The right detector, a brief guide
for people who are new to detecting
At Gold Search Australia we stock a good selection of detectors to cover a variety of different
uses. To get the best results it is important to buy the right detector to suit the job.
Detectors are broadly divided into 2 types, the first being VLF (Very Low Frequency) detectors
which White's have made since the early 1950's and the second being Pulse Induction which
have been around from the mid 1990's. Both have their pros and cons.
VLF Detectors
Pros (Thumbs Up)
- The Vast majority of VLF detectors have a display screen that provides information about the
target in the ground, this information is used to judge if the target is worth digging or not.
- VLF's have the ability to discriminate against ferrous objects and the better models can be set
up to ignore or accept a selected range of the targets, with a helpful variation in audio tone.
- Some high frequency VLF detectors will detect fine gold that is invisible to Pulse Induction
machines.
- VLF's are comparatively cheap and light in weight.
Cons (Thumbs Down)
- VLFs can often struggle to detect targets in highly mineralised ground, it can make them noisy
and reduce their detection depth.
- There is a limited number of search coils available for most VLF detectors.
Pulse Induction
Pros (Thumbs Up)
- Pulse Induction detectors also known as P.I detectors, can penetrate deeper into mineralised
grounds where gold is often found.
- There is a huge range of search coils available which could increase the amount of gold found.
Cons (thumbs Down)
- No display screen for information, only audio, so all targets should be dug.
- Discrimination on some brands is not reliable.
- P.I detectors prefer solid targets, very fine disseminated gold can be invisible to them
- They are more expensive, heavier and can be susceptible to electrical interference (EMI)
Suggestions
White's MXT PRO - 3 in 1 Detector: for travellers who seek a variety of detecting opportunities,
coins and relic hunting on beach or land and the ability to prospect for gold in areas where
mineralisation is not as heavy.
White's GMT Goldmaster: For chasing fine alluvial or small gold in reefs, riverbeds and
pipeclay, with the ability to ignore ferrous targets, can locate small gold that Pulse Induction
detectors can miss.
White's TDI Pro Oz-Series: A dedicated gold hunters detector, to run well on mineralised
beaches and in heavy mineralised grounds throughout the goldfields.
White's Sierra Pulse Pro: Handles areas that produce EMI (Electrical Magnetic Interference)
and runs smoother in mineralised grounds throughout the goldfields.

Left: Thirty-four ounces of gold found by
author and his mate around Dunolly.
By Mick
With my holidays fast approaching I
contacted one of my prospecting mates,
Rob and after some discussion we
decided to have a go at prospecting
some of the Golden Triangle areas in
Victoria. Since the gold rush days of the
1800s, this area has been well known for
producing some of the largest nuggets in
the world and with this in mind, we were
filled with excitement and high hopes
about what our trip might bring. It was
December 2008 and my holidays finally
arrived so Rob and I left Western Australia
in search of our share of Victorian gold.
Upon arriving in Dunolly and armed with our new Minelab 4500 GPX detectors, we agreed to head out into the
surrounding bushland just around Dunolly itself. The goldfields in Victoria are a lot different to what we were used
to in Western Australia but they look great none-the-less with diggings and mullock heaps every-where we looked.
Deciding to work the diggings before we did any real prospecting proved to be a good decision as we found a few
small nuggets up to around six grams total. Returning to our campsite late that afternoon we made plans for the
next day.
The following day the weather was changing for the worst and our new 4500s got increasingly noisy due to bad
atmospherics. This made things a little more difficult especially with any quiet, deep sounds, so we decided to
take a break from prospecting and have a look at the local museum where there are replica nuggets on display of
those that have been found on the surrounding goldfields. There was even an anvil where the largest nugget in
the world, the “Welcome Stranger”, was broken up into smaller pieces and later melted down.
Across the road we spotted the detector shop “Gold Search Australia”,
owned by Tony Mills, who we had dealt with previously by phone. We asked
Tony about different machines he had available which got us thinking about the
purpose and use of each model, such as looking for gold in highly mineralised
ground or discriminator machines for use in the, the junky areas. He also talked
about what he considered to be neglected gold, that is, gold found in old deep
lead mines, trashy/junky areas, as well as old camp sites. Rod and I thought
about this over a cuppa and then, after a lengthy discussion, we decided to buy
a White’s GMT and have a crack at some of this “forgotten gold”. Setting out
the next morning with new enthusiasm regarding what we might find, we soon
arrived at an old camp site a mate had previously told us about. Rob had his
Minelab 4500 and I was using the new White’s GMT.
The area had some deep lead dumps on it which were just full of rubbish so we figured that with any luck we might
come across some of this “forgotten gold”. It didn’t take me very long to understand the functions and operation
of the White’s GMT and after checking some of Rob’s targets with the built-in discriminator, I soon realised the
advantages of using this detector. After about half an hour and discriminating lots of rubbish targets, I came across
our first piece of forgotten gold weighing around half an ounce. I was rapt to say the least and when I showed it
to Rob he just about fell over. It was obvious the White’s GMT detector worked because more gold nuggets kept
coming out from amongst the rubbish. The feeling of finding gold so early into the trip was amazing and with each
piece found we gave our mate who put us onto the spot a quiet ‘thanks mate, we owe you one’. He drinks Bourbon
so it was going to be the best bottle we could lay our hands on as a way of thanks. You’d be a mongrel not to,
wouldn’t you? After a few days we had found plenty more gold with much of it fantastic looking specimens of gold
in quartz. We couldn’t believe our luck and even though at the time we weren’t exactly sure how much gold we’d
found, we knew it was ounces and not just grams.
Over the course of our two week holiday to the Dunolly goldfields we found a total of 34 ounces of gold including
plenty of small bits that were hard pressed to register a weight on the scales. We will still use our Minelab 4500s
for highly mineralised ground in the goldfields as they are great machines but the White’s GMT has definitely
found a full-time home in our prospecting kit, especially around the trashy areas.

It’s no secret that the Whites MXT has been around
for a few years now but in that time it has been a
bit of a sleeper in Australia. In the United States
however it has gained a pretty good reputation
as a gold getting VLF detector. Recently I had the
opportunity to discover first hand if it could live up to
its reputation in our gold hunting environments.
Much of the MXT’s prospecting mode is based upon
the highly successful Whites GMT platform with
the use of Fast Auto Track and the legendary V-Sat
control.
This control does an excellent job at smoothing out threshold fluctuations caused by rapidly changing ground
conditions in highly variable ground types. Hook this up with dedicated Coin and Relic modes and a Salt switch
and you have a highly versatile machine capable of covering almost any type of gold, coin or relic hunting
scenario. There are a number of coils available for this machine but for my first outing I chose the 5.3 inch Eclipse
concentric. This coil is actually touted as a coin hunting coil by Whites but after some initial testing and witnessing
its amazing sensitivity on small gold and specimens, I reckoned it would be a winner in some of my old hard-hit
areas.
First stop was an area in the middle of Maryborough, Victoria, near some old surface workings. Because of the
V-Sat control I was able to run the gain, or sensitivity, very high. The V-Sat controls how fast the threshold
recovers from fluctuations caused by the ground changing from positive to negative or vice versa balance.
To put it simply it greatly reduces noisy operation in bad ground.
This control is exclusive to Whites machines and has never been copied to date. With the careful selection of the
right V-Sat level you can obtain a much higher gain or sensitivity setting than would otherwise be useable without
it. In other words when you have to drop the sensitivity on another machine to a level where you lose a large
amount of depth and sensitivity due to too much ground noise, on a Whites machine that incorporates V-Sat you
can retain much of the operational power by simply upping the V-Sat level. The V-Sat range is 1 to 7 then it shifts
to ‘Hyper Sat’. Hyper Sat is for use in extremely bad ground and will flatten out threshold fluctuations dramatically
but still give you a crisp discernable target response. So here I was running 10 on the gain and 7 on the V-Sat.
The ground noises were almost non-existent, the threshold was as smooth as silk and within 5 minutes I had my
first MXT piece of gold. How big? Don’t laugh, but it was a whopping 1/15th of a gram! But I was rapt because it
was a nice buzzy little signal that popped in from an inch or so deep. Very close by was an old detector hole that
had quite possibly yielded a much bigger chunk of the good stuff. I had gone over this bit of dug ground with my
other detector on numerous occasions and to say I was surprised when I ran the MXT over it and got two distinct
signals would be an understatement. I remember looking down at the ground and thinking “no way, there can’t
be any more signals here”.
At this point I was really expecting them to be ground noise from some strange hot rock, as there were a few
in the area, but from two inches down the first one was out, 0.75 grams of gold in quartz, with the next being a
sunbaker that had half a gram of spongy gold attached. Being able to smoothly run a high gain setting, retaining
good sensitivity and virtually eliminating ground noise fluctuations were definitely the keys to finding these two
pieces.
The following week saw me at an old reef area. Id also hit pretty hard in the past. First off I ran the standard 9.5
inch concentric coil just to see how it fared on gold. It too ran nice and stable although the donut design
which is becoming so popular with coil manufacturers these days, I found to be a pain in the proverbial when
swung around this rocky environment.
It was forever getting caught up with rocks and
sticks and brought my swings to an abrupt halt
when it did. Before changing it over I did snag a
small specie with 0.2 grams inside. The verdict:
an excellent coil on coins and relics but a bit
clumsy for prospecting. Changing back to the 5.3
saw me a happy camper once again and very
soon picking up another small specimen of gold
in quartz. I half expected this piece, which was
30
lying right on the surface, to produce a mineral sound but it stayed rock solid in response after a couple of passes
with the coil. After a quick crack with the geo pick I was rewarded with another small bit of about 0.3 grams.
Often with the MXT, when you pass over a small bit of rusted iron or steel in Tracking, you will notice the response
diminishes or changes quite markedly after just two or three sweeps of the coil. Gold will stay rock solid 99% of
the time. Minerals in a rock will do the same and change after three or four sweeps but gold in the rock will stay
solid. Be careful though because the MXT has a very aggressive and highly effective tracking system. A few
sweeps would be the maximum due to this fact. Repeated passes of the coil over a target in tracking mode are
a definite no-no. The MXT also needs to “see” the ground and should never be air tested in Track. Hold a target
in the air with tracking on and you will see a marked reduction and/or alteration in signal strength as it tracks into
the target.
My next target was a very faint signal I almost missed. When I dug
it out from about two inches down I was initially disappointed to
see what appeared to be a bit of rusted iron. I say disappointed
because the MXT’s prospecting mode has the best iron ID system
I have seen or used on any VLF machine to date. Ok, so there I
was with this supposed bit of rusty iron but it read 15 on the VDI
display and registered only a 10% probability of being iron. What’s
more the audio grunt never so much as whimpered. I quickly broke
it into several pieces to reveal the culprit.
It was actually a piece of iron oxide full of fine gold – a very tricky piece indeed that could quite easily fool anyone
just giving it a once over with the naked eye. I ended up getting another six more small bits of gold here for just
over a gram and another small specie of gold in pyrites. Not a fortune in anyone’s books but for such a hard hit
place I was suitably impressed.
Next up I wanted to see how the 10 x 6 DD Eclipse coil handled the really bad ground so I went to a spot where
the gully had been gutted out leaving heaps of really reactive hot and cold rocks (rising or dropping threshold
sounds when passed over) as well as red clays and other typically noisy minerals. How did it go?
Occasionally there was a false call but compared to other manufacturer’s machines it was chalk and cheese and
a place you could happily work in. Honestly, many other VLF’s would have struggled to run a sensitivity setting
higher than just 50%.The MXT was doing it effectively at around 80%. Right on top of a small gravelly rock pile I
got a solid signal that read 10% on the Probability meter. After picking it up I was greeted with 0.7 grams of gold
in ironstone. This is a hard machine to fool.
I had really punished this spot with my previous machine, so much so
that I reckon the wildlife in the area, trees included, breathed a sigh of
relief when I finished up there a number of months back. Last up was
one of my favourite places, Crystal Hills.
Due to the MXT’s fantastic discrimination in Prospecting mode I
reckoned the best area to try was going to be amongst the rubbish
and the particular spot I chose was full of it. Again I reverted to the 5.3
Eclipse and chose the Plus range of the gain to see how sensitive it
really was running flat out. I must have passed the coil over a dozen
Iron or bad targets when one finally sung out nice and clear with a low
Iron Probability of 10%. It was a bit of quartz and it screamed.
One smack of the hammer and there was 1.5 grams of sparkly gold and
some pyrites twinkling back at me. The V-Sat control takes it to another
level altogether making it absolutely unique amongst VLF gold detectors.
The worst the ground gets, the more this feature becomes appreciated. And
the Iron ID system is top notch providing the operator with an impressive
array of options for indentifying targets amongst junk via an easy-to read
LCD display.
In my opinion its one of the best and most controllable VLF gold detectors
available today.

I don't think I'd win any prizes for
guessing that there are quite a few
people in the detecting fraternity
quietly wondering how the new
pulse induction machine from
White's Electronincs stacks up on
the Australian goldfields. Well, after
several weeks of testing, I have to
say that the TDI Pro Oz-Series is the
goods. It was taken to a variety of
places with varying ground types and
it passed with flying colours. In fact,
I was amazed to see that in one particular area I never had to adjust the manual ground balance once during
an entire day's detecting, and that includes upon start up. Of course some places did require the occasional
rebalance due to changing mineralisation and I encountered one very bad area that forced me to rebalance
every 10 - 15 minutes, but considering the overall preformance, this wasn't an issue. The areas where I tested
the machine are ones I'm very familiar with having trialled nemerous detectors on them over the years. I find
this provides a rock-solid platform on which to gauge a new detector's ability.
All Pulse Induction coils: The new White's TDI Pro Oz-series will accept all pulse induction search coils
made by Coiltek, Nugget Finder and Minelab and after trialling just a few of the various sizes and shapes
available, I settled on the Coiltek 14 x 9 elliptical mono for the purpose of these field tests. I found this a great
combination and the pinpointing of targets on the narrowed front end of the 14" Inch was exceptional.
As with any new machine there is always an unavoidable learning curve in getting accustomed to its particular
operating features and the White's TDI Pro Oz-series was no exception, That said, it's not a difficult machine
to come to grips with. The first trial was at Tarnagulla and the spot chosen is lousy with false signals caused
by numerous pockets of heavily mineralised and variable clays, many of which are of an opposing ground
balance type to the ironstone-riddled ground that surrounds them. To date they have been impossible to
completely tune out with any machine. I've used and I was keen to see how the White's TDI Pro Oz-series
fared under these conditions. Well, after the inital ground balance check and a minor adjustment I was off and
it imediately apparent that the Oz-series was a different beast to its predecessor. Not only was it running with
a much more stable audio but I was even able to increase the gain from level 5 which I'd used on the original
American TDI Pro months earlier, to a new high of 8.
Reduced level of sharpness: The clay pocket signals were still present but at a significantly reduced level
of sharpness. Gone were the full-on signal sounds previously encountered here, replaced by a more gentle
mineral sounding entry and exit signal. The odd one one still gave an occasional false alarm but the overall
reduction in false signal occurrence was about 80%. Unfortunately, I didn't snag myself any gold at this spot
but considering the difficulty of the ground and the flogging it's had, I was happy with the overall preformance
of the White's TDI Pro Oz-series. Next on the list was a spot at Moliagul where some surfacing had carried
out on very hot ground. I had purposely left the ground balance settings on the detector unchanged from the
Tarnagulla site because I wanted to see how different this Moliagul ground was. Polar opposite would be an
apt description with the TDI howling like a dingo gone mad when the coil approached the ground. Aquick
turn of the course then a bit of an adjustment of the fine ground balance control but boy did it show just how
different two similar looking areas can be. The ground at Moliagul was much hotter than the trial area at
Tarnagulla and the gain control had to be lowered to around 6 to obtain more stable running of the TDI. As
covered more ground I encountered some areas that forced me to make minor adjustments to the ground
balance evey 10 minutes or so. Obviously underfoot there were some significant mineral changes taking
place, highlighting just how bad the Victorian goldfields are and why machines that can cut it here can cut it
anywhere. Again I went unrewarded for my efforts but was pleased to see that the TDI comfortably held its
own in an area reowned as tough to hunt in.
Clean looking gold: The third trial area was near Amherst. I'd been here a number times over the years and
found some really nice, clean looking gold in yellowish orange clay so I was hoping to pull a piece or two with
the new TDI Pro Oz-series to prove it up. I decided to detect up the diggings a bit where the old boys had
dug out some of the gold-bearing clays and rocks and left piled up portions of the poorer stuff untested. Upon
start up I was suprised at just how quiet the ground was and I didn't need to adjust the ground balance at all.
I quickly detected my first target which turned out to be an old .22 slug that had probably been fired at one of
the many rabbits that plagued the area a number of years back
32
A short time later I got another signal that sounded the same and was expecting another slug be after I'd dug
out about four inches of clay and stone, the signal was coming from a couple of bits of mangy quartz and clay.
There was no bullet in sight so, I dropped the congiomeration onto the tip of the 14" Inch mono and as soon
as I moved a piece of the quartz, the Pro let out a squeal that was unmistakable, It didn't take much cleaning
to reveal a nice little specimen containing a good show of visible gold. The first gold find with the new machine
is always a real buzz but it got better because roughly five minutes later I had another bit, this time a clean bit
of gold weighing about one gram.
Stopped for a breather: I detected for another hour
without luck and was making my way back to the car
when I stopped for a breather and a drink near an old
tree stump. I noticed the dirt and clay the old roots had
pushed up looked similar to that which the old timers had
dug out so I swung the coil half-heartedly over some of
it and got a signal; soft and weak but definitely a signal.
I dug out about three inches of clay near one of the
exposed roots and scanned it. The signal was there nice
and clear and within seconds I had the gold in my hand.
When I again waved the coil over the same area I got another signal which turned out to be a nice 2 grammer,
In the end I finished up detecting an area five meters square radiating out from the stump and wound up with
seven more pieces of clean gold. None were big but the final weigh in was a healthy 11 grams. My final test
site was on a hillside not far from some old reef workings.
I'd been detecting for about 45 minutes when I got a faint signal from a large bit of flat quartz lying in plain
view I flipped it over but the signal still sounded the same. I'd left my geo hammer back in the car so I found
a solid lump of rock and pounded it down on the quartz with my sunglasses psuhed tightly into my face to
protect my eyes.
Fast flying bits of razor sharp quartz can inflict some serious damage. More than once over the years, I've
gone to wipe away what I tjought was sweat on my forehead after preforming the task, oly to be greeted with
the sight of my own claret smeared across the palm of my hand. Sometimes you don't even feel it.
Sparkly bit of gold: Anyway, the smash out was successful and inside of one of the quartz bits was a nice
sparkly bit of gold weighing about half a gram.
As I made my way further up the slope I came across a pile of rocks the old timers had placed there while
digging out what must have been a small costean. I waved the coil over it and there was an unmistakable
signal so I dug a few rocks out of the way and waved the coil back over the small excavation but the target
was out. When I then passed the coil over a lump of mineralised quartz it screamed ans I immediately got that
tingle of anticipation you get when you know you've found gold.
There were a few cracks in this bit so an easy whack with the side of the pick quickly split in open to reveal
some very nice looking rough gold inside some equally good looking mineralised quartz. Another pass of the
coil over the pile produced another signal and in no time I was holding some smaller and finer gold in the
same quartz type. There were just a couple of grams in each specimen but they were two absolutely beautiful
little keepers courtesy of the TDI pro Oz-series, I was very pleased indeed.
In summary the new White's TDI Pro Oz-series handles our Aussie ground well. The occasional area can be
challenging but no more so than with other machines.
Its learning curve is not as severe as some with
a week or two spent on the business end being
all it should take for the average person to get
a handle on things. The availability of a huge
coil range from various manufacturers is a real
bonus.
The TDI's lithium-Ion battery pack is housed in
the detector itself doing away with the need for
back packs and annoying power leads dangling
about and getting caught up and breaking.
And at just about $2,400 there shouldn't be too
many complaints in the price department.
