AUGUST 2016
Supply Drive @ the Library - August 2016. Going back to school shopping for the children? Finding great deals and want to
support your library? Consider donating to our 2016 Supply Drive! These materials will be used at the library. We go through
hundreds of glue sticks and markers each year at storytime. At our public information and reference desks, our supplies of
tissues and hand sanitizer and sticky notes get depleted quickly. Below is a list of items that would be helpful to your West Bend
Library! We appreciate your continued support.
Library Carpeting and Furniture Project to Start August 29th: Pardon our dust! The West Bend Library will be receiving new
carpeting and furniture in the coming months. The new carpeting installation in the library public areas will begin August 29th
and continue into early October. Carpeting will be installed first on the Second Floor and then down on the Main Floor. More
information on the plans for the Library Carpeting and Furniture Project can be found near the reference desk on the second
floor. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.
West Bend Library Walkers - Each Thursday in August @ 9:30 AM. Meet each week on Thursdays for a 35-45 minute walk
around the library neighborhood and downtown area. Talking while we walk is welcome! The goal is to get out to enjoy weather
and also get some exercise! We will be walking at a moderate to brisk pace, so walk at your own risk. All adults are welcome,
from moms with strollers to seniors with sneakers! In case of hot or rainy weather, we will cancel the walk for the week. For more
information, contact Sara at 262-335-5151, ext. 5259.
National Coloring Day - Tuesday, August 2. You have probably heard that adult coloring is everywhere these days. Did you
know that National Coloring day is Tuesday, August 2? We will be displaying the coloring art of a group of adult colorers from
Meadowbrook Manor called the Shady Ladies. Come see their work at the library August 1 - August 5 and also enter in for a
drawing! Also, we will have coloring sheets that you can take with you to celebrate National Coloring Day!
Stuffed Animal Sleepover - Thursday, August 4 @ 6:30 PM. We will give your stuffed animal a nametag, read some bedtime
stories, sing some songs, and then you will leave your stuffed animal overnight with us, and they will have a wild sleepover at
the library! (Only the stuffed animals sleep over, kids do not!) Come back the next day to claim your stuffed friend and see
photos of the fun the stuffed animals had while you were away!
Anime Manga Club - Tuesday, August 9 @ 4:30 PM. Open to students in grades 6-12, this is a monthly opportunity for teens to
interact with fellow anime and manga enthusiasts, watch anime, and discuss manga! Cosplay is always welcome. We will screen
two episodes from a different anime each month. Anime Manga Club is a free event!
Civil War: Captain America Movie - Tuesday, August 9 @ 6 PM. When the actions of the Avengers lead to collateral damage,
Captain America believes superheros should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. Iron Man supports
government oversight. As the debate escalates into an all-out feud, Black Widow and other superheros must pick a side. Bring
your own snacks! Rated PG-13, 2 hrs 27 min.
Edible Book Festival - Thursday, August 11 @ 5:30-7 PM. Pick up a registration form (attached here!) if you'd like to enter an
edible creation that is based off a book. You make your creation at home and bring it to the library to show it off and have your
creation be judged. Or just come and check out the cakes and edible creations and vote for your favorite! Print out the
registration form
here.

books we pick, but we also hang out. Sometimes there are snacks. Lots of our books are on college prep reading lists, so this is

book! For August we are discussing
Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis.

Impairment), early-stage Alzheimer's, or a related dementia can go with their care partners to socialize and have fun with other
people going through similar things. A Memory Café has no real agenda or stated purpose except to enjoy each other's company.
Cafés provide a time where you do not need to focus on he diagnosis while having a great time connecting with each other as a
family or creating new friendships. If it is your first time attending, please call Tammy Dickman at 262-335-4497. This program is
held the fourth Tuesday of each month and is held in conjunction with the
Alzheimer's Association and the ADRC of Washington
County.

Storytimes and Baby Storytime - We have several storytime sessions each week to choose from. Baby/Toddler Storytime
takes place on Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. and is for ages 0-24 months. Baby/Toddler Storytime is about 15 minutes of songs,
rhymes, and very short stories, and always ends with bubbles and playtime! Preschool storytime sessions usually last about 25
minutes and consist of stories, songs, and rhymes, and the children can stay after storytime for a craft. Preschool storytime
sessions take place on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at 10:00 am and Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. All storytime
sessions are drop-in and do not require advance registration. If you have questions, please contact Terika Koch at
tkoch@west-bendlibrary.org.
Growing West Bend Readers - We have 462 Children REGISTERED!
This free program encourages you to read 1000 books with your child before he or she enters
Kindergarten. This goal was set by experts who say children need to hear at least 1000 books to help
them learn to read for themselves.
One of the best ways to encourage learning is to spend time sharing books each and every day. Reading
together helps develop important pre-reading skills that provide a solid reading foundation — a key to
school success. Plus reading together is fun and a great way to bond and relax.
The program has no end date except for when your child starts school, so don’t feel rushed—just enjoy
the experience! Take every chance to read with your child. You will share many special moments along
the way.
Any child who has not yet started kindergarten can participate even beginning as young as infants. Visit a
librarian at the Children's Information Desk to register.
