Hilo Hattie to open Mega Flagship Store at
Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center
New Two-Level Flagship Store to Feature
Culture and More
Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center will be the
new home of Hilo Hattie's 29,000 sq. ft.
Flagship Store when it relocates to Waikïkï in
the early summer of 2007. The two-level store,
occupying the first and second floors with
direct access from Kaläkaua Avenue, will further enhance the $84 million revitalization that
is taking place at the Center.
The new store will be located adjacent to The
Cheesecake Factory anchoring Building C and
will be 25 percent larger than its current store
on Nimitz Highway. The new Flagship will
have a strong emphasis on culture in its design
as well as a dynamic retail mix that will appeal
to both visitors and kama'äina. It will offer
Hawaii's largest selection of Hawaiian fashions, gifts, souvenirs, t-shirts, personal care
products, home furnishings and accessories,
and stunning island jewelry.
To landmark the new mega store, the storefront
façade design will be built upon a unique
Hawaiian sense of place featuring a signature
tower that will be the centerpiece of the storefront façade. The tower element and ground
floor area of the store will house three escala-
tors and an elevator for easy and
convenient
access to the
store from the
Kaläkaua
Avenue sidewalk
area.
Hilo Hattie's legendary and unique customer
services will continue, including free shell lei
greeting, complimentary refreshments, food
and coffee tasting, free hemming, craft and
fashion demonstrations, along with an in-store
mailing department.
The new Waikïkï store will treat all the senses
with live Hawaiian music, tropical artwork and
props, and the sweet scent of fragrant flowers
from candles and nourishing bath and body
products to sooth a stressful day. Hilo Hattie
will also be expanding its exclusive private line
of fashions for the entire family, including soft
and supple silks and cool and crisp cottons
and cotton blends.
New features will include activities throughout
the store, along with interactive and technical
innovations not seen in Hawai'i before. A full

As part of their new store makeovers,
Princesse Tam Tam Lingerie and Allure
Swimwear, long-cherished retailers in Royal
Hawaiian Shopping Center, are

The Miami-based designer, who
has dressed many hot celebrities

the United States.
The addition of the Couture line to both

Tribute to Princess Ruth Ke'elikolani
Revitalization Information
The revitalization of the Royal Hawaiian
Shopping Center is an $84 million investment and the first major renovation of the
center since it was built in 1979.
To facilitate construction and for the safety of center visitors, there are temporary
detours to stores and restaurants during
the revitalization. The center is endeavoring to make these temporary detours as
convenient as possible for shopping convenience. Signage is located throughout
the center to aid in navigating the
detours.
Princess Ruth Ke'elikölani was the honored ali'i, or
royalty, in Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center's
Monarchy Tribute this February. Held on February
9 to honor the Princess' birthday, the event commemorated the life and legacy of the Princess
who held fast to the traditions of the
Hawaiian people. Songs and dances
were performed by Hälau O Ka Hanu
Lehua to honor the Princess and her
legacy.
Princess Ruth's life was filled with
hardships and symbolized her dedication to and perpetuation of the
Hawaiian culture. She is considered
one of the most pivotal and influential
characters in Hawaii's history. Greatgranddaughter of Kamehameha I and cousin to
Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, Princess Ruth was
considered the richest woman in the kingdom.
Due to her extreme generosity she bestowed most
of her land to Pauahi. Because of this gift, Princess
Pauahi's dream of a place for Hawaiian keiki to
receive a quality education and sustain their culture became a reality. Her contribution of land
was the foundation for the creation of
Kamehameha Schools, and is considered Princess
Ruth's greatest accomplishment.
The Princess was born on February 9, 1826 to
Mataio Kekuanao'a and Kalani Pauahi who tragi-
cally died during childbirth. Kamehameha I's
favorite wife Ka'ahumanu then cared for her until
she passed away when Ruth was only six years
old. Sent to live with her father and stepmother,
Ruth remained with them until she was married
at the age of sixteen. Her husband died
shortly after they were married, and none
of their three children reached adulthood.
As a member of the Kamehameha
family, Ruth had the opportunity to
adopt the European lifestyle that was
slowly encompassing the island chain.
Although able to speak and write in
English, she continued to speak only
Hawaiian, the language of her ancestors
and strictly followed their cultural practices.
The tribute was the first for Princess Ruth in the
Center's ongoing Monarchy Series, a cultural program to share Hawaiian history and traditions with
visitors and kama'äina. The year-round program
commemorates the lives and contributions of
Hawai'i's greatest royal figures on their birthdates.
Center visitors are treated to these and other stories
at each of the monarchy tributes. It is an excellent
opportunity for anyone to learn about Hawaii's
rich past and build appreciation for contemporary
Hawaiian issues.
During this renovation period, the center
is honoring its patrons by offering many
specials and discounts to guests who visit
the center. Guests are encouraged to
check with the Information Desks for all
information on these gifts with purchase,
complimentary cultural lessons,
Hawaiian entertainment, and more, or
call the Information Desk at 922-2299,
the on-site Management Office at
922-0588, or on the web at
RoyalHawaiianShoppingCenter.com.
The center remains open daily from
10 a.m. to 10 p.m. throughout the revitalization project.

Key to the Center's revitalization is the incorporation of
'Ike Hawai'i, or all things Hawaiian. Construction temporarily eliminated the stage area between Buildings B
and C that once hosted the Monarchy Tributes and cultural performances. A new cultural room has been constructed on the second floor of Building C in room
C205 to accommodate these programs. The new room

also serves as a mini-museum to educate interested visitors about the ali'i, or royalty of Hawaiian history.
'Ukulele lessons, kahili making classes and lei making
are held daily in the new room. Kupuna share their
skills and culture with visitors as part of the Center
experience. Class schedules are found on
