Kollaboration SF 4 will take place on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the historic California Theatre in San Jose, CA. We will be showcasing the most talented and diverse API talent the Bay Area has to offer in a night of talent and empowerment through entertainment. Kollaboration is an annual talent showcase and movement produced by young Asian & Pacific Islander (API) professionals and students. Our movement promotes a strong API presence in entertainment and media and empowers generations of young API artists to pursue their dreams. In 2000, Paul “PK” Kim created a talent showcase for Korean Americans in Los Angeles to share their diverse abilities, and to also serve as a platform to elevate community issues. Over time, the show expanded to other major North American cities–Chicago, Atlanta, Toronto–and expanded to include all Asians and Pacific Islanders. In 2013, there are 14 North American cities that are part of the Kollaboration family, spanning from Honolulu to Houston to New York[1]. Each Kollaboration city functions through its volunteer staff members–young professionals and students who are passionate about the movement and being part of this strong, growing network. Our sponsors and donors play a critical role in the Kollaboration movement by providing resources for the production of our annual show and our special guests. For example, in 2011 we were able to host (then) Golden State Warrior Jeremy Lin as a special guest judge for our 2nd annual show at UC Berkeley’s beautiful Zellerbach Auditorium. The API community is rapidly emerging as an expressive and influential voice, which is reflected in the high-volume throughput of online content in the form of photos, videos, blogs and social media posts. The opportunities are limitless and this is indeed our time to shine. Your tax deductible donation will ensure your organization’s inclusion in our promotional materials both in print and online media for our annual show. The deadline to be included for our 2013 show is Friday, June 28, 2013. Thank you very much for your consideration. I sincerely hope you will support Kollaboration SF and join as a valuable part our movement. Empowerment Through Entertainment. Sincerely, Christine Minji Chang Executive Director, Kollaboration SF Executive Director since Kollaboration SF 2 (2011). [1]. Please refer to the Demographics section on pages 5-6 for more information. KOLLABORATION SF • S PONSORSHIP PACKET 2013 ABOUT KOLLABORATION 3 KOLLABORATION IS AN ANNUAL TALENT COMPETITION SHOWCASE AND MOVEMENT PRODUCED BY ASIAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER (API) PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS IN 14 MAJOR CITIES ACROSS N ORTH A MERICA TO PROMOTE A STRONG API PRESENCE AND SUPPORT IN ENTERTAINMENT AND MEDIA. Kollaboration was founded in 2000 by Executive Director Paul “PK” Kim. Under the guidance of Executive Producer Roy Choi, Kollaboration officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2006 and has emerged as the premier Asian and Pacific Islander talent showcase across the North American continent. Our mission and mantra is “Empowerment through Entertainment.” In addition to encouraging the diverse talents of Asian Pacific Islander youth, Kollaboration seeks to empower: 1. API youth by providing them with a creative outlet and leadership training that serves as an alternative to gang-activity and delinquency for those at-risk, Top: Kollaboration SF 2 winners, ANAK; Middle: Host Nicki Sun with competitors Team Loopkicks; Bottom: Run River North. 2. API families by offering a platform for communication that bridges the gap between 1st generation parents and latter generation youth, 3. The API community at large, by raising awareness for other critical community issues and NPOs APIs have historically been categorized into certain images in mainstream media. APIs can find it difficult to be hired outside “model minority” or “foreigner” roles or have limited support to pursue non-traditional career paths due to cultural expectations. Such longstanding barriers have resulted in a lack of APIs in mainstream entertainment industries. Thus, APIs are not only inaccurately portrayed but also disproportionately under-represented in mainstream media. Our API youth are left with few visible role models and a narrowed pool of aspirations. Through generous sponsorships, Kollaboration endeavors to bring about a paradigm shift of perceptions and to pave the way for future APIs to accomplish their goals and dreams in arts and entertainment. In alignment with our mission statement of “Empowerment Through Entertainment,” the ultimate goal for the Kollaboration movement is a future of innovative and creative artistry with all races and ethnicities.
