Iron Baluster Installation Before preceding with the following steps, the handrail height should already be determined. Read all the steps below before beginning installation. The balustrade centerline and newel centerpoints should be laid out. On an open-tread stair, the centerline should be 1/2 of the baluster square in from the face of the stringer; i.e.” 5/8” for a 1-1/4” baluster. Follow instructions for attaching newels and temporarily install handrail. Using a plum bob, line up with the holes in the treads and mark the handrail for the top of the baluster. Drill holes using 5/8" drill bit a minimum of 3/4" deep into handrail. Mark and Cut Here Trim and Install Balusters Using a metal tape measure, measure the distance from the front hole in the stair tread to the corresponding hole in the bottom of the handrail. Do this same procedure for the back hole in the stair tread. A Chop Saw with a diamond blade is the preferred way to cut the iron balusters. Take care when marking and cutting the balusters. Use proper safety precautions when doing this step. Take your time and use a slow firm downward pressure to keep from chipping the cutting disc. To each of these measurements add 1-1/2”. Example: A1 • If the newel starts from the floor or a Measure and Trim Balusters Mark baluster placement on treads allowing for equal spacing while following your original design. Make mark. Assemble the Handrail: 35” + 1/1/2” = 36 -1/2” This is your baluster height. Using the above measurement, we determine the amount to cut off the baluster to create the perfect height. By subtracting the desired height from the baluster height (44”) we get the measurement to cut off the bottom of the baluster. BACK Example: 44” - 36 -1/2” = 7-1/2” to cut FRONT Attach top and bottom shoes ( if used) before setting balusters in place. Iron balusters are installed first with epoxy* in the stair tread. Then epoxy is applied to the tops and the handrail is lowered down onto them. Secure handrail to newel posts. Also Available: Newels Using an allen wrench, secure each top shoe against the rail and each bottom shoe against the tread. *Household GOOP™ is a convenient epoxy for this project.
