connector from the last chained to the 4-pole male
connector of the one your adding. The end of the chain must be sealed by you in a nonconductive and weather resistant manner (e.g. by a terminator plug). Make sure the connections
are screwed properly and tightly to insure the connection and the weather resistance.
7 COMMISSIONING
7.1 CHECK
Do a final check whether everything is properly mounted and connected (see 5 and 6 for
details):





The PV frames are all connected to the same earth as the earth connection of the Ilumen
PID Control Box
Ilumen PID Control Box is fixed firmly against the wall
Ilumen PID Control Box GPRS antenna is placed in a good wireless connectable position
AC cable is correctly connected
PV and inverter DC cables are correctly connected

Unused DC inputs and outputs on the Ilumen PID Box are terminated with a
corresponding sealing plug
The Ilumen PID Boxes are correctly connected to the Ilumen PID Control Box
The final Ilumen PID Box is sealed in a non-conductive and weather resistant manner
If all these conditions are met you can start up the Ilumen PID Solution.
7.2 STARTING UP THE ILUMEN PID SOLUTION
The Ilumen PID Control Box can only apply the Ilumen PID Solution in an automatic mode. It
must be connected to the my.ilumen.be portal via the GPRS at any time. To start up the Ilumen
PID Box, plug in the AC power cord into a standard EU outlet (This outlet must be on at all times)
and turn on the switch. Next you need to login to the my.ilumen.be portal to see if the connection
is good and to finalize the installation. After approving the system it will be switched on
automatically.
Mail geographic location to info@ilumen.be together with the Ilumen PID Control Box serial
number to get your login details and activation. The Ilumen PID Control Box may never be
moved to another geographic location before approval of Ilumen.
8 INSTALLATION SUMMARY
1) Take the necessary safety precautions (AC side of the PV plant off and DC switch of the
inverter off).
2) Mount the Ilumen PID Control Box.
3) Make the AC power connection to the Ilumen PID Control Box with the power button
turned off.
4) Connect the Ilumen PID Control Box and the PV frames to earth and make sure all PV
frames are interconnected.
5) The Ilumen PID Box can be mounted.
6) Disconnect the PV array cables from the inverter.
7) Connect the PV array cables to the Ilumen PID Box (see 6.4 for details).
8) Connect the Ilumen PID Box to the inverter (see 6.4 for details).
9) Connect the Ilumen PID Box(es) in a series chain to the Ilumen PID Control Box.
10) Flip on the power switch of the Ilumen PID Control Box.

11) Turn the DC switch from the inverter back on followed by the AC side of the PV plant.
12) Register on my.ilumen.be.
You must mail the installations geographic location to info@ilumen.be together
with the Ilumen PID Control Box serial number to get your login details and

geographic location before approval of Ilumen.

9 DECOMMISSIONING THE ILUMEN PID SOLUTION
Switch off the Ilumen PID Control Box. Disconnect the Ilumen PID Control Box from the AC grid.
Wait for minimum 20 minutes. Make sure the AC cannot be plugged in again. Disconnect the DC
switch from the inverter and wait until it is discharged. Disconnect the Ilumen PID Box
communication line first. Disconnect all DC connectors going to the PV arrays and then
disconnect the lines going to the inverter. When all electrical connections are disconnected you
can dismount the Ilumen PID Boxes and the Ilumen PID Control Box.
The Ilumen PID Control Box may never be moved to another geographic location before
approval of Ilumen.
10 TROUBLESHOOTING
10.1 NO GPRS CONNECTION
In case of a bad connection with the my.ilumen.be portal you should check following things:






Is the Ilumen PID Control Box properly connected to the AC grid?
Is the power button of the Ilumen PID Control Box switched on?
Has the location of the Ilumen PID Control Box a good GPRS connection (at least 2G GSM
reception)?
Try to install it on a position with better GPRS connection?
Try to mount the antenna for an optimal connection?
Are there any appliances in the neighborhood that can disturb the signal?
10.2 NO GOOD PID REGENERATION
If the modules are not regenerating or not regenerating fast enough you should check following
things:






Is the Ilumen PID Control Box is properly connected to the AC grid?
Is the power button of the Ilumen PID Control Box switched on?
Are the Ilumen PID Boxes connected correctly?
Is the communication cable connected correctly?
Let an expert check that the problem you have with the yield is caused by PID?
Control the grounding of the system if necessary you should place additional
interconnections.
