Silent Pianos
The Yamaha Silent Piano lets you connect traditional tone,
touch and elegance to the world of digital electronics. Perfect
for those who need a real acoustic piano and also need to be
able to practice without disturbing others.
The Silent Piano is an acoustic piano with sound-damping
capabilities. When the silent function is not engaged, the
piano sounds and feels exactly as its non-silent counterpart.
However, when the silent function has been activated and a
key is struck, the hammer is stopped from striking the string.
Optical sensors capture every nuance of play and relay them
to a tone generator, which sends a sample of an acoustic
piano sound to the headphones.
There are two variations of the silent system: the Simple Type,
which is found on JU109, JX113, U1J and GB1K; and the SG
Type which is found on the YUS1. The Simple Type is, as the
name suggests, very simple to operate offering a high quality
reproduction of a grand piano sound played through the
headphones when the silent function is engaged. The SG Type
adds a range of additional sounds and features.
Simple Type
•Stereo samples from the Yamaha S6 premium grand piano
•2 headphone sockets
•Adjustable reverb level
SG Type
•Stereo samples from the Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand piano
•10 voices including harpsichord, pipe organ and strings
•Recording and playback function
•USB port to import MIDI files from USB memory device
•50 demo songs pre-installed
•2 headphone sockets
•Adjustable reverb level

Why Choose a New Yamaha Piano?
Although often a cheaper alternative, there are some key
factors to keep in mind when considering a new or
second-hand Yamaha piano.
Firstly, pianos are at their best when they are brand new. They
take a short while and several tunings to settle into their new
homes, but once they have settled they perform at their peak.
If treated well and serviced regularly, your new Yamaha piano
will last for generations, although the best period of its life will
be the first 10 to 20 years.
All new Yamaha pianos are ‘seasoned’ to the highest
standard during production, which is a process of reducing
moisture content in the woods used. Pianos with very low
moisture content are more able to withstand the varied
temperature and humidity in Australia.
Many second-hand Yamaha pianos offered for sale in Australia
are imported from Asia as used pianos. Most of these imported
pianos were not built for Australian conditions and, more
importantly, there is generally no way of knowing the history
of these pianos. A moderately-played piano that is serviced
regularly will perform very differently after 20 to 30 years from
a piano that has been played 8 hours a day in a music school
and not serviced regularly.
A Yamaha piano has over
5,500 fine parts
As you would approach buying a used car with very high
kilometres with caution, you should exercise the same caution
when considering a second-hand piano. A check of a piano serial
number will tell you when the piano was built. It is difficult to
determine how much use a piano has had as pianos rarely come
with a service history. The only way to ensure you are making a
worthwhile investment is to have an accredited Yamaha technician
perform a full inspection of the piano prior to purchasing.
You can call Yamaha Music Australia on 1800 805 413 to check the
age of a piano based on its serial number and to be referred to an
accredited Yamaha technician in your local area.
Some things you need to be aware of when buying a secondhand piano:
• No Yamaha warranty in most cases
• Older pianos may not include the latest Yamaha design features
• D
epending on age, genuine Yamaha spare parts may
not be available
• If poorly maintained, tuning stability may be affected
• W
oods not ‘seasoned’ for the Australian climate run a greater
risk of warping, cracking and loss of traction on tuning pins
A Yamaha piano has over 5,500 fine parts that all need
to be serviced regularly by a qualified technician. Due to
the unknown service history, many used pianos are
unable to be supported by Yamaha Music Australia.
